I love Hyatt properties, but more specifically the Thompson Hotel. Out of all the hotels to choose from in the area, this is the one. It gives dark, sleek, sexy boutique vibes. I love the coffee shop connected to it, it's just as chic and perfect to hideaway. The one caveat is if you're looking for something relaxing, you might want to skip on this one. From the rooftop alone, you can hear the sounds of the street and nightlife. read more

Yes terrible front desk service. Great location, great interior, and awesome dining options. BUT the service level of the front desk is definitely below standards for a 4-star hotel. Not only do they have an attitude when answering questions, but when I requested the staff to help me print something, she asked me to send it to the email but then made me stood in front of her and waited for five minutes while she worked on her other tasks, which she didn't communicate to me (?) then when she was done she finally stopped typing and asked me if my email address was xyz and got the files printed in 3 seconds. Bizarre experience. If it takes 3 seconds maybe just could you please sort that first? Or at least communicate that the guest would have to wait for a bit and kindly ask them to take a seat while waiting? ?? read more

VALET WARNING. Getting to the hotel was hellish (Friday around 5 pm), with blocked lanes causing gridlock in the tight streets. After one failed attempt to get over and another trying to avoid causing gridlock, I had to circle the block a few times before finally diving into a lane and dumping my contents five car lengths from the entrance. Worse, the wait for our car was 45 minutes (they'll tell you 20), which would have been disastrous if we were trying to catch a flight. And it's $60 for the pleasure. With that out of the way, I can focus on the hotel, good and bad, in no order: Free margaritas at check-in (they figure you'll need one after the sliding tile puzzle of cars out front). Although I heard music coming from my A/C vent at 11 pm (is that what they mean by COOL jazz?), a call to the front desk got it taken care of thanks to quiet hours. Friendly workers and fast elevators. While the room was smallish, the bed was comfortable. It was clean and they provided free earplugs. Note: There is no room in the fridge for leftovers, and it has one of those barn door bathroom doors. The overhead rain shower is tall, but the water pressure is gravity. On the plus side, the soap selection lathered well and smelled great. There is a weird, skinny, three foot pool. On the upside, there are great Amex hookups. Good dining choices, including an attractive Mexican lounge (Arriba) with the best guac I've had in years. Great location (11 minute walk to the bats). They have what people are calling a "gym", whatever that is. The vibe was a little more Carnival Cruise than Viking, since there's the Thompson, the more budget friendly Tommy, and the discount T-Boz. read more

WOW one of my favorite hotels I visited for SXSW. The lobby has a very cool dark industrial feel and everyone that worked here was so nice. I only attended one session in this hotel, but it stood out from the others. In between sessions they had coffee, waters, sparkling waters, etc. in between the meeting rooms. I have since been back for Arriba Abajo on the rooftop. I have never stayed in this hotel, but would love to do a staycation here. read more

This is a well appointed hotel with very comfy (if soft beds) that feel like they envelop you. Large tvs that play cable or Chromecast. Minibar and fridge (partially full of drinks). Great rooftop bar and pool area. Rooms are spacious and bathrooms are big although I didn't like the open space from the toilet. Has robes and slippers and decent shampoo/ body wash. Cooling and heating work well. They offered water or a margarita at check in. The biggest downside is the noise. I could hear someone crying downstairs below my room. I heard every conversation in the hallway. Because it is downtown Austin, music floats up, even to the 11th floor. I heard the people above me dropping things. Fortunately they do provide earplugs. But that alone makes it lose a star. I was awoken at 1 am by a thoughtlessly loud group of people going down the hall. Otherwise service was solid. read more

We only stayed for one Saturday night, but we enjoyed our time at the Thompson. It's very chic and the service checking in was swift and we had a complimentary overnight valet, but I heard it's around $60 for the night. The room was very clean and we slept really well on the comfy king bed. Our room was next to the elevators and we never heard them. We didn't hear a lot of street noise either and had a nice view of downtown. If you valet, I highly recommend texting them 20 minutes ahead of needing your car. We asked for it during typical checkout time and it took about 30 minutes. They have a restaurant and coffee shop, but it was closed while we were there for a wedding. We didn't mind because we weren't planning on using it anyway. Their pool is smaller but nice. It opens early and the sun hits it about mid morning. read more

Really like the property and she excellent service...but it's different!!! There are actually 3 different proposes in the building: Thompson (Hyatt), Tommie (Marriott), and private residences. When you get to the hotel floors you have to go the "right" way (it's easy and clearly labeled) but weird. I was in town on a Tuesday night, but heard talk at the (shared) pool that it's hard to get a seat on the weekend (it's pretty small). The gym is awesome!! Big space and pelotons, tread mills and ellipticals and plenty of free weights. It's an excellent facility. Also really enjoyed the restaurant on the 4th floor (excellent food and margs) and especially the room service breakfast (wow are the pancakes GREaT). I think it's every bit as good as the JW and Austin Proper (also a Marriott). Winner read more

This unique hotel is in located in the right place in Austin. It's unique, vibrant, and warm! I actually got a room right by the elevators and I didn't hear a thing all night which was shocking to me. The room are very nice for one person or a family. The View is decent but nothing special. I also liked the restaurants and bars it reminded me of a resort in Cancun. I would love to come back to this place again. Everything here is fabulous! read more

My friend and I ended up at the Thompson after being displaced from our original hotel, the Hyatt Regency across the river, after arriving and being told they had no water or estimated restoration time. Side note: this was a tough day for staff at both hotels and they all handled it with grace and a positive attitude! Totally not their fault. However, there are some points worth mentioning. We specifically selected the Hyatt for the location and self park option. Thompson is valet only which is a) expensive and b) disastrous. The valet workers did the best they could, truthfully. I just don't think there's enough space for the demand, plus all of the patrons that were sent there from the sister location. Our car keys were misplaced multiple times and we waited 30 minutes twice for our car. It wouldn't have been a big deal except my friend was in town for work and was late to business meetings, even though she planned with plenty of time to retrieve car/travel. The bottleneck that happens in front of the hotel is also honestly a safety hazard. Hotel- there's two sides of the hotel. The Thompson and the Tommie. Do not stay in the Tommie if you want a spacious room. They're tiny and not very logistical. We were put in the Thompson (gratefully). It is significantly more expensive than the Hyatt. They promised it would be the same exact price, but upon checkout we found out otherwise. *we have been promised that this will be fixed so I'm not going to address that at this time. Rooms- beautiful! Quaint, clean. The bathrooms are odd. There's no shower or bathroom door? And the lighting is tough to figure out. Everything is fully stocked (for a price!) and they've thought of everything for convenience if you're willing to pay! Location- perfect! Truly right where you want to be in the city. 6th is a block away and it's walking distance to most everything. Fitness Center - large! Lots of options. Even a Tee Room for golf simulation! So cool! Pool- gorgeous! The pool deck is beautiful. It is NOT heated (Hyatt said it was). On site dining/bars-4 options. Diner bar, Grey Market, Coffee bar, and Arriba Arajo. Only had a drink from AA, it's by the pool and gorgeous! My drink was good, (Blood Orange mule), my friend did not enjoy hers. Food looked good but perhaps a tad overpriced. I would stay here again if I didn't have a car to contend with and wasn't paying for it. It really is a beautiful hotel in a great location, but I'd be curious to see how other hotels nearby stack up. 6.5-7/10 read more

By Far... WORST customer service ever! I'll tell you the 7-Eleven across the street has better customer service, the "barista" at their coffee shop might do you the favor of making a coffee while asking for a 50%tip, at the bar, the bar tender will let you simmer for 15 minutes before making eye Contact and this is for a $25 drink with it's proper $6 tip as well. You could be sitting at the pool for one hour before seeing a waiter and good luck getting your order in. I did ask for a late checkout through their txt system, of course no answer ever, then when i called... they gave me the "option" of paying $30 extra to allow me to stay all the way until NOON! Ridiculous!!! Car valet? 20 minutes to retrieve your car while charging an extraordinary $60 plus tax (and tips) Every time I passed by the front desk, it was me who greeted them. It seems to me there is a culture of mistreating the clients here, as if we'd appreciate the attitude. I did not, and neither will you. I hosted an event for my Shark Tank friends here, and we had an absolute blast! The Thompson and Tommie are in the same building just separated by an elevator, so you can book according to your budget. We booked the tee box for networking and games upon arrival. It's on the third floor in the weight room. The following day we rented to the cabanas at the pool and had the perfect view of the frost tower. We were served pool side drinks from Arriba Bajo by Tristan, who we loved! We had dinner at Arriba Bajo following the pool and the food was fantastic. We would go to the bars downstairs on 6th street for live music. Thank y'all for a great stay! We will be back! read more

"I'll be back" ! I was so pleased with the location of this hotel. It's a dual hotel in one which is super cute. To the left is the Thompson to the right is the tommee. The hotels suite is AMAZING. They also have 3 spots to eat. The RR something for happy hour on the first floor ! Amazing oysters on sight and happy hour! The diner for breakfast and arriba abajo rooftop. This hotel is a 10/10 for me. I love boutique style hotels and I've added this particular one to the top of my list. read more

The Thompson in Austin was amazing! From the moment we arrived, the valet and bellman promptly greeted us and assisted with our bags. The front desk staff, room service, and restaurant team were all exceptionally friendly and helpful. Every need was anticipated before we even had to ask. #500th Yelp Review for 5 years. Spent the day at this amazing hotel and would highly recommend for their 4th floor pool that opens early. I went at 8:30 am to get some rest and relaxation after a terrible experience at the Westin Austin Downtown the night before.The Thompson Austin looks and smells new.It had a totally different vibe and for about $100 more for a room you can stay here. It was a much younger crowd.Not sure why but maybe that's who they cater to. The weather was absolutely perfect in the morning and the cabanas are available on first come first serve at no charge if you are a guest.They even have a retractable shade in case you want less sun. Their long pool was a generous size for swimming and was heated to a perfect temp. Past the pool they had additional seating and other areas to eat that were both stylish and comfortable. Whoever was their designer for this location has some serious style. They even had several games to pass the time and that was helpful as I was waiting for my fellow YELPER to finish his work in Austin. Inside the area that leads to the pool they had a full service upscale bar with bartenders that actually know how to make custom drinks that look and taste delicious. They had a room with a pooltable that allowed me to hone my fierce pool skills with great poolsticks and even 2 table shuffleboard tables set up as entered the bar dining area. Numerous people came up to ask if I needed anything . That is incredible customer service that I don't always expect but have to mention when it is exemplary!! Would highly recommend checking them out .They are a little higher than most in the area but probaly worth a try!! read more

Stayed at Thompson for a week since I was in town for a work week. Super nice hotel. I got a king bed room that was facing 6th street. Was pretty spacious, clean, and nice! The staff was really kind and helpful. During check in they gave me a guitar pick that i could exchange at the bar on the 4th floor for a frozen margarita. No self parking, only valet. $60 a night. You can text to request your car so that was cool. My car was ready in 7-12 minutes each day. The location was great since it was walking distance to everything in downtown. They also have a coffee bar, a diner and wax myrtle restaurant in the hotel so lots of options if you dont want to leave. The gym and pool were also really nice. When I was checking out they had samples at the lobby of this rum cocktail that was tasty! Enjoyed my stay here and would stay here again! read more

The vallet process to this hotel makes me never want to book this hotel ever again. Everyone waiting around for over 30-40 min for their car, almost double what the ticket tells you. I booked an advance for an appointment to be on time too and still was late and had to cancel. Had to ask for a refund for the vallet because i was so frustrated, especially since they make you pay a $60 per night fee. The shower handle is in fact broken you have to almost break a nail to get it to turn on, and the water comes on leaking every now and then. It's also true if you're above the pool you'll hear music from the pool all night even when they're closed. The diner food tastes good, but the service is so bad i had to wave a waiter down multiple times to even get some water. For the price, and the room you can get a much nicer one, and one with better practices in place that doesn't make your trip go bad because of the negligence of the vallet, and the service. read more

Edit. Just tried to shower and the shower is broken. Ignored by the valet because I am not a white man in a cowboy hat in a Cadillac or in a Tesla. Ignored at check in lobby by the "I'm sorry I'm Irish" deskman *he said that he was Irish I don't know why that should make me feel better? when your staff is profiling and helping people that have been patiently waiting to get in to their rooms after not having power, hot water, or food do to a winter storm is extremely poor taste. I'm not happy about my service here so far and I've been at the hotel 1 1/2 hours just to get to my room. read more

This is a magnificent hotel. Its a beautiful modern urban looking hotel. Staff was friendly & welcoming as soon as we got in. The room has a nice layout and the bed was very confortable, no complaints at all. The gym is very spacious and has everything you need. Valet staff was very friendly and even helped us retrieve an item from our car without hesitation. I liked that every time you leave and return, and often open the door for you. One downside is that you can hear into the hallway and you can sometimes hear the room next door. Even with this , we would recommend the Thompson and we will be staying here again read more

Amazing as always, as all of The Thompson properties Hyatt owns/manages are. An absolute savior for us after a harrowing experience at The Loren at Lady Bird Lake and Nido. Joking, but seriously, this place saved our mini-getaway staycation and turned my frown upside down. The hotel itself is beautifully designed, centrally located, easily accessible and has the consistency you come to expect from a larger provider. The in-house dining in phenomenal and we found little reason beyond BBQ needs to leave the hotel. They're opening (may be open now) a cantina on the roof near the pool and it looks absolutely amazing; we spoke with some of the staff and it sounds like a fantastic addition we can't wait to experience during our next stay. Pro-Tip: If it hasn't opened yet (and even if it has), grab yourself some 'seat time' in one of the many unique seating areas next to the rooftop pool and to be cantina. It was a great time and super relaxing to take in the sun in such a beautiful atmosphere. read more

We really enjoyed our stay at the Thompson Austin. Our suite had was decorated in a retro chic fashion and we loved it. The shower was huge and equipped with a rainforest shower head and a regular shower head. The bed was super comfortable and the pillows were perfect! Not only that, the breakfast at the Diner Bar was fabulous! Everything we ate was wonderful. The best thing is the whole place is dog friendly! The location is great too as long as you don't mind dirty 6th. The noise didn't keep us up and we were in close proximity to a lot of fun options for dinner and drinks. Considering this is a brand new hotel, it's price point and rating I expected much more from this hotel. Based on my experience this hotel is decent. I used a Hyatt rewards certificate for a complimentary stay; had I paid the $600/night rate plus $50 valet, this would likely be a one star review. Upon arrival, valet was easy to get to but the valets were slow to assist. Check-in was easy but none of the 3 front desk agents greeted me as I approached. Our room was nice but was a standard size and other than the modern decor, nothing I experienced justified the nightly rate they were charging. We were "upgraded" to a city view but that meant an 11th floor room overlooking 6th Street; which meant bar noise until 2AM. The cleanliness of the bathroom is questionable as the toilet was leaking on the floor, lotion had been used and the cotton ball packaging was already open. The highlights of my stay were that the bed was clean and comfortable, the shower had hot water with good pressure and room service was fast and food tasty; I recommend the coconut oats for breakfast. Checkout was easy and the valet was quick to retrieve my vehicle. If this hotel is the location you need, I'd suggest booking The Tommie Hotel, which is a shared building sister property and charging half the price. You'll get all the amenities and the only difference I could tell is which way you walk off the elevator. read more

Very cozy yet upscale stay in the heart of downtown. The service was extraordinary and were even upgraded for free to an upper level room with a beautiful view of the city to wake up to and delicious macaroons and fresh fruit. The bed was super comfortable and the rainfall shower was really relaxing. Room service was right on time and was yummy. Who doesn't love breakfast in bed? Stayed here for 2 nights. To sum it up if you don't have time to read the whole thing - this hotel could be five stars, but there are some misses that keep it from reaching that level. First and foremost - if you plan on spending any time in your room, do NOT stay on the Tommie side. I was in Thompson, so most of the review will be about that, but I had colleagues in Tommie and there is pretty much nowhere to move in the room, no place to work (unless you count the metal counter behind the sink), and a "bathroom" that is so small the toilet is almost in the shower. Back to my stay. I was in the Residence which is huge and lovely and the bed was very comfortable. I also give a 4.5 stars for female traveler friendliness, as there is a makeup mirror, a steamer, and a great hairdryer. But in some ways it is style over substance, like the following: - lots of closets, but all of them are split in half horizontally so there's nowhere to hang a dress without the skirt hitting the divider and wrinkling. Why not have one full-sized closet? - there's no storage in the bathroom so if you forget to find a towel before your shower, you have to track wet into the living area to get one. Why? - there is a lovely Nespresso maker but no stirrers provided to mix in the provided milk and sugar. - the shower has no lights so it is super dark. That's weird and unnecessary. In fact, the whole color scheme is black and there isn't really enough light anywhere. Another example of close but just missing is the gym. It is massive and well stocked and has Pelotons. But both of the Pelotons were broken - one you couldn't adjust the seat height and the other had a broken water holder and you couldn't move the seat forward. And for all the stuff at the gym they have no foam rollers that I could find, which to me is a staple if you're going to have a big gym. Finally be wary of the elevators. At certain times of day, it takes forever for one to come which can be super annoying. And when they do come, you're standing shoulder to shoulder. read more

Can't speak for the Tommie side but I wouldn't hesitate to stay in the Thompson side again. Everything was clean, they give out champagne in the lobby in the afternoon and the coffee shops & restaurants attached are pretty solid. Also the gym is perfect, it has everything you need and more. The Thompson hotel appears nice and Wax Myrtle's is amazing but this three star rating is 100% for the poor directions and signage for valet. I had to contact them to learn that the valet requires making an illegal right on one way San Jacinto from under construction 5th street that is one lane and eventually just ends because of construction and then having to maneuver a U turn to get to the Valet stand. It was very frustrating. The illegal turn was only made possible by the weekly closing of dirty 6th so I can't speak to what the experience is like not on a Saturday. The valet guys, although nice, didn't greet us at the car because assumed I was an Uber, then he proceeded to drop my key on the concrete in front of me while giving my ticket. The ticket having the QR code to retrieve your car and pay was convenient and the driver that brought my car was extremely nice and patient while I was trying to get his Venmo/CashApp for tip. read more

This was my second staycation at Thompson this year and we loved each visit. The staff has always been very professional and on point and this time was no exception. Prior to our visit, we called with a few requests and France made sure we were accommodated, so when we checked in it was easy breezy. We stayed during Christmas and the the lobby was decorated very nice. Besides the Christmas decor, the Thompson lobby is one of my favorites. It is very modern, plush and comfortable. The check-in desk is a work of art within itself. When checking in please make sure you confirm which color carpet will lead you to your room. The black carpet is for Thompson and the red carpet is for Tommie. The rooms are very relaxing with a sexy combo of forest green and black. The only two downfalls is that the walls are quite thin, so we had to turn our tv up to block out the noise of the tv next door and they do not have a fan in the toilet portion of the bathroom. Even though I have stayed twice, I still have not had the pleasure of checking out the pool area, but I plan to make it happen this summer. read more

Location don't get no better!! Everything is super hip and everyone is super friendly. But I'm so annoyed by this new trend in hotel design. Are they designed by men? Why are the bathrooms so dark? How is anyone doing their make up in the dark? Plus, when did we stop putting doors on water closets? I really want the place where people defecated separated, by a door either pocket or traditional, from where I brush my teeth. Why are the showers all rain nozzles? As a woman, you don't wash your hair every day and it makes it impossible to shower without fully getting wet. Again, I'm sick of the patriarchy dictating everything, including the way I shower. All said, It's solid and you get Hyatt points. So I would definitely recommend it. The housekeeping service was just OK but definitely one of the coolest spots in Austin and close to anything you'd want to see or taste as a tourist. read more

Beautiful room on the Thompson side, and excellent location across from Eddie V's...However: 1. Room service is slow and they are understaffed. Follow through though after an hour and a half was that they were going to call me back, and they never did. Then, the oatmeal was delivered with no utensils...and completely cold. 2. Plates and towels were left in the rain by the pool overnight... which was the view from my room. 3. There are no safes in the room. 4. I left Austin two days ago, and though the hotel said they were going to follow up with me on it, after recognizing in the security report to my room, that someone had tried to access my room with a cell phone key....just tried to call in for an update. "No one is able to take your call right now" was the recording and the service hung up the line. 5. Coffee shop ran out of coffee, and everyone was standing and waiting for 20 mins. I was without power for three days here in Austin. My trees and my neighborhood suffered significant damage due to the ice storms here. Day 1 without power wasn't so bad, but when temps got below freezing, I knew I had to relocate. I have two fragile cats and one anxious dog. Finding a hotel to take us all was going to be a challenge. Thanks to @thompson_atx, I found a home for a few days that kept us warm and cozy. I will forever be a fan of @thompson_atx for their hospitality. So many Austinites were there with their animals just trying to ride it out. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. Terrible service. No one answers in room dining at 7 am (breakfast time). No one answered at dinner the evening before. 6:30 pm. The app doesn't work. The decor is mid the shower design is awful. So as a person who come to Austin often I would never pay to stay here. And though I used American Express points I won't ever waste those here either. Stay at the Driscoll. Or the ATT conference center. It the Stephen F Austin. Or Hotel Za Za. All have better services. Two have excellent bars and are in same location area if this is the area you are coming too. I stayed at Thompson for almost a week and I can assure you this was one of the best ever experiences I've ever had. The place, room, customer service, people, staff... everything is top notch. I was traveling with my wife and a toddler. The staff is so darn polite and courteous that it just felt like home. This is the kind of customer service level that make them the very best in business. We initially planned to stay here for two days but ended up spending whole week in the same room as we loved it so much.
