I love supporting my local theater community! Been a fan of taproot since I moved to Seattle 13 years ago. Well run, well managed and consistent. They are fantastic and everyone should go see more theater at this location. Currently too many older folks! It's bizarre, we need more ways to get regular/young people involved. I've been involved in east coast theater community in Toronto and we have a lot more diversity and easily more younger people involved in, volunteering for and attending theater shows than in Seattle where it looks like live theater is for the retired community. It is not! Everyone should have access to live theater. We need to change this pronto. read more

This is a small theater in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle. Upon entering it the first time I was surprised by how intimate it was. You are so close to the actors and action you feel as if you are fully immersed in the play. The product value also surprised me as it was a large cast for such a small venue. At intermission we explored the bar and lobby area, this was also surprisingly expansive with reasonably priced treats. read more

Taproot Theatre has a lovely children's program, including summer camps. During the school year, they have weekly classes (which lasts about two months) culminating in a performance *in a real theatre.* It is so special. My daughter has attended two summer camps and one of the school year classes. She has loved them all but having the chance to perform in a theatre has really cemented her love of theatre. I can't wait to see what else she does in her next class and neither can she! read more

We saw Georgiana and Kitty, Christmas at Pemberley. It was such a great show. Heartwarming, festive, and funny. Honestly I was sold at their initial curtain appeal, where they did a skit to raise money before the show. I haven't laughed that hard in a while, if you can believe it. The venue is small and intimate, creating a really personal experience for the audience. I loved that they had Rachel's ginger beer as a beverage option too, just to top it off. read more

The audio threshold frequencies I can hear are shifted lower than average, meaning sounds that might be heard as a whisper by other people can sound normal volume to my ears. Typically, this has meant that when I go to the theatre, the acoustics can be a bit much for my ears and I get a headache. This was not the case with Taproot Theatre Company, a place I came with friends growing up to see plays during birthday parties. It is one of the few local theatres I have attended and not gotten a headache. The seating was comfortable and the performance was entertaining. The actors and actresses brought the plot to life in an animated way without over-exaggerating their emotions. All around good experience and I was able to focus more on the play and acting itself since acoustics were a non-issue. Positively marvelous from my perspective. read more

Wow.... I would give this company a million gold stars if I could. I've been to a few plays over the years and have never been disappointed. I went to a recent production off"The Hello Girls" and it was amazing. The relent of this group the simple but intricate sets. The seats in this theater are awesome. Not a bad seat in the house. Watched the Sherlock show a few weeks back and loved it! Small intimate venue with actors who did an excellent job. Highly recommend!

I really appreciate how comfortable I felt going to see a play at their theater during the pandemic. All food was kept outside of the theater, so nobody in the audience took off their masks. As total Seattle-Newbies we wanted to try some cultural things in and around the city and found the taproot theatre and we loved the idea of enjoying dracula right before Halloween. And we were not disappointed, the ticket purchase online was easy, the crew in the theater was cordially, we had some great seats and we enjoyed the play very much. The actors were really good, there is absolutely no one I would say that wasn't good. I like the size of the theatre, it's intimate and I can imagine that you have a good view from every seat. I adore this theatre. I've been once to see The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge, and it was a great experience from start to finish. There is free parking at BoA down the street just two blocks down. The inside has a little cafe with food and drinks. I went with a hot chocolate that was delicious. Drinks are allowed in the theatre as long as they have a lid. The place itself is small, well kept, extremely clean, nice staff, and just a very pleasant venue. Most of the seating in the Jewell main stage seems to be good. We sat on the 2nd level, as those were the seats available at time of purchase, and I really didn't mind. For this play, it was a court room setup so the 2nd floor was fine. I could see how it wouldn't be ideal for a different play though. Definitely do the front row if you're on the 2nd floor (any side would be fine). My only recommendation is I would not sit on the front row if you're on the main floor because some of the seats were very close to the actors and the chairs are different and do not look as comfortable as the others (stadium v stand alone). Overall the seating was pretty comfortable for a 2-hr play. The play itself was fantastic. Sound was great. All the acting was great. No glitches or anything. We went for an early bird show so the room wasn't full which was nice to not be sitting next to anyone and feel overly crowded. It was somewhat of an older crowd for this particular show on a weeknight; some of them a little noisy. I didn't notice any kids at the show. The ticket prices seemed a little steep for such a small theatre; however, after one visit, I will say it's definitely worth the price. I will definitely be a regular here, and I can't to see what comes up in 2017. read more

Saw Jeeves in Bloom. Tickets were sold out more than a week in advance, so we ended up with their $10 "standing" tickets (e.g. watching the show standing the entire time :))...well...actually luckily, at last at the very last min, we were able to get the 2 seats way in the back where someone probably didn't make it into the theatre last minutes. I like the fact that the this is a theater that is true 270 degree angle where actors/actresses enter the stage from the traditional back of the stage, theatre entrance and side of the stage...so the performance really seemed intimate and it was great that everyone could understand/go along with the performance watching the same performance from different sides of the theatre. Their 2.5 hr performance was quite great, especially for a local theatre. The Jeeves in Bloom performance was funny as expected and pretty much at least 80% audiences were quite engaged/entertained with the actors/actresses' sense of humor. I think it's quite worth the price (normal seating ticket is around $35 or something). Best of all, parking didn't seem to be much of an issue here. There are some lots and street parking around the area. We were able to find some places nearby the theatre that was free to park as well. read more

Taproot is a fun little local theater. It's next to a Fred Meyer where you cannot park any longer FYI. It's definitely what you would call intimate, the seating is pretty close together. There is a lower and balcony level. If you sit on the sides of the balcony level, which we did, you see most of the stage at an awkward angle and see a lot of the actor's backs and where they did stage entrances. Otherwise, it's pretty cool. We saw "Kim's Convenience" here, a very funny play that was the precursor to the awesome show made in Toronto. I would watch something else here. And it's very close to many places to eat and drink, so you can make a night of it. read more

Wonderful little theatre in the heart of Greenwood! I saw Big Fish here with a side gallery seat from above - this was a great vantage point and I loved the intimate nature of this small space. I have tickets to some upcoming plays here and I am looking forward to seeing the different ways in which they transform this ideal theatre space. This is another one of those theatres of which you would never know existed in this neighborhood of cute restaurants and businesses. It is nestled in between other businesses I always drive by but haven't had the chance to peruse up close. Don't miss out on a wonderful experience at this theatre! Get tickets to a show here and prepare to be impressed! The sound and lighting team does an excellent job and the actors are talented - what more could you want? read more

A gem! My family of 4 attended "Babette's Feast" here tonight. What a treat! We were first considering "My Fair Lady" at a WAY larger venue, at more than double the cost, with seats in the 74th row. Instead we sat front (!) and center (!) at the Taproot Theatre. Zero regrets, my kids loved it, I can't recommend it enough. It was funny, entertaining, sweet, and powerful, especially the General's speech at the dinner. Bravo!! read more

The only difference between Taproot and major Seattle theaters is physical size: smaller stage, fewer seats, no room on the stage for 10,000 actors. This theatre company is as good as the best, if not better due to its innovation specific to space and budget. My family is not even the least bit religious but thoroughly enjoy how their plays present themes of faith (their mission). An example of this was their presentation of Man of La Mancha, where the main character is punished for calling out dishonestly in a corrupt religious power. read more

Taproot is a fun little spot! It's nice to support smaller, local theater. I can't quite give them all 5 stars because of how cramped the seating is in the theater but everything else was great. I think anyone who was a bit bigger would have a really hard time getting in and out of the seats. The guy next to me ran into my feet a couple times. Not much leg room. Everyone I encountered was very friendly and the show, Jeeves in Bloom, was excellent. Lots of laughs! We had seats in the second row from the stage off to the side just a bit and had a great view. All of the actors were very talented and we had a great time at the show. FYI if they are sold out they offer "standing room" tickets which are $10 each. You are standing on the upper level with a sort of partition to lean against. I can't wait to go back! read more

I have a new favorite theater - the Taproot in Greenwood. Spend some time strolling the shops on Greenwood Ave., eat at one of the great restaurants and take in a show at the Taproot. What a great night. The Taproot has such a warm, nieghborhood feeling and the plays get consistently good reviews. It only holds a couple hundred people, and the stage thrusts out into the audience, so the performances feel intimate and seeing 'The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge' at Christmas was a blast. Best thing for the budget conscious: they have lots of discount opportunities, like "pay what you can" night, and discounts for college students, half price matinees, cheap balcony seating - and really, even their full price tickets are reasonable compared with other theaters. read more

Bravo! I half-expected a bit of a lackluster community theater experience and was instead positively won-over and very pleasantly surprised! Last night, my wife and I attended the opening performance of "In the Book Of..." and were impressed with the quality of the theater itself, and especially enjoyed the new Stage door Cafe that just opened. The wine and beer choices were well thought out, our latte's were better than expected and the salad, sandwiches, and sweets were all well above-average. The food, atmosphere, and experience before and after the play were first-class. The production of "In the Book Of..." was completely engaging, very well acted, and excellently produced! Again, I expected a bit of a community or amateur production, and instead found myself caught-up in a standing ovation at the end of the evening. The intimacy of the theater itself was a treat and I found myself (and much of the audience) laughing out loud, cheering, clapping, and completely drawn-into the performance. Overall, 5+ stars and very, very well done Taproot Theater. I am looking forward to other plays this year - we'll absolutely be back again! read more

I love how quaint this theatre is. It's probably my fav bc it's so intimate. Great views from any seat. The actors are first class. Good free parking close by and some pay $3. Plenty of nearby food choices. Grab a pre show latte at adjoining One Cup Coffee and, as long as it has a lid, you can take it in the theatre. read more

The show was great! However, it was freeeeeeeeeeezing inside. The seats were really cramped. It was much more intimate than I was expecting, but we really enjoyed the show. Of course, this old person couldn't believe it started at 8pm and lasted until almost 11. I know it was a Friday night, but damn, I was exhausted. I've done more complaining than praising in this review, but I really did have a good time. read more

We love Taproot. All shows are family safe, although some take on serious themes. Each season has at least one comedy, one musical and one thought-provoking play. The set is cozy so everyone is close to the stage. In the balcony sides you are close enough to literally touch the actors. I took my son when he was 5 or 6 and it got him hooked on theatre; he did several shows in school. Great theatre and great people! And The Stage Door means we now have a great place to land before the show. And the serve a decent IPA. read more

Their plays are often quite good but their box office is a mess. We sent in a subscription request in September. When we heard nothing by Thanksgiving I asked the status of the order and was assured they had it and we would be receiving tickets soon. A month later we inquired again and was told not to worry the tickets would arrive shortly. 4 days before the first performance for which we requested tickets we called again. After confirming that they had our correct address and order they suggested we pick up our tickets at Will Call. We know they are a small theater but their business practices leave a lot to be desired. read more

We have been season ticket holders for a few years and meet up with friends to coordinate a great evening out. We love the intimacy of the theater and it's hard to get a bad seat. The productions we have seen so far have been beautifully acted and cleverly produced. I am looking forward to the production of Babette's Feast after a lost season due to Covid. read more

We went to see "A Christmas Carol" with the whole family. The theatre itself is great, very cozy and every seat looks like a good one. The play was really interesting and not what I expected but I enjoyed it's quirkiness. There was even a bit of improve where they had my (future) father-in-law get up and interact with one of the characters. Overall, good community theatre experience. Plus, lots of small restaurants around to grab dinner before the show! read more

Ok.. so I gave in and finally got a 5 play subscription for 2011. It wasn't a difficult choice, as the last three plays I've been to have been really good. The latest of which was The Odyssey. We went to see it the first weekend it was showing. A couple of actors fluffed their lines, but recovered nicely. The play followed relatively closely to the book and is highly recommended. I'm definitely looking forward to the remaining four plays for 2011, which include The Beams are Creaking (Douglas Anderson), Brownie Points (Janece Shaffer), Something's Afoot (James McDonald) and An Ideal Husband (Oscar Wilde). read more

Taproot is an intimate mid sized theater with every seat close to the stage with no need for mics. Naked sound is a gift since each voice and harmony finds its place in the natural acoustics of the house for a true live experience. A few balcony seats are obstructed view but nothing that would distract from enjoying the performance. This was my first visit and I was blown away by their production of Illyria. In this intimate venue you can watch the response of others in the audience and the players kept all in the house engaged and drawn into the story from beginning to end. The talent and professionalism of the players, musicians and trades at TR was not short of brilliant and was rewarded by a well-deserved and completely unforced standing ovation. We missed our show because the webpage had a different time posted than our tickets at will call. Talking to the box office felt like they just wanted us to leave. We were given ambiguous information like maybe when the manager (no name) gets back some time in January ( no date) you can get an unclaimed wheelchair accessible seat to a random show in place of tonight's show. Then I was given a generic theatre box office business card. I guess I'll follow up sometime in January and try to explain our situation to whoever this manager is. I really want to check this theatre out and give a better review but my experience with the box office staff tonight was really sad and disappointing. read more

We adored Charlie Brown Christmas at this theatre and also loved the cafe that was connected. Well-designed show and space.

The Taproot Theatre is small and very intimate. Seriously. I was in the front row on the left side and the stage was about a foot and a half from my legs. The performers got within 3 feet of me. I saw Le Club Noel which was a great show and was performed well. There was some sort of technical difficulty which delayed the start by 15 minutes but it was well worth it. Make sure you get there early to get parking, but if you have to you can park in the Fred Meyer parking lot a block away. Also make sure to get front row seats if you like intimate. read more
