We have shopped at this locally owned Sears for many years. We have always had excellent service, very helpful ideas and suggestions, and we have been told about upcoming sales periods to save money and not buy now. We have purchased many washers and dryers, stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, freezers, small appliances, tools, trimmers, lawn mowers, microwaves over the years and, with two exceptions (a Bosch dishwasher and a Samsung refrigerator), we have been very happy with our purchases. What a lousy place to do business they sell broken appliances and don't stand by them not only was our dryer broken it was full of dirt and a new dent was in it that wasn't at time of purchase good thing they are closing as I would suck state agencies on them along with the better business bureau they supposedly have a couple other stores they also need to close the owner should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves. Don't buy here. We went against all our instincts and bought a used fridge to save money, and it was a terrible decision. They said the refrigerator was refurbished. To me that means clean and make sure everything is in working order. They did disclose that they don't warranty the ice maker. Well it's been 5 months and we discover the water connector is cracked and has been slowly leaking and ruined our floor. What was worse though is when we got it the bottom inside was packed with that clumpy dust that gathers under refrigerators (really packed ) plus packed with dog food and mouse poop some of which we can't even get out as we don't have the tools to get in that far. Again refurbished should mean at the very least that it has been thoroughly cleaned. I called to tell them about the dog food and mouse pop and dust and they acted contrite but really they just don't care. Not only will I never buy a used appliance again (hello landfill), but I will never step foot in a Sears store again. Not any Sears store! read more

Ordered a new stove that came with defective parts. Store not willing to make this right as we were doing installation ourselves. My dad had installed more than one stove in is 60 plus years to know what he is doing. And as an FYI, the store does not offer installation...and the defective part had nothing to do with installation and would need to be replaced regardless!! This is a "hometown" store, so it's not your typical big-box-style Sears that carries everything. They really only have appliances, tools, and lawn equipment. If today's visit is any indication of the chain's concept for this type of store, I really can't believe that they stay in business. The store was very clean and tidy. There were at least 2 other paying customers in the store, as well as what appeared to be a manager and sales person. We were searching for a part for a washing machine, and were unsure (1) whether the store carried parts, (2) if they had the particular part in stock, or (3) if the part could be ordered. We stayed in the store for approximately 5 minutes. We were well within eyesight of the "sales person." We were clearly in need of assistance. We clearly attempted to make eye contact. She was more interested in a personal conversation she was having with a gentleman in the store who clearly was not in the store to make any sort of purchase. Said manager was on the phone throughout the visit; based on snippets of conversation, I think it was business-related, perhaps weekly sales reporting. At one point, another phone line in the store rang. The sales person walked to the counter and picked up the phone (while continuing her oh-so-vital conversation with her friend. I can't say for sure that she actually hung up on the caller; but I can say that I know that she did not answer the call, nor was there a lull in her personal conversation. I noted another older man in the store trying to find something. He was quite plainly having difficulty reading some packaging. He, too, was quite thoroughly ignored. Needless to say, this location (at the very least!) will not be on the short-list or the long-list when we need to buy new appliances. read more

PLEASE SHARE: I Am Protesting The Sears In Berlin Vt. Here is a post I just put up as a response to the owners lies! Do Not Trust These People. If You Do, Please Know, You Were Warned! Twice "Out of Integrity Robin" one of the owners lied right to my face. At least, Eric my sales representative had some integrity. The things are poorly made toys! Spend a bit more and buy a riding MOWER/ TRACTOR from a reputable business. This Craftsman riding Tractor/ Mower is soft! I overheard the Texas representative speaking with the repair gentleman. He talked about how the company is trying to squeeze every drop of money and using the cheapest parts. The Craftsman does not have many of the Husqvana better parts & they use a round flimsy clip to hold the front wheels on. The first and second mower kept having the right wheel fall off. I was looking to upgrade to a Husqvana 52 inch and pay more. "Out of integrity Robin" said she would help me out and regardless we will work something out for more money but we would lose our extended warranty. She told me H. 52 was on clearance and it was the last one. I immediately asked her to hold it for me. She was happy to do so. Why not? MORE money and a new warranty agreement. While in the store, Eric the sales representative sold the One Last Mower that had been put aside for me. I immediately mentioned this to Robin who then told me not to worry because there were more. 30 infact! The 52inch H. has a systemic issue with its design. I heard the pro from Texas say there is no fix! You buy one of those abd you are really screwed! While protesting the Sears Store in Berlin, someone stopped and said, " your front wheel keeps coming off". They said, to take it somewhere and have it drilled as they had done. Look for something with a drilled axle and a cotter pin. You will have nothing but issues buying from these folks. They are not customer centric and once they have your money...The second piece of crap was in our garage all winter. About 7 months. I, Peter took it to Guys in Barre. They were very nice. They put inner tubes in the front tires (one kept leaking) and they greased the machine up. On the second mow of the season the front right tire fell off again! All we wanted was our money back so we could be free of this nightmare! But instead, The Sears in Berlin Vermont owners became immediately nasty. I have all the written communication as proof of their handling of this issue. Also, Tom "the Terrible" a bully referred to my girlfriend as he. This demonstrates how much he knows or cares about his customer. He also tried to intimidate me by driving his big truck at a high rate of speed into the bike path near where I was standing. Tom also used his body to push mine. I called the Berlin police department for I had just been assaulted. The officer asked if I had been hurt. I said no. He explained that If I was not hurt, there was no assault. With all respect, I asked, if I had been punched in the face and said it did not hurt then that also would not be assault? He recited the law. This now has nothing to do with business or money. Now, it is all about principle. Someone must stand for what is right and in this case, it is me. My husband and I ordered a clothes dryer online and picked it up at our local Sears, in Barre,VT. The dryer didn't heat well, even though it was brand new, so we called a repairman. The repairman checked our dryer and said it appeared to be defective and we should have Sears replace it. The repairman called Sears and explained the situation. Sears agreed to take the item back and order a replacement. We got the replacement dryer almost a week later. We had to drive to Sears and pick it up ourselves. It was the same model as the first dryer, and didn't dry heavy items like towels well. In fact, it took 2 hours to dry 4 bath towels. I called Sears in Barre again. I spoke to a man, who was busy and said he would have to call me back. He later left me a voicemail, saying his manager will not allow us to return the dryer - she thinks the first one worked fine too. We were told to call Electrolux and have a repairman come out at our expense. I called the Sears main number instead and had them arrange for an Electrolux repairman free of charge, as a 2 week old dryer is still under warranty. I will never buy anything from Sears in Barre-Berlin again, nor will I have an online item delivered there They are awful. read more

August 12, 2015 Tom & Robin Coulter Sears Barre-Auth Hometown #3503 1598 US Route 302 Berlin Barre, VT 05641 Tom & Robin Coulter, I need to share this story with you. In April 2015 I purchased a GE 27.7 cu in French Door refrigerator-slate, model GFE28HMHES, item 046 84687. Erik Moon was the salesman. We paid $2399.99 plus tax. The unit worked fine until July 15 or so, when we noticed the lower compartment was freezing food and the upper compartment was only cooling to only 50 degrees or so. Called the Sears Parts and Repair Service on or around July 20 (800-469-4663). We were told that before they would dispatch a repair person (under warranty terms) we needed to change the water filter. Went to Sears in Berlin VT, you did not carry the part. Called Powell, Katina (GE Appliances) Katina.Powell@ge.com and had three water filters shipped, paid $150 plus shipping charges. Filter arrived, was installed and line purged properly. Waited 24 hours, and this did not repair the problem. Called Sears Parts and Services, repair person was dispatched and arrived on Tues. Aug 4. Upon arrival and inspection of the refrigerator we were told by the repair person that the mother board, a fan motor and a sensor needed to be replaced. Parts could be overnighted, but he could not return until August 18 to install them. Called GE Customer Advocacy line on August 4, (888-266-6560), after much negotiation, they agreed that even though the unit was purchased over 30 days ago they would replace/even exchange the refrigerator. I was given a new delivery record# 3573179. Sears called August 5 to confirm a delivery on August 6 between 2:00 and 4:00. I arrived home @ 2:00 on August 6. By 5:00 Sears had not arrived. Called GE Customer Advocacy line and was told the truck was running late and they would arrive by 6:15. Called GE Advocacy line again @ 7:30 and was told they would have the driver call us directly and tell when to expect the replacement refrigerator. At 11:00 PM I went to bed, and never received the delivery, never got the call from the driver ( a subcontractor), we never heard from Sears or from GE Customer Advocacy line about what the delay was or when we could expect delivery. On Friday August 7, 2015, I expected to hear from Sears to reschedule to explain why they failed to arrive in the nine hour window I waited for them. But did not hear from Sears as to where our refrigerator was, when it would be delivered, or about what happened to the scheduled delivery on August 6, 2015. Nothing, no apologies, no explanations, no contact. On August 10, I contacted the "hot-line" @ 888-266-6260 and spoke to Margo who acknowledged we were due a refrigerator(even-exchange) and wanted to ship the refrigerator on August 20, but after much persuading assured me the refrigerator would be delivered on August 13, 2015. I received confirmation from Mariam A (shc@customerservice.sears.com) via e-mail on 8/12/2015 @12:11 PM that we were set to receive the new refrigerator on 08/13/2015 between 8:00 and noon, and to expect a call between 6-9 pm to confirm. At 6:15 PM 08/12/2015 an automated message was left on our voice mail to call 888-587-3452 because there was a delay in the delivery of our refrigerator. I called and they told me the delivery was now delayed until August 20, 2015. At this point I feel pretty helpless. I have paid $2400 for a product that did not perform as anticipated. I have spent several hours on the phone with GE & Sears, and sent several e-mails back and forth. I spent nine hours waiting on 8/6 for a delivery that never came. I am still without a working refrigerator, and have lost hundreds of dollars in food from spoilage (at last count over $750). I chose to purchase this major appliance at the Sears in Berlin, because I knew it was locally owned and I wanted to support local business. I remember the article in the Bridge on May 16, 2013 marking the anniversary of your purchasing the store. However, I am at a loss now. Given the lack of customer service provided by Sears Holdings Corporation/Sears Holding Solutions and GE, I can honestly tell you I will not patronize Sears again. Furthermore, I have contacted the Vermont Attorney General and filed a consumer complaint against Sears Holdings Company. I am sharing this with you because I want to know how you will respond. Maybe you will do the even exchange for Sears Holdings Company and take this headache off my hands. Maybe you will rise up and offer us a gift card to reimburse us for the food spoilage. Maybe you will try to build some consumer confidence by offering us even more. Perhaps a refund is in order, you can come and get the refrigerator. Before I speak with the attorney generals' office, I thought I would make you aware of this unacceptable and utterly ridiculous fiasco. Yeah, we went prepared to buy a new refrigerator. The sales woman noticed us and was nice, but it was such a confusing convoluted mess of a process that we gave up and just left. She said it was a special order (fine, no problem) and although we had a coupon and she said it wan't good for online sales (we were physically in the store so I'm not sure how that's an online sale -- if I had wanted to order it online I would NOT HAVE COME TO THE STORE). And then there was all this stuff about 10 percent off if we got a Sears card (I think) but I had no idea if our "online" order qualified for that, and delivery charge was X amount if Z happened, or B amount if we did C, but only if we had a customer number, or a sears card or some such other, blah, blah, blah. It got very confusing and frustrating but we were willing to go with it and then she said it would be 6 weeks before the refrigerator was delivered. At this point we left, went right across to the Bouchard Pierce, we were in and out in about 10 minutes, no nonsense, and it will be delivered in 5 days. We paid a TINY bit extra, but I would have paid quadruple that extra amount to have an easy straightforward process and not have to wait 6 weeks to have a refrigerator. The saleswoman at Sears was nice and courteous and in some ways I really don't think it was her fault. It's the corporate bureaucratic BS of Sears that made this process INTOLERABLE. I think she's pretty powerless in the face of whatever the higher-ups in Sears insist on. But it's important for Sears to understand that making the customer confused and frustrated and miserable will only work a certain amount of the time. And what was the NONSENSE about 6 weeks for delivery when we're getting the SAME EXACT product in five days? I'd avoid. read more

Great guys from the Berlin VT Sears just delivered my new dryer, which included having to remove and put back the room door, jerry rig the too-big vent hose, and then they even helped by fixing my louvre doors while they were at it. The manager there had also been helpful, friendly and honest in his recommendations. I've used this Sears for years and will continue to! read more
