The benefits of the work also have shown up in a subtle way--I'm more aware of how much I'd been hurting my belly by eating what and how I'd been eating. I want to be sensitized to what's going on in my body, and this showed me something that had been in my blind spot but which I clearly sense has been influencing my mood. I have seen her refold them and put them away after using them on me. This is so unsanitary, even if it just covering the patients clothes. Who knows where they have been or what is on their clothes? It made my skin crawl. Second, she reuses any medical tape that she needs to hold needles or wires in place - tape that has been on a patient's skin! She takes the tape off and sticks it to a can in the cabinet. Then she takes it off that can and uses it over again. How gross and how cheap. Use new tape for each patient and stop reusing the blankets! Both issues are a major turn-off.

I have EDS, craniocervical instability, dysautonomia and transverse myelitis, all of which have been an ordeal to untangle, and she's been completely brilliant in her ability to juggle both the big picture and small details simultaneously within a variety of rare issues. After burning through multiple specialists, she was actually the first person to suggest I could have Ehlers-Danlos, an unusual genetic condition. How she even knew about this is beyond me, as most EDS patients are first introduced to it by a specialist, definitely not a generalist like their PCP. She then sent me to a geneticist at BWH who confirmed her hunch. She also suspected I have Lyme when no one else did, ordered blood work from Quest and -- lo and behold -- it came back shriekingly positive while everyone else was burying their heads in the sand. She's extraordinarily adept, and I'm only scratching the surface of other rocks she's managed to look under that no other doctor thought to. Dr. Byrne has also pulled together a very skilled and compassionate front office who make booking appointments and asking questions easier than any other medical office I've ever dealt with.
