My wife gave me the home barista class as a birthday gift and I have to say hands down it has been if of the best presents. Sam the instructor was very knowledgeable and with the small class size was able to not only talk/teach to the areas we had questions on but also be able to spend one on one time with each of us. I just finished the program yesterday and I'm completely blown away. I honestly feel indebted to the staff because I'm so grateful for what I learned. This course saved me probably $50k in mistakes that I probably would have made. I absolutely loved the program and I would consider it to be malpractice to open a coffee shop and not go through this program, regardless of industry experience. Bob, Paulo and Alex are industry titans recognized for their talents on a national and even international level. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from them. As an added benefit, the staff is just really cool, genuine and passionate about what they do. They are invested in building you up and seeing you become successful. That is very rare find in this world. I suffer from ADD and social anxiety when I'm in new environments and the staff made this program very welcoming and put me at ease. They offer a paid-for-group lunch every day, that I declined all five days because I had to work and mentally reset. Nobody gave me a hard time about it. I really appreciated that level of respect they gave me. If I can do this program, anyone can. There is no doubt that my classmates and the staff bonded together and we all departed on such a high note, wishing each other the best. I'm seriously going to frame and hang my diploma next to my MBA on the shelf. I just feel good about associating myself with such good people that are enormously talented and helpful. I took the Seattle Barista Academy 4 days training course starting from Jan. 12, 2015. I have two goals when entering the class: learning basic barista skills to understand the working flow in the coffee shop, and gain any knowledge of roastery business on which I want to build up my startup. After the 4 days' class, I would say I completely accomplished the goal with the tremendous helps from trainer Alexa and Owner Robert/Bob. A couple of things I think SBA (Seattle Barista Academy) does pretty well: 1) In the morning of day 1, before anything starts, the owner Bob held a session to ask each individual student for what goals we want to target via coming to the school. Based on that, all the following training and business consultings are highly crafted to our special needs. 2) Small class training. For the 4 or 5 days class, the class size is limited to less than 7 people. For our sessions, there were me and the other student travelling out of town. Because of the smaller size, the class could be catered better to our needs, and also we have enough time to practice the skills to pull a perfect espresso shot, which does require a lot of time to find your own perfect procedure. 3) Since the owner Robert is extremely experienced in the coffee industry, when it's time to the business sector of the class, he gave you very detailed guideline of opening your specific business and even the cost breakdown list and to-dos timeline. This is super helpful from a expertise in the industry to give you step-by-step guidance to help you jump start quickly. Overall, this is a great experience, if you leave in the Seattle area and want to jump start your coffee related business, no matter it's a coffee drive through, coffee shops or coffee cart, give Seattle Barista Academy a try. For the serious coffee drinker. I took the 3 hour course and really enjoyed it. I recently purchased a high quality barista machine and found this class very helpful. What I liked most about the class is that there are only 6 students and the instructor was a real perfectionist. We had plenty of opportunity to practice making coffee and milk artwork (although it is a lot harder than one would think). There was plenty of supplies and a lot of interaction with the instructor. The machines we used were very high quality commercial barista machines and coffee grinders. Plenty of room for the students to practice. It was a great Groupon deal as well. read more

I did their 3 hour home barista course which I purchased through a Groupon. Scheduling it was a little painful (multiple emails and phone calls to get a confirmation) but the course itself was fantastic. Over the 3 hours we covered extraction, milk steaming, and latte art. The class was small (6 people) and the instructor did a great job of providing personalized advice to each person based on how they were going (i.e. he'd assist people that were struggling and provide more advanced exercises to people that were excelling). I took a "Home Barista" class at the Seattle Barista Academy and it was a packed afternoon agenda and super fun! I learned to get a superior shot of espresso from my machine, how to get great frothy milk, and how to make Latte art. The teachers had tons of experience in different cafes on different machines. We had plenty of time to practice on a variety of espresso machines, with an instructor next to us coaching us. It was helpful to learn in a group setting because I learned from everyone else's questions. One thought for when you take the class, when you have questions during practice time; the trainers are really busy with all the students, too, so be sure to proactively get the attention of the trainer and ask away. Did I mention there is all you can drink lattes all day long? It fascinated me to taste the difference in lattes depending on what methods were used to grind, tamp, length of the pull, and the type of machine. So don't be shy about asking to drink lattes that other people make. I had a great time in the 3-hour afternoon class, and I want to go back for the 2-day class and really become a master! read more

I had a bad experience my first time attending this class, but the owner called me personally to apologize and invited me to attend another class. I understand that everyone has bad days, and that just must be what I experienced the first time, because my second class was like night and day to the first experience. The instructor for my second class was informative and helpful, and clean lol. He answered all of our questions, checked on our progress, and was funny and easy to learn from.
