    Honey Beary smoothie from JuiceLand

I booked the Secret Food Tour in Austin directly with Secret Food Tours for March 25, 2024 at 1:00 pm. I got the upgraded drinks package to my ticket. My husband and I went to the meeting spot at the Ellis cocktail bar - 111 Congress Ave and met our guide, AJ. AJ checked us in on his phone and we waited for a few minutes prior to our tour starting. AJ welcomed us and asked everyone to introduce ourselves. We headed to our first stop, Veracruz All Natural at 111 E Cesar Chavez St, for breakfast tacos. Our group grabbed tables and AJ bought the food to us. The breakfast taco was delicious and the sangria was really good as well. AJ provided a brief background about the Vazquez sisters journey from a local staple food truck to a brick and mortar. Then, we headed to Fareground At One Eleven which is downtown Austin's beautifully modern food hall. We had a reuben slider from JewBoy Sliders. OMGSH so good! AJ informed us that we were lucky to try JewBoy Sliders before they closed their Fareground location but have another location in Austin. We walked around and stopped at the tallest artwork in Austin and took a group picture. Next culinary stop was JuiceLand. We all got the Honey Beary smoothie and played a game of guessing what the components were. After, we stopped at Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que at 217 Congress Ave to get pit-style BBQ brisket, pinto beans, and a cider. Our group sat upstairs and were the only ones there. For our last stop, we went back to Fareground At One Eleven while AJ picked up food from ZIKI (a favorite Greek + Mexican Food Truck) and bought dessert to us from another vendor at Fareground. Before we departed each other, we went around the table saying what our favorite dish was. All the food AJ bought us was mouthwatering, delicious, and succulent. I was completely stuffed by the time we finished this tour. During the tour, AJ provided history and recommendations for things to do in Austin. Each establishment had water and restrooms. He was very sociable and I enjoyed this tour a lot. Tips for guides were not included in the ticket price so we gave him a tip at the end. I highly recommend the Secret Food Tour in Austin for the food choices, information, and a wonderful experience. The other people on the tour were really friendly too and it felt like we were a family at the end.

I booked a food tour online for the date of October 9th, 2021 on line. I booked this tour for a friend as I as part of their birthday gift. This walking food tour took those in attendance to various restaurants in downtown ATX to sample one menu item from each location. The tour I was a part of included the tasting at the following establishments: Velvet Taco, DeSano Pizzeria Napoletana, Gloria's Latin Cuisine, Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que, Juice Land, and Taco Deli. During this walking tour, each establishment's history was discussed to provide tour goers with a bit of background about the establishment and what inspired the food and vibe. This information proved to be informational for non-local tour participants. I will admit I wasn't as impressed with the information given on the tour as I am not a tourist. For those who come from our of town, this tour is worth a try. Hopefully, their tours wills start on time as our tour started about twenty minutes late.

Our second stop was at Cooper's Barbecue, where we got to enjoy amazing brisket along with beans and sweet tea.

Scrambling at the very last minute, I scoured Trip Advisor for a similar experience, and found Austin Detours. The tour was about to start, so I ran (yes, ran) through the 90+ degree Texas heat to arrive on time. My guide, David, was incredible, very interesting to listen to, and took us all around Austin. I really felt like I attained a better understanding for the city. He even took our picture at different spots, and the sweet treat was delightful. The only thing I didn't love was that the elder couple on the tour with me rambled about their political leanings, which I didn't agree with at all and I struggled to keep my mouth shut, but David did such a good job of delicately leading them off the topic on multiple occasions. Their tour is super reasonably priced, a value, really. I'd recommend them to anyone visiting Austin for the first time.

Why in the hell do people not tip tour guides? I can see if they suck, or the trip sucked... but neither of these things were true about this trip. Shame on all of the tight people who were in this trip with us. And shame on you if you can't give a few bucks to your tour guide! (End bitch session) As most tours, what can make or break a tour is the guide. In this case, ours was great! I apologize that I can remember her name, but I did attach a picture. So if you get her, you'll be entertained, informed and happy when the tour is finished! On our vacation we also did a similar (but larger) trip in San Antonio, and this one (Austin) was way better. I'm sure the City of Austin would say it's because Austin is more interesting, which may be true! But I'll say the small group and fun guide made this the winner.

We have learned that taking the VIP bus is more our speed. We can have a drink on the bus and the group is usually pretty cool. They are so organized. We arrive at the pickup spot, check in, have a drink and it's all done seamlessly. Hannah was a great bus host. She's spot on keeping us informed where we are and what to do when we arrive. She goes over rules and policies related to being on the river and trespassing rules. They always do a great job and I'll be doing it again next year.

We followed all of the instructions, including being ready to check in at 10:30 at BBG's. A group of about 10 of us stayed there until 12pm and called it. Absolutely ridiculous. Multiple phone calls to the tour company with no response. I hate to leave bad reviews but this was so disappointing. We really were looking forward to this, and specifically came to Austin for tubing (versus the other idea for a trip we had which was the beach. In hindsight, we should've flown to California instead. No one would be able to forget us that way.) Other companies had their groups successfully picked up and whisked away by their tour vans. (austin detours was one). We flew here and bought a 12 pack for 2 of us and ended up lugging around cans of beer through downtown Austin for no reason. If our trip was a little bit longer this might be less disappointing. However, I couldn't recommend this company. Unless you wanted to wait an hour for zero reason at all. At least if I booked Austin detours I'd be on the river. It just makes me so sad thinking about the multiple groups of us sitting around at that bar waiting for essentially no reason and no communication. Do not. Book. The river raft.

Drove around for far longer than I wanted to admit, and ended up parking up on 10th street. No problem, the weather was chilly, but nice in the sun, and much to see during the walk down to Van Zandt. Got there a bit early, so we explored Rainy Street as well. I must say, Rainy definitely got my appetite going! Check-in was simple: you walk into the hotel, get scanned in, get a wrist band and bag, join the line, and once 3:00 hits, up the stairs you go. There's no map nor instructions; you really just walk around and choose how you want to experience the event. My take on the experience overall was that it was simply controlled chaos. It was a dense crowd, and a lot of shoulder rubbing, but everyone there was super nice and really just there for a good time. And good times were had. 16 competing chefs, plus drink and cheese stations galore! The food was excellent and our favorites included the dishes from Banger's, Black's, and Juliet. And although not part of the competition, Contigo's smoked leg of lamb was so good, and deserved votes as well! As for the drinks, we loved the gin and tonic from Roxor. We also managed to get to the front of the pack to watch the butcher demo from Salty Sow's Chef Marmulstein. He definitely knows his stuff and gave a captivating presentation. In the end, my stomach was near exploding and pretty much had to skip dinner. The event was super fun, so very Austin, and highly recommended! Some tips for next time. Don't rush! None of the stations ran out of food. Also if you're here with a friend, maybe share the first round of samples and go for seconds at the ones you liked the most. That way, you get to sample more non-lamb dishes and won't walk out two pounds heavier.
