This bookstore is a great stop for an activity to do with your little one, or to pick up a new book for yourself or as a gift. The inside is on the smaller side but they pack in a lot of different books and toys/activity items. They have a nice clean bathroom with a great diaper changing setup. There is comfy seating for the little ones so they can enjoy browsing through books or reading. You can easily spend an hour just inside here between all the book browsing, reading, exploring all the toys. They seem to be very community focused- there is even a community toy exchange bin out front! There are also some tables and seating outside in front of the store to enjoy nice weather. I would highly recommend a visit here with your little one paired with a visit to Stella's across the street for a coffee/beverage! read more

This quaint little bookshop has all the elements of carefully and thoughtfully curated books for every reader. A beautiful setting that makes you want to stay all afternoon. I spoke with the owner and told him I was a preschool teacher and as such, a book snob- his collection for children was impressive and accurately priced. A big selection of new books -- hardcover, paperback, fiction, nonfiction -- but also board books, picture books, baby chewable/indestructible books, some Usborne books as well (including a large selection of That's Not My books). There are also toys, craft kits, and more. Basically a great "one stop shop" for gift giving for your favorite baby or kid or teenager. They also have a small bin of free LGBTQ+ books for youth to take -- and customers can buy one to donate to the free bin if they would like. read more

LOVE this bookstore. They have such a great selection of children's books and toys. My little guy loves going there and checking out the toy section and occasionally will sit down for their story time. He was a hoot, truly. 2nd Star gives us all a chance to revisit childhood favorites and to discover new outstanding editions! Stumbled upon this gem last weekend when my sister was in town to see my 5 week old son. The book selection is amazing! And the staff are quite knowledgeable and very friendly. While there, my son decided he was hungry (screaming baby, quiet bookstore, you get the picture). The staff were so kind to let me nurse in a quiet place. Love this place. The staff is always SO patient with my toddler sister who can not get ENOUGH stimulation from the books choices and toys. It's like an ADHD fest when I take my sister in there and it's amazing to watch how Second Star helps me in these situations rather than scowls at the three year old who just can NOT get enough enjoyment out of this place (seriously, we've spent hours here). It's a very neat spot, very comfortable, and the outside patio for storytime is just adorable. The owner is an amazing woman and I hope to watch this place boom. This little gem is amazing! I took my little guy in for some fun and the owner was so hands on! I was offered tea or coffee when I walked in and greeting right away! My son loves to read and it wasn't long before the owner took him by his hand and read books to him while I enjoyed my tea and browsed the books. He handed her a lot of books and she happily read them! That is so amazing! I will be coming back here often as they have story time and love pouring in to kiddos. It seems so much more personal than a traditional library story time with much more one on one involvement. read more

What an adorable place. I like to support small, independent businesses. I needed a birthday gift for a four-year old and this was just the right place. The place feels almost like a little home full of books. They have a great selection for such a small place and the people are very helpful. They actually know their merchandise and audience. They made recommendations and also helped me find an old favorite that I wanted to pass along. In addition to children's books, they stock a room full of parenting books. Wow! What an awesome children's bookstore! My two boys absolutely love this place. We live in the Highlands-Berkeley Neighborhood & frequent Tennyson often on our bikes/scooters... We are always stopping by Second Star to the Right. They have an incredible staff that work very hard keeping the books in order & placed perfectly for children of all ages to pick up and read. We have attended story time which is offered often. On our last trip we noticed they now sell educational based, cool, fun exciting Toys all wrapped into one. If your ever on Tennyson with your kids, Second Star to the right is a must see! Our family loves this place!! read more

One of the best children's book stores I have experienced. Incredible selection that is organized by theme in the best way. My favorite was the up front "You go girl!" area of empowering female-focused books for all ages and types. The staff was incredibly helpful on books and also offered us beverages, to go if we wanted! Amazing play area in the back. The best bonus of all as a mom of a 10mth old, was the bathroom tricked out like your own at home. Comfy padded real changing table, training seats and extra supplies. So great. This book store is amazing! My friend had his book launch here for Angel Academy, and the staff are wonderful. So much care has been taken with the appearance of the store. They even have an awesome little reading nook with a beanbag chair and fun push lights on the ceiling for kids. I had so much fun looking at their selection, which is top notch. This place is a real gem tucked away in an adorable house on Tennyson. My daughter (20 months old) and I spent a good hour there today exploring, reading, and generally hanging out in this cozy space and chatting with the staff. The selection is fantastic- old favorites that you had as a kid mixed in with contemporary and interesting new kids books. Oh- and some great deals on used books (immaculate condition only) spattered throughout the shelves too. The best part really is the vibe in the place though-- which is probably 5% the colorful and cozy environment and 95% the owners and staff who are so engaged with their littlest customers (and their parents). This place would be worth a trip across town to visit-- I feel fortunate it isn't too far from me. read more
