They pushed for a massive list of expensive diagnostics that ignored everything we told them about her history and our wishes for her end-of-life comfort. It felt less like a doctor's office and more like a high-pressure sales floor. The "Why" (Follow the Money): I did some digging into why a "neighborhood" vet would act this way. It turns out UrgentVet is not a local business. * It is owned by American Veterinary Group (AVG). * AVG is owned by Oak Hill Capital, a multi-billion dollar Private Equity (PE) firm in New York. EBITDA over Pet Care: In the world of Private Equity, the goal isn't just "helping pets"--it's EBITDA (corporate-speak for maximizing profit margins to make the company look more valuable for a future sale). When a PE firm runs a vet clinic, the veterinarians are often under immense pressure to hit "revenue targets" and "average transaction goals." This is why you get the "crazy" high-pressure pitches for tests your pet doesn't need; the vets are often paid on commission (production), and their corporate bosses are tracking every dollar they "missed" by not upselling you. The Bottom Line: If you want a vet that listens to you and respects your pet's quality of life without trying to pad a corporate balance sheet, look elsewhere. Our pets deserve compassion, not to be treated as a "revenue unit" for a New York investment firm. They even have a name for what they do it's called "Gold Standard Pressure" where the Vets (good people) are trained to present EVERY POSSIBLE diagnosis, test they can guilt you into. Please look for local ownership and get PE firms out of the Petcare business.
