I came by to watch a friend perform, and I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least! The theatre area is decorated with red curtains and wallpaper that completely make you forget you're in a bar. There's only a $10 suggested donation entrance fee, which is extremely reasonable. I love that Comedy Nest provides all the laughs while keeping it respectful. They have a list of rules for the comedians and banned topics, and it's great to see what a safe space it can be. Despite that, the comedians are hilarious, and everyone is able to have a good time. I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back! read more

If you want to get a feel of the pulse of Seattle then visit the "Rendezvous" for standup comedy and you won't be disappointed. We were here on Tuesday night when they charge $5 per guest for nearly 2 hours of entertainment (depending on the line up of performers). We sat through about 15-20 performers, got to learn great new stuff about the Seattle community and by the end my ears were hurting from my husband's loud laugh(Just kidding). Each of the comedians performed like a pro. They don't serve food and drinks downstairs so if you need something, you need to bring it from the bar or restaurant upstairs. read more

The comedy nest is great but warning , the place is very small and not enough chairs, so If you're looking for a place to sit and relax you must get there early . Looking for something to fill an evening during a visit to Seattle, I followed Yelp's advice and gave this open mic night a try. I admit that I was concerned from the description that it would be a little too hipster-crunchy-gluten free for my tastes, but the range of topics and perspectives was pretty much de rigueur for standup: sex, relationships, personal failings, werewolf baristas. The format consists of about 12-15 open mic acts doing 3 minute sets, followed by 10 minutes from a featured comic and then 20 from the headliner. Most of the open mic sets were of amateur quality, but everybody had at least a couple jokes land and a few comics' sets seemed ready for the big time. The featured performer was probably the weak link, with an act that consisted mostly of her detailing how weird she was. While I found her neuroses relatable and charming, they just weren't that funny. The headliner was solid; it was interesting to contrast the style and delivery of a (somewhat) more seasoned comic with the enthusiastic amateurs who preceded him. Overall it was a great show and we'll worth the five buck admission. Check it out if you're ever in Belltown on a Tuesday night. read more

Fun times with this open mic night! In the Rendezvous basement, $5 ticket, and a fair amount of seating (I've never seen it overflowing, but it doesn't hurt to get there early to buy a drink and head downstairs). They have a great concept of creating a welcoming, hate-free space for comedians, being especially supportive of females. It's a really genuine space with a lot more diverse material that you might not be able to enjoy elsewhere. read more

Love the Comedy Womb! The room is very cozy and intimate, there's a lot of positive energy, and there are great comics every week. The room is always packed early in the night and the audience stays engaged the entire time. As an added bonus, the show actually starts on time! Sitting through open mics at other places sometimes feels like a very long, painful marathon. But at the Comedy Womb, there seems to be a wider range of people and perspectives represented among the comics each week, which makes for a much more interesting and dynamic show. I think the other thing that helps is they have feature guests and headliners, so you get to see more seasoned comics closing out the show. Great place to fall in love with comedy, either as an audience member or a comedian. read more

As a former stand-up comedian who was the co-founder of the long-running "Queer as a Three Dollar Bill" at the Comedy Underground I am hands-down beyond amazed that The Comedy Womb frikkin' exists! It was hard being a female comic who was also GLBT identified up against hundreds of men per week at times performing against the same typical "personal ad" version of how good they were in bed and woeful observational humor that would never compare to their contemporaries. While I wasn't the best and had horrible sets because I wasn't ready or...at the time, a drunk....I pressed on and constantly pushed to change my work. Landing the "Queer" gig helped make me a better comic, host and improvisor - a rare gift in the stand-up world. There were about 20 (men and women combined) who stood out that were on it - and a fair amount of them I see on television. I opened for Steve Gelder, Dana Gould, Marc Maron and several others. Seeing giant have rough sets was amazing. It humbled me. And that's what made them work harder. It's rare to have an open mike that is also an incubator, like the Womb is growing to become. We had that feel with our show a bit and "Young Gunz", they show I got invited into to start getting time and writing worked on, was immensely helpful. But, I needed something more like I used to have in theatre - ensemble work. A fellow co-founder, who is now in theatre in San Francisco steadily, and I to this day still have that theatre mentality when it comes to approaching comedy. We needed an incubator, a safe place as GLBT comics to try and fail without the undertones of machismo that subverts the comedy culture and upholds a form of "status quo". The Comedy Womb in the new status quo for new, independent comics getting a feel for the stage and learning how NOT to use the rotating tropes of misogynist defeminizing slurs or using gays/GLBT members as the butt of their jokes. Actually, the one time a comic who came through did have a set that used both these elements repeatedly, the room - PACKED by the way - fell silent with a few laughs here and there. There is nothing like the look of genuine fear and confusion in a comedian's face - especially one who was told how the room "works" and didn't have something else to offer than his set that dragged him down. And, they were seasoned. If you can't read your audience, and you're not prepared with other material, it's not the room. It's you. And that's why we need a place like the womb. Even if they work blue, realllly blue, you work safe. And if that effort is made, then the impact of a funny slur or ping at a stereotype is taken in stride. Because it's not personal, it's material, but material raised up a few levels. Seeing people new to a mike getting to play in front of a FULL ROOM (I cannot stress this amazing fact) and landing either on their ass or their feet or both in their three minutes is breathtaking. It's brave. It's hard. It's intimidating. And it's available to you, if you have been wanting to try stand-up. If this thing extends into writing classes and stage performance (hint hint...I can help!) - oh my GOD it's going to be electric. The room is a perfect size - CRAMMED. People don't get wicked rip-roaring drunk there at the tables - WOW. The audience WANTS TO BE THERE. I have seen repeats in the times I've gone and they bring new people each week. I loved when that would happen to us back in '98. It's run smooth and it's run WELL. Danielle K.L. Grégoire produces this show and she doesn't f*** around. It's a rather well-oiled machine. She handles comics - which is like herding cats on crack - and have never heard her pull gossipy bullshit on people. She's got a very even and fun personality that knows what the stresses of being a stageworker is like and she offers that patience, yet goal of aiming for perfection, with a strong hand. I'm not kidding - I wish I had her loving seriousness and drive when I was performing. Which, well, has changed because of her and two of my friends who "accidentally" put me back on the comedy stage after an 11 year hiatus. Had it been anywhere else, I would not have done it. But being on the stage - which seems too small at first from the seats but is just right while on it - and seeing this amazing producer glowing that someone old-new was up there - caught me entirely off guard. She was HAPPY. Happy to see a fellow woman on stage, a place we struggled and were bumped from and booed from and ignored from for decades. In the milliseconds between seeing her radiance and me cobbling up some old and new stuff broke my fear. Not once on any stage in over seven years of performing have I felt that feeling - the feeling of No Fear. Nervous, unprepared, and just gaining footing and still allowed to have stage time? - THAT is what the Womb provides. You get to find your footing, your voice, and your work. I hope to see you at the Comedy Womb - it deserves an audience for a very long time to come. read more

Descending into The Grotto at the Rendezvous in Belltown is similar to how you might imagine re-entering the womb might be: warm, red, cozy. How appropriate then that every Tuesday night The Grotto is the location of The Comedy Womb, a combination open mic and comedy showcase produced by petite dynamo Danielle K.L. Gregoire. Danielle birthed The Comedy Womb in an attempt at an environment where female comics would feel welcomed to hone their craft rather than marginalized. If you follow the comedy scene at all, you've probably heard the ongoing and often contentious discussion of the challenges faced by female comics, as well as those faced by non-white, non-cis-gendered comics. If you haven't, you can find a multitude of internet articles discussing the validity of "rape jokes," but honestly, you don't want to go down that road. The point is that Danielle has created a safe space for all where rape jokes, the c-word, and other hallmarks of misogyny are banned. All are welcome to perform and bashing of any kind is frowned upon. The Comedy Womb has grown in leaps and bounds over the past year and will be adding a second night each week in April to accommodate the ever-increasing number aspiring comedians. That it's attracted a 90-year-old woman to perform as well as half a dozen newly-hatched comedy chicks each week speaks to its appeal. In addition, Danielle has taken it upon herself to offer bits of performance wisdom and mentoring to many newbie comics and has done the local comedy scene a great service in nurturing some of its fragile souls towards taking greater risks and getting greater laughs. Pretty decent venue, food was typical but good. Got Groupon, unable to make it before it cancelled, they honored it but only for amount paid. Parking at Pioneer Square was challenging, had to park in lot for $10 ($8 plus tax), but only walked across courtyard for entry. Homeless were not an issue. Well lit, plenty of bicycle police, very safe and comfortable. Bathrooms clean, well lit. Had a great time! read more
