It kinda takes a while to get to one end of the trail. But it's totally worth it when you get to the end because you can swim, though there's a current, and take in the views of the national refuge there in the lower keys.

There is a small parking lot and no public restroom but they do have a porta pottty there. It's surrounded by big rocks so you wouldn't want to go in the water there. Sammy Creek Landing is no exception. Basically it was once upon a time a home but today it's a local park but we can't figure out if it's a county park or from the state. We always wonder because one year it's nice and relaxing and another year it's overgrown with weeds and kind of sad. I remember when it had no parking (limited to parking on Old State Road 4A), and nowadays it has a parking lot and it's landscaped and it's pretty clean. Nonetheless the place is nice... and I cherish the memories I have of this place.

I had never been fishing before, and the sheer size of some of the fish Capt Jay helped us haul out of the ocean was incredible! It was my first time seeing snapper and grouper in person, and it's a pity that none of us had the resources to take our catch home (our hotel room's mini-fridge wouldn't have stood a chance). Nevertheless, catch-and-release-style fishing was surprisingly very fun and a lot more fast-paced than I thought fishing would be. I do believe many of Capt Jay's customers bring their own coolers to cart their fish home, which is something we will keep in mind for our next trip down. We ended our trip with some snorkeling (with the aforementioned groupers and and thousands of yellow fish that I forget the name of) and that was amazing!! FYI, Capt Jay is fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English, and really is a genuine, kind guy who works his hardest to ensure that you have a wonderful trip, weather permitting. Whether for snorkeling or deep sea fishing, I would highly recommend you give Capt Jay a call.

The boat is Hydra Sports 33 with advanced fish finders. Always fully prepared. Jay uses best rods, reels (Stella Sw, Daiwa Saltiga) lines and baits to catch whatever you want. If you would like to catch some food, You will probably limit out within hours for yellowtails, snappers and groupers. For those who wish to catch a trophy, hundred pounds of groupers, amberjack, tuna, Sharks are common. By the way, on Summer time, we released more than 40 Mahi because we have already limited out. Highly recommended.

But at the end of the day, this is one of my favorite places to spend time. Some people just don't get how special these protected areas are... or just how vast it is. The area is encompasses an area that is over 8 miles long on Sugarloaf Key (accessed from mile marker 17 and partially from mile marker 20) and includes a lot of spots that locals visit often including Burn Out Bridge (aka End Of The Road), Loop Road Trail, Sammy Creek Landing, Old Overseas Nature Trail (west end of Old State Road 4A), Jumping Bridge, and the Secret Beach Old State Road 4A passes through most of it and there are a few residences as well but majority of the area is mangroves and open water. There is plenty of area to support incredible wildlife; you may not see much of it visiting but after years of bicycling and walking all the trails and focal points I've been lucky enough to see plenty; come common and some rare to see... in addition to the common sightings like raccoons, snapper, tarpon and crabs, we've seen key deer, spoonbills, horseshoe crabs, bonnet head sharks, bald eagles and other birds of prey. Park at the corner of Old State Road 4A and Sugarloaf Boulevard and walk east past the vehicle barriers to walk to Jumping Bridge (its just what is sounds like) and if feeling adventurous then continue onto Loop Road Trail (stop at the open water areas for a dip in the water), find the Secret Beach and walk the nature trail to Burn-Out Bridge (and watch the boats travel between Sugarloaf and the Atlantic) ... Or drive past the intersection to the west and stop by Sammy Creek Landing... it's a park with a boat launch, decent fishing and a good spot to bring lunch/picnic.... Or go onto my favorite and drive (or bike) all the way to the west end of Old State Road 4A, park the car and continue onto the Old Overseas Nature Trail. It's a very long hike to the end but it is gorgeous with some areas in the shade (tree canopy over the trail creating a tunnel like experience) and a lot in the sun too; great views of the water and mangroves. For those that have sweet blood... bring insect repellent/lotion

We settled in and set off for the ride to Looe Coral reserve for snorkeling- 1st stop. We beat the crowds and secured the best tie off spot. We spent about an hour enjoying the below the surface life. We even swam with a sea turtle. The snorkeling was the best I've ever experienced, and I guess that's why Looe Key is one of the top ten worldwide snorkeling places listed in last month's issue of SCUBA. After capturing some kicking videos underwater with the GoPro, we climbed back aboard and headed out to the flats to check out a few sand bars. He picked a great spot, devoid of other fun seekers and after a beat we opted to head out for more touring. We went back into the mangroves and checked out the local sights. Cap'n Clint was so forthcoming with information and he is knowledgeable and so much fun! He has history here, and it shows. I hope to go again and I am definitely booking this for when my family comes to visit. Things spotted while boating: sea turtle diving, sting ray, some type of shark (No dolphins, . this time, but they're out there somewhere!) Things not spotted: other tours .
