Had an amazing experience getting certified here at Scuba Utah. It was so straight forward and fast to get done (we did the one week course). Our instructor Jonathan is just the best. He was so kind and patient with us all even when we kept forgetting to lay our tanks down before walking away (sorry Jon). He is also very very passionate about the wagon wheel up at the crater which I found inspiring. He got us done as efficiently as possible with a full class and lots of skills to get through and kept it fun. This place is also ran and owned by women which is a slay. read more

I was needing to get scuba certified within two weeks of my vacation. SCUBA Utah was awesome! A good experience from the beginning till the end. Scuba Utah specializes in scuba, diving, and snorkeling equipment and also teaches class for scuba certification. I went to Scuba Utah last week to pickup some snorkeling gear. We are going on a Caribbean cruise later this month and I wanted to buy gear instead of rent it. The girl on staff greeted my promptly upon entering the store and did a great job asking questions about what I was looking for and recommended some great products. She helped me find the right size fins for my feet and spent time making sure I had exactly what I needed. Although I ended up spending more money then I had planned on I think the advice I received from the Scuba Utah employee I worked with was worth it. Certainly I could have purchased something online for less money but I don't think I would have received as good a product. The employee who helped me seemed very knowledgable and was friendly too. I'm sorry Carrie thought they were hard to work with and rude, but that wasn't my experience at all. I wouldn't hesitate to shop here in the future. Scuba Utah has been around since 1971 and is now being run by Rachelle who is the daughter of the original owner. Rachelle, her husband Rob and the rest of her staff are outstanding and are very knowledgeable instructors. They are usually fully booked for their scuba certification classes and with good reason. The wait is worth it in my opinion and the price of certification is very reasonable. My particular class was two nights a week from 6 PM to 10 PM and the final open water dive took place on Saturday and Sunday of the second week for roughly 3 hours per day. They provide all the gear during the pool sessions but you need to have your own mask, snorkel and fins for the open water dives, alternatively they will rent you the equipment you need for a very reasonable rate. They also provide a 10% discount to current students on purchases which helps a bit when getting some of the essentials. If you sign up for their Open Water Diver class, you will be given a PADI certification kit that has a DVD that contains the Open Water Diver book with chapters 1 through 5 in addition to some other relevant course material. Read chapters 1-5 and the Recreational Dive Planner booklet before your classes begin. Plan on each chapter taking roughly 2 hours with the quick quiz's, videos and end of chapter practice exams. Be sure you have completed all 5 chapters before your first day of class since the classroom instruction portion moves very quickly. (They presume you have done the book reading in advance and the class is mainly a review of the material so they can focus on the actual diving portion of the instruction. You will be behind if you do not!) The pool instruction is a lot of fun and Rachelle and her instructors are great at making you feel very comfortable in the water from the start. After the first night it felt very natural to breathe underwater with all the gear on. They also pay very close attention to the students that need a little extra help. The team there are very concerned that you leave the class with safety being at the forefront of every dive and teach solid safety practices from the very beginning. At no point do you ever feel unsupervised or left on your own. They are all there because they love diving and they love sharing it with us newbies and have been lucky enough to make a living doing what they love. The final 4 open water dives (2 per day) are done at the Homestead Crater in Midway, UT rather than most other scuba shops who dive their finals in Seabase west of Tooele. Homestead has better visibility, is mostly enclosed and undoubtedly warmer in the winter. Rachelle and her staff are also very helpful in assisting you in picking out appropriate gear if you require it and she was able to help me avoid rushing into some gear I would have otherwise purchased and had to replace later because it didn't suit me well. I cannot recommend this business highly enough and plan on returning for further PADI certification classes. The other reviewer that stated they were "rude and hard to work with", I cannot fathom how you came to that conclusion as everyone in our class had a great time and enjoyed the class very much. To be honest, we were all a bit sad when it was over. If all you are looking for is to save a dollar or two you can probably find somebody willing to certify you for a few dollars less, but being taught how to breathe air from a tank underwater is not one area I would skimp on if I were you. Yes, save $1.50 when you buy a box of cereal, but in a sport that if done incorrectly can have life or death consequences, competency and professionalism should rank at the top and this business has it in spades. read more

I was certified by Scuba Utah twenty years ago and had a great experience. I have scuba dived off and on again during that time period. The past couple years I have been diving a little more. My oldest daughter is now old enough to be certified as a Junior Open Water Diver. She has been fascinated by the ocean for a few years and has taken up snorkeling and SNUBA on previous vacations. So we walked in to Scuba Utah to look into their certification training and process. The staff was extremely helpful, informative and friendly and answered all our questions. We signed up for a course for my daughter and since it had been twenty years since I had taken the course, I signed up as well. We took home the course materials, book and DVD and enjoyed the home study aspect in preparation for the formal classes. My youngest daughter even liked the DVD and started asking questions about scuba - she is a beginning snorkeler right now. (Future Scuba Diver in a few years) Scuba Utah has a comfortable classroom setting conducive to learning. The classes were scheduled on the weekend so it worked well for both my work schedule and my daughter's school schedule. Vic, our diving instructor, was great and taught the material in a greater detail. With my daughter being 10 years old, I was a little concerned that it might be a tough setting for her, but Vic was great in working with her in the classroom as well as in the water. Scuba Utah has a great feature with an indoor pool connected to the classroom. So we learned in the classroom and then practiced in the water. It was great to be able to learn the material in a formal setting and immediately thereafter apply it in a hands-on way in the water. We had an opportunity to practice and dive with Vic, Chris and Rachelle. They were all great in general and went out of their way to ensure that my daughter understood everything, was comfortable and was able to accomplish everything on her own. She had a lot of fun too! From my perspective it was great to be able to relearn the fundamentals and practice some of the skills that I had forgotten or not used as often as I would have liked. There were two days in the classroom with pool work on one weekend. The following weekend we had our open water dives at The Crater in Midway. We picked up our gear the day before at the shop and the staff was helpful in preparing everything for us, making sure we had everything we needed and to answer any of our questions. Vic, Chris and Rachelle were once again great to work with in the water at The Crater and went out of their way to work with my daughter, who is in love with scuba diving now. We went over our dive books and dive logs after our dives and were able to pick up some gear to buy at the shop afterwards (as they have a nice selection of scuba gear and accessories as well). Having just received our diver certification cards in the mail, we are excited about the opportunity to put it to use in the Spring. An added bonus to taking the certification course is the opportunity to practice in the Scuba Utah pool before our trip as a refresher. Overall, it was a great experience start to finish. It is obvious that Scuba Utah has great ownership and people who are passionate about what they do and are training multiple generations of divers. I look forward to taking additional training courses from Scuba Utah as my daughters get older and to advance my own knowledge and training. I finally have my dive buddy as well! My husband and I went to CD Scuba to get our open water diver certifications. We had SO much fun during our time there. The instructor was extremely knowledgeable and clearly has a passion for what he does. He was the perfect balance of fun and serious teaching! We appreciated both ends of this as, of course, this is something really fun to do but at the same time we wanted to make sure we are safe for ourselves and others. Marc was able to give us the confidence we needed to have an absolutely terrific time. The facility where we began had a pool where we started- everything was in fantastic condition and was very clean. From there, we went to dive in a crater which was really, really cool. We both feel prepared and can't wait to go on our first scuba trip My only advice would be to make sure you do the homework that is asked of you prior to arrival(it's a work book and DVD)- there's a lot of information that is extremely important to know. An experienced friend who has been certified for several decades and has been diving all over the world told me that one's IQ declines by 20 points once he or she goes under the water. How true! We loved our open water diver training! Everyone we worked with was great and wanted to be sure we were all safe (most important) and having the best experience possible. The pool was warm; they covered everything and had you practice until you did it right (giving correction where needed); all equipment worked (they replaced my regulator when it made a gurgling sound); and you could tell they all loved diving and did this to help others have the same fun experience. It has to be hard working with a bunch of novices but they handled us all professionally. We will use them again and give them a high recommend. read more

My friend and I travelled to Utah from Denver recently, to complete our open water SCUBA certifications. We were both nervous, as the confined-water instruction we received in Denver was not very thorough. I told Rachelle (the shop owner) this from the start, and she went above and beyond to ensure that the experience was a positive one. Throughout the two days of diving, I had a couple "moments"...I got a little overwhelmed and scared. The diving instructors were all so very kind and patient, and always made me feel safe and supported. Rachelle pulled my friend and I away from the group and essentially gave us private 1-on-1 instruction for the rest of the time, in order to ease my worry. I have feared the open water my entire adult life, and getting this SCUBA cert was a huge deal for me. My friends made the appointment for a Discover Scuba class with a groupon about 3 weeks in advance so I am not sure how difficult that process was. However, my review is about the class itself. There were 6 students in my class, including 4 in my party and about 6 instructors. For the first half hour, we watched a dated video about the safety hazards of scuba diving. The video also described what we would be doing in our class. The swimming pool was a similar size to a hotel pool. The shallow end was 5 feet deep and the deep end about 10 feet. The facility seemed clean and well kept. The school provided goggles, flippers and a special vest which contained the gas tanks/regulators. Equipment was in good condition. The teachers showed us very basic scuba techniques--how to breathe using the gas tank, equalize our pressure when diving to deeper waters and remove water trapped inside our goggles. The class was 90 minutes long in total and the final 20 minutes involved playing around in the deep end of pool with our scuba gear on. It was a great time and I would recommend it as a good introduction to scuba. read more

We went to this shop to get scuba diving masks. My face is wider and flatter than average even among my own race (Asian). Scuba Utah carried a mask that fit well to my face. Their salesperson was extremely helpful - taught me how to choose and wear my mask (Who'd think one would need to be taught to wear a mask? But making sure the mask covers all my eyebrows is crucial!), predicted where it would leak a little, talked about remedy for that, taught me how to clean a brand new mask...
