A Very Die Hard Christmas -- Seattle Public Theater For 33 straight years, my sister (WCP) and I have watched Die Hard and Die Hard 2 every December. A few years ago, a friend introduced me to this parody play -- and now it's officially part of my holiday tradition. I come back year-over-year because each production is different, clever, and full of new surprises. This year's version was one of the best yet: Upgraded set pieces, including a tall wall with TWO vents and working doors Smartly updated jokes and swapped-out 80s references Fresh additions to the villain list (shoutout to Huey Lewis & The News and Vidal Sassoon) And a perfect recreation of the iconic vent scene where McClane mutters: "Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs..." followed by "Now I know what a TV dinner feels like." This was my 3rd time, my friend Mary R's "don't ask how many," and my sister's very first time. The show was hilarious and high-energy -- but honestly, the best part was watching WCP react to it for the first time. Pure holiday magic. Seattle Public Theater nails the humor, nostalgia, and chaotic joy of Die Hard while giving audiences something new every December. An Afternoon That Really Took Flight Spent the afternoon at Seattle Public Theater for their production of Aviatrix, based on the life of Bessie Coleman. Set against the realities of 1917, the story follows Bessie Coleman's determination to become a pilot. As an African American and Native woman facing closed doors in the United States, she traveled to France to learn to fly and fulfill her dream of becoming a licensed pilot. What an incredible production. The performances and vocals were outstanding, and the music completely pulled me in. I wish they would release a soundtrack. I was not expecting the bonus of staying afterward for the post show talkback with the cast, artistic director, playwright, and composer. Flying high from this one. Bessie Coleman's story is inspiring, uplifting, and a reminder that sometimes you have to leave the ground everyone expects you to stay on. read more

Last year Steve and I heard about the stage production of A Very Die Hard Christmas. It's a parody of the movie Die Hard and how it is now preceived in more recent years to being a Christmas movie. We really wanted to go but alas it was sold out. But we were lucky to find it having dates this year and Steve seized the opportunity right away as far as tickets go. The Seattle Public Theater is a pretty small theater and lobby but the setting for it is great as all the shows would be intimate and the fact that the theater is right by Green Lake adds a scenic perk to the experience. The show was great and really funny! Very well organized and acted and it proved to be a very entertaining night for our first visit to Seattle Public Theater! read more

We visited this theater last week to see a hilarious Christmas musical called Very Diehard Christmas. This was my first time at this venue, as I've only been to Fifth Avenue and the Paramount before. While this is definitely a smaller, low-budget theater (the stage is tiny, and the props include children's toys), that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. The singing and acting were just as impressive as what you'd find in larger theaters! That said, there was one thing that caught us off guard: during the show, they shot Nerf guns and squirted water guns at the crowd. It would've been nice to have a heads-up about this when purchasing tickets. Luckily, we were in Row B and didn't get hit, but the front rows (and the surrounding 180-degree area) were sprayed multiple times. Most people laughed it off, but I can see how it could be frustrating if you weren't expecting it. Overall, this is a super fun group of performers, and I'd definitely come back. At just $10 a ticket, it was absolutely worth it! read more

This theater keeps me entertained on all my walk/runs around Greenlake. I always make a point to stop and look at this season's offerings. I think it's easy to forget it's here, even though it's something many people see on a regular basis. It's also easy to forget that it is easily accessible from a nearby parking lot. The inside is intimate, meaning almost all seats are great (a few do seem partially obscured), but since it's so small its easy to see and hear the performance without difficulty. You can buy from the theater directly, or I often see shows listed on Goldstar. There's multiple bathrooms, they sell drinks and a few snacks, they let you bring your drinks into the theater, but no eating in there. I recently saw A Very Die Hard Christmas, this was the best thing I have seen in a long time. I may make this a yearly tradition, l at least want to see it one more time in a future season. I've seen other things here in the past, but they escape me at this time. There's another Christmas themed show this season as well. This is the kind of place where it would be fun to be a season ticket holder, lots of places nearby to dine/drink before or after a show. Recently came to see A Very Die Hard Christmas - The Musical at Seattle Public Theater! Love this little theater for what it is, a place for local productions for some date night entertainment. My fiancé and I were laughing the whole time, and we though-roughly enjoyed the show. If they added more food/drinks options for purchase, it would make it even better! We bought reserved tickets, but we probably would have been okay buying general. When it's closer to showtime, they open any non-filled reserves seats to GA, so you still have a chance at the reserved seats. Parking is free and SO easy. A great community theater in the Greenlake area, SPT puts on an enjoyable show in an intimate playhouse. There is really no bad seat in the house. We saw their production of Christmastown, and it was a great production with the actors playing multiple roles. The front lobby is very narrow and packed before the production starts, and between people waiting to enter the seating area and people wanting to get a beer or wine at the little bar, there is not much room nor flow. They have a medium parking lot with limited spaces, but if you can get a spot, it's very easy access and entry. We would definitely see another production at SPT. read more

The theater isn't easy to locate but it's right by the large parking lot. I like it's smallish space inside which makes you feel like you're a part of the show. The actors walked past me several times (I sat by the steps that lead to the lobby) and it was fun to see them staying in character until they were totally out of the theater. They had multiple roles and they all played their parts well! Because the seating wraps around like a semi circle around the stage there were times I could only see the actors' backs but for the most part they did well moving around a lot to make sure everyone had a good view. The concessions had cookies, candy and beer as well as a donation based coffee /tea bar. Overall I enjoyed the Christmas play and had a good time! read more

I love this little theater! The first time I saw a show here I was so enthralled with this little old bath house turned performance arts space! The only obvious features that remain of the old structure are in the restrooms - a cute reminder of days of yore. I also liked that it was small enough that there wasn't a huge line for the restrooms at intermission and they offered some snacks and refreshments in the lobby area for reasonable prices. The two plays I have seen here thus far have been stellar. The actors, set design, costumes and lighting/music have been fabulous and I look forward to many more performances here. read more

It's a small, intimate theatre with lots of character! They have a parking lot which is really nice since most of the theatres in Seattle don't come with free (or any) parking. But late at night, it can be a little creapy walking along the path at Green Lake to your car. It's typically pretty cold in this theatre, so make sure to bring a sweater! Also, I am not a huge fan of the bathrooms here. Years ago, when I was a child, and came to summer camp at Green Lake those same bathrooms were used for people at the park/beach. They show wonderful plays at this theatre and the staff are super nice and helpful. It's a great atmosphere! read more

Hand to God, proof that muppet sex and hots for church teachers is what the cool kids do. Simulated ground and pounds make for FURious funs. Also, men's yellow short sleeve and khaki's is still a religiously stupid attire. Around of applause for the man who executed that role beauifully. He made me feel like a hot guy. Just visited the theatre for the first time to see Christmastown. The play and theatre exceeded my expectations to the nth degree! A wonderful theatre with an intimate setting. We felt like we were part of the action. Great lighting, comfortable seats and most importantly, the acting and play was top notch! So funny and clever! A bit stretched out and long runtime for the theme but worth the wait for the finale. This is only a limited experience opinion but if it was liked by me, a really seasoned theatre goer will absolutely love this play and theatre. The staff, actors and production really cares. Since I messaged Sprizee about my experience I thought I might as well make it a review... I've been here once and what I remember is that it was small and the seats/rows are very close together, basically I felt the guy next to me was on top of me. The place was also freezing cold so I was thankful he was sitting on top of me it kept me warm. Oh and if you have to use the restroom during the show you are not suppose to flush the toilet because they can hear you in the theatre if you do. read more

we had a very unfortunate incident when we attended a die hard Christmas at this theater. They have a mask policy, which is fine. But they sell drinks, and we were drinking, and my husband had taken his mask down to take a drink of his beer. The person in front of him saw him do this and asked him to put his mask back on. He told her that he was just taking a drink of his beer and he would put it back when he was done. this person went and complained to management, who then came and harassed my husband, never mind that there were four white people sitting across the way who didn't wear a mask the entire time. My nonwhite husband was the only one who was spoken to, and they eventually said they were going to kick him out of the theater. If you are going to have a mask required policy, That is fine. Then don't serve drinks that will have people removing their masks when they're drinking or if you were going to enforce the masking policy, then do so equitably and not just choose non-white people to enforce it on. I will not be returning to the theater and I will make sure everyone I know knows that they are racist and they are selective enforcement of their policies. We came with a group of over 40 people and this is an annual thing that we do. We decided after tonight to never do it again, and to find another holiday event to attend instead. read more

First off, the mocha guy was so great. I didn't bring cash, and we scrounged up all of the quarters my fiancee had in her purse and were about 50 cents short. He gave me the drink anyway. It was cold, so I wanted a nice wintery mocha and was happy! We later found a couple of quarters and got him back. This place is so tiny and has a neighborhood feel, I just really like that about the Bathhouse theatre. The show was fun and I felt like they were my friends from the neighborhood (although I can't say I knew them). I highly recommend this place. Yes they have troughs in the bathroom. I'm cool with that--I don't want them to modernize this quaint little historic place, and troughs don't bother me. I'm a man, darnit. read more

If you like theater, want to pay a bit less than your broadway-type theater prices & see some quality, local performers in an intimate venue, this is the ticket! Seattle Public Theatre is a fantastic venue offering up modern plays with solid acting, directing and production values. SPT consistently chooses interesting works with something to say. The actors and directors employed are frequently some of the biggest names in Seattle, and they also offer great opportunities for some of the young performers in town. The theatre itself is cozy but comfortable, and the ticket prices make it affordable for virtually every theatregoer. The small lobby can cause bottlenecking heading into the restrooms or the theatre itself, and sometimes it can be tricky trying to reach the concession stand before the show or during intermission. My biggest complaint with the theatre has to do with the bad behavior of some of the patrons. Because of the intimacy of the space, the curtain will frequently be held, 5,10 and sometimes 15 minutes to wait for tardy audience members to arrive. As a theatre patron who consistently arrives more than 30 minutes before a show, the additional time feels like an eternity. Overall, I am a big fan of the theatre, and I will certainly continue to attend shows here! read more

Believe me, I will try to restrain myself, but I write this review in a state of utter disgust. I have had series tickets to Seattle Public Theater for many years, and have attended several individual plays at this theater for years before that, going back to the days when it was called "The Bathhouse Theater". There have been many good plays, and a few excellent plays, even within the last couple of years. But this 2018-2019 season has been uniformly awful, and the current production of "Dry Land" is probably the worst play I have seen in my 46 years of Seattle theater-going, which has included at least a dozen different theaters around the city. I have noticed that attendance at SPT has been dropping as the season progresses, so perhaps someone will take note and stop trying to pick "socially relevant" plays that are not entertaining, not enriching, not deep -- just PC and preachy, and often self-consciously avant-garde. But it will be too late for me. I have one more ticket left in this series and I doubt I will even bother to attend. Sooooo many better ways to spend an evening. "Dry Land" starts right off with the gratuitous full nudity of several young women (supposed to be 17 & 18 year olds) as they change into their swimsuits and horse around. At other points in the show we are also treated to this nudity. (I hope my review does not inspire an increase in pedophile attendance.) The language of these young women is explicit and vulgar. It has been a long time since my high school days, true, but I find it hard to believe this level of profanity and crudeness occurs among female high school athletes. In case someone reading this still wants to see the play, I won't reveal the one plot "development" of the story, despite it being pretty obvious from scene one. However, I will say that the play tries to prove its modernity and social relevancy by a series of single sentence, throw-away lines throughout, covering such issues as racism, anorexia, child molestation, lesbianism, teen suicide, teen drinking and drugs, teen promiscuity, kinky sex, S & M, oral sex, abortion pills ... and more. Again, these issues are not explored, just thrown in randomly. Really, nothing is explored. Some stuff just happens to unlikeable characters. The playwright was wise not to include an intermission or no one would see the last half. So "Dry Land" is just the worst play in a series of bad plays. Let me move on to the theater itself. Since the last play, SPT has changed both the women's bathroom on one side of the lobby, and the men's bathroom on the other side of the lobby, to "gender neutral", although the formerly-men's restroom says, helpfully, "This one has urinals." Neither of these bathrooms are single occupant. Don't know about the other, but the formerly-women's has 4 or 5 stalls and a door to the outside. The door is locked, but still ... as one of the women I go with pointed out, women need to judge the safety of a restroom upon entering. Finding a man in the restroom does not signal "safe". One of the attendants said "Oh, we expect that our long-time customers will go to the restroom they have always used." Oh, really? And don't you expect any new customers? I suspect the long-time customers will do their best to avoid the bathrooms, or just decide SPT is no longer worth attending, as the other people in my group and I have. read more

My wife and I went to see My Wonderful Day last night. What a wonderful experience. It had been about 15 years since I had seen a production at the Bath House Theater. I remembered it being an intimate setting, but had forgotten how small it actually was. If you like to feel like you are a part of the play, this is the place to be. The production of My Wonderful Day was, in fact wonderful. The cast did a tremendous job and kept the level of action and excitement up in this comedy. If you are looking for a great night out at an intimate and well priced theater, you could do far worse than this. read more

I love this small theatre. It is very intimate, and dark, and has the feel of an off-off Broadway theatre. I recently saw the Habit 14 production, and it was HILARIOUS and professional. Every seat has a good view because it is such a small space. The lobby got a little tight before this general admission shows, but the staff is pleasant, and everyone got seated in good time. The ticket prices are also very affordable which is nice. Parking ot is pretty convenient, just a small walk away along a short path. read more

I'd just returned from watching Tryst by C. Leach at the Bathhouse, and wow, was it an experience. I hope you can still go see it, as it deserves accolades. It's playing until October 25th. The acting was solid, and the play was incredibly well written. It takes only two actors - and I think the performances of both will haunt me for awhile. It's a mystery/drama set in the Viktorian England, about a man named George Love who makes his living by duping unsuspected women into marrying him - and he gets a surprise of his life in the face of a lonely spinster... Now, about the theater itself - it's mid-size, intimate, and inexpensive. I paid 25 bucks for a ticket today, including fees over the internet. It doesn't get better than that, unless you're seeing a student play. You have to walk at least a short distance to this theater as it sits right on the lake, and hey, exercise never hurts. I was so impressed, I'm buying a season subscription for the rest of the plays - all of which sound impressive. read more

This is a small intimate theatre. Most seats have good sightlines although, those on the side far end are limited in their view. We saw The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. It was a well done production that was laugh out loud funny. A little short for the cost but enjoyable nonetheless. This theater has parking for free which is a definite plus. I love the intimacy of this small theater, and how welcoming it is. What prompts me to write this review is their current show, "Amadeus", which is absolutely astounding. I am not a classical music buff, but had also seen "Amadeus" in movie version, and I came unprepared to be as blown away as I was by SPT's adaptation of the story. Everything was top notch, from the actors, their costuming, the preciseness of movements on stage, and a setting (and lights) which led one to focus on the story and the interplay of the characters, rather than the 'frothy' set of the movie. Once again it was a reminder of what great talent can be had on stage in Seattle. And with the SPT it comes at a very reasonable price. Parking is plentiful and free at the closest Greenlake parking a lot, which is only steps away from the theater. I knocked one star off because SPT hasn't been able to afford to send out real paper tickets yet, and as a season ticket-holder my abysmal calendaring skills lead me to email them about our next shows more often than necessary. read more

It goes without saying that the plays are always great. But beyond that the people are great. My husband and I had tickets for a 7:30 p.m. show. It usually takes us 30 minutes to get there and we left in time for a nice dinner before the show in a neighborhood restaurant. Unfortunately, there was a horrendous accident that basically closed the route we were on. We tried different routes to get there, but after 2 hours on the road we realized we were not going to make it. We called the theatre around 7:20 p.m. and explained the circumstances. They offered to change our tickets for another show. How incredible is that! Support this theatre!! (and believe GoogleMaps even if it makes no sense at the time). read more

SPT is a one of a kind place not to be ignored. They offer incredible main stage productions that always leave you thinking. The intimate space in not crowded, but rather inviting. But one thing you can never overlook is the year-round Youth Program. For a worthwhile fee (unless you need a scholarship, which are always available) any child who wants can sign up for a play for their grade range. The youth program is the most welcoming, safe, loving, and supportive home you could ever wish to be a part of. Not to mention the directors and staff are all skilled and caring and want what's best for each individual. Not an actor? No problem. Most all tech positions for youth shows are open to anyone ages 13-19, with no experience needed. If you're interested in seeing a piece of theatre, come to the bathhouse. It will always be amazing. Even the youth shows, which are always free, continue to impress all audiences. Get to the bathhouse, you won't be disappointed. read more

Last night we saw "The Happy Ones," another excellent production. Seattle Public Theater has outstanding acting and direction in the most intimate setting one might imagine.
