My husband and I went to see Dr. Jon G Biorkman for an ear problem, and honestly, it was a very…read moredisappointing experience. A nurse or nurse practitioner asked a few questions. Then the doctor came in, looked into both ears for maybe two minutes, and said everything looked perfect -- no infection, no tear, no tumor. He said it might just be from the flu and could take up to three months to heal, but suggested doing a hearing test "just to be sure." He walked out, and the nurse came back saying the hearing machine wasn't available -- there was only one, and two patients ahead of us. When I said we could wait, she added that the test "wouldn't be conclusive" anyway, which honestly made no sense. It felt like she didn't want us to stay. I asked her how much it would cost since I'm self-pay, and she couldn't give me a clear answer -- said maybe "around $100 or something." A few minutes later, she came back saying the doctor now wanted us to go to an ENT instead and that he "saw something on the ear tube." I was confused because the doctor had just said everything was perfect. I asked to see him again. When he came back, he seemed frustrated, even though he spoke politely. He explained again that it could be from the flu, told us to chew gum, drink more water, use nasal spray, and that it might clear up. Then he said, "I don't have a crystal ball to tell you what's happening," which felt unnecessary. In the end, no test was done, and we left feeling like the whole visit was rushed and unclear. Later, we were charged $220 for that two-minute exam -- even though I was told over the phone that a self-pay visit would be around $160-$250 . When I asked about it, the front desk said it "depends on the doctor's coding." I honestly don't know what kind of code justifies that difference for such a short, unhelpful visit. I rarely leave reviews, but this experience left us very unhappy and confused. The doctor might be knowledgeable, but the visit felt dismissive, disorganized, and overpriced. Just be prepared -- you might walk out without answers but still with a big bill.

Now that we've moved here, we've come to appreciate the friendliness and care of the staff - from the always-there front desk personnel, to the maintenance and dining staff, to the activities coordinator, to the health care people, and to the person that cleans our apartment. I m temporarily living in a one bedroom apartment (with a balcony) but I'm anxiously awaiting a spot in a two bedroom apartment due to their Move-in, Move-up flexibility. I was told that I'm first on the list for a 2 bedroom apartment as soon as one becomes available. The amenities here are great. We have a nice library, pool & spa, salon, fitness center and lots of opportunities to enjoy the movies and numerous presentations that are offered. The food is terrific most of the time. We worked it out with the chef. Maintenance and clerical folks are extremely helpful and go over and above to accommodate our needs.

My mother was scheduled to have surgery here, which is already a stressful and vulnerable time for any family. Unfortunately, our entire experience was made completely negative due ONLY to this one individual. She was wildly unprofessional, immature, and loud. Throughout our interaction, she laughing, smirking, and acting with a condescending patronizing attitude while treating my family with utter disrespect. To make matters worse, she showed zero self-awareness and only offered a defensive apology after I directly confronted her about her behavior. The treatment we received from her was so distressing that we ultimately decided to cancel my mom's surgery at this facility. It is incredibly frustrating because the rest of the employees and the doctor were absolutely wonderful, respectful, and professional. It is a shame that one immature staff member's atrocious attitude completely reflects poorly on the rest of a good team. If you are coming here for care, hopefully you do not get assigned to her. Management seriously needs to address her behavior and customer service training.

While what clearly was a life changing decision originally, moving into Vivante has proven time and again to be the best for both. Sadly, we lost our mom last month after an incredible fight she had been putting up for the past few years. Her last ten days truly showed us the incredible "loving care" by so many of Danica Coronel's TEAM. Now, over the years I have visited the facilities hundreds of times. I have gotten to know many of the caregivers, nurses, medtechs, servers, etc., and I have always felt good when leaving that my parents were in great hands. It is always clean and in good condition. We have enjoyed many great meals, met many residents & their families, and created some good memories (under the circumstances). Those "last ten days or so before her passing," REALLY opened my, and many of my family's eyes to the true depth of passion & caring of SO many of the Vivante staff (On the apartment side & especially in The Shores facility). From the smiling greetings by Jojo & Julie, the always positive Vince, Danica & Olivia, the incredibly joyful Alyssa (and mom Debbie), Krista, Ashlee, Elizabeth, Zoila, Jesus, Angela, Pilar, Irizella, Sara, lovely Aricelli who would make mom a nice cup of hot chocolate with a smile & warm words, to the cooks & servers, there are many more to mention. These past years have also opened my eyes to how difficult a job it is, especially to care for those with various stages/levels of dementia. If you are looking for yourself or for one of your loved ones, my entire family would urge you to look into Vivante Newport Mesa. It is a first class facility run by an incredibly dedicated TEAM that exudes passion. Respectfully, Dan Stauber
