I retired and was told my insurance carried over to Securian. I called them and got a tiny policy because the cost to carry was HUGE. They sent me a bill for $262. I paid in full because they said monthly was not an option. I got a cancellation notice for non payment. Called them and they said the payment was not enough. They sent me another bill that was more. I asked for my money back and they would never give it back although they cancelled my policy. I complained to the states DOI, so almost a year later rather than send my money back, they claimed that I was mistakingly cancelled and they reinstated me and sent a bill. I replied that I want money back not their insurance because I had been cancelled for almost a year and if I had died no insurance would have been available. DO NOT BUY SECURIAN ANYTHING. read more

My mother unfortunately passed away, she had a life insurance policy with Securian. I've submitted the requested documentation 7 times on their websites and it even says they received it. Nothing is progressing and nobody is admitting to receiving any documents. When I try to reach out and try to submit documents another way, they say they'll reach out in 24 hours, but NEVER do. I wish there were zero stars to rate a company. We have paid our Minnesota Life Insurance policy premiums for over 30 years. We have been trying to get information on the policy for the last eight months. We have been asked to fill out multiple forms and send them authorizing someone to speak with us. I've sent them in 4 different times and the company never admits to receiving them. I've called dozens of times and keep getting transferred from department to department and no one can provide information. We always get disconnected. Today I have been on the phone over 4 hours! Securian Financial is responsive when we are sending them money. When we need information or would like to change how the policy is invested, they run us in circles. I do not recommend anyone invest with this company because their customer service is nonexistent, there is no one with authority to speak with, and they have done nothing that was promised. There has to be more responsive companies. I see from their ratings that my experience is their normal standard. read more

Paid into policy and they keep giving the run around about paper work not received or decision is pending. Worst insurance company I have ever had to deal with. Contacts you for information, send it in immediately, through there online portal. Told it will take 7-10 business days to review paperwork... Business day 11 call back, sorry not reviewed yet. Try back on business day 15, another call and another sorry still not reviewed. Each time you call they will say they have not got the paperwork yet or they just got the paperwork and are starting their 10 day review. This will happen over and over as they keep asking for more paperwork. They say they need 10 days to review after they receive documents. They are obviously trained to say this! What I do not understand is why they need to wait weeks and then decide they need more documents. Why could they not determine they needed more documents inside the same 10 days. I would give it weeks and then call and they would still not have the document or through some strange coincidence would have just got it. One of the times the doctors office had records that the documents had been sent long before Securian stated they received them. In the end they stated I was not eligible because it had not been 6 months between my cancers. It does not qualify for new cancer benefit, but they say it also is not a recurrence. Well what is it Securian? How about a little transparency and not just a message from Grace H saying they would like to clarify my concerns. That just means they want to show some concern on this site, but continue to ignore you in the background. If you own a company or are involved in the decision of what insurance company to use, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! I hope that next year my company will chose to use a different company and I plan on expressing my disapproval to my company leaders. IRA I forgot about was transferred here. My email address was on file with both previous IRA companies before it ended here. I live at a different address and that was tracked with the other companies. Securian somehow said my address was completely different than what the previous IRA companies had. Told me my email address wasn't on "file". Tracked administrative fees/paper fees without notifying me. Terrible company with no awareness of tracking pivotal pieces of information. They sell inexpensive Life Insurance policies to the elderly that they never intend on paying out. They use OnPoint Credit Union to market to the elderly. My 79-year-old father was a member of OnPoint Credit Union for over 20 years. They sold him a bogus life insurance policy through Securian Financial. If you are elderly and you get a letter in the mail form OnPoint offering Life Insurance through Securian Financial, throw it in the garbage because it is worthless. read more

I don't know where to begin with how bad this company is. I have been transferred 4 times already only to get hung up on or just hear nothingness. Any agent I do get a hold of is either incompetent, has a bad attitude, or has no idea on how to help me. They can't find my information even though I have an account number and I keep getting transferred to "someone who can help me". But that person does not exist. If there is any cash out on my policy it will be taken up by a monthly payment for insurance that I no longer need. Then I am sure they will send me to collections. I have had life insurance account for at least 45 years and if I could give ZERO rating, I would. When making a payment, you either have mail a written check to them, or on the phone, they ONLY take bank routing # and account #. NO CREDIT CARDS. This is archaic business practices. I have dealt with these issues for too long and I am done. I cashed out my policy today so I never have to deal with this company again! With reviews of ONE out of 5 they obviously have multiple issues that they are not willing to resolve. My original account was with Minnesota Life and did issues started when they were bought out. After never missing a payment for three years on my life insurance policy, my auto-pay didn't go through. I went to pay the next quarter and saw that payment didn't go through and my policy had been cancelled. I never got any warning from them at all. I applied for re-instatement of the policy and they drug the process out for over a month. Then said I had to re-apply again. I sat for 3 months without any life insurance. This company is awful. I just got off my third phone call with Securian Financial. My previous company chose to have them manage our life insurance for some reason. I am looking to continue my previous life insurance coverage. I called the first time and got a quote, then I called the second time to say, "yes, I want to proceed with buying this life insurance." They confirmed the amount was correct and then sent me the paperwork via email for me to print, sign and return. When I received the paperwork the cost was 65% more than they quoted me. I called them to figure out what happened and a different person answered and said, "I don't know what happened, but you and I both agree that this is the price for that coverage." What? You and I both agree?? What is that, some kind of jedi mind trick? It appears they are either 1) disorganized, or 2) dishonest. Either way, I do not "agree" that is the price. I have to start over now that I have the paperwork and determine how much coverage I can afford and then sign and return the paperwork. @Securian, my advice to you is stop providing misinformation to potential clients. If it was by accident, you need to do a better job of hiring and training. If on purpose, you are unethical! If I could give zero stars I definitely would. They have stripped away about $200 from me all because of hidden fees. When I tried to make my 1st transfer out to another IRA they refused so they sold my account to another company which dropped my money even more. Then there were still continued fees that were occurring which dropped my amount even more. I got charged for doing a transfer for doing an IRA to IRA transfer even though I was told I was not going to be charged anything. In a nutshell, I'd NEVER recommend them to anyone. If I NEVER would have made the move to transfer they would have continued to take my money and strip my account to $0 all because of their fees. read more

I agree with other reviewers, If 0 stars were possible, this company would get them. My husband enrolls us in life insurance, we wait for them to deduct the payment from his paycheck and boy did they take it. Then on I receive a letter in the mail yesterday, August 26, 2024, stating that because I never sent them a letter of Evidence of Insurability, which I never received, they are closing the insurance, The letter was dated August 16th. How extremely convenient to sit on a letter for over 10 days and then only have 4 to resolve a problem that is on their end. So I called and asked where is the letter I needed to have signed and after she verified my information. Just hung up She asked me what was my employment and I told her I was to be insured under my husband's policy. SHE HUNG UP. It was not a dropped call. I got to go through the 10 minute call all over again to connect to a very rude rep that refused to answer my question as to where is the letter that needed to be signed, this clown goes, " there is no need to cuss or yell at me". I did not cuss or yell at him. I asked, where was the letter. If a rep takes that as abusive behavior from a client, he better grow thicker skin. Securian Financial are a bunch of THIEVES!! We found out we had $75 left in this account from an old company my husband worked for about a year ago. He contacted Securian Financial and told them we would keep it with them and see what it does. Several months ago, we saw that they took about $27 in "fees". So my husband contacted them and said send us the $51 and some change. He wanted to closed the account. So they sent him the paperwork. He filled it out and sent it in expecting to get his money. Today he called them because he hadn't received it and it had been almost a month. The woman on the other end said there were $51 and change (the exact amount that was due him) in "fees", so he wouldn't be getting any money back! My employer switched to them for Employee Life Insurance and they've been giving me the runaround for months!! I still have no coverage and had to look them up to see if they were a legitimate company because they seem to be a scam. They've had me fill out the same form 4x by mail because they don't have an online system, don't take information over the phone, and can't email documents or receive documents. They say they can, but the documents are not in any format that can be opened - I've tried PC, Mac, phone, my work computer - nothing can open them. I called my own private life insurance company to increase coverage and it took only 24 hours to get it done. If I'd know my employer was going to choose a scam company for life insurance some day, I would have only had private life insurance and would be paying much less rates from 6 years ago. read more

Run!!! Securian Financial will not be there for you! My father recently passed and I was always told by him to call Securian upon his death. So, I did, here is a break down of the calls 1st call to them - I was told they found an "active" policy and that they would be sending me next steps in the mail. 2nd call to them - They advised that my fathers birthday did NOT match the policy? My explanation, my father was in his mid 80's, he was born in his home and they later registered him at a registrar. At that point, I was told by a Securian Representative that they get this a lot with seniors and that it should not be a problem. 3rd  from them - they are now having trouble finding the policy all together? (I mentioned to them that someone found it at some point?). Also, I had "in my possession" a bill (from Securian) dated a month earlier, billing my father for the insurance. I provided Securian with "THEIR POLICY NUMBER" AND " THEIR  ACCOUNT NUMBER" based off of the bill that I was looking at and guess what?? They could NOT find it, they said that they needed a correct birthdate. In the end, I was incorrect about the "Insured" it was my mother not my father that was the "insured". Which, I totally acknowledged as I was going through a lot and frankly over looked it. Regardless, If you take nothing else from my experience, take this: My father wrote checks to them for over 20 years (possibly longer) always sending a check made out to them with only the policy number and account number and they somehow were able to allocate his money to the account but when I all to start a claim, they have no record of any policy). Seems to me, that their strategy here is to complicate the process when they believe they have a payout to make.  Somehow, all the details came to light when they realized that there is no payout needed. Frankly, my expectation here would have been, I provide THEIR POLICY NUMBER or THEIR ACCOUNT NUMBER (they find it) and tell me sorry for your loss but the insured was not your father and rather your mother. It's quite astounding to me that Securian was not able to find the policy and account numbers THAT THEY PROVIDED FOR THE PURPOSE OF FINDING YOUR file? read more

Absolutely terrible company. I'm not able to send in a complaint for Securian's Health Insurance service, so I am leaving it here. I am a student with high medication costs. They made me wait for 2 months just to register my account number, and a month past the date they were supposed to have that done by, THEY STILL HAVEN'T REGISTERED MY ACCOUNT NUMBER. I can't leave a complaint anywhere and every time I call to ask them to register me, they tell me they'll have it done in a few days. Their employees are on strike ... probably because they're a garbage company to work for. Well they're garbage for customers, too. They have made it very clear that I am at their mercy and I can damn well wait until they get around to registering me so I can get my $2000 back for my medications. I have had to ask other students who are registered and make many phone calls just to get basic information about what they will cover when they get around to giving me access to the insurance I paid for. Great customer service! Figured out problems very quickly and was overall very friendly.

This company is awful. Due to an error in their system, I didn't receive my bill for my annual premium payment. They didn't call or email me; they just let my policy lapse. When I called them two months later to ask about the payment process, they told me that the policy could be reinstated easily and quickly. That was three months ago, and they still haven't reinstated my policy. They've sent me single pages of forms through email every other week, with each email claiming that it would be the last step in the process. I'm not sure what to do next, but at this point, I think that I can claim damages. This has been a truly awful experience. DO NOT USE Securian. read more

Depositing money is super easy and fast (electronic options). Withdrawing your money is the slowest I've ever seen a financial company (no electronic options)...they have to 'mail' you the withdrawal paperwork, and then after that whole process they have to 'mail' your check out...so that adds another several more weeks. read more
