Sea Ranch Resort has breathtaking room views of the beach and windswept bluffs overlooking the Pacific ocean waves. They are a smaller resort with ~14 rooms, but they do have interior and exterior event spaces for small weddings or corporate events. In the four or five times I've visited Sea Ranch, I've always stayed as a guest of my brother and his partner (and possibly once as a guest of my parents), so I've never paid for the things I'm about to criticize. I write that upfront as a caveat emptor/grain-of-salt cliche disclaimer. In short, I'm totally looking four or five different gift horses in the mouth. But honesty is the best policy trumps obsequiousness in my book, at least when it comes to writing reviews, and I know my brother would understand, so on with the review. It's so disappointing, but that's probably because I didn't come here until I was an adult. If I had started coming as a child, it would still be as magical as Carmel is to me, even though I now know better. The nature is gorgeous and lush and also sparse and unforgiving. Way fewer large trees grow here than you would expect, but maybe they also merciless cut them down to prevent people's views from being blocked? I don't know. It's just not as green as I expect it to be, but I'm a native Californian, so I love my browns and yellows as well as my greens when it comes to grasses and ground cover more generally, and the coveys of quails that often bathe in the ruts left by car tires delight me every time I see them. Our state birds are so flirtatiously frivolous. It's a wonder they survive at all. The architecture of most of the houses really appeals to me, despite how annoying some of the architectural failures (mostly small) are. The difference between architecture and art is that taking too many risks in architecture can actually kill people, and thankfully, the worst excesses of bad architecture here have to do with poor material choices, so premature rotting, excessive leaking, etc. You know, stuff that architects designing buildings along an unforgiving shoreline are supposed to take into account? Yes, that stuff. I love how far apart the houses are from one another, and that there seems to be no rhyme or reason so their relative siting. The entire area just feels like something out of a 1,200-page romance novel set in medieval times or the setting for an RGP video game that I would play too much of as an early teenager or like the entirety of England seemed to me for most of my semi-voracious-reader childhood. It's darkish and spooky and foggy--but not as foggy as you think--and flat. It's really flat. And it's really big. Getting here from San Francisco is a real chore. I've driven to and from by myself at almost all times of the day except the middle of the night. If you're doing that, make sure you're very well rested, and don't speed. Those curves are just killer. Make sure you bring a lot of books. The last time I was here, I believe there was wifi, but I didn't use it, because this is the kind of place you come to escape the real world. Why would you want to bring the Internet along with you? The northern part feels far homier than the southern part. I don't know why. It might be less crowded. Or maybe it's the pool. But there might be another pool that I've never been to. Oh, and the architecture style is its own kind of thing in my mind. So when I see something that looks like it's trying to be a cheap knockoff of Sea Ranch's worn woodsiness, I call it a "Sea Ranch ____." So, for example, I refer to this Starbucks near my parents' house (https://www.yelp.com/biz/starbucks-coffee-whittier-6) as Sea Ranch Starbucks. I don't think I'd ever fork over the cash to stay here by myself or to host others, but I definitely do enjoy being here when I'm invited, even though the trip to and from here are the parts of Sea Ranch I most dread. read more

Planned Beach-Utopian community; they hired architects, landscape designers, civil engineers, and graphic designers and it set a precedence for an oft-copied style that you'll still see today. American architects Charles Moore, Joseph Esherick, William Turnbull Jr., and Donlyn Lyndon designed the very first houses which created the distinct look that was inspired by coastal ranch sheds and structures. They kept the traditional roofline silhouette but dropped the eaves to create something new yet familiar and their redwood cladding blends into nature beautifully. It's minimal and modern but appropriate and fitting for the environment its in. You can see Charles Moore original "Condominium One" on the south end of Sea Ranch. Nowadays most of the homes are rentals or second homes, the community never happened but you do get peace and quiet with not a lot of people around. We rented a weekend home from Grand Welcome and had to drive 8 minutes north to pick up our keys at Gualala. The Kabella house was easy access to everything, we drove no longer than 10 minutes everywhere we went. Our favorite part was the glass-panel wood burning stove and the outdoor Jacuzzi that lets you enjoy the stars on clear nights. read more

Beware! My mother was placed on life support 12 days before my reservation. I kindly asked for a full refund 11 days in advance, which was a booking over July 4 weekend. The host and Vacasa were completely insensitive and denied my request. They stated, very coldly that they are sticking to the policy and only refunding 50%. $1000 that they are going to keep! Since this reservation is over July 4 weekend they will likely still be able to book the residence and they'll keep my $1000. Profiting from my family's misfortune. Even if they can't rebook it, they should have a little heart. Absolute disgrace. They should be ashamed of themselves. The Sea Ranch community should fire them. read more

I will NEVER rent a property from this place again! We reserved our New Years Eve house last Jan so we could make sure to get a good house near the ocean as places fill up quickly. I just got our check in instructions and found out that we are required to drive an EXTRA TWO HOURS to their offices to pick up the key. So we pass the rental house and keep driving for an hour to get the key then turn around and drive another hour back to the house. AN EXTRA TWO HOURS!?!?! Really? So there is no way for someone to meet us, I asked.."no sorry". So you are unable to put a lock box on the door? "No sorry". I was told "this is one of the properties we manage that we can't do any of those things for you". Well don't you think we should have been notified prior to one week before vacation that our 3.5 hour road trip was not going to be a 5.5 hour road trip? Don't you think that is worth mentioning? So we paid almost $3,000.00 to be inconvenienced by having to drive an extra 2 hours in order to check in to our vacation home. NOTHING was said in the original rental agreement about this. NOTHING was said about this during any other communication we have had with them throughout the year. We will NEVER NEVER NEVER rent from this place again. read more

I love this place. It's soooo relaxing. I usually head up for two or three nights but would like to find time for a week. Depending on your personality type and getaway goals, The Sea Ranch may or may not be your thing, but if you're looking to simplify and/or veg out for a few days, this is the place. The deal: The Sea Ranch is a large private development with vacation homes dotting the coast. Renting one of these homes can be done through various agencies based in Gualala, a nearby town where you'll likely end up buying groceries and basics. A rental gets you a parking pass and use of various recreational facilities: pool, tennis courts, golf course. With a smirk and chuckle: yes, it's all very WASPy -- pastel sweaters are optional but if adorned, should be draped over the shoulders and accessorized with Ray-Bans and a BMW convertible. Many homes accept pets, but this may limit availability. There is something slightly voyeuristic in staying at somebody else's vacation home for a few days. You peruse the bookshelves, browse the available board games, review the DVDs on hand. I like to pretend that I'm temporarily adopting somebody else's carefully curated lifestyle. Though wifi and cable are available in almost all homes, sometimes it's nice to not have the world at your fingertips and be forced to deal with what's in front of you -- simplify, right? To conclude: this is one of my favorite places in Northern California. I like to think of it as a self-serve spa experience: beautiful surroundings, fresh ocean air, every home I've ever stayed had a hot tub. I suppose you will have to BYOM (Bring Your Own Masseuse or Mud bath) -- an exercise I shall leave to the reader. read more

I stayed in this community for only a day, but the home I stayed at was very comfortable and well-appointed, and only about a quarter mile from a trail right alongside the edge of the beautifully jagged bluffs. I saw deer and wild turkey and harbor seals. The wind whipped my hair around and gave me rosy cheeks and calmed my soul. I wished I could've stayed longer, but I have a feeling I'll be back... Wow - I sure have gotten some feedback about my original review - most were kind and funny ("Hey - we live here and we're not lazy" and "It's not a trailer park, trailers have wheels") only one guy was rude. So - taking into account all the SeaRanch cheerleaders online and several friends who tell me I'm way off base, I'll split the difference as my experience has changed - perhaps I just talked to the wrong guy on a bad day - or maybe I was having a bad day. This place is so quite and peacefull! My aunt ex-husband own a house there but its no manion but the rental is hairy in price! Its a LONG drive to get to there from SF CA or the South or East Bay! Worth going!!! Please NOTE in some rentals cabin they are LIMITED in parking and SOME units do allow pets HOWEVER you need to really do search in these rentals! My unlce has a cabin BUT will NOT allows pets or small children! Your near grocier store is a 1.5 hours drive so DO BRING your grociers with you! WARNING: Sea Ranch is BEAUTFULL but there is heavy rains and VERY thick fog during Late fall up to late spring! DO USE FOG LIGHTS! Difficult to book online. And the website is mistaken in parts - some screens say no availability, on others the rooms are there -for the same dates. But I eventually succeeded online in making a placeholder reservation for about 6 weeks hence. When I called to add another room, the receptionist was surreally unhelpful. So I canceled the entire booking (made an hour earlier) and got hit with a $15 cancellation fee. (Only evident after you get the booking confirmation). Very surprised and disappointed. Sea Ranch is a great place to go to forget about the everyday rat race life that we live... I recommend Shell Beach for sure! I could spend HOURS sitting, digging for the most awesome shells, but you must dig deep for the tiny treasures! The seals are adorable! All the beaches are CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! LOVE THIS PLACE! I have been there when I was 17 - 20 but now that I'm in my late twenties I can really see the beauty of this place, I almost can't believe that I missed the big picture when I was younger! The Sea Ranch is a great place for a long weekend. I don't know if I would come up for a regular length weekend, because I'm always kind of sick after the drive up along hwy1. By the time I feel better, A whole day has gone by. I have only come up here with a large group of friends, so we are a little limited in the houses we can rent with 12+ people. The Wits End, and The Compound (our name for it since it has three little houses as one, I can never remember what the real name is). There are miles of walking paths, and when you hit the beaches at low tide, you may just find some awesome tidepools. Tons of wildlife roam the area, and there is NOTHING around for miles ensuring a relaxed weekend, but it also mean you should come prepared. The town of Gualala (pronounced Wa-la-la according to some other who may know what they are talking about) had two grocery stores that meet basic needs, but don't go looking for truffle oil there. read more

If you are afraid of heights (as I am) get someone else to drive and hide your head under a pillow. You will see hundreds of brown pelicans, wild turkeys, countless deer, a fox or two and a wide variety of birds and other critters. Get back to nature - regain your sanity, if for only a short time. By the way, Rams Head Realty within the Sea Ranch property, is far and away the best place to rent a Sea Ranch house. All you need to bring are sheets and towels - everything else is provided and this realty company is wonderful. I've used them for years and never had a complaint. My wife introduced me to the Sea Ranch experience. We really enjoy being able to stay at a beach home without all the ticky-tacky that American beach towns usually have. The water is clean, the beaches are clean and Ive never encountered a loud stereo or any disruptive noise. I do realize that Sea Ranch is also a metaphor for America in the 2000's. The successful 1%ers own the very expensive homes at Sea Ranch and 99%ers like myself get to rent them for 200+ bucks a night. :) That being said we will visit SR again, its really quite a unique and quiet place. read more

Have been renting Sea Ranch vacation homes for many years, utilizing several different agencies. There are plenty of good things about SR such as the trails, beaches, ocean, dark skies, wildlife, quiet, and views, which is why we keep going back, but there can be negatives, too. I've encountered a few. Such as: a) Many homes are getting on in years, and not always well-maintained, even when the rental fee is fairly high. Systems and appliances are sometimes inoperable, or don't work well, or are outdated, or too old to clean properly. Old and cheap mattresses, old carpeting, old furniture is common, as are blinds that don't work, funky old stoves, chipped and cracked porcelain, running toilets, windows that are rusted shut, hot tubs with broken pumps and controls, etc.; b) You may also encounter bad smells, for example: mildew (SR is a damp place, homes stay closed up for long periods, and furniture, carpets and bed covers are sometimes ancient); and old cooking smells and pet smells can permeate the entire house - all that wood paneling is very absorbent. You will bring some of these odors and mold spores home with you even if you wash every item of your clothing and linen before departure; c) Always test every system (cable TV, internet, hot tub, furnace, water, stove, lights, etc.) immediately upon arrival, because you may discover something does not work, and you'll want to call the rental agency right away to report it, as it may take days to get repairs; d) Gasoline and food is much more expensive in Gualala than non-tourist areas; e) The owners of the home may have stocked the place with furniture, utensils, art, books, DVDs, etc., but they may be more akin to stuff gleaned from a thrift store than something nice, and the owners may have tastes that don't match your own. If you rent a home that has one or more of the above negatives, you may well wonder, as I have on several occasions, if the owners and rental agency don't care about their customers....only caring that their money is green. About the only way to decrease the likelihood of these negatives in advance, is to pick a home that is newer and with a higher cost. Don't rent one at a bargain or cheap rate or if it is more than about 15 years old: chances are the place is a more or less a dump, no matter how glowingly it is described in the rental listing. Read between the lines; the listings may be more significant for what they don't say rather than what they do say. I wish the rental agencies were as stringent toward the owners they represent as they are toward the customers - maybe the homes would be better maintained. read more

The Sea Ranch IS heaven on Earth. My parents owned a home here up until 2001. It was built in 1991 and was in close proximity to Shell Beach (a 2-minute walk). We took full advantage of 5-6 visits a year "on the house", so to speak. They never rented the place, so it was family use only, and boy, did we take advantage. The security is awesome (you must have a car tag and ID) and the scenery is spectacular. We've been back a number of times since the house was sold (rented), but TSR remains the same....heaven on Earth. read more

Our favorite vacation spot for our family (Well, I guess Maui is a close 2nd, but this is more off the grid) We go twice a year and each time we discover something new. Both sides of The 1 have their positives. Stangel, Pebble and Shell are our favorite beaches to visit. We have golfed (don't go on a windy day), sunset on the bluff trails near Harbor Seal Cove is amazing. Hiking, running and road/mountain biking are the best in CA (especially if you like to climb and don't like flats) What I love is that not many know about these trails and there are so many that are not marked that we discover new ones each time. I would put my favorite trails, but don't want to ruin your exploration of finding them on your own. read more

I stayed in one of the houses at Sea Ranch for a week this past fall (2011), and was overall impressed. I have been coming up to Gualala for about 20 years with my family, but this was my first and only experience with Sea Ranch. The house we stayed at was great. Very modern inside, with vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, new appliances, and a great view. I do think the management team needs to do a better job making sure the pictures of rental houses are current, and flattering. The house we stayed at (which I can't remember the name...I think it was Ocean Breeze) was by far, way better in person. So I am sure there may be other houses that are not given their due credit. Oh, one more thing. Our last day there, we spent the whole day cleaning the house. Sweeping and mopping, vacuuming and scrubbing everything, just to make sure we left the place better than how we found it. Despite this, however, management decided to still charge us a cleaning fee (that was later refunded after asking why and exactly what they were charging us for). There was never an explanation as to why, so out assumption was that is was a clerical error. Despite receiving the house with a dishwasher full of dirty dishes, we left the place immaculate, and were still initially charged a fee. So, I think the owners who rent out their homes should keep a watchful eye of whomever is responsible for managing the rental contracts, and the cleaning crews. read more

Caution - do not be deceived by Rams Head Realty's website. The home photos and descriptions are misleading. We just rented the Kirkwood home. The website led us to believe it fit our needs. We arrived to a home with: bunk beds so old, hard and uncomfortable the kids barely slept; old unusable frying pans with nonstick coating flaking off; inadequate, old and worn kitchen tools and utensils; an old oven that didn't work; an old stove top that heated so slowly it took forever to make pancakes; old worn window seat cushions so thin and uncomfortable you could feel the wood frame below; and a TV placed were no one could view it. When we called Rams Head to point out the problems, they did NOTHING to address our concerns. Their response - too bad, you're stuck with what you rented. We have rented a number of homes at Sea Ranch over the past 15 years. In the past when there were problems with the home we rented, Rams Head took care of it, even putting us in another home on one occasion. They are now obviously under different management that does not care about the customer or repeat business. For the price you are paying, you should get a property in much better condition and a responsive, customer-friendly rental staff. We did not get any of those things. Sea Ranch is a beautiful place. The Kirkwood home is in serious need of replacing old, worn out items. Rams Head Realty's website is misleading, inaccurate and incomplete. Rams Head Realty staff, Barry & Debbie, were absolutely no help, useless. read more

Weekends at Sea Ranch have been a family tradition for a while -- and there is nothing that replaces the amazing 'get away from it all' feeling that you have there. Take time to learn about the architecture and the way that the houses were designed to blend in with their surroundings (you really notice this in the newer homes vs the traditional ones as you're walking around Sea Ranch). We've stayed in a few of the Eshricks homes (the famous architect who designed much of Sea Ranch) and they really teach you an appreciation for great architecture. BEWARE! There are a other home rental agencies at The Sea Ranch and they won't rip you off as much as Rams Head. I have been renting homes for the past 24 years and we absolutely love The Sea Ranch. It is our go-to vacation when the every day grind gets to us. BUT, the last time I was perusing the available homes I picked one that was managed by Rams Head which we have not rented from before. The home was perfect for the size of our group and was available on the dates we needed. I noticed it was a bit more expensive than what we usually pay through another agency for a comparable home. We do like to splurge when we go and have definitely rented some magnificent homes. So I figured, this one would be worth the extra cost. When I received the confirmation phone call from Rams Head, the person quite hesitantly mentioned that linens (sheets and towels) were not included and that we would have to bring our own! Well I don't happen to have sheets in my home that are the same size as those in the rental home! I would have to go out and purchase 3 sets of sheets that I would never use at home! Plus we would have to bundle all of this (for 6 people) and lug it back and forth taking up a lot of space in our car. This was ridiculous in my mind especially for what they were charging for the rental fee (450.00/night). In many of the other homes (especially the more high-end) that we have rented through another agency (Sea Ranch Escape), there have always been linens included in the price (very nice ones as well with bathrobes!). Needless to say, I cancelled my reservation. I provided this feedback to the appropriate person at Rams Head and received a very unhelpful and quite derogatory email back. Certainly won't be utilizing their services in the future! So my advice is to shop around (stay away from Rams Head) and make sure you get what you deserve in a home rental at The Sea Ranch. I agree with Trude H's post that Ramshead are not the most friendly. We recently rented the Park House - location was good, house was spacious but felt dated and grimy, television did not work, no wifi (though no "dual band" is advertised) - rainy weather prevented us from being outside so the option of television and wifi would've helped to ward off cabin fever. Had to bring our own wood for fireplace and sheets and towels. We love the Sea Ranch - you just never know what you're getting when you rent the houses. read more

I was ready to forgive the Lodge for having to climb two flights of stairs to get to the Premium King room I had booked for my husband and I this weekend (because the photo on their website looked heavenly to me). Regarding the stairs, I have a lot of weakness in my left leg and can only climb each step by putting my right foot down then my left next to it, then climbing to the next step. Plus I have residual breathing issues from a one-year-long lung problem. When I got to the room I was very disappointed. The wrap-around window seat was nowhere to be seen (nor the pillows on the now-invisible window seat) and our windows were so dirty we could hardly see out of them. Then we decided to stay on the property to have dinner. Years ago we had had dinner in the Lodge restaurant and it was so lovely and the food so terrific that that is why we decided to one day stay at the Lodge. Back then the restaurant had linen tablecloths and napkins; it was a lovely "dress-up place." So we got to the restaurant for dinner. Gone was the ambience---no white linen tablecloths and napkins, just cheap looking light wood tables and matching little chairs. I was prepared to forgive them for their sad re-model, when I opened the menu and found it quite limited. I wound up ordering a steak. It was cooked perfectly but served with a mountain of French fries and no vegetables. Our lovely blonde waitress, however, made some outstanding wine selections for us. My husband had the Mahi-Mahi special, but oddly the lovely fish was completed buried under kale. I have given up on Sea Ranch. read more

We stayed at Sea Ranch many times as my son was growing up, such as it is. We'd share a place with my wife's Mom and Dad and stay for a week. It's mostly bluffs, with beach access via a tall stairway. Windy and chilly on the beach, only the kid went more than ankle deep in that water, and sometimes you can't sit in your chair and read because you feel like you're getting sand blasted. Still, a great concept, with comfortable rental homes, a couple of decent restaurants, ocean views, and trails to follow through the coastal biome. It's a tough drive to get there, and you'll want to be medicated if you get car sick regardless of the direction of approach. Very relaxing getaway if you bring a good book or three or can make a bridge foursome. read more

I took a weekend trip here with my wife and we had a great time. The rooms were updated and clean and the dinning room was awesome (as was the food). We already want to go back. There is no active nightlife besides a low key bar but that is not what you come here for. Don't skip the free breakfast it is amazing. read more
