There are places I keep saying I'm going to go there, like the Planetarium and this restaurant called Mariakakis that features cuisine from different parts of Eastern Europe; from Bulgarian to Hungarian and areas in between.

I know most folks think of crowders when thinking of nearby hiking spots near Charlotte, but go…read moreeast instead and you'll happen upon another park with trails and very easy to get to! We got about six and a half miles of hiking from the parking area to the view (3.25 miles). Had our picnic, then headed back. The last half a mile was pretty steep, but the views are worth it. Lots of picnic spots as well as a super clean bathroom at the top. If you don't want to hike to the top, you can get to the visit by car, so super family friendly (multi generational). We only did one trail route, but there are so many loops to keep it interesting. The trail we did was up and down too so a good variety of climbing and downhill.

Highlights - Great place to walk, run, bike or walk your…read moredogs - Restaurants and places to get a drink are not far off the Strollway - Old Salem section is great - Runs from 4th Street to the Greenway The Downtown Strollway runs from Salem Avenue, past Old Salem and into downtown, ending (or beginning) on 4th Street. Great trail for walking, running, walking the dogs or riding a bike. The Old Salem section of the Strollway is a 5 star. The trail takes you right past Old Salem. You will pass right by the Old Salem Visitors Center and the Heritage Bridge. You can cross over the street using the bridge and visit Old Salem if you like. The trail in this section is wide enough for all people coming and going. If you follow the Strollway south you will end up at the Greenway, which you can take to Winston-Salem State or Salem Lake to the west, or Washington Park to the east, but that is another review. You do have to cross over a busy street (Salem Avenue) but there is a nice wine shop on the other side. The northern route past Old Salem takes you to downtown and ends at 4th Street. This takes you under Business 40 and past Corpening Plaza park. Nice part of this section is you end up right into the heart of all of the downtown restaurants on 4th Street. This section requires crossing 3 streets in downtown. The only reason I don't have the Strollway rated 5 stars is the section running under Business 40 can be a little sketchy. This will change after the Business 40 renovations are completed.

The center always has all the most current information about what is happening in the city and upcoming events. The also have several copies of the Charlotte Happenings magazine and another local magazine. I've seen some of the events they host outside their center and they really showcase the city in a great way. My favorite event was the Chef Alyssa's Kitchen demo they hosted. All of the employees inside the visitor center are super helpful and knowledgeable. The visitor center isn't very big but it packs a big punch. One of my favorite items it has is the candles from Doc Porters. They run out so you have to check in often to see if they have any. I recommend popping in anytime your downtown and need to know what's happening in the city!

The Visitor's Center is a great place to start. They offer maps for walking tours of the town and lots of local travel information. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and the lady in the visitor's center apologized that not everything was open on Sundays. She was quite helpful in suggesting a walking tour and pointing out where we could see various things like Floyd's Barber Shop. If you visit Mt Airy - make this your first stop.
