It's an excellent resource for new comers to the area, as well as, anyone looking for ideas for new places to eat or shop. I've found lots of information on the arts and entertainment in the area. There are places I keep saying I'm going to go there, like the Planetarium and this restaurant called Mariakakis that features cuisine from different parts of Eastern Europe; from Bulgarian to Hungarian and areas in between.

My little wanted to go to a museum, so when I found that Morrow Mountain State Park not only had a…read moremuseum but a scenic overlook, I knew we needed to visit. A very quick drive later, we were at the State Park and enjoying all that it had to offer. I appreciate that the roads within the State Park are paved, as the terrain can be steep at times and with the rains we've had, a gravel road would have washed out. The museum is small, but highly informative. I learned so many new things about Stanly County and the types of rocks and minerals found within the county. After the museum, we drove around the State Park, exploring the many camping sites, seeing the Kron house, and ending up at the scenic overlook. There was one hairpin turn that you have to be careful with when meeting oncoming vehicles, but it was a very serene drive. I thought it was awesome they had a "summit snack bar" that was open, although we didn't wander over. The views are breathtaking! Such a great place to visit on a weekend or during the week when time permits.

Highlights - Great place to walk, run, bike or walk your…read moredogs - Restaurants and places to get a drink are not far off the Strollway - Old Salem section is great - Runs from 4th Street to the Greenway The Downtown Strollway runs from Salem Avenue, past Old Salem and into downtown, ending (or beginning) on 4th Street. Great trail for walking, running, walking the dogs or riding a bike. The Old Salem section of the Strollway is a 5 star. The trail takes you right past Old Salem. You will pass right by the Old Salem Visitors Center and the Heritage Bridge. You can cross over the street using the bridge and visit Old Salem if you like. The trail in this section is wide enough for all people coming and going. If you follow the Strollway south you will end up at the Greenway, which you can take to Winston-Salem State or Salem Lake to the west, or Washington Park to the east, but that is another review. You do have to cross over a busy street (Salem Avenue) but there is a nice wine shop on the other side. The northern route past Old Salem takes you to downtown and ends at 4th Street. This takes you under Business 40 and past Corpening Plaza park. Nice part of this section is you end up right into the heart of all of the downtown restaurants on 4th Street. This section requires crossing 3 streets in downtown. The only reason I don't have the Strollway rated 5 stars is the section running under Business 40 can be a little sketchy. This will change after the Business 40 renovations are completed.

The center always has all the most current information about what is happening in the city and upcoming events. The also have several copies of the Charlotte Happenings magazine and another local magazine. I've seen some of the events they host outside their center and they really showcase the city in a great way. My favorite event was the Chef Alyssa's Kitchen demo they hosted. All of the employees inside the visitor center are super helpful and knowledgeable. The visitor center isn't very big but it packs a big punch. One of my favorite items it has is the candles from Doc Porters. They run out so you have to check in often to see if they have any. I recommend popping in anytime your downtown and need to know what's happening in the city!

The Visitor's Center is a great place to start. They offer maps for walking tours of the town and lots of local travel information. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and the lady in the visitor's center apologized that not everything was open on Sundays. She was quite helpful in suggesting a walking tour and pointing out where we could see various things like Floyd's Barber Shop. If you visit Mt Airy - make this your first stop.

I passed by two large porch swings as well as three or four large picnic tables under the front porch. The lobby houses lots of SC travel brochures, and typically there are a few employees available to answer questions. The restrooms were modern with nice tile floors and touchless soap dispensers and hand dryers. It was well maintained and clean. Just outside the restrooms, there were several soda and snack machines in case you want a snack. If you need a quick break, this is a great place to stop.
