Wow, what an interesting place! It was so much fun to walk through, although it was VERY COLD!! Brrr!! They have so many pieces of mix matched stuff. Antiques of all kinds, church pews, hot tubs, sinks, windows, fridges, kitchens, chairs, lights, etc. It goes on and on. If you need something for the house it's worth coming to take a look. Not sure about the pricing on everything but it seems there is a lot of history here and a lot of great pieces that could use a second chance. The warehouse itself is amazing. It's really cool seeing all the details and machinery from the past. They have a huge selection of just about everything. You can definitely find some unique finds. With all that said- everything was extremely overpriced. When I think of reselling used items I think of greatly reduced prices. We were looking for a baker's rack/cabinet for our kitchen but everything was just as expensive (if not more expensive) than the new items at furniture stores. Basically, Second Chance has 5 warehouses full of stuff to renovate your house. The 5 warehouses are located within 2 - 3 blocks of one another (don't mind the other crumbling buildings around it!) and is easily walkable. Seriously, the clawfoot selection is amazing. You can also buy mantels, cabinets, doors, appliances, furniture, lamps, radiators (and covers), some antique toys, stained glass ... and the list honestly goes on and on. Most of the stuff is 'architectural salvage' but they also have some consignment stuff and newer stuff. I'm not quite sure how this works, but Second Chance is a non profit organization. 2nd Chance is deconstructing our house. It is a non-profit that offers a job training in housing deconstruction. The homeowner allows 2nd Chance to deconstruct the house and 2nd Chance resells everything that is usable within the house. It then either recycles or disposes of the unsaleable items. As stated by a previous reviewer, 2nd Chance offers these items in 5 warehouses. If you are in the market for appliances, cabinets, hardware or even some furniture, this is an interesting place to visit. You can find anything from an antique armoire to an old freezer door to lights removed from the Philadelphia Civic Center. Wear comfortable clothing as the warehouses are not air conditioned and be prepared to walk through a lot of stuff before finding a hidden gem that might fit your house perfectly. read more

I was really excited to FINALLY get down to Second Chance. I love their mission and what they're doing in the community. Unfortunately, I could not get over how expensive everything was! My boyfriend and I were looking for some kitchen cabinets, and I was surprised at how high the cabinets were priced for the quality. I know the items are reclaimed, but for what they're charging, you would expect them to be cleaned up a little bit (this logic applies to the majority of the items, not just cabinets). We were also in the market for a new sofa, and for what they were charging for a used microfiber sofa with stains was the cost of a brand new one (or a used one in better condition from David's on the Avenue or Craiglist). There were some really cool salvaged antique items that I could never afford, and the trip was worth it just to look at those. Please note that the warehouse isn't heated or air conditioned. We went on a cold day, we were not dressed accordingly, and it was FREEZING! Also, make sure you use the bathroom before you go. The bathroom was an absolute disgrace. Since the inventory is always changing, I do plan on giving Second Chance a second chance (I know - corny). I won't come here for any "basic" household furniture or items, but will return if I'm looking for something special and unique for my home. read more

I'm really surprised by the high ratings for Second Chance. Warehouse #3 was unbelievably overpriced (60s barstools in poor condition for $200?). This place has nothing on Urban Ore in Berkeley, CA. Granted, there were a couple of cool things here, it is really out of reach for most. Warehouse #1 had some neat stuff including a bench from the waiting room at the old Camden Station. However, they were looking to charge nearly $10 for a 12"x 36" piece of ceiling tin that was in horrible condition. Salvaging is good, but how can you when everything is so expensive? read more

This place is a DIYer's dream. Huge. Organized. Well stocked. Very helpful and courteous staff. Dog-friendly. Good prices. It's a GINORMOUS warehouse space, so don't be put off by the cold (in the winter) or the heat (in the summer). Just put on your walking shoes and dress for the weather. Some items are priced in "stages" and reduce in price over time as the item sits unsold. I found that if you ask a sales manager for pricing there is room to negotiate a good price... unless the item is very very new to the floor (understandable). Just check back in at a later date to see if it's still there! Added bonus, if you purchase something large you have 10 days to return and pick up your item. Perfect for that spur of the moment fireplace mantle w/ overhead oak shelving purchase you didn't intend to make, but couldn't pass up! This is now my go-to place for projects and parts to reuse and repurpose. Plus, you can't argue with the message behind Second Chance's philosophy and job training development - Retrain. Reclaim. Didn't plan to pick up tile but the selection was different than what I saw about 2 weeks ago. Clearly new materials every day to choose from and really good prices compared to retailers. I feel good about keeping stuff out of the dump! Met a couple of great employees (kept our distance) and learned more about where everything comes from. Donations (everybody is cleaning out their houses) and Deconstruction (employees learn skills on how to to take apart a house). What they learn are skills they can take to any contractor job. Has anything you could imagine to add character to your home. You won't find most of there products anywhere else. The prices are inexpensive and everything is negotiable. Double check tags because the first price is when it first comes in. A month or so later that price is cut in half. Then after I think 3months or so its cut like another half. If somebody doesn't buy it after a few months you'll get it for next to nothing. You gotta love it! read more

Second Chance isn't so much a store as it is just a collection of ... well, collections. Lots of dealers and people stripping homes put their wares for sale in Second Chance. Parts of the store are nothing but collections of singular items - you can wade through a sea of bathtubs, toilets, washing machines, and so on. They also have one long warehouse full of couches, chairs, doors, light fixtures, and so on. Along the way, you'll find lamps, light switches, doorknobs, and other random housewares. I even found a sealed vinyl record of the most famous 'Meet the Press' interviews. The real treat of Second Chance is just traveling through the warehouses, and seeing if you find anything. The prices are all over the place, and tend to be on the high side for the big items, but it's a place you should see at least once. read more

And they have about 170 of them. Unlike the first reviewer, I have only been in the main two warehouses. But, the selection in those two alone is spectacular. Update: Second Chance will be relocating at the end of January 2012. I honestly can't say enough about how incredible the staff is here. They are some of the friendliest and most helpful people you'll run across. They greet you as you walk in, multiple people on the floor ask you if you need assistance and they genuinely thank you as you leave. Honestly, it doesn't get much better than that. We were on the hunt for tin ceiling tiles and we could have quite possibly looked for hours in their warehouse trying to find it. Instead, a very nice gentleman pointed us in the right direction and started to chat with us about their new location. It'll be interesting to see it all come together because they not only have the sheer quantity of stuff to move but some of the pieces are massive. They have reclaimed stained glass windows, completely assembled sets of kitchen cabinets and counter tops, not to mention built-in bars, fireplace mantels and piles of slate tiles. This time around they had a two-piece cabinet from the set of The Wire. Pretty cool, right? Go here now. Lots and LOTS of stuff here, mostly the higher end architectural salvage variety, but oodles to look thru. It's a giant warehouse setup with neatly (for the most part) laid out sections and wide aisles. More importantly, there are tons of employees wandering around and all of them seem to know their stuff, and are happy to help you find what you're looking for. Of course, it's working for a good cause (which it has explained very nicely in one section of the store) so your money is well spent here. It's also a great place to get inspired, so many weird and wonderful items that might help you finish that DIY of your own. So many ideas floating thru this giant space. Mind you, it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter, so dress accordingly when you visit. Best to come on a cool, overcast day if you want to take your time and really dig down on the cool stuff in this place. Some of the prices are a bit high, but the employees are quick to haggle with you if you're so inclined. We got a kitchen granite countertop set (including the island) for $250, or about half what we would have paid just about anywhere else. Definitely worth the price of admission, which by the way is free. UPDATE: Sorry Second Chance but you're losing a star for the way you dealt with the above mentioned granite purchase when it was time for us to come and pick up all the pieces. I won't get into a long he/said, she/said here about the pricing practices of Second Chance, but suffice to say, make sure that ANY purchases you make with Second Chance are clearly understood by BOTH parties (namely YOU and Second Chance). What are you getting, for how much money? Make them write it down on paper for you if you don't take the item away with you when you buy it. You'll be glad you did. read more

I've been shopping at second chance for years. I've always found it a place to find used furniture and home goods in reasonable condition at fair prices. The past few times I've been in, however, I have been extremely disappointed. The prices have almost tripled over the course of the last year. Prices were never bargain basement, but you always felt like you were getting a fair deal based on the condition of the item. Now, they are pricing almost like a high-end antique shop. Used furniture is a really competitive marketplace and there are a lot of other options. I'm not sure I'll be coming back here anytime soon sadly. read more

Great place to look for things for your house- and to research the history behind them if you're inclined. Second Chance also does such great things for the community, so why not check it out? The only pitfall is that there are some things that seem very over-priced, or that you can definitely find on craigslist for cheaper prices. Really was such a disappointing experience on many levels , lots of interesting stuff but unfortunately no bargains, simply priced too high, note to the managers of second chance you really need to invest in customer service training it really will go a long way , the staff is rude uninterested and not helpful at all. Every one can have a bad day but I have been there three times with the same bad experience with different sales associates . If you really hate your job that much then you should try something different, I think it's a wonderful mission but ya just have to work at it a little better then you are. This place is phenomenal! As a bit of a treasure hunter I was thrilled to have the chance to search through all the bits and pieces. Unfortunately we came almost at closing time and only got to explore one warehouse, but found dozens of items I wanted. I agree with earlier posters that it tends to be a bit on the expensive side, but we found a beautiful overstuffed chair on sale for $25. I'm notoriously an impulse buyer so I really appreciate that they have scheduled price adjustments marked on each of their items. Usually by the month it'll show what the item will cost if it remains in the warehouse. Although there's no telling what will be there in a month. The employees were very helpful. Been here twice in about 2 weeks and absolutely love it. Tons of space and unique pieces to explore. Despite it's size and the amount of inventory, the location is well kept. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Called earlier in the day about a piece and was told it was available, made the trek to the warehouse and it was nowhere to be found, asked for help and ended up meeting the manager who was very apologetic. I wasn't expecting anything from him, but he gifted me a very generous gift card for my troubles. Needless to say I was very impressed at the customer service I received and very happy to have discovered this gem of a place. read more

My big disappointment is in the furniture/antique building. They are smoking crack if they think they can sell most of the furniture for what they're asking. Much of it is damaged and yet the prices are through the roof. They have some great things and a wonderful selection, but they need to come back down to earth and get real. It's a shame for the charitable organization because they really could make more money and turn furniture more readily if they adjusted their prices. You can go down to Hampden and get some great furniture for half the price which is a shame because I hear second chances does some great things for the community and I would love to support them-- I just can't justify the hefty price tags. read more

it's a place that can have something or nothing...have to visit a lot. Prices are on the high side, especially seasonal stuff, the staff never checks competitive pricing from retailers. I love this place and the people that work there, I have bought several things for my home. Yes, some stuff is pricey but then again custom built ,solid wood, kitchen cabinets are pricey brand new. The people that work there take pride in their work and are very nice and helpful. As for being ex cons, as another reviewer said I dont know and dont care. I don't even know where to begin! Second chance is an incredible warehouse filled with giving everything and everyone a second chance. From their motto, to the friendly staff, to their incredible merchandise, I was so pleased by my experience there today! I need to express the kindness in which my husband and I were greeted, by every single sales associate and staff member. Everyone was incredibly patient, knowledgeable about product location or product specs, and thorough! As soon as we finish our move to our new home, we will be back to support second 110%! Between their building materials, to their case goods, from their lighting, to their bathroom vanities, they take good care of the products and everything is very reasonably priced.
