They are nothing but scammers. I got car payments insurance with them because my bank kept pressuring me to do it. Well Covid-19 forced them to make my car payments for me, but they are making a lot of excuses not to pay anything or pay less than the contract says. Customer service is useless and keep changing their story every time I call them. Mid November I received a cover letter from Securian Financial. It included a letter dated 3/25/20 that I had not received before, stating that in order to continue my life insurance policy my premium would increase 830% to over $16k annually. There was NO offer of a reduced death benefit for the current premium. It is obvious to me that the goal was for me to drop my policy in which case I would have paid premiums for over 30 years & the company would BE OFF THE HOOK FOR PAYING MY FAMILY A DEATH BENEFIT! I called Securian-extremely difficult-was promised a return phone call which I have NOT received. These people should GO TO JAIL! This was NOT a term policy. Be warned if you do business with this company I believe they will do whatever it takes to keep your money & will NOT protect your family. This company Fs with people's lives at the very point most of us are at the end of rope. Is the title customer service some kind of inside joke? I have had nothing but terrible experiences dealing with Securian Retirement. The website is lacking to say the least. Very difficult to navigate and doesn't work for basic communications, my Walmart account is more efficient than Securian's website. Calling was my next step which was equally inefficient and very difficult to navigate. Once I was able to get thru the pre-recording I followed the prompts to get a one time text message to down load their app. I never received the text. I had to hang up and call back because there is no way to get back to the original automated menu. A word of advice, listen carefully to the recording. It does the opposite of what we are accustomed to, it says if the SS# is incorrect then press 1. I have now spent at least 6 hours on hold only to speak with some of the most incompetent, attitude laced and rude customer services reps I have ever encountered. I place the incompetency on Securian and it's management more so than the actual reps. It has been pretty clear they aren't given much if any information and doesn't seem they are trained for the job at all. I spoke with one very nice woman Misti, she sounded like she was trying her best but either didn't have access to the info or wasn't trained how to interpret it. I was told repeatedly that the docs I submitted for a HARDSHIP WITHDRAWL were not good enough. I was also told that all of my faxes had been received INCLUDING the pages showing I wanted the monies direct deposited, and NO taxes taken out. Only upon logging into my account did I see the balance had been reduced significantly. NO ONE contacted me to let me know the HARDSHIP WITHDRAWL was happening. I called AGAIN! Got yet another customer service rep that was anything but. She made it very clear with her tone she regretting picking up my call. She could only tell me the check went out over night and I should get it in a few days. I will repeat that IT WENT OUT OVERNIGHT AND I SHOULD GET IT IN A FEW DAYS, WHAT!?!?! and that taxes had been taken out. So the OPPOSITE of what I asked for. She spent an exorbitant amount of time clicking through my account after I asked if the check could be canceled and the disbursement be re-done. I had to go, she agreed to put thorough notes on the account as to what we spoke of and I would call back in an hour or so. She also told me the reason it went out OVERNIGHT but not really because it will take a few days was because my "signature" page was missing and the page regarding my bank account routing and account number along with the question regarding taxes. I had already confirmed with Misti that all the pages of my fax had been received including these pages. So I said I would refax them. HOW DID A WITHDRAWL GET PROCESSED WITH MISSING DOCS AND A MISSING SIGNATURE?!?!!?!?! Needless to say at this point probably but she did none of that according to the next incredibly rude lack of customer service rep I spoke with. He couldn't be bothered helping a customer. Just said he didn't have any more information other than the check went out regular mail and I should get it in a week or so. About five minutes later or so I received an email from Securian saying my request had been denied.DENIAL?!!?!?! THEN WHERE HAS MY MONEY GONE? OH WHERE OH WHERE HAS MY MONEY ALL GONE.... Heavy sigh... I can see nothing will be done or even addressed some of these "reviews" go back to 2016. They are terrible. They were good until about 6 months ago. Even when the market was growing my account was losing money. Last month the loss was significant. Customer service is horrible. I called to take a withdrawal. A grntlemen said the form would be sent overnight. I called 5 days later and was told it was mailed and they did not overnight. 12 days later I received form. I completed, marked to have my check over night mailed, faxed and called the day after to make sure they had received. I was told yes BUT it takes 5 business days to process. I was told they did not follow up or email when completed. I wad told UPS would contact me to provide a tracking number. I have to admit I have never experienced this poor service with any of my 401 accounts EVER. I DO NOT RECCOMEND this company. read more

I recently separated from my company and I received a mail from Securian offering the option to continue my coverage by converting or porting my life insurance and pay the insurance directly. I called several times to get the information for the cost and how to apply. The first time I got the information and the agent said that will send the form for application via email. I did not receive the form so I called back and they transfer me to 4 different agents and different numbers without solving the problem. The last agent gave the number that I called in the first place. After trying to get me connected to that number i got again an automated message asking the same information (name, date of birth etc.) that I already gave them 4 times. Then I gave up and I hung up as I was very frustrated and I already spent about half hour trying to talk with somebody able to help with my simple request to get the form for applying. I just got off the phone again with Securian. My employer changed to this policy on life, crticial accident and hospital indemnity, long process, website sucks, says that there coverage and not. Was just told that the accident policy is limited, an accident is an accident and that is why I am paying for extra coverage and securian is telling me that there is not. Now it will be 2 months plus before I get my $$ returned. Reason we canceled they said we would be able to pay every 2 weeks like we wanted but instead they tried to force us to pay 6 months at a time. We immediately canceled with them because they already was having shaddy practices. Now they are stealing our money even though our account is noted as canceled before they billed us. read more

One week after my husband's death, a letter of condolescence, blank forms and instructions had arrived in my mail box. One month after my husband's death, all proceeds were were in the bank. Contrast with my mother, not an email, not a letter of condolence; not a blank form to complete, not a letter, not an email, not guidance of any kind. One month later, I have posted two claims on the site an received not a confirmation of receipt or a phone call returned. So, a month later, all paperwork, death certificate and plea for help submitted online, I continue to make daily phone calls, awaiting a response. Horrific, covid-isn't-excuse-enough service. Buy MetLife! They were so fabulous I even left the money in a fund with them and wrote checks on it. They made it SOOOOO easy and Securian is just another nightmare adding pain and grief to life. read more

I asked him to send us an account statement with the rollover paperwork and he said we could get that online. I said he doesn't have anything setup on line. When I told him the separation date with his previous employer, "Joe", said "oh, we didn't have online service at that time I guess I can mail you one". wow. read more

I hate this company. I signed my small business of 15 people up for Securian Financial Group retirement in 2004. There are so many ways that we are all dead tired of dealing with Securian: my accountant that now deals with them, my spouse who used to deal with them, & myself are fed up. First for the first 3 years each year before the end of the year I talked with them about performing an analysis to see if my spouse & I who own the company would be allowed to contribute to our personal retirement plans that year. Each year Securian said yes go ahead and so we contributed funds. Each year they were wrong, Completely wrong. Each year they sent all our $$ back to us saying our program would not allow us to contribute that year. One year they charged us a penalty for return of the contribution. After 5 years of never being able to put in any funds for my spouse or myself we wanted to stop using the plan. They would NOT allow us to transfer the plan to another company unless we paid a $28,000 fee which galled me. Our employees wanted to stop using them & switch to other firms, but they would not allow any current employees to transfer their funds to another retirement company. So now they treat us badly because we don't want to use their plan. But will not let us transfer out unless we pay the Huge fee to them. They called me today at 5am to ask about a form that we filled out 2 months ago. The group manager claimed they did not know the call was to me CELL PHONE. They called about a form that was already filled out correctly. But I think our account guy was being petty and thought it would be funny to give me & my 3 kids a 5am wake up call. I actually considered Closing the company & letting all the staff go & starting a new company to get rid of these folks. Don't sign up for a retirement plan with Securian. If you want to ask them to tell you (in writing) what the fees will be if later you want to stop using Securian Financial Group?? read more

Today, March 23, 2018 I called to switch from paper to paperless statements. There is a phone number on their documents to "Go Paperless" 800-995-3850. After 14.5 minutes I gave up and hung up the phone. Their Representative that sold me the account hasn't called in over 5 years. If it wasn't so difficult I would move my account. Securian requires an egregiously long blackout period of 15 business days to close the 401K investment contract. In addition they do not know the rules relating to blackouts since they are also stating that distribution requests must be submitted 5 business days "prior to the blackout", effectively increasing their blackout to 20 business days....a full month they freeze the 401K plan assets. I have requested their compliance department confirm the information since the representative clearly doesn't understand what "blackout" means. read more

Terrible people. They exist to take your money. My employer automatically enrolled my in their 401k program and I paid into it for a few weeks but I'm only 18 so saw it unreasonable especially since I am likely going to change employers. It was extremely difficult to access my account and had to call them and jump through hoops just to cancel paying them weekly. There is no way to access your money unless you get fired or are retiring. Recently I actually was fired though due to covid 19 and tried to withdrawal my money online but it said I had to call them. I only had 60$ in there and they don't give you your full amount back, so it would be about 45$ I said ok whatever then they said there's a 60$ "Processing Fee" so basically if I submitted a forum for withdrawal I would literally just be paying them 15$. There is no way for me to get my money. Total crooks. I could wait till I'm 80 and retired but I don't think I'm gonna even remember about the 60$ I worked hard for when I was 18. Sad. read more

My partner passed away in March, and dealing with this insurance company has been so stressful!!! They keep placing blame on Dr.'s and Dr.'s state that documents requested have been sent. I have my theory....and that is that this company is earning interest on my insurance benefit, and doesn't want to pay it out. Its hard enough when a loved one passes, but to have to deal with a company for over 4 months after is ridiculous!!! Not a happy customer, and would never refer a friend to them. read more

I've had a few small retirement accounts with this company for over a decade, and when I was leaving my last job decided to consolidate my accounts with Securian into my government Thrift Savings Program account. I completed all the paperwork, and was under the understanding that everything was finished, as one of the Securian accounts had transferred over to my Charles Schwab account that I had easy access to, I saw the funds appear, and figured the TSP funds had also transferred. This was in December of 2015. I thought all was well and more importantly, properly finished. Fast forward to June of this year (2017) when they were calling my mother's number to inform me that the transfer never went through. My retirement account has been sitting in a cash account for nearly a year and a half. They have taken no responsibility for this, made no financial amends for keeping my account in a cash account which earned no interest or growth FOR NEARLY A YEAR AND A HALF. Now my accounts have FINALLY been moved and they had the gal to charge me a 35$ "management fee" and a 95$ termination fee. Stay away from these thieves, they are terrible, incompetent and horrifically inept. read more

The company makes it very hard to pay off loan amounts from Insurance Policies. I would think their goal is to make 8% off their customers as long as possible. It pretty simple, the company should allow their customer to pay off loan amounts on insurance policies like they allow for their insurance premium payments. Smells pretty fishy to me. read more

This Company is horrible I was introduce to this company thru American Heritage Federal Credit Union. I went out of work for a surgery on my knee June 3, 2019. I have disability coverage on two of my loans with the credit union thru this company, my Line Of Credit and Car Note. I was informed per their policy there is a 14 day retroactive elimination period, which was June 17, 2019. I submitted my claims June 21, 2019 and it is now June 22, 2019 and no funds have been received at this time. Every time I call I get the run a round and no one seems to be able to answer my questions. I continue to make my loan payments which means this company is still receiving payments. When your credit union or bank offers coverage make sure you conduct an investigation on the third party I was under the impression that my credit union handles this matter and that is not the case. I believe I have been robbed, this company are thieves. read more

The Company #MinnesotaLifeInsurance dba Securion Financial Services persuaded my late partner to purchase accidental life insurance over the phone knowing he was ill. He was under the impression he was being sold Mortgage Insurance. I was his long time partner and beneficiary. I was recently asked to supply a death certificate which CLEARLY STATES (BY PHYSICIAN) the cause of death as "accidental death". Yes, he had underlying health problems as they would have known when they sold him the policy. -- However, 2 weeks prior to his death he had a very favorable and positive outcome from his Physicians. Including their being no swallowing issues. He had swallowing tests that were all normal. Furthermore, I am actually shocked he was sold this type of insurance policy (over the phone) when the agent must have been aware of his health issues. They refuse to honor the claim. read more

NEVER USE THIS COMPANY!! I was sold a variable life insurance policy (as a single female with no kids) as a "tax shelter" by my (former) financial advisor. I have spent the last 3 years trying to find a way out of it. It has been the biggest nightmare of my financial life and the biggest "financial rape" I have ever experienced. Just to give you a small example (as I still have not gotten out of it yet) I found way to transfer my funds to an annuity without taking tax penalty or surrender costs. It took me several months working with a new advisor to decide which policy to transfer to. My new advisor was on the phone helping me stop my premium payments until I decided to transfer. MN life( aka Securian) said "sure! no problem!" they then sent me an inconspicuous bill for $8500 saying I owed that much in premium. I found out today, they actually took out a "loan" against my policy to pay their bill because I hadn't paid it. ( IN my eyes and my financial advisor, we had called to stop premium payments) This "loan" now generates a taxable event. They claimed I just asked to stop automatic withdrawals from my bank, if I want to reduce the monthly premium to $0 there is different paperwork to fill out.... read more

I recently retired and through some fault other than my own, there was $79.00 left in my retirement account. I contacted Securian and was told that all my paper work was still valid and my signature was good and they would send me a check with in about 7-10 days. I got the check but it was for $37.00. Minnesota Life who issued the check had taken out $40.00 in service fees. That's 51% of the moneys that were due. Watch out! They think their service fees are more important than returning your money! read more

These people are incompetent. After I was laid off, I decided to withdraw my Roth 401K contribution amount from Securian where my former company had our retirement plan (I'm over 55 so I can do this without the 10% penalty). I planned to have the already taxed contributions I'd made placed in my bank account, and the earnings on my contribution (which are taxable) rolled over to a Roth IRA at E-Trade. That way, if I found employment and didn't need the funds, I could re-deposit them into my new E-Trade Roth IRA and continue to watch them grow. I filled out Securian's obtuse paperwork correctly- there's even a check box- "Roll over taxable earnings and disburse contributions to plan holder." It's pretty clearcut, once you find it. First thing, I get a phone call from a confused Securian person asking me what I wanted to do, despite having included a NOTE in my paperwork EXPLAINING it to them- IN ADDITION TO THEIR OWN PAPERWORK WHICH HAS A CHECKBOX FOR THIS TRANSACTION (!) I explained in detail, and had them repeat back to me what I'd said (I've had dealings with them before, you see- more about that later). A few business days later, I get a confirmation from Etrade that new funds were deposited. Except that they'd done exactly the opposite of what their own paperwork and my written and verbal explanations had asked them to do- they'd deposited my contribution amount into the Etrade account (which was the bulk of the funds) and the earnings amount into my bank account. I emailed and left phone messages. They responded, and apologized, and I expressed my disbelief as to how they could have possibly gotten it wrong. They apologized again and asked me what I wanted to do. I said I wanted them to take care of the problem, and then they asked for additional information about how to do that. REALLY??? AREN'T YOU THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTION?? So I called ETrade and my bank, and both parties said all Securian had to do was reverse the ACH wire transfer, and then re-deposit the correct amounts to the respective branches. I relayed this information to Securian. Instead, a week laterI received a letter from Securian addressed to E-Trade at my home address, asking E-trade to refund the difference to Securian via certified mail. I called up, and yep, I was right, they didn't read far enough down the paperwork I submitted to find E-trade's address, and just went with the first one they found. They sent the letter that was supposed to go to E-Trade to my home address NOT Etrade's address. I am at a loss as to how they could possibly fuck this up any other way, but I won't be surprised if they do. If I miss a mortgage payment because of this though, I will certainly take legal action. read more
