We've made a few trips to Prudence Island and always end up at Prudence Variety. Yesterday July 11…read morewe needed stamps and were surprised that they had a mini post office. The folks who run it are nice enough! We bought a few sandwiches and drinks which were pretty much in line price wise, with convenience store prices (maybe a bit higher.)

Outside of a few local veggie stands, the only store, It is frequently referred to as Marcy's place after the wonderful woman that kind of hovers over the area. And no, Prudence Island Variety is NOT in Newport. As usual Yelp refuses to accept the address I put in and places the store some place where it isn't. And so it goes. The front door and porch is only a few steps from the ferry and as in the case with most small island general stores, it also serves as the post office, local book exchange, place to post or read local notices, look for lost pets, trade info or just sit around and shoot the crap with people. It's hard to believe but a casino once stood on the spot where the small store is now located. The hurricane of 1938 eliminated the casino as well as most of the other buildings on the island. The store hasn't changed much over the years. The addition of the Del's lemonade machine was the one huge addition. They always have fresh coffee, locally made muffins and pastries, a small case for frozen stuff, lots of junk food, and a sundry collection of mugs, shirts, key chains, pictures and stickers with the Prudence Island logo. At various times pizza, sandwiches, and small hot meals are offered. Everything is pretty much at the whim of Marcy so you never know exactly what they will or won't have at any given time. It's just a small place, sort of messy, dark, unorganized with Marcy scooting back and forth from the post office to the store, lost in her own world. You patiently wait for her because you are definitely on island time once you go through that door. But then that's a big part of the charm and appeal. It's easy to imagine the store looking and operating exactly the same way many, many years ago. If you ever go to the island you will stop at this store. Buy some junky survivors perhaps or some treats to enjoy out on the porch or on the picnic tables over looking the bay. Maybe get sniffed by some of the local dogs, talk and laugh with the very friendly and interesting local people. Perhaps even start to observe Marcy's routine and wonder exactly what in the world she is doing.

Just want to mention that CVS recently raised the cost of a prescription of mine by a factor of…read morefour, no reason given, no discounts available, just quadrupled the price out of greed, presumably. I was able to get it refilled elsewhere - same manufacturer, by the way - for slightly less than I paid for it at CVS previously. This is really an ugly company and we should all do what we can to avoid spending any money there.

Definitely in the running for the worst run worst staffed least honest CVS in existence…read more They place the pickup orders behind the counter so you have to summon a clerk who because they are staffed as if its a Taco Bell can take a considerable amount of time to both contact and appear at the counter. This entirely defeats the purpose of pickup well mostly since at this store you would still be waiting for someone to check you out. At the Metacom Ave CVS in Warren they place pickup orders in a kiosk for pickup making it convenient. The pharmacy showed a prescription as processing and soon available for two months. I had some extra time so decided to quiz the pharmacist about this puzzle and they told me that EVERY day they order same medication and it was NEVER available to them. Meanwhile I had a script for same at Walgreens the first month CVS flaked out and through some miracle they were able to obtain it. I transferred the Walgreens script to Lifespan Pharmacy for month two and they had it within 24 hrs BUT after my conversation with the CVS pharmacist CVS placed a HOLD on my medication through my insurance so Lifespan had to call to have them release it. Beyond belief. Pharmacist from CVS had stood there with a straight face and lied continuously about the med being ordered unsuccessfully on a daily basis. CVS is the biggest PBM in the US. They can get a med before other pharmacies if they actually order it. Wait it gets better. Once I had a script that they overcharged me for so about 6 days afterward I went back to obtain a refund which was not an issue HOWEVER the CVS system saw the refund date as the date of the script being obtained by me. This medication is a very low level sleeping med so its the law not to dole it out even a day early which I am aware of and its not an issue. When I returned to the day for my refill I was told I would have to wait 6 more days to get a refill. Took me a minute to figure out their foul up - tried to explain it but NO, I went home to get the actual bottle to show I wasn't a liar. To add insult to injury this CVS is located at the worst red light in all of the East Bay. Getting in and out of there is a flipping nightmare. Stay clear and hope they close this location.
