It was not accidental-- they motored toward it. I was shocked. Even worse, their position was cornering the whale toward a cliff. Our boat (with Outer Island) stayed much further back and I was grateful for that. I know Mayas has a good rep, but I was upset by what I saw and tried to get a few pictures of.

My mind is still reeling from all that we saw. We followed a gathering of 19 orcas for more than an hour. Exceeded every bucket list dream I ever had, for seeing these animals! Simon is very, very knowledgeable; he also collects data for Canada Fisheries, so he knew the pods and individuals we were watching. And that wasn't all. We were guided to view a Humpback whale, 2 kinds of sea lion, seals, bald eagles, and even an island which had been stocked as an exotic game preserve, and still has wild animals from other parts of the world roaming around it. There were only 9 people, plus the skipper, so everybody had a great view of everything. And the boats are really fast, so they can go quite a distance in the search for those ever-moving orcas. An experience of a lifetime...even if (like me) you've taken many other whale-watching excursions.

We had an absolutely incredible experience on our half day whale watching tour with naturalist…read moreguides Michael and Janae! (Our crew, Richard and Taylor, were also great!) It was a chilly and slightly drizzly day, but we saw two pods of Orcas, and incredibly, one of them swam up to us and went right under our boat. Apparently a first for our crew. They made sure to give the whales good distance after that and I appreciated how much the safety and conservation of the whales and other wildlife are top of mind. We also saw a humpback whale and quite a few bald eagles. We have an adult child back in the States who is a park ranger, and I know how passionate she is about what she does and how much fun she has teaching people about the local ecology, and our two naturalists reminded me so much of her. They were having so much fun themselves and they enthusiastically answered all of the many questions we had for them. This was a once in a lifetime experience and we loved every minute!

The staff was friendly. They were very informative and very attentive. There was a marine biologist on board to answer questions and give out informative lectures on the Orca and other whales in the area. After cruising out of the bay on to the wide open ocean we saw Orcas! There were four of them and they were beautiful. After being there for awhile the captain steered us to a different location. We were lucky enough to see Humpback Whales! They got pretty close to the boat and they were just beautiful. I choose well.

We unfortunately saw no whales during our first outing (so many cute seals and eagles though!), but they were able to squeeze us in the next day for another chance at no additional cost.
