If you're into raw denim, "heritage wear," and the like you'll have a good time. The selection is awesome; it's not an enormous store but I could have stayed here for hours looking at everything. Recently I bought a chore jacket, some jeans, and a belt. They hemmed the jeans for me and shipped it to my house down in OC, I bought it on Saturday, and the package arrived on the following Friday. Super fast. Overall, the prices are high but the quality of the product and service makes me feel like this place is a really great value. I've had the pleasure of visiting the SF, LA, and NY stores and have always had a fantastic experience. The team has always been gracious and helpful on my journey to the perfect fitting jeans. Most recently I purchased my GRAIL leather jacket and had it shipped. It fit TOOO perfectly and didn't leave much room for growth or layering so had to exchange it. I have been to the self edge sf store and the staff was exceptional. I absolutely loved the experience of the store and i had high expectations for this store in los angeles. Wow this place absolutely sucks. I love the brands and clothing they have for selection but there is this one guy that works here that is terrible. This place is for enthusiasts who are paying extra to enjoy imported quality denim and he kind of swoops in and kills the experience. If you're looking for Iron Heart in Los Angeles, THIS is the place to go. The selection at this store goes well beyond Iron Heart. Everything, though expensive, is some of the highest quality goods you can purchase. Mina (with an M) and Nick were extremely helpful. This was my first time trying on Iron Heart and I'm a bit obsessive with how things fit - especially at this price point. They both spent their time helping me find the right size and even grabbed me several of the same shirt in the same size so I could make sure my OCD could make sure I got the perfect fit as there can be some variations within sizes. I left the store with two incredible shirts that will last a lifetime. They were two of the nicest, most patient people I've had the pleasure of doing business with and because of them, I'll definitely be going back. One thing to note is their return policy - they will only give store credit. Is this a bummer? Yes. But it just means you need to take your time and make sure whatever you're buying you love. This store came up as I was researching Japanese selvedge denim for sale in the US. Another site had linked their video of the brand darning a damaged pair of jeans on an old machine from the 1940s, which was pretty amazing. I knew I wanted to stop in and visit in person, as they carried more Japanese brands like Samurai, Sugar Cane, and Iron Heart. It's on the same side of the street as American Rag Cie, just further up the street. Parking options are street parking or maybe trying to find a lot. (Double check the lots though in case - last thing you want is to get towed in LA.) It's a small footprint and there were two employees working there when I went. Both were very helpful and were well versed on their brands, fit, sizing, and the history for all of the brands offered. I was unfamiliar with the sizing from most of the brands I mentioned and one of the employees (I wish I got her name!) stepped up and pulled some pairs and sizes for me to try. She did warn that because the Japanese sizing is different from Western sizing, people often have to size or up down, depending on the cut, brand, and weight of the denim. (She gave me a little disclaimer to try not to get discouraged if I tried on pairs and found some fit, while others didn't. This is normal when trying on Japanese selvedge denim.) I ended up going with a pair from Sugar Cane that were a deep indigo blue wash with a tapered straight leg and a high rise. They will hem the jeans for you, free of charge. Either you can pick them up from the shop when they are ready or they can be shipped for $10. I went with the shipping, as I wasn't going to be back in this part of LA for a long time. Pricing for the jeans varies between brands and styles. You are paying for quality denim made in Japan, some of the material woven on old-fashioned machines by hand. (These are a far cry from the denim offerings in any department store, as they are made mostly of cotton and are meant to be worn several times to be broken in.) Sugar Cane was a little on the lower end of the spectrum, while Iron Heart and Samurai were more expensive. Will definitely consider coming back again if I need another pair. read more

A really great store for high quality staples like t-shirts, flannels, and jeans with a lot of the brands sourced and made in Japan or in the US. They have an online store but being in the store, you are able to really feel the different knits and materials. They do have a fitting room in store so you can try thing son. Sizes can be somewhat limited and some shirts can be in Japanese sizing which is a little different from American sizing. The folks at Self Edge LA are super friendly and patient. I've been in there plenty of times, let them know I'm only trying things on for size/fit, and they had no problem letting me try on a bunch of denim to see what actually fit me, since I'm pretty new to selvage denim. They carry a lot of heavy-hitting brands like Iron Heart, Pure Blue Japan, and Samurai, but some of the more unique brands are Rick Owens, Studio D'artisan, and Merz B Schwanen. Pricing is on par with other US retailers. I bought a pair of Iron Heart jeans from them and had them hemmed there as well, which took a week but they were transparent about it. read more

Everything is top notch at Self Edge... From the quality of the goods (denim, shirts, outerwear & accessories) that they sell, to the customer service, I have nothing but great things to say. I had originally heard of Self Edge from knowing of their store up in the city (SF) on Valencia St. And I was glad they opened up shop not only in LA but on my beloved South La Brea Ave. It's a win-win to have them there... I just wish it hadn't taken me so long to finally make it down to their shop. I went in on a Saturday to bring in a pair of Levi's Made & Crafted denim to he hemmed & chain stitched. We were greeted immediately and I felt a nice vibe about the space immediately. The 2 gentlemen that were working there were super nice and I even got to chop it up with them for a little bit. Good people... I was told it was $25 for my denim to hemmed. You pay up front of course. I brought in another pair to match up to the length I wanted. I was a little hesitant to go to a new denim tailor as the last pair I brought to another well known denim tailor in the area was cut a little shorter than I wanted. But the reputation Self Edge has and their employees put me at ease and I knew I made the right decision to bring in my pair to them. I was told it would be ready my Monday afternoon and I thought that was a pretty quick turnaround as I was there to drop it off Saturday afternoon. Sure enough I got a call on Monday that my denim was done. I was real happy with the work they did and I know now that I've found my new denim tailor. The chain stitch was on point. I already had a feeling it was the right choice... I'll be back next time to look into the denim they sell at Self Edge. The Sixteen denim they have look great. The pieces they sell definitely aint for everybody as the prices speak to the quality and rarity of the goods. But good denim and specially curated pieces of clothing is like an investment. Came here for the 3sixteen Sample Sale. The actual sale was kind of horrible, with not much selection and anything worth buying literally sold out within the first 30 minutes. That being said, the staff was extremely nice and helpful, and even though I was all but clueless about raw denim and there was a 2-hour line waiting to get into the store, they were nice enough to explain any and all questions I had about sizing and were extremely upbeat and polite :) Edit: I was asked to edit my review by the owner of the shop because the 3sixteen sample sale was not offered or run by them but by the 3sixteen brand. Came here because my favorite pair of jeans that I've been wearing for 4 years were in dire need of repair! My favorite jeans had the crotch completely blown out and I wasn't too sure if there was going to be any way to revive them. I went to Self Edge because I have heard good things about their methods of repairing denim. The people there were very helpful and I'd say the service was very good. What makes Self Edge stand out in my opinion is their work when it comes to repairs. I thought there was no hope in bringing my jeans back to life because the crotch area was absolutely destroyed, but Self Edge was able to provide an extremely high quality repair. They don't simply just put a patch on your denim, but sew in new denim where the repairs need to be. I can see my jeans lasting me another couple years because of the repairs Self Edge has done. They also offer a copious amount of different denim brands. Whatever your denim needs, you're most likely to find something that suits you. terrible customer service. came here to get some denim hemmed and they stated a turnaround time of one business day. i waited a few days for their call to pickup my jeans, but decided to call them myself. they said the jeans were ready and they weren't sure why i did not receive a call. frustrated, i came to pickup my jeans...and they weren't even hemmed yet! no apology was given and just an explanation that the order may have been missed. i picked up my jeans the next day after they rushed to have them hemmed. definitely not coming back to this shop. it's such a shame too since they do carry a lot of great products, but the service was very subpar and discourteous. read more

Just know it's going to be pricy before walking in, but you'll walk out with a good pair of jeans. Think of it as an investment. The guy at the counter was helpful and asked what my budget is. I settled for a pair of 3Sixteen Slim Tapered jeans and got it hemmed to my preference. Due to extenuating circumstances, I couldn't pick up my jeans so for an extra $10, I had them shipped to my home address. I couldn't be any happier with my first pair of selvedge jeans. The employees here were super helpful, they did everything they could to get me into a pair of jeans and I appreciate them. After searching for quite a while I found some jeans that I liked and purchased them. Once I got home I noticed that one of the buttons had fallen off. When you purchase a $300+ pair of jeans you expect them to last a while, so naturally I was a little put off by the brand. When I went to to the store to return them, the employees were in contact with the owner, who said I couldn't return them, couldn't exchange them for a different pair, and couldn't even get store credit. My only option was to have them repaired. To their credit they offered the repair for free, but I have to have them mailed back to me. If you want a solid pair of denim to be honest you don't have too many options in the area, but I would suggest if you're in the market for some go to the 3sixteen store first. The employees are just as helpful, the jeans are solid and the returns are easy. read more

Ask for EJ! Tailoring review: Been getting my pants hemmed here for the past couple years (can't afford the pants they sell). Quality of tailoring is top-notch. Repairs and alterations are done with high perception to detail and craftsmanship. EJ took much of his time to help me get the right length and hem to my jeans. Hems with "chain stitching" is $25. Sounds hefty, but it's worth it... I've never had a single problem with their altercations and found their work to be flawless. Every stitch is solidly done and never seems to falter. Heck! As a working young adult, I can finally start investing in better clothes and accessories, and one of these is denim; to be more specific, raw denim. I'm not going to explain what raw denim is, but there are a lot of articles online that you can indulge in. Anyways, the guys here at Self Edge carry THE MOST high end products that can be found around the whole world. As Japanese cotton is the most sought for material, all their denim are Japanese cotton. At least that's what I think. I went in today, for the 2nd time to invest in a pair of 3sixteens. I tried different sizes and then a pair of Iron Hearts, which I found out were $335...A bit too much for my first investment. The guy that was helping was super insightful, patient and caring. I actually didn't feel bad if I was to just walk out after all the help I received. The only down side of these denim is that the lengths are fixed, which means you need to get them hemmed if you're not that tall. Luckily, these guys hem them for free, which is legit and their method, chainstitching, is top quality. Because I live in OC, I opted to have it shipped to my house, after dropping around $240 for the 3sixteen st-100. I am super excited to start this journey with the new denim, and to share the breaking in process. These guys know their denim guys, go check them out. I was expecting a long turn over time but to my surprise, I got my jeans the NEXT day in the mail. Quality of the hem was flawless and the service here is superb. Customer service is poor at best, when asked how much longer would it be I was offered my jeans back and a refund when we had already waited a month on them. The rep said on website it takes 3-6 weeks, but upon looking at website it say 15-21 days which to my estimation is 2/3 weeks. Some sales associate comes up to me and asks "Are you looking for something specific?" "Yea, I was wondering if these Average Joes were vanity sized or true to fit?" The guys working here not only know what they're talking about, but can answer all your questions. (Are these sanforized? How much will these shrink after a wash? How long does this specific pair take to fade?) Only having recently decided to upgrade from my True Religions (I can't believe I paid $200 for them), I got the chance to try on what real $200 jeans should feel like (Mmm...Iron Heart denim) and get real answers for questions about denim. For those uninitiated, or just looking to try on more expensive jeans, I recommend you take a look at offerings from Iron Heart, Real Blue Japan, Strike Gold, Skulls by an Alchemist, and Dry Bones. If the price tags on these scare ya, don't be afraid to ask to see any of the 3Sixteen jeans that they have. They look damn good too. I think I should note that Self Edge has a chain stitching machine to help you hem your selvege jeans so they're nice and sturdy. Lucky for us in the LA area, we have Denim Doctors to fix anything else, from blown crotch areas and seams to holes. If you visit these two stores, you'll never need to buy cheaper denim again, because these jeans will last for years. read more

Quite honestly it's an overhyped store. Subpar service paired with a sense of indifference from the attendant (stocky Asian, maybe Latino looking guy) is what disillusioned me from returning. I was ready to buy a pair of jeans but just wasn't sold on them. I basically wanted to know what would be more comfortable for everyday wear here in So Cal since different brands incorporate unique techniques/ attributes in craftsmanship, material, and weight. To paraphrase, the guy basically told me to "go with what you like" after I asked his opinion when comparing Roy's to some Iron Hearts and collab. 3sixteens. I'll admit it. I don't know diddly squat about denim except that it feels oh so good on and justifies my $$$ spent so much more than the designer jeans that I've wasted so much money on. In all honesty, my lack of knowledge has kept me away from LA SE and I've only made my purchases online. I always pictured the workers quizzing me before entering. "Feel this denim, is it sanforized or unsanforized?" When I finally had the nerves to come to get my bf's birthday present, I didn't face any workers testing my denim knowledge. There was only one friendly and very helpful worker grabbing various sizes for my bf and answering his questions. There was another customer who was even more clueless about denim than me and had piles after piles of jeans he was trying on. The worker was more than patient with him and my fears of being tested for my lack of knowledge disappeared. My first experience at LA SE was great. I will definitely come back for my next denim purchase instead of risking it online. I recommend anyone curious about denim to come check out LA SE. They won't pressure you to make any purchases and won't get mad if you try on the whole store and leave with nothing more but great denim knowledge. They are also super speedy with tailoring. Stopped in at Self Edge while waiting for my pizza to show up at Amalfi's. Got to fondle some amazing denim fabrics from all the usual suspects. Unfortunately for me, my taste in denim is particular to point of risking nonexistence. I want a 14-15 oz pair of selvage denim with tonal stitching and clean pockets. NOBODY makes it!! The store manager suggested I 1) check out the Iron Heart black overdye fade galleries, and 2) head down to American Rag to check out their selection of Nudies since none of the Americana-theme Japan brands had any tonal stitch offerings.
