Many of her beautiful senior and special needs dogs are rescued on the brink of death from the LA County Shelters. I love volunteering there, seeing the happy new dog parents taking home beautiful senior dogs that have such a love of life and so much UNCONDITIONAL LOVE to give and share. Kristi gives a very thorough tour and drops tons of knowledgeable information on the history of WHAR wolves and also each of the wolves personalities, cnaracteristics, and fun facts. She points out the Alpha (but we all know the real Alpha is her, haha), the Beta, and the rest of the wolves' roles in the pack. The wolves have a generously-sized play time area that they take turns running around in. At the end, Kristi took out the Alpha wolf and we got to interact, pet him, and take pictures with him. Such a truly fascinating animal. You can visit by calling and making an appointment and giving a donation. We did the dusk tour for ~$15 per person, but you also have an option for a feeding tour. These are at set times, as the wolves need to be on a set feeding schedule. Parking was easy and the place is located right next to another zoo animal facility. I would highly recommend anyone who loves animals to check this place out!

Plus socializing with the other dogs on the walks is an added bonus. Natalie also provides the sweetest little update emails every day with tons of adorable pictures. I can tell how much Nora loves it because she gets SO excited to see Natalie and the gang on Wednesdays :) Natalie is fantastic about communication, super organized, and even came over to meet Nora and see how she interacted with other dogs before their first walk together. They wrote in an email to me, "You can't throw a rock without hitting an abandoned dog there." Turing away a qualified, loving home-based, purely on zip code, feels more like discrimination in the responsible rescue work. If the goal is truly to help dogs find a safe, committed home, blanket location restrictions like this are counterproductive. It's disheartening to see dogs kept from good homes over policies that seem inconsistent and poorly thought out. I expect better from an organization that claims to prioritize animal well-being.

Compassion As…read moresomeone who has rescued before and is actively fostering a purebred Australian Shepherd we saved from a high-kill shelter, I reached out to this rescue hoping for guidance and collaboration to help place him in the right long-term home. He had been on the euthanasia list due to illness, and my family and I spent over $3,000 out of pocket to nurse him back to health. We've provided love, care, and structure, and we're continuing to support him while recognizing that--due to his reactivity and my being pregnant--our home isn't the safest long-term fit, especially with a newborn on the way. Instead of being met with support or even understanding, I received a shaming, condescending response that made broad assumptions about our commitment and motivations. Despite stating clearly that I am willing to act as a foster and contribute financially to his continued care, their reply completely disregarded that and suggested I was contributing to the problem. It lacked empathy, nuance, and basic kindness. What's worse is that the tone of their message is exactly the kind that pushes capable, compassionate people away from stepping up to rescue or foster in the first place. It's hard enough navigating complex behavioral needs while doing everything possible to give a dog a second chance--being met with judgment instead of help is unacceptable. I would not recommend working with this organization unless you want to be talked down to for trying to do the right thing. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to our beloved dog, and they treated her with such dignity, love, and respect. Everyone was patient, caring, and took the time to explain everything to us without making us feel rushed. They comforted us throughout the entire process and made an incredibly painful experience a little easier to bear. Unbelievably great service. From our first phone call, of course on a holiday weekend, to meeting…read morethe front staff, and the talented vet techs. EVERYONE was kind, soothing and eager to help. My 11 year old Chihuahua-terrier mix dislocated her hip, she was crying in pain, we were beside ourselves, unable to help her. My husband called around who was open on a holiday weekend, and we found Atascadero Pet Hospital. They immediately invited us in to their beautiful facility and put my baby under anesthesia and put her hip back in place. We took her home in a hip sling, and she did wonderfully. We only had to give her the pain medicine that they sent us home with the first and second night. Today was our follow up and the hip sling is off and now we all have to do is pray that keeping her contained for a few more weeks with careful handling, her hip will heal and not need further surgery. I just can't express how much gratitude I have to these kind people and how wonderfully they treated us. I especially want a shout out to a young man, I think his name is Juan, young man, very handsome and just so in tuned to everything we needed to hear and how to take care of her once we got her home. He went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and assured us that we could call anytime of day or night if something happened that wasn't right or if my pet was in pain. I can't tell you how much this meant to us. Monkey is healing. We are so relieved to know that there are experts out there that will help us and be kind to our animals. Of course, the surgeon and the vets were amazing as well, so thank you to them and thank you for the time that they also spent with us explaining our options. And I just want to add, that those inaccurate reviews of this wonderful facility are likely hyperbole. Being a healthcare provider myself, for humans, I know, you can't make everybody happy. And you can't make miracles happen every time. There are many variables to consider when making a recommendation about options for health, and quality of life. It may not be an easy fix, and it may not be the best for the pet. And sometimes that's hard to hear. And, quite frankly, healthcare even if it's for a pet, is quite expensive. It's part of being a pet owner (or human). I was actually quite amazed that my dog had full-on anesthesia and her hip put back in place and a sling placed for such a reasonable amount. It was even less than they had quoted us and, they didn't ask to do a bunch of bloodwork and everything else ahead of time. They just took her to surgery and put her hip back in. Amazing! I stand behind what I said, these people are very mindful and compassionate in the work they do.
