HE FIXES PEOPLE!…read more Robert is an artist, the admiration he enjoys from those working in Austin medicine is impressive. He's like a rock star to the hospital staff; which believe me, seeing that respect, inspires confidence and renders an apprehensive, stressful moment much easier! He is up on the latest technologies and highly skilled in an amazing number of procedures. I've had two surgeries by him, including robotic; both effective and ultimately forgettable events. His father was a legendary Austin surgeon and the apple falls close to this tree. I'm not wanting surgery, but if needed, this is where I'll go. Robert's demeanor and personal approach, is anxiety relieving and he explains your situation in understandable terms. It's also worth noting, Austin Surgeons has several other talented practitioners who have treated my family members. While Askew is my doctor, I don't think there is a wrong answer there.

His bedside manner is outstanding. Pre and post surgery he really took that extra time to explain everything to me. I knew exactly what was happening and how it would be done. His nurse, Sara, anticipated and took care of my after surgery needs. She was very personable and friendly, even when I talked to he by phone on post surgery meds! She was very patient and kind. I'm hoping I'm done with surgeries for a long while, but will be using this Dr. Askew and his team in the future if needed. Excellent job. Thank you so much for all you do!

I am so glad that I found Dr. Havranek on Yelp and decided to make an appointment; I believe he is…read morethe best choice there is! When I started to have severe GI issues, I booked an appointment with my local and current GI doctor only to be asked generic survey like questions, yelled at, and told I had IBS before being pushed out of the exam room. Luckily, I had made an appointment with Dr. Havranek as well in case I needed a second opinion. It is pretty obvious that his staff is highly trained; they are always polite, knowledgeable, and available. When I first met Dr. Havranek, he shook my hand, was so polite, and asked individualized questions to my GI needs. He was even able to predict some of my symptoms before I got sick showing that he was listening to me and knows his stuff! If you didn't know, he does research at his facility, which helps me to trust his expertise even more because he is constantly learning about the digestive system and not just using outdated information. When I had to meet with the nurse practitioner, instead of him, I was anxious, but now I am ashamed of my preconceived notions. The nurse was very helpful, informative, and polite (if you visit this practice, you can see that politeness is a value). I came unprepared to my appointment, which was completely my fault, and the nurse went out of her way to ensure that the reason for my visit was met. The second time I had an appointment with Dr. Havranek, the nurse practitioner was going to see me instead. When I asked to see the Dr., the nurse who took my blood pressure seemed very pleasant and unperturbed and made it happen! At this visit, even though he was busy with other rounds and endoscopy procedures, he took his time to answer all of my questions and set my mind at ease without rushing me through the door. We have a plan in place to get me to feeling better, and I am so happy that someone is finally taking my pain seriously! If you're concerned with price, they work out payment plans and are very understanding. You get results right away over the phone or through patient portal with email notifications. I love Maria, the medical assistant! She always has the biggest smile on her face, is accommodating, responsive to calls, and helpful I cannot say enough nice things about this practice and staff! They make you feel welcomed and like you're at the right place to get the help you need. I made sure to visit five times before posting a review for accuracy :)

He had to take time off work to chase down office staff to find out what the issue was, not the other way around. So proper prep protocol for medication and diet is not going to be able to be adhered to at this point. If anything happens to him as he is our sole income earner and we have a child with cerebral palsy, I will definitely be seeking legal advice to action against this office.

He used to be friendly, when I saw him, some thirty years ago, but that all changed, most likely because of some major upheaval in his life. He's not the same guy. It must be noted that the surgery he did on me, way back when, became infected, overnight, with an abcess. When I called and told him the situation, he told me I was wrong. I know my body, I know what I felt. I demanded to come in. He took one look, and told me I needed surgery, again, immediately. He got it right, the second time, but the pain made me see stars every time I used the bathroom, for the next week, or so. Really bad: Every single colorectal specialist I called for a checkup appointment, this time around, made one for me, but then called back and told me I was this guy's patient, so they couldn't see me! What?? When I told them I didn't want to see the guy, they apologized, but said he was the head of their medical group. I had to drive to San Antonio to get a great guy to help me.

I had a camping trip to Big Bend planned in two days, and I found Dr. Mgione was part of my insurance plan and (wow---lucky) he had availability that same day. I went to see him. He said we can just ride it out; it'll go away eventually but will return, or I can clip it off, and it will never return. I agreed to do the latter. I told him about my trip, and asked if we should wait, and he said that it should be fine. So I bent over, things were numbed up, and he went to town. I left with no real instructions other than to fill a prescription for pain meds (vicodin) which I did. I drove home and had lunch. Well, 15 min later, I needed to have a BM. Oh no. I didn't realize what was going on back there, and I found something like a kotex napkin taped across my butt, which I had to remove, and gauze shoved up my butthole, which I had to pull out. The BM was painful and bloody. Then the pain began, where I was walking the floor for hours. The oxy made me nauseous. I went on my camping trip, but I was miserable. I ended up going back to Mangione about a month later because I was still in pain and still bleeding every time I had a BM. He said that I now had a fissure; he told me only 1 in a hundred get this. He suggested surgery but said it could cause incontinence. No thank you. I lived with this fissure for months, hoping it would heal, and bleeding every time I had a BM. I finally went to a good doctor at Austin Gastro, who asked if Mangione had stitched me up? I said no; the new doc said that he should have. He then asked if Mangione had recommended a stool softener while I was healing. Again no. The new doc gave me nitroglycerin cream to apply. He informed me that this might cause headaches, and it really did, but I kept applying and I finally healed, about several years after this disastrous event. This happened to me 15 years ago, but I will never forget it because it was a real mess. I am writing this to warn others.
