Approximately 10 years ago I left a negative review because I had brought in a pair of jeans several years prior which they never repaired and still tried to charge me for. When I balked at paying for the work that was never done I was forced to leave my jeans there (hope they enjoyed them). Recently the business owner responded to my review saying that this isn't the level of service they expect to offer... The fact that it took 10 years for them to respond to a yelp review is incredibly funny, but very in par with the service, or lack thereof, I had received in person. Ultimately they are a small business and I wish them all the best, but I just don't see them doing anything to address their pattern of bad service nor the theft of my jeans, which they've never apologized for nor offered to make right. read more

Both the five star and one star reviews for Schaeffer's Garment Hotel are accurate. This is a cool and trendy shop. However, the attitude of the business and employees is as you would expect for a high end clothing retailer on Sunset. The customer is always wrong, and they can't be bothered. It is part of their identity, and not something that we should expect will change - just patron their business with caution. If you have something of significant monetary or sentimental value, it is a risky proposition to bring it here. LA County has far superior alterations specialists that have a better understanding of how to service and retain customers. Their denim is high quality, but the sizing is very non-traditional; it's best to go into the shop and be measured. If you need a re-sizing or repair, they will not make it easy for you. He promises my pants will be done 4 days. 2 weeks later he still hasn't touched them and then when I express my frustration he tells me to come pick them up as I should take them somewhere else for the guaranteed 1x free alteration. Robert and his staff are very unprofessional and incompetent. They have one simple job of fixing jeans and cannot even do that correctly. The owner, Robert is totally disrespectful and talks condescendingly towards his customers. The pair of jeans was sent back to me unaltered and with the seam still ripped, after paying $100! This place is a complete nightmare. I want to echo the other negative reviews that all seem to have the same issue: this place has terrible customer service and is straight up dishonest. I brought two jeans in to get tapered and they told me it would be ready in 2 weeks. 3 weeks pass and I didn't hear anything from them. I call them and they tell me that I'm wrong and they had told me 3 weeks. I ask them to give my jeans back to me and they gave one back (after a lengthy discussion during which I got visibly annoyed) and said the other is cut up but it would be ready tomorrow. If it was already cut up and they're working on it, why would they need an entire day? Just doesn't add up and they were clearly being shady. The next day, they tell me they never said it would take just one day and that it would be another few days. Again, they lied to me in the most obvious manner. At this point I completely got pissed off and it wasn't until I was screaming at them that they decided to actually do the work so I can pick them up that day. If they had just been honest and told me they fell behind a little and needed some extra time, I would have told them that's ok. Instead, they kept trying to make it seem like I was the one who was mistaken and even called me a liar. To top off the miserable customer service, the tapering was average at best and yet came with a premium price tag. If you want to spend top dollar on jeans that you love, stay away from here. read more

As a disclaimer: I don't live in Hollywood. I made the trek up from South Bay to get Rob to look at a pair of my Gustins. The first time we took out a bit of length, and I thought I had what I wanted, but the denim still wasn't looking right, so Rob slimmed 'em up free of charge. You can tell that he wants to invest in his customers, and I appreciate that greatly. To be frank, if you have a pair of selvedge denim that needs to be altered, you should try this place first. First of all, I gotta thank the owner. I was running late and stuck in your typical LA traffic while the President was in town and so I got to the store after it closed. I called about 15 minutes before closing and let him know that I was going to be there shortly and asked him if he could. Please wait for me. he told me no problem, take my time and that he would be there and he was. Probably the best part about the experience was just the conversation and getting to talk with the owner. One of the coolest and most respectful guys I've ever met. Now let's get to the good part. I've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on designer clothing and jeans and I have to tell you that I've never had denim of this quality. I've never had such a great fit with such a quality denim in my life. I've literally wore a pair of his jeans every day since I got them. You definitely get what you pay for. And the quality is beyond anything you've ever seen. The experience as a whole was amazing. I wasn't rushed, even though the store was closed, and Robert took his time to explain the fits and denims. tl;dr: the staff is friendly enough, the alteration was mediocre and the wait was long (though I knew that going in) So I dropped a pair of selvedge jeans off in early March, hoping to have them altered. I needed both a hemming and also wanted to have them re-tapered through the knee. After a little dialogue with the guy that was there, we agreed on a 6 and 3/4 inch taper. I was told that the wait was ~5 weeks and was okay with that. Got a phone call letting me know they were ready for me to pick up after ~4.5 weeks. Great! Got the pants home, tried them on; they fit! I've worn them for about a week now (~4 wears, they're new denim so I'm trying to break them in) and I noticed yesterday that the chainstitch hem has already come loose. This made me a little curious about the rest of the details, so I got my trusty tape measure out and it turns out they tapered them a lot closer to 7 inches than 6.75. Normally I wouldn't make a big deal about it, but I suggested to the guy doing the measurements that we taper to 6.5 and he convinced me to go with 6.75, so the fact that they both suggested a quarter inch difference and then failed to deliver on it is a little bothersome. I also took a look at where the taper begins and it's really more accurate to call it a taper through the calf because where the new thread and old thread meet up is a solid 4-5 inches below my knee. So all of that being said, I'm not exactly tearing my hair out about the whole thing, it was around $50 to have the work done, but probably wouldn't go back to have any other jeans altered. read more

I was a repeat customer until now. I'm a very fit conscious person, so I visit tailors often; so its not my first time at the rodeo. I also know the time it takes to properly repair or alter a garment. Did i mention i work in fashion? Oh yea, so i can safely say I know my shit! First off let me say that my review has nothing to do with Robert's repair/tailoring skills, its his business acumen and his communication skills or lack thereof that are in question. I took in a couple repairs on a tuesday afternoon and asked Robert if they would be ready to be picked up on the following tuesday; I was leaving the state to warmer weather and really wanted my beloved shorts with me. Robert said YES. Cut to the tuesday due date and they were not ready. I asked if they would be done wednesday before 3pm, he replied YES. Robert asked me to call wednesday morning to remind him (unprofessional but ok) Robert tells me that they will be ready, and that he would have whomever actually does the repairs work on them asap. I called and called, left several messages asking Robert to let me know if they were ready to be picked up and Robert would either say he would call me back in 5 minutes and would never call me back or i was told by Gunner that Robert was out and would return my call in 20 minutes when Robert returned, which he never did. Finally at 2:30pm Gunner asked if i could just pick them up and Robert finally returned my call and said they would be ready at 4:30 pm. I kindly reiterated that 3 was the latest and time i could come by and Robert said "well they wont be done so come and get them" no apology nothing. a few minutes after that conversation he calls me back and asked that I pick up my garments in the back alley from a secret door behind a white Cadillac, to which i replied "are you serious"? Roberts says he had to run out and they would be closing the store so if i wanted my garments that was what i had to do, although the business hours are 11am-9pm. So in summation, Robert is very rude and unprofessional and my repairs would have probably only taken an hour and a half to fix. He had them for over a week and couldn't squeeze that in? Seriously? I will never again refer any friends or clients and will never give that establishment any of my personal business and neither should you. We live in Los Angeles and there are plenty of other very great places to take your repairs were they will not treat you like an inconvenience. read more

This place has very high quality vintage leather jackets, boots, jeans, and Hats. I have been a long time fan of Serfontaine and levis but these guys take the cake with vintage denim and even new jeans made from some of the best denim I have seen. I got the Black jeans made by SGH and I love them. Good to see such great merchandise being made once again in the USA. Right here in Los Angeles to be exact. I got a pair of Blue Denim and I love them. I had a little button issue but I brought them back and he fixed it right on the spot. That is what we all need. Good customer service. I had a need to stop supporting big corporations that stitch overseas in sweat shops and keep your money here where it belongs, here in LA. Robert is the best! I have a leather jacket that I've owned for years, and was perfectly broken into, but was missing a couple of the decorative studs. Robert found the unique studs, because he did not have them in stock, and repaired my jacket to like-new condition again. This is in an open stretch of Sunset so thankfully there is a lot of street parking, but even if it were less accessible, I would make the trip! I ripped two holes in the crotch of my jbrand black cigarette jeans and was dispairing over the ridiculous price of denim repair at denim therapy in NY (and I would have had to wait two months to drop them off if I wanted to avoid shipping, no bueno!), so I looked up this place online and took my jeans there. Robert was really cool about it and my jeans were fixed in a week and a half, for a lot less than denim therapy. Love it! If you love your premium denim as much as I do, then you owe it to yourself to invest in a relationship with the Denim Repair Shop at Schaeffer's Garment Hotel for all your repair and alteration needs. It all started over three years ago, when major wear and tear and unpresentable holes rendered my all-time favorite pair of (discontinued) Levi's unwearable. I was hard-pressed to find a suitable contemporary replacement, until SGH brought my jeans back to life with their invisible repair technique. I've been a loyal customer ever since. No project is too big or too small, and the folks at SGH don't judge - if you love your denim, they care for them like their own. For roughly the price of one new premium pair, I can instead take three of four tried and trues to SGH to be rescued, restored, reconstructed, hemmed, tailored, you name it. Customer service is prized alongside craftsmanship at SGH. When I recently took a pair of brand new jeans with distressed detailing to be reinforced, the customization altered their fit in an unexpected way. The guys at SGH listened carefully to my feedback and concerns, and enthusiastically offered to adjust their work at no additional cost to me. Now the fit and finish are perfect as usual! I left these guys with a pair of jeans with a front-crotch-rip about two months ago. The rip was weird, it wasn't a full rip, it was like the threads stretched out to make a transparent 'rip.' Everywhere else I took them to said they would have to be patched ugly causing too much eyeballing on my crotch. So, I dropped them with Rob, he said three weeks, the customer service was good, and the price quote was reasonable considering he said they could fix them with 'invisibility.' Went out of town, kinda forgot, came back two months later, no ticket, and still got great service! They asked if they had called earlier in the day, and I said "no," and Rob and Joe became so apologetic about it I never got the chance to explain that my number had changed, and that they probably did call but that I did not receive it. They were apologetic for not contacting me, but they shouldn't have been because it was my fault. The customer service here is good if you ask me. The jeans are amazing, you can barely see the repair, and the hand stitching that was done obviously took a lot of time. I couldn't be happier. My favorite pair of jeans are wearable again! Joe also showed me some of the clothing items, the t-shirts, how they've been loomed and tailored in authentic 1940-1950's style. The loom being impressive; you really cant find cotton t-shirts with the specific look and feel anymore, and these guys are really doing it right! I've gotten five pairs of jeans made here and one jacket. Aside from the lengthy wait time (go in expecting that), you will get a pair of custom-fit jeans that only get better with time, unless you're one of those rare individuals for whom store-bought jeans were designed. I've seen complaints on here about Robert and his customer service, and maybe that's not his strong suit, but I've never really had a problem. Sometimes he's super busy and you might feel a little ignored and other times he'll hang out and kibitz with you -- like anyone who's trying to build a business and keep a demanding clientele happy. I recommend this place to a lot of my friends and I found out about it because someone recommended it to me years ago. I still have the first jeans I bought there and they are my girlfriend's favorite. That's how great they fit and have broken in over the years. read more

Bought my husband a gift card and it took him a while to finally use it. He got jeans, brought them home, put them on, and a rivet fell off. He brings them back, gets it fixed, takes them home, puts them on, and a rivet falls off. Schaeffers sends someone to our house and pick up the jeans, they fix the jeans, my husband picks them up, the guy handling the situation says (in front of our 4 y/o daughter), "this better not f*&%ing happen again". My husband wears the jeans twice, and a rivet falls off. They've chosen to not issue a refund despite their poor workmanship. Would not recommend. read more

Went to this rebel rousing clothing store today and what a great time we had. They were actually closed but the shop guy was lovely and opened up just to let us in. Myself and my galpal Lizzy were given a tour of the store by the handsome and friendly proprietor who knew more about hats than anyone. Based upon the reviews, I was looking forward to having my jeans altered here. Well... 1. I dropped off two pairs of jeans. I was told they'd be ready "in a week or two" and that I'd receive a call at that time. 2. Three weeks later, I called to see if they were ready. But instead of actually *checking*, the owner simply said that if I hadn't received a phone call, that meant they weren't ready. Since so much time had passed, I asked if I could give him my claim-check numbers, just in case my order had somehow "fallen through the cracks." He bristled at the very suggestion and refused to check, saying, "Look. You have two choices: Wait for them to be ready, or pick them up now." I chose to wait, but after waiting yet *another* three weeks, I decided I'd just pick them up and take them elsewhere. (In the meantime, I'd found two other tailors in Studio City, each of which had already completed THREE ROUNDS of separate orders for me in the same 6 weeks.) When I arrived to claim my unfinished order, the owner wasn't there, but a relative was running the shop for him, that day. However, the guy who does the actual tailoring also wasn't there, that day -- but the guy who was running the shop didn't have a key to the upstairs area where the tailor keeps our items. A wasted trip. Due to my work schedule, another two weeks later, I picked up my jeans -- still untouched after a full *8* weeks. This guy is: - Not forthcoming about the amount of work they've taken in. If you estimate 1-2 weeks, but still aren't done after *8*, something's very, very wrong. - Rude on the phone, even when they've clearly not delivered, as promised. - Irresponsible to leave the shop in someone else's hands without equipping him to handle basic scenarios. We all make mistakes, and you allow for that. But this was simply ridiculous... One star because there's no "zero" rating. read more

Robert the owner makes all the jeans himself with only material and quality that he'd be happy to wear himself everyday, and he does. Then in the back Gunner makes hats.
