I've always believed Sephora could do no wrong with makeup, until now. I booked an appointment for a black-tie wedding last weekend, expecting the "full glam" look I requested. What I got instead looked unfinished, uninspired, and frankly, careless. I wear more makeup to check the mail. To make matters worse, it was my birthday, a day I wanted to feel my best. Instead, I walked out fighting back tears. With a hair appointment immediately after, I didn't have time to ask for a fix, and ended up redoing the entire look myself. I don't usually leave reviews, but this experience was beyond disappointing. When you book with professionals, you expect artistry, not mediocrity. I was looking for a foundation or something to cover my face redness and the benefit staff were so helpful! I remember Kylie, and gosh I forgot the other ladys name, but they took their time helping find the right shade for me. then when I was browsing other things, they helped me find a good highlighter and other products that would look good on me and my skin tone. I came into this Sephora on a wet weekend and left unimpressed. I am not going to pretend I am a Sephora expert, but the Sephora stores I've been to usually are very welcoming places. This one was not. All the employees seemed guarded and very wary. They huddled in pairs staring at the roving customers. I've never been in a Sephora store and not offered any help, but there's a first for everything. The store also was a bit in shambles as tho a small tornado went through. The shelves were disorganized, product was mixed together, and they were widely out of stock on most items I was looking for. If they had any in stock elsewhere I have no idea because no help really was offered. Not my best experience by a long shot. read more

Typically I hate to be dragged into a store like this because they don't have anything I need. I have my favorite personal care products and generally stick to what I like. If I do find myself in a Sephora, I'm probably looking for a bench and scrolling my phone. This time was different though. I have a friend who is really into skincare products and I trust her judgement on having already done the research. For Christmas one year, she got me a bunch of travel size items of good products so I could update my dopp kit and try some new things. I really liked the toner and felt like it really made a difference on my skin. The brand is Paula's Choice and I knew it was fairly pricey. As I was being dragged through the aisles looking by another friend looking for the perfect foundation, I came across an end cap with all Paula's Choice products. I decided to bite the bullet and buy the full size Paula's Choice toner. I think it was $34, but it will probably last me 6 months or so. Sephora is more my wife's thing, if you know what I mean. But here is my take... The King St. Location is convenient to parking and full of friendly and knowledgeable staff. They are still masking and requiring masks of customers which I think is smart. There is plenty of room to move about and still socially distant. I wanted lip pencils and he was knowledgeable showing me the different colors and textures. I decided on two. Then I looked at the travel colognes. There was a large selection of glass tubes that rolled on and sprayed on. I chose the spray. Everyone I encountered was friendly and helpful. The store looked organized. It's time that I update my review for Sephora, and it's really sad seeing as they haven't been open for even a year. I first gave 5 stars, but I must have been high off the fresh coats of paint on the walls and array of perfume and body soap. Also, there were 2 years of waiting from the first time I heard gossip that Sephora was coming to King Street. And I stood in line for them to cut a ribbon and open the doors, so those are where the stars come from. There are only a few things in life that make me really happy and makeup happens to be one of them. I spend an inordinate and embarrassing amount of money at Sephora every year and because of that I'm a VIB Rouge. Rouge level is supposed to come with a number of perks including first dibs at product launches, the store closing down for you to shop with other Rouges, private makeup lessons, and importantly, various classes on techniques, etc. This location has had 2 events if I recall correctly. And each was come drink mimosas at 10am on Sunday and shop one hour before opening (or something to that effect). No, thanks. I don't need watered down OJ to put some stuff in my shopping basket. II can do that from my couch. What I do need is some makeup lessons and classes! ZERO stars for this location's utter disappointment and virtually nonexistent showing for loyal customers. This location gets 2 stars for actually being a brick and mortar located in Charleston (and not being the "Sephora" inside JC Penney) and for the staff member, Deb, who is in her late 50's or early 60's and looks like she's 30. If she's working, go find her and beg for her beauty secrets. She's also helpful in the store. The store itself is very small, albeit bigger than the Penny's version. But come on, why not open in Town Center and have a decently sized shop? They have a very small selection of their brands. In fact, the two foundations that I use are not even offered in the store. One brand is offered, just not the #1 selling item of that brand which is the foundation I'm speaking of, and the other brand isn't available. Aside from the above, I seem to know more about their products than the salespeople do. At first, I chalked it up to being a new store, but each time I go it just becomes more and more embarrassing. I can't even ask a question because I'm not sure if the staff will even know what I'm talking about or if they'll give me some crap response. I mean I am not makeup pro, but come on...train your people. Pros: Sephora's return policy is amazing. Ask if they'll price match. Get as many samples as you can cram in your purse (obviously, ask the staff to make you the samples). read more

I came here when I got back and Cathy (I think that's her name) was super apologetic about it and swapped it out for a non-tester product super quick. I haven't gotten makeup since COVID started, and this was my first time back in Sephora in over a year and a half. I don't really know a lot about makeup, and admittedly, trying to figure it out has always stressed me out a little. Charlie helped me today, and he was super helpful, kind and patient. He helped me quickly find the products I needed to replace, and for those that were discontinued, find good replacements that matched what I needed. I really appreciate his level of knowledge and kindness in helping with me today. I've had a couple experiences in the past where clerks were irritated at my lack of know-how/or overall apathetic at other stores so this was very refreshing. While this location is super new, and super convenient to my place of work on King Street - it's not my favorite. The store is not as large as other locations and I find it doesn't have quite the selection I've come to expect from Sephora. The store was not that busy when I visited and the staff was noticeably bored. They started to follow my friend and I around the store. While I understand the concept of commission - I don't think its necessary for every single employee (5+) on duty to ask me if I need anything during my short 15 minute visit. It was too much - even if they were super nice. I'll visit again if I'm in a pinch, but would prefer to go to a large store. read more

Hannah helped me twice in finding products to help my acne spots and discoloration on my face. She gave me samples and showed me everything that was in all of the products and how it'll help my skin. This store is amazing! The ladies are so nice, always there for suggestions or help. The layout of the store is great, easy to find products and they are always stocked nicely. I drive anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes (when traffic is not so great) just to go to this store. There is an Ulta within 10 minutes of my house that I will never step foot in again. Hannah at this location is AMAZING! She always has recommendations on skin care, color corrector, etc and makes sure you know how to use the products to get the best results. For us, Sephora is Ulta X 10. There are 2 parking garages within a block, so shopping is easy for a King St. store. Smaller than an Ulta, Sephora packs a better punch with less fill, more quality products and quality service. Staff knows their products. Service (especially Hanna and Cynthia!). Their staffing is better, the last time I went in it wasn't a terrible experience but it also wasn't amazing. I love Sephora. I'm a VIB rouge, I spend more money than I should at sephora because they usually carry the brands I love. I've used Sephora since I was a teen and I still love it. Unfortunately this location makes me not want to come into the store at all. Every time I go there's tons of people working but they are all standing in a circle talking, they never want to help. I always have to go up to them and ask for help and usually they just point me in the direction and walk off. They don't know anything about the products, and don't do any demonstrations. I actually prefer to go to the JC penny one because they know what is what with the makeup most of the time, only problem is the store there is the size of a shoe. Another issue I have is they don't give out samples anymore. The best way to find something you love is sample it first. Every single time I go in there they either keep their samples in the back or don't have samples anymore. Honestly I'm thinking of driving to the Sephora near Columbia. I'm new to the area (been here a year) so it's not like I've never been to any other Sephora, I know a thing or two. It sucks my favorite store can't live up to the standards. read more

But looking around there were multiple people shopping and one girl was receiving a make over. I have never had such an awful experience at a Sephora. The "make up artist" that was helping me just put random colors of makeup all over my face, never offered to wipe it off. I had to use a dry tissue and scrub my face. He also did color matches of lipstick on me and would only put the lipstick on a tiny segment of my lips. How am I suppose to tell? I trusted him (mistake) and I did like a color he gave me. He gave me the box and I was good to go. I spent over $150, I get home and realize that he gave me the wrong color of lipstick! Now I have to go back, and try to decipher which one it was all over again. Terrible experience for how much money I spent. read more

I know that Spehora is a bit hectic on the budget but I also know it's worth it. The customer service is top knotch and they so familiar with the products. That's the problem with buying your make up on a grocery store or anywhere else where you are just roaming around figuring out if it's actual beneficial or even the right color for you. Quality of service almost always depends on how much makeup you're wearing and how well it's applied. The outpouring of attentiveness and kindness I receive when I have on a full face of makeup is staggering in comparison to feeling like a ghost if I walk by after going to the gym. Being a regular and seeing the differences in how you're treated can be rather off putting. I understand business is ultimately about numbers, but makeup is such a fun and experimental thing and there are millions of opportunities to help show someone bare-faced tons of cool new product instead of leaving them to their own devices. Lots of potential, lots of room for growth! When you get the staff talking they're knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the product and love to share tips and tricks.
