Filthy, poorly managed, toxic culture, marginal equipment, overly crowded. Not all the coaches are bad, but some may harass you.

After the class, Coach Alex took a lot of time to explain different CrossFit principles and practices to me.

Wow, I should've read the reviews. I have been traveling and dropping into box after box all over…read morethe country having great experiences meeting lots of great people that enjoy the sport. However, today was not that I register before as instructed online and showed up for my class 45 minutes early to do assessments that the box might need. I was met by a less than friendly coach who asked me what I was doing there. I explained that I was there for a drop in, it didn't seem to click. Coach rudely said you're 45 minutes early, which I didn't respond. I was asked to sit down and wait in which I did. The coach then came over to me and explained you need to fill out this online and get preapproved, I responded, I did at that point the coach told me this probably wouldn't be a good fit, and I asked why not assuming it was something referring to my age (I'm a masters athlete) and ability, and she responded I don't like your attitude. I have Cross fitted for over 10 years all over the country and never never had this experience. Don't waste your time here. They're plenty other great choices in Santa Cruz, like CrossFit Santa Cruz Central

I'd been pushing weights around at a bodybuilding gym for thirty years, and had grown extremely…read morebored with the routine. I was thinking about hiring a trainer at the gym to get me moving, and a friend recommended I check out CrossFit Santa Cruz instead. That felt like a big change, and I was mildly skeptical about CrossFit, but I thought sure, I'll try it out for a few months. My skepticism was quickly eroded by the three introductory/orientation sessions with Laurie. Going over all the basics with personal attention helped me to learn a lot about how I was moving and how I could move better. I appreciated Laurie's rigorous attention to proper movement, given that improper movement can lead to injury. Even those sessions felt challenging and culminated in a short but intense and gratifying workout. I approached my first actual classes with trepidation, being a middle-aged "new kid" who doesn't know what he's doing. I worried that I'd just be fumbling and bumbling and an annoyance to the coast at best. My fears (which I now realize had something to do with high school phys-ed) were unfounded. The other CrossFitters were friendly, and Coach Hollis kept a close eye on me, with pointers and instruction. I was moving better at the end of the class than when I started...and this has been true of every day since. I'm making so much progress here, it's profoundly encouraging. Now I'm a regular, well-outlasting my initial "three-month test-run." I've gradually gotten to know the great people working out there, tho Covid protocols (which are strictly followed at this gym) like social distancing and masking have made it a little harder to get to know people, for now anyway. I've also worked with most of the coaches---Laurie, Hollis, Leah, and Brian---and have come to truly appreciate their extensive training/certification, and more to the point, their high standards for safety and good movement. They help modify my workout to meet me where I'm at, keep a close eye on my form, and give me just the right amount of push to grow. One final word about the culture of CrossFit Santa Cruz. Many gyms (of all types) can be oversaturated with broey testosterone and hypercompetitiveness. CF Santa Cruz is not like that; It lives up to its reputation as a diverse community that celebrates achievement while seeing that it takes different forms for different people. That culture is clearly valued and sustained by the coaches and community.

The coaches take the time to make sure all of the movements are being done correctly before moving on, and embrace modifications; making sure that anyone would be able to join for a class regardless of CrossFit experience. If you want a family experience in a gym while getting in the best shape of your life, this gym is for you. I could not recommend this gym enough... go, you will be so happy you did!!!

She gave me a tour etc. The class was great. We warmed up together and everything was discussed as a group before we grabbed our weights. It's a small gym but they made the docs work for the four of us. The coach was happy to scale the activities as needed. He seemed very knowledgeable. He cheered us all on by our names during the workout. Inspirational. At the end, no one was in a hurry to get out. They gave me recommendations on where to eat and where to go etc. that was really nice! I'd recommend anyone to drop in here. What a friendly and welcoming community of people. The gym itself is not just CrossFit. There'sthe Krav Maga classes as well. Did not meet Greg, but he had been traveling that weekend for a fight with a guy he trains. Clean bathrooms. T shirts available for purchase. And a donut shop in the same parking lot LOL. Check this place out! Drop in fee $25.

Kelvin is one of the best CrossFit coaches available. He focuses on form, body position, proper movement, and not just on heavy weights. He readily adapts the work out to your level. I have always considered myself athletic having played 8 different organized sports throughout high school and my childhood but had always got my exercise and stayed fit through sports. Now at age 28 without regular sports practices, I have really been wanting some sort of way (beyond yoga which is not enough) to really strengthen and get/stay fit. But I have never liked going to gyms and it is so much harder to motivate on your own. Aside from when my high school PE class did a weight/gym class rotation for a few weeks junior year I hadn't spent hardly any time at a gym or box before so it was very new for me. I didn't know what a kettle bell was! Group CrossFit classes were the perfect solution and Kelvin was the perfect Coach to introduce me to this type of training that was completely new to me. The intro courses really set the stage so that you understand the roots and philosophy of CrossFit and the importance of learning the basic movements and lifts properly BEFORE adding weight to be sure you are doing the movement safely and correctly with maximum efficiency. The workouts are different every time so it never gets old/routine/boring and with a group there to encourage you, you work harder and WANT to go. So much better then working out alone. Kelvin always introduces the movements of the day by reminding us of all the key points of performance for that movement to be sure we are ready to perform it safely and efficiently, protecting our muscles and joints and getting the most benefit out of the movement. Even if it is just a push-up which we have all done thousands of Kelvin will remind us the importance of doing it right and review the key points of doing a proper push up. That's a responsible Coach! Surfing is my main sport these days and I definitely notice more power in my surfing. But the coolest part is how many more waves I can catch! I have so much more endurance now. After catching a long wave to the inside, I can turn right around and paddle straight back out through several waves holding my breathe etc. and I get much less winded then I used to. That gets me back out to catch another wave sooner, not needing rest time. So rad! Music can be a huge part of getting you through a tough workout and to top it off, Kelvin is practically a music Encyclopedia. He is always switching the genre and plays great music at every class... crucial.
