Just had my second OTR cocktail cruise (I went last year with a Yelp group), and I'm so glad to…read morehave gone out on the Kismet again! This time two friends and I joined the sunset cruise, and we had only two other people with us on the boat. On the Rocks isn't fancy; it's a laid-back local vibe and a great alternative to a giant party boat. Before boarding you have a choice of beverages you can take along, both alcoholic and non; they put them in a cooler, and off you go! You can bring your own snacks on board if you want to. Tours are an hour and a half and that feels leisurely. The route might vary: last summer we cruised over toward Cape Elizabeth, but this time we wound our way through the islands scattered around the bay: Peaks, Cushing, Long Island, Cliff, and the Diamonds. I loved this route for the the glimpses at the back-island views--and then we sailed back toward the port with a gorgeous sunset lighting the way, lights twinkling on all around. Practicalities: it's a bit hard to find the launch point; there wasn't a sign for OTR and they've moved from where I'd caught it last time. Fortunately the first mate eventually wandered down the pier and found me looking around. If you're driving, give yourself plenty of time to park and walk--Old Port is crazy busy in the summer. Money: any drinks you buy and consume will be charged to the card of whoever made the reservations, so no need to fuss with Venmo on board (I recommend bringing some cash to tip afterward, though). And that's really all you'll need to navigate: once you're on board just relax, settle in, and enjoy being out on the Casco Bay!

For three consecutive…read moreyears, we have traveled 700 miles and gone on Captain John's Island Prince for an evening cruise on our last night in town. Captain John has a route that he follows but is always willing to veer off that path if there's something at sea that might be cool for the passengers to see. Last night, we had the pleasure of seeing minke whales and harbor porpoises. Captain John made followed the path of the whale and slowed down so all could see. I cannot speak highly enough of Captain John's hospitality on his boat and look forward to heading out again next year!

If you take a little detour off the story walk, you'll even find a cool teepee shaped bunch of sticks leaning against a tree. Children love to explore this area. It's not so far off the path that you'd ever get lost. In between the first few pages of the story walk, when you have an opportunity to go straight, do so. I promise it's only a few feet down the path. Can't miss it!

I wasn't expecting so much from this little park right off Route 302 (it's located on a dirt road…read morejust after the Westbrook Pool & Spa; there's a large granite sign at the mouth of the road, and you've probably passed it a million times - I know I have - but once you see it, you'll know exactly where this gem is forever)! Donnabeth Lippman Park - formerly known as Chaffin Pond Preserve - is 123 acre mostly wooded area that surrounds a 10 acre pond that's apparently great for fishing. I came here for a walk in the woods and was delighted to find that there was more than meets the eye: there's a family-friendly (you could easily take a stroller here - it's packed earth and not very root-y), totally accessible to all abilities, story book trail with a giant "Once Upon A Time" sign inviting you into the woods (how magical and fantastical is that?). Once you're finished, you can walk back to the parking lot from here via the yellow trail or you can take that same trail and follow it up alongside the pond, through the woods, then back down around the opposite side of the water (side note: I love loop trails - who wants to double back and see the same things?). A red trail deviates off to Mud Pond, and a green trail just adds an extended path through the forest before reconnecting to yellow. All of it is perfectly marked! It's a wonderful walking trail and if I lived nearby I could see this also being a solid spot for a good run! Admittedly, after heavy rain or during spring you should expect it to be quite muddy. No hunting allowed here, so it's a good spot for year round enjoyment (for those of you who are looking for a new snowshoeing spot!); there's an abundance of picnic tables overlooking the pond, a swing set, a big playground area, and plenty of green space to stretch out on. Again - what an unexpectedly great spot hidden in plain sight!
