The Xmas decorations by the community were great and we loved shopping at the train station gift shop. They even had a cute coffee food truck outside. They allow food/drinks on board the train.

Run by an inept, self-appointed Board of Directors who ousted former volunteers. They closed for…read morebogus reasons, did not complete all maintenance items they said they would (especially replacing 3,000 track ties) yet they are re-opening. They have shortened train journey times yet kept prices the same. They don't have a solid base of new, correctly trained volunteers to run the trains yet have an operating schedule and are taking reservations.

I'll let you know that if it rains on your trip and you're in the open air car, you'll be getting wet and we did in both directions. Not butt wet, but your lap if uncovered will be pretty soaked. The hour long ride was nice and leisurely and although the narrator hyped up a waterfall, it didn't live up to it. He also gave some history and talked about an old hotel that used to be along the line before being burned down. There was an old oil line that now holds fiber optic lines, the rock "tunnel" and some other named curves along the way. The diesel locomotive pulled one direction and pushed the other the way back. On the open air cars, you sit sideways family style on comfortable wooden benches. The car needed some TLC if you looked hard enough but was fine. We did not walk through the standard or first class cars, the snack car, or the caboose. The bars across where the windows would have been were almost reminiscent of jail cells. In the short sections of the ride when it wasn't raining the fresh breeze was quite refreshing. This ride would have been awesome at the right time of the Fall during the changing of the leaves. I bet they raise the prices then. The train offers numerous different themed rides so the experience can a bit different each time if you want to ride more often. For our open air car today, $25 each. So, $100. First Class was $54 each which also got you a "free" drink and snack. I'm sure those seats were more comfortable than the wooden benches. Something fun to do while in Jim Thorpe for the experience.

It's something to do with others, I presume going in the fall when the leaves are changing colors would be spectacular. They say it's similar to the Swiss Alps, I am not sure since I have never been there. It reminded me of traveling through the mountainous countryside in Japan. As for which train car, if the weather is good I recommend the open air ones without glass windows. The views are the best and you are not pounded with sunlight since there is a top and plenty of trees to protect you.

When we first got there, staff greeted us and let us know when the next train was leaving. I hadn't planned ahead to ride this time, but they also told us there's a park a little ways down that's included at no additional cost, which was a really nice option to have. From the parking lot at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, you can actually see the playground behind a fence across the street. Once we walked over, we just took our time looking at the trains up close, passing the shops, and letting the kids explore as we went. The playground isn't huge, but it works. It's not gated, but it's tucked in enough that I wasn't worried about my kids running off. The ground is tire shred (which I prefer over tan bark), and there's seating for adults nearby. Bathrooms are right by the playground, which makes a big difference with little kids. There's also a Thomas the Train LEGO display at the Toy Train Store (not too far from the playground) which my kids loved. Next time, I'll plan ahead to include the train ride, but this was still a really good visit.

A man sitting nearby suddenly yelled at her that she wasn't allowed on the stage. My mom and sister apologized right away, but I jokingly said to my sister, "He probably doesn't even work here." The man immediately jumped into the conversation with an attitude and said, "I actually do work here." The whole interaction felt unnecessarily aggressive from the start. He was dressed in plain clothes with no name tag, uniform, or anything showing he worked there, so there was no clear way for visitors to know he was staff or that the stage was off limits. The situation could have been handled much more politely and professionally. Because of that experience, I honestly wouldn't come back. I also wanted to quickly add that if there was a sign, we did not see it.

It felt rushed, but otherwise it was a nice experience overall.

The passenger cars are older, but in solid shape. Nothing too luxurious or alluring, but still pretty comfortable. The Glen Mills station is a nice place to get out and stretch your legs a little and grab a photo or two. Not necessarily one of most exciting tourist railroads in Pennsylvania, but worth checking out if you want to ride different lines and are in the area.

It's bad enough that I already have to pay an arm and a leg to ride the train, I have to pay over $3/day to park too! Oh, and to make matters worse, I have to carry tons and tons of quarters. Talk about weighing down my purse! And, yes I have tried to get the monthly pass, but it's a huge waiting list for it and the person told me that priority goes to people in need. So, where does that put me? Grrr.

FLEMINGTON/RINGOES: the Black River & Western Railroad is a dog friendly historic train ride that…read moretravels between Flemington and Ringoes. You can board at either station and travel to the next with peaceful views of the Hunterdon County countryside. Dogs are allowed on the "Black River Limited" rides. The roundtrip ride is about 30 minutes one-way with a 20 minute stop where you can disembark and take a look around, then 30 minutes back. The train runs rain or shine and it was a bit rainy during our excursion and didn't impact the enjoyment. There is no air conditioning and the windows are open to get air in the summer. The Ringoes station has a cute gift shop and some photo opportunities with an old caboose. (There is also a museum, but it is temporarily closed for renovations.). Thank you to their employee, Diana, for inviting us to participate in this unique experience. And, thank you to Maddielyne, a member of the train crew for chatting with us about Brie and sharing the history of the train and the area. If your dog is sensitive to noise, the train is loud riding over the tracks and the train horn blares frequently for safety precautions. Official pet friendly rules: "Are pets allowed? Well-behaved, leashed dogs are invited to ride the Black River Limited train at the conductor's discretion. We do ask that pet parents please make every effort to clean up after their pet for the convenience of our train crew. We recommend bringing a towel for your pet to sit on and other necessary supplies. Service animals are not considered pets and are permitted in all areas where customers are allowed."

The ride was easy to book online but if you need to change the reservation, you have to call a number and it's a guy picking up who doesn't answer the phone with the name of the company or anything, and he's also very abrupt. The driver was 15 minutes late picking up my mom - no notification - which made her frantic with anxiety and I had to stop her from driving herself. Pluses were that he was apparently a good driver and they made it in time but still: unnecessary agita in terms of booking and the lack of communication about being delayed.
