This review is for Sutter/the pain management clinic who work with Dr. Rejai. I waited weeks for an appointment for my severely herniated disc. While my appointment went well, the standard insurance paper work for a cortisone shot (the most common intervention other than pain meds) was rejected, and no one from the office followed up. There were no follow up notes after my appointment for next steps. My primary seemed very surprised that this routine procedure was denied which makes me suspect that they didn't do the minimal paperwork required. When you call 'the office', you reach someone at the main switchboard who presumably passes on a message which may or may not be returned. In my case, it was not even though I requested that they resubmit the paperwork. Keep in mind that many many people reaching out to a pain management doctor are in excruciating, debilitating pain. When I finally went in, I was barely able to walk and had to lie down during the appointment due to the extreme pain. Currently, I'm repeatedly leaving messages at the switchboard attempting to try to get my cortisone shot months after all medical staff I met with agreed that it was necessary. If you are in an acute, debilitating situation with your pain, I'd recommend you seek someone who runs a more responsive office. read more

Was told by his assistant to go to ER for the pain. Actually did so and received no help-ER doesn't treat serious pain-was told to go to my physician-the royal runaround. read more

After suffering from acute neuropathy pain (caused by chemotherapy), and trying pain medications (gabapentin, Lyrica) in increasing dosages on the advice of the neurologist, as well as cannabinoid gummies (THC/CBD/CBN), my husband finally decided to see a pain doctor. Dr. Rejai is extremely knowledgeable, up-to-date with current research and practices, a great listener, kind, and compassionate. He recommended that we consider a spine stimulator, a device that helps to block the pain signal from the peripheral nerves to the brain. He described how this drug-free alternative has shown to be very effective with neuropathic pain. After over a year of debilitating, chronic acute pain, my husband felt he had nothing to lose. He agreed to a one-week trial which was so successful, he had a Nevro device implanted (in an out-patient procedure) a few weeks later. The Nevro representative worked closely with him during both the trial procedure and after the implant, with daily and then weekly calls during which he would monitor his levels of pain and then suggest adjustments in the settings, as needed. The stimulator is a highly sophisticated device that can be programmed in many different configurations/pathways of pain relief. It is estimated that this device can significantly reduce back/leg/foot pain in 80% of patients, decreasing pain by 65%. In my husband's case, it seems to have reduced pain by 85% in conjunction with reduced dosages of Lyrica. It is true that the remaining 15% is still very intense, but the difference is night and day. This is over-simplying it, but before the stimulator implant, he was experiencing extreme pain almost 24-7. Now, although he still takes Lyrica (at half the dosage) and is never pain-free, the acute pain strikes occur for shorter periods of time - mostly in the evening/night. This miracle, drug-free treatment has provided my husband the opportunity to regain some quality of life. It enabled him to participate in physical therapy to build up his strength to the point where he was able to have a stem cell transplant. Dr. Rejai was truly an answer to our prayers. We only wish we had found him sooner. It is a shame that more doctors/specialists do not refer their patients to pain specialists. Throughout the 18 months of suffering, I kept wishing there was a pharmaceutical-free solution without all of the side effects that accompany pain meds. Little did we know that such a treatment did exist for the kind of pain my husband experiences. My advice would be to see a pain specialist sooner rather than later, if prescribed treatments aren't working for you. And don't count on your doctors/specialists to refer you to one. As excellent as my husband's specialists are in their own fields, everyone seems to stay in their own lane. If you are fortunate enough to live near Berkeley, I can't recommend Dr. Rejai more highly. Not only is he a great pain doctor, he is a really nice guy! (Keep in mind he has a very busy practice, so it is better to try to make an appointment sooner rather than later, just to get in the queue.) read more

For the last 13 years I have had sciatica pain in my back. I have been going around every 6 months for an epidural injection. This last year the pain has been really bad. For years I've been leary of seeing a pain management specialist, primarily because of horror stories of doctors either pushing too much medication or refusing to prescribe appropriate pain relief. I finally agreed to see Dr. Rejai and could not be more pleased. He actually listens and treats pain, rather than just pushing pills or being the opiate police. I have a severely arthritic hip but want to avoid surgery as long as possible. For the past year, Dr. Rejai has been giving me quarterly cortisone injections which have helped, but he always discusses all my options with me (injections, medication, possible surgery) in a collaborative way. Dr. Rejai is an incredible physician. He's an anesthesiologist that perfected pain management for my husband using Radiofrequency Ablation (or RFA). After 20+ years of a host of pain management treatments-many using narcotics -RFA has been a Godsend and has afforded my husband relief on both sides of his lower back, and he is pain medication free for over two years. Dr. Rejai has been committed, consistent and methodical in his treatment and care. I have been grappling with severe arthritis pain in my feet and knee for over a year now. Dr. Rejai has given me cortisone shots for my knee and referred me to an excellent podiatrist for pain management in my feet as well as to an exceptional orthopedic surgeon for knee replacement. (Had left knee replacement 4 years ago; will have right done sometime in the next few months.) He helps me to keep pain medication at a minimum - but most effective - level. This is all accomplished because Dr. Rejai is a kind and brilliant doctor. He is highly skilled, he listens deeply, and he is tuned in to a network of providers that contribute to a team approach for pain relief and optimal wellness. I don't know how to delete a previous review but I have been sick and secondly there was a miscommunication between a neurologist and Dr Rejai. He's an incredible doctor and in the age of the Internet I should have postponed this review. Nothing is simple and each patient has a unique set of circumstances. He has had the patience of Job dealing with me. I broke my wrist requiring orif surgery shortly after we began treatment. And I don't think my spinal surgery notes reached him- we were in the middle of a pandemic. I would like to delete my previous review. read more

Dr.Rejai is one of the greatest pain management that you can have as a doctor. He tries to get to the root of your pain. I have been hurting and going to him since 2018 with back and left knee pain. At first it was my left knee with occasional back pain. Anyone that have him as a doctor needs to praise him. I had minor surgery on May 26 , 2022. This is the best I have felt since 2020 I could hardly walk and stand up straight I had back pain so bad I went from bed to the recliner and even with the pain pill it would calm it a very little bit. All of my other doctors never though to send me for a MRI. I did have X-ray and showed bulging disk and one day in his office he sent me for a MRI and I want to thank.him for. his detection that something else was wrong. Our doctors have a big responsibility to listen to every patient and determine what the course of healing to follow. He explained what happened when you take to many pain pills they do not work. I am a 77 years old Black Female and he was kind, very thoughtful as he was thoughtful when I cried. I appreciate this doctor in my life. His employer should be thankful he has such a wonder person working in this field. He will always be my doctor. I have been to about 10 different pain managements doctors over the last 25 years and I finally found The Best. He is Dr. Sepehr Rejai. He systematically looked at my pain issues and has given me more relief than I have had from any other practitioner. I am allergic to opioids and all of this amazing progress is without having to use destructive medications. My issues are in the low back, hips and sacrum areas. He looked at low back first and eliminated that pain. Then, on to the hips and then the sacrum area. He also prescribed physical therapy specifically for my issues, which is strengthening the areas where he eliminated the pain so that it does not return. Both he and his staff are always polite and professional and it is actually pleasant having to go to the doctor. How often can one say that!?! I have had rheumatoid arthritis for more than 40 years. Although there are better drugs now for fighting this disease, when I was first diagnosed, the doctor prescribed aspirin and bed rest. I refused to accept this. Over the years, the disease deformed my feet and hands before it was put in remission by newly-invented biologics. Then I had emergency neck/spine surgery because the disease somehow eliminated the ligaments holding my spinal cord in place. I now have titanium holding my spinal cord in place and a stiff neck. My rheumatologist recommended a pain doctor. I was skeptical. Then I met Dr. Rejai. He injected anesthesia into the stiff areas of my neck and shoulders. Unexpected tears of joy came to my eyes from the immediate relief. Because I'm used to blocking pain due to my RA, I didn't even realize how much my neck and shoulders hurt...until they didn't. I pretty much hate needles, but since he was behind me and I didn't have to see the needle, it was relatively painless. He obviously knows what he's doing. He also understands why I need mild opioides to cope with the pain from the deformities in my feet and hands in order to work full time. The "opioid crisis" has made it extremely difficult for those of us with legitimate pain to get prescriptions. I was beginning to feel like a victim of bureaucracy until I met the kind and understanding Dr. Rejai. Despite my deformities, I can now return to the joy of living thanks to Dr. Rejai. My only question: Why didn't I see him sooner? read more
