I'm not sure how they are with hair-care or as a thrift store as I didn't stick around long enough to see. I came here looking to add another wig to my collection and found the store as a place to get wigs on google. The selection of wigs seemed good enough, but I felt very unwelcome by the staff. Like I was a nusciance rather than a paying customer. I believe they do fittings so if you don't know how to fit the wig or how to style it this might be a good place to try, I don't think I'll be returning though. read more

My 82 year old friend went there. Long story short They treated her awful after making four round trips and spending $561.00 she at the end of dealing with employees who were suppose to be fully trained and qualified in dealing with everything wigs. She was finally on the 4th trip sent home with a second wig that was too large as was the first one. The second wig was a reorder of the first one that need to be sized by a seamstress in waynesville and had to pay $30.00 for that. There's more to this debacle... Stay away from this place there are other wig places in asheville. I called The "Duchess" to find out here side of the story. She said: "because of all the cost and experience that happened with my friend she "The Duchess" had out of pocket expenses. I say if the fully trained staff at "Secrets of a Dutchess" they wouldn't have sent my 82 year old friend home with and ill fitting wig. by the way she was sent home with no info on taking care of her purchase. I am a breast cancer patient and was referred to this shop, and to Scott in particular, by a friend who is also battling the disease. Initially, I thought I would "wing it" through treatment with hats and caps and forego buying a wig. It is, after all, summertime and I figured a wig would be hot. Over the first couple of months of treatment, I grew to hate the way I looked--so I went with a friend on a Saturday and consulted with Scott. It was a wonderful experience: He was fun to work with, kind, compassionate and hugely flamboyant, which I found endearing. I settled on a wig, that had no price tag on it--but which he said was $269. He said he would order it on Monday, and I should have it by that Friday or Saturday. That weekend came and went, and I did not hear from Scott. I didn't call, because I didn't want to be a pest. On Monday or Tuesday of the following week I called him to inquire, and his TONE was rude and unfriendly. He acted like he didn't even know who I was. But he made me feel he was too busy to bother. Then he said he would "check on it" and call me back, which he did. Still, his tone was cold and rude -- like he didn't have time for interruptions, which he made me feel that my call was. Yesterday, I received a call from the shop's owner while I was driving--a very friendly call--stating that my wig had come in. I told her I would call later to make an appointment to pick it up. When I called, I asked to speak to Scott. Once again, the rude and unfriendly Scott "showed up." He hurried me through the call, saying I could either come in in an hour OR wait till after the 4th of July. I chose an appointment after the holiday. After thinking about everything overnight, I decided to cancel my wig order with Secret of a Duchess and purchase it somewhere else. I have worked in sales and customer service all my life, and I like doing business with people who are interested in more than just making a sale. It is so much more satisfying to BUILD RELATIONSHIPS than to simply negotiate a one-time transaction. And life is too short to deal with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! UPDATE: I emailed Judi who owns Secrets of a Duchess to let her know how unhappy and disappointed I was with the way I was treated by Scott. She offered to come in on a Sunday, her day off, to see what she could do to "make things right with me." I met her at the store, and she spent over an hour with me trying on both the wig I had ordered and several others she thought I might like. She was very gracious, hospitable and helpful. In the end I chose a different wig, and she gave me a significant discount to make up for my bad experience. She was so kind and delightful to work with, she more than made up for my horrible experience with Scott. If you are looking for a wig, a highly recommend you appoint with Judi herself. She will treat you right and make the experience fun and fabulous. You will be walking on a cloud when you leave her shop. Thank you, Judi! You restored my faith in people! read more

Adorable wig & salon shop that treats their breast cancer customers with great care. From the moment you walk in the door you are greeted with so much love and laughter. Things money can't buy. If you are facing chemo or hair loss go see these folks. They will find you a style. They will entertain you with their humor and you will be so glad that you stopped in. The British lady who owns it is so elegant, kind and charming and knows her wigs. The talented young man is the most caring, charismatic, funniest kind of guy you'll ever meet! I had a horrible experience here. I have progressive alopecia and finally braved the step of getting wig advice. First visit with a friend to see what was on offer was quite fun but when I returned on my own I was treated as a nuisance/time waster and couldn't get help or advice about the wig I was trying on. In fact, Scott was hurtful, dismissive and rude. I left upset and trying very hard not to cry. It was humiliating. I think they work on the principle that some customers guarantee a sale more than others. Hardly an empathetic approach. I have since bought 3 lovely wigs from a fantastic vendor. read more

I have been a loyal customer of Judi's for the past seven years, buying her wigs at least once sometimes twice a year. Unfortunately this year reality hit me when I walked into her store. Judi was completely unprofessional and rude towards me. In the past I just dismissed her rudeness as her personality and let it go, but this year she was unwilling to serve me because she had "other places to be" (I came at 1 the store closes at 5). She is a business woman and always made me feel I was getting a good deal on my previous purchases, claiming "I'll sell it to YOU for...". Since she was unwilling to serve me I decided to purchase the exact wig I bought from her last year, online. I paid around $600 for the wig in store, a reliable online retailer was selling it for around $300. I would hope to be treated with a little more respect when spending so much money. I will be taking my business elsewhere, to a place that appreciates me and my money from now on. read more
