I visited the Strasburg Rail Road recently, but not for the train ride this time and it still turned into a really easy outing with kids. When we first got there, staff greeted us and let us know when the next train was leaving. I hadn't planned ahead to ride this time, but they also told us there's a park a little ways down that's included at no additional cost, which was a really nice option to have. From the parking lot at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, you can actually see the playground behind a fence across the street. Once we walked over, we just took our time looking at the trains up close, passing the shops, and letting the kids explore as we went. The playground isn't huge, but it works. It's not gated, but it's tucked in enough that I wasn't worried about my kids running off. The ground is tire shred (which I prefer over tan bark), and there's seating for adults nearby. Bathrooms are right by the playground, which makes a big difference with little kids. There's also a Thomas the Train LEGO display at the Toy Train Store (not too far from the playground) which my kids loved. Next time, I'll plan ahead to include the train ride, but this was still a really good visit. read more

We came here about an hour before our train and spent some time walking around the little shops. There was a small empty stage, and my sister stepped onto it for a quick joke picture my mom wanted to take. A man sitting nearby suddenly yelled at her that she wasn't allowed on the stage. My mom and sister apologized right away, but I jokingly said to my sister, "He probably doesn't even work here." The man immediately jumped into the conversation with an attitude and said, "I actually do work here." The whole interaction felt unnecessarily aggressive from the start. He was dressed in plain clothes with no name tag, uniform, or anything showing he worked there, so there was no clear way for visitors to know he was staff or that the stage was off limits. The situation could have been handled much more politely and professionally. Because of that experience, I honestly wouldn't come back. I also wanted to quickly add that if there was a sign, we did not see it. read more

My Husband saw this place on Instagram. It about an hour and a half drive from us but it was worth it. It's in Lancaster County Amish Country, it's the oldest continuously operating railroad in North America. They offer a daily narrated 45 minute 9 mile round trip through scenic Amish Country Farmland onboard a Steam Locomotive. You have several Car options to ride in and we purchased the First Class Lounge which is climate controlled, has Captain Swivel Chairs, a Uniformed Attendant and Refreshments available. The ride was smooth and relaxing and the Narrator took us back in time with the history of the Trains. Our Uniformed Attendant Cory was very nice and attentive. This place is great for kids, it has a play area, a Train Museum, Gift Shops, and other things to see and do. So check them out if you are in the area. read more

I came here with my significant other on a Thursday morning to experience their first train of the day ride. This place is nested in Amish country and is considered the oldest running train in the USA. It's a short ride around the countryside (45 min) with a tour guide over the speaker. Although the ride isn't incredibly scenic, you see a lot of farm land and cows. They have some funny jokes too. We rode in the open car for around $30 per person. I sat in the hello dolly train which was really cool since this car was also in that movie! I think it's worth a visit but if you have a busy schedule while visiting Lancaster, it wouldn't be detrimental to miss this place. They have some food options and shops to explore here too. On weekends they have live theater performances. Parking was free and we had no issues. I had a nice time and the weather was great. read more

We went to visit the railroad in the fall and took a short train ride out through the Amish countryside. I really enjoyed riding on the train. The station itself is really cute and was decorated for the fall. I bet Christmas is really nice. There is a good sized gift shop if you want to get some souvenirs. The staff were all really friendly. You could tell they enjoy working there. I thought it was a little pricey for such a short ride but overall a good experience. read more

What a great day out for all ages. It looks small and unassuming when you arrive but they have a lovely set up. Food trucks for the most yummy hot chocolate I've ever had, little shops to look in and an out door variety show. The train ride was very organized and everyone onboard did an outstanding job. We were in town for the Sight & Sound theater and decided to take a relaxing train ride on the Strasburg Railroad. The cost was $30 pp to ride in the open air cart. We did this so we wouldn't have to take pics through glass. The ride itself was relaxing and found out a couple pieces of history about Abe Lincoln we didnt know. The echoing stop was pretty cool. The site says its a 45 min ride but in actuality it was about 30 mins because when you get to the end they have to move the engine to the front to pull you back to the station. The scenery is beautiful along the way, however, where they stop you to move the engine is not scenic at all. There is a marble (like for countertops) business so you are basically looking at pieces of countertop opportunities and railroad equipment while you are waiting. Back at the station you will find a cafe, toy store, souvenir shop, outdoor show, and photo ops. I was a little disappointed in the ride but you dont know until you know. I dont think it was worth a total of $60. read more

I am a sucker for any place with a live show so ai loved the silly escapades before we boarded our wine and cheese train. The ride itself was only about an hour long but it was great. The wine and cheese was nothing to write home about but the experience was great. I loved the swivel chairs and being able to get a short tour of Lancaster County. As a 40-year-old, I finally checked a big one off my bucket list: ride a train. I'd been whining about it for years (just ask my friends), and Strasburg Rail Road made it happen -- in the dining car, no less. Since I'm basically powered by food, I was extra giddy about lunch on board. And when I saw The Train Whistle -- a quarter-pound hot dog dressed to impress with onions, pickles, and coleslaw, plus chips and a chocolate chip cookie -- I knew destiny had arrived. It was delicious, and honestly, eating a hot dog while watching the countryside roll by just hits different. My adventure buddy went a little fancier with the Apple Chicken Salad Wrap and a blackberry bourbon cocktail (yes, cocktails on a train -- what a time to be alive). Food came in cute plastic baskets before departure, our waitress kept the drinks flowing, and the dining car itself? Gorgeous. Think dark wood, green glass, and old-timey elegance that made me feel like I should be wearing gloves and speaking in 1940s movie dialogue. The ride itself was a smooth, 45-minute glide through postcard-perfect Lancaster County farmland. The A/C was set to "Arctic Expedition," which was welcome on a 90° day, and the restroom was... as nice as you'd hope on a moving train. Prices? Lunches were $16 each, the cocktail was $10, and dining car tickets were $25 per person -- about $100 total for two. Not exactly bargain territory, but totally worth it for a first-time train ride and the whole experience. After the ride, we wandered through the Strasburg Rail Road "town" -- café, general store, people in costume for photo ops, little shows, and yes, we caved and bought the on-train photo. This was my first time in Pennsylvania and we went to see the train at Strasburg Rail Road and it was a great ride and fun but short for 45 mins it could be longer. We were at the first class, we got our order and the server was great. We got beef taco and chicken wrap wasn`t the best and the food was cold.The lady who was the server was very nice. overall it`s a good place to bring family. read more

We've been to this place numerous times in the past years and the kids love the idea of experiencing a locomotive train ride. The ride is approximately 15-20 minutes one way and it reverses back to the station, with a total ride time of 45 minutes. We've been on Easter Sunday, in summer, and in fall. During the Easter Sunday trip, the kids got a chance to join a nearby outdoor Easter egg hunt event. Afterward, we lined up and rode our impressive steam locomotive. Minutes after we departed the station, an Easter bunny mascot sprung out of nowhere, and the kids on the train were delighted to see him. The mascot walks through the aisle and gets some photo ops from the riders. At the same time, it was handing out cookies to the kids. The train is authentic, and I highly recommend this ride. Also, don't forget to visit the train museum just right across the street. And while you are on it, I also recommend visiting the Kitchen Kettle Village. The cliche, "The days are long but the years are short," is so true. Spend time with the kids while they are still young! read more

My my fiancé signed us up for a elegant dinner train ride. The ad stated that it was a 90 minute train ride with dinner. The cost of the dinner was $138 per person, then they also charged $29.95 each for the, which we didn't realize at time. Tickets were to be picked up at will call. We went in the day to visit the train which was wonderful. We went over to the station and got out the gentleman told us to be there at 5:45 for a 6 o'clock departure for our train. We got there at 5:45 and got on the train. The train did not leave the station till 6:10 PM. They started serving dinner which consisted of a piece of chicken or steak a salad a few potatoes and green beans and dessert. It definitely was not a dinner worth $138. We went for about 10 minutes and the train stopped. We see the engine coming back around so we asked the server what they were doing because the train ride wasn't that long so as it turns out, they consider the train ride to be 30 minutes they 90 minutes train ride as the time it's sitting in the station because they tell you to be on board at 5:30 PM, although the agent said to be there at 5:45 PM. We get back to the station. Everyone is not even done eating and it's time to get off the train although they told us we could sit there and finish eating. I DO NOT recommend this excursion total cost $344 for two people to have cold dinner that would cost you $15.95 at any restaurant. The actual length of the train ride that they would said would be 90 minutes was a half hour. Definitely would not recommend this to anyone a total waste of money. read more

(For this one, it's only pertaining to their wine and cheese offerings.) I'm a big fan of the Strasburg Railroad. They are the ultimate counter culture tourist railroad company in that as places over the past few decades have trimmed back their offerings and/or run less steam, with SRR, it's same as it ever was. All steam, all the time. We've been intrigued with trying their wine and cheese train for several years but could never make it with work schedules. On a whim last weekend, it was showtime. Note upfront that other tourist railroads offer similar things and they do it only a few times a year as a special train. In truth, the car was maybe 1/2 full which I thought was interesting for it being a Saturday. I think the reason for the 1/2 full is the pricing. $70pp for this is a bit stiff plus they try to sell you on buying a bottle for $30 (which costs $20 from the vineyard) or the glass you just drank out of for $8 or $9. At the end of the day, the car itself (#88 their parlor car Marian) is a work of art but is the experience worth an extra $35 past the regular price to ride the same car? I'm not really a wine person but we were just at a tasting room in a NE PA winery recently and their offerings tasted far superior to what they're offering on the train. Ironically, the thing that tasted the best, the cheeses, are not for sale. (Hint-Hint) Overall we had a good time with something that is a unique experience. The car and the scenery are both first rate. The car hosts were very nice and did a great job cleaning up, serving and explaining things. As much as I like the SRR, this will probably be a one and done for this specific offering. To much dough for wine that at least to me, isn't that good. They either need to back down the price, or push up the quality of the offerings. read more

This is one of the better rail services in Pennsylvania. I grew up in Pennsylvania and have fond memories of coming here in the 80s while on my elementary school field trips. It's been so special coming back with my own kids and remembering how special this place felt while I was there age. When my kids were just 3 years old, we did their Christmas Santa train and it was truly special with Santa, music and Mrs. Claus. There was live music, hot chocolate for sale and we brought our extended family. The train goes through the beautiful farmlands of Lancaster, PA. We recently returned with my kids now 4 years old. This train ride was equally as amazing as we did the dining car. You pre-pick your meal and while the turnaround is fast, they do a good job at getting the food out. There is also a wide range of beverages for purchase from milk and soda to wine, beer and cocktails. Before taking the train, I recommend checking out the train museum across the street, which is a separate entry fee. We've done a few train rides in Pennsylvania, and this is one of the best organized and friendly of the group (especially compared to the New Hope train, which was one of the worst we've experienced). Visit Date: December 22, 2024 I came to Strasburg Rail Road with my family, my son and my boyfriend. We took a trip to PA together and this is what we did on December 22. My family had been on this Rail Road before but this was my first time going. I think my family got tickets for the Santa train, all I know is Santa showed up for the kids, an elf showed up and there were Christmas Carolers. The train ride was beautiful and very scenic. This is the second old fashioned train ride I've been on in PA, the first one I did was the New Hope/Ivyland Rail Road with my son for his birthday. It was super cold the day we went but we warmed up in the souvenir shops, they also had a cafe area and kitchen area where you could warm up. Riding the Strasburg Rail Road was a nice experience, I would recommend it! read more

the place was really cool looking. trains were awesome. we did the murder mystery train $89 a person. definitely not worth that money. maybe charge $30-$40 tops. we ordered pretzels. thinking it's a hot pretzel for $6. it was a bag of sanders little pretzels. yes the ones you get out of a vending machine. also the biggest complaint. you pick your own seats when you order tickets. don't ever ever pick sears 36,37. the speaker for the entire 45 minute show is against your head. that speaker needs to be mounted high up. that was pathetic. couldn't even enjoy the show read more

I purchased tickets for 3 adults for a Saturday ride at 4pm. It was reasonably priced at $25 per person for a regular seat (no food/drink included). We encountered a few issues. Upon arrival onto the train there was no where for 3 people to sit together. So many singular people took up a 2 person seat. My party & I had no where to sit together. There was also bench chairs that face each other and could fit 3 people but 2 people were taking them. I think the staff at Strasburg railroad needs to make sure all parties are seated together and if someone is riding alone they should be considerate to others with larger groups. We were told the train was fully booked. In this case since it was fully booked then the staff should have made seat arrangements to accommodate everyone on board. Another issue is that when the window is half open (which is great and what we wanted) you can't see anything. The middle of the window is directly in your vision. I had to bend my neck and slump down in my seat in order to clearly see the view. The windows did not open fully and we couldn't figure out how to close them either. It was definitely a nice relaxing ride and for a good price but we encountered some issues listed above that should be corrected. read more

The end of December my husband and I took our annual getaway to Strasburg. It has always been a tradition to ride the Strasburg Railroad when there. We always have an amazing time and this time it was extra special thanks to the trainman and hostess. Matt and Elena are an awesome team. Matt was such a pleasure. As we boarded the train he was right there to assist us and made us feel right at home. His warm smile and great sense of humor made the ride so much fun. Our hostess Elena was amazing. Check in process was easy, everything ran on time. We had first class seating which was the utmost comfort with giant swivel chairs. My friend and I each ordered a drink to enjoy during the ride. The drink was delicious but the ride was so short that it was over before I even got to finish my drink. It was difficult to hear the audio "tour" portion. Next time I need to see if they offer anything for the hearing impaired (not that I am, but the noise from the open doors and sound of the track precludes any ability to hear). Whiskey on Rails... disappointed is what comes to mind. Unorganized event from start to finish. The whiskey tasting was good, but the food was cold and served at random. Some people didn't get their food until the end of the 40 minute train ride, which was a half mile trip and back. My wife and I ordered 2 of their signature cocktails and they were brought to us when we had already returned to the station. Rules clearly stated no drinking alcohol while the train is not moving. I'm not a train fanatic, but I love how this is a steam locomotive on America's oldest continuing operating short line railroad. It has a great deal rd character. You feel like you've been transported back in time. It's a 45 minute train ride to Paradise. Pennsylvania that is. ;-) A leisure ride through Amish country in an authentically repaired passenger car. Choose from coach, open air, the dining car, or first class in the #118 Moedinger or parlor car #88, Marian. Be sure to check out pictures of the interior passenger car online to make an informative decision. before booking. The dining car, your meal must be chosen online. Purchasing tickets online is strongly advised, although we went the last week of April & while it wasn't crowded or super busy, you might not want to chance it. I don't think there's a bad choice, whether you go coach or first class. However, I opted for First class to check out the large velvet swivel chairs. There were only roughly 15 of us in first class on a Friday at 11am . In first class they offer snacks for purchase & accept cash or credit. A drink/snack menu is placed on a little table. There are no assigned seats, just designated passenger cars. ** Be sure to check in at the station building between lamppost 3 & 4 at least 30 minutes prior to departure! You will receive your actual tickets & be directed to the corresponding passenger car at the station building! Boarding is 15 minutes prior to departure. Try to use the restrooms before boarding, which are at the entrance to the station, far opposite end of the station building. The bathrooms are clean. If you're doing the escape room, it's located next to the bathrooms & to the right of the toy store. They do ask to show your tickets aboard the train, so keep it handy & don't lose them! Although, the views aren't extraordinary, it is nice to just sit back & relax & enjoy the country side. It was pouring during our ride, but it didn't dampen our spirits or time! Definitely take the weather into consideration when choosing open air seats. Throughout the ride, there is a narration on the overhead speaker. It's informative, but has some cheesy, fun puns thrown in. When you reach the end of the line in Paradise be sure to keep a watch of the front of the train switch tracks to drive the train back to Strasburg (you will see it pass by on the right side of the train/ the train closest to the boarding station). The side of the train closest to the station has better views. Either before or after, if you have time, there is a toy shop & souvenir shop & a photograph shop? The stores open an hour before the first train & close 30 min? prior to the last train of the day's departure . They have costumed actors representing people of the era roaming around the station. Be sure to check out their website to familiarize yourself with special events, holiday trains & special tours. They even do a Thomas the engine train ride! They do have a cafe on site, but it's not extensive (sandwiches, burgers, salads etc). If you can wait there are nearby restaurants. We checked out LAncaster Central Market & bought some custom made to order sandwiches & long Johns & brought a cooler with us. They do have picnic grounds, but it was inclement weather, so we ate in the car. ** Parking is on-site, it is near the Bespoke Brewery, opposite side. There are two other train museums not affiliated behind the Strasburg RR & near the Bespoke Brewing. For the Harry Potter fans, there's a nod to the 9 3/4 platform. Strasburg RR is roughly a 45 minute drive from Downtown Hershey. From LAncaster Central Market about a 25-27 Minute drive. read more

We opted for the car with overstuffed chairs and they were super comfy, and the condition of the cars was excellent, but the ride itself was only 45 minutes, with several minutes devoted to the engine shifting position to bring us back to the station while we sat. Our oldest grandchild is crazy about steam trains and I promised after a previous trip to the museum across the street that we would come back and ride the train. Covid hit and here we are a few years later. My daughter needed the kids cared for due to the county closing school early, so we made the decision to take them a few places, the Strasburg Railroad being one of them. I bought first class seats, because that's just the way Nana rolls. I knew for the oldest child, it would be special and it did turn out very nicely for him! The car was air conditioned and that ended up being nice as showers and thunderstorms plagued this weekend. The boys were hot (as were Nana and Poppy!) but then on the train, they got cold. I would say if you DO book the first class, bring something for the shoulders because the AC definitely will freeze you out! The boys were very excited to get the show on the road. There is about a 30 minute wait for the train to take off. In this car, you can buy drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic along with light snacks. Nana and Poppy were starting to need the drink....lol. Was not cheap, but 2 sodas, two mixed drinks and a cheese platter were roughly 35 bucks without the tip. The trip is 45 minutes and you ride slowly through the Amish farmlands with some cute commentary along the way. At the halfway mark, the train comes around and much to my grandson's delight, the steam train comes around so that you can get a movie (very easy when you get first class to have a place to take movies from!) and it connected to our car. Grandson was just so THRILLED to actually see this happen! Before you know it, you are on your way back again. I think the only thing that I would do differently is check the schedule closely as THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE was ALSO in town! I didn't know this when I made the reservation, or at least didn't see it. When I wanted to take my grandsons to this event, I never could work it out. Now they are a little too old for it, but there were kids everywhere you looked. Luckily, we just booked the regular train. It is not a cheap excursion, but for your train lovers, it's a fun day! read more

The Strasburg Railroad is the perfect activity for the casual ....and intense train enthusiasts! 45 Minutes was the perfect amount of time to take in all the beautiful scenes and stories of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We got a little glimpse of how the Amish live, saw some animals, and other attractions in the area. The trains are in pristine vintage condition and really give you an idea of what it was like to travel in the past. We loved seeing them fill the engine, and all the smoke billowing out. After the train ride, our kiddos perused the gift shop and burned some extra energy on their authentic wooden train playground set. Paired with breakfast at Speckled Hen, this was truly a treat for our entire family. PS: Thomas the Tank Engine does special visits several times a year! read more

Where else can you get a first class ride on a vintage steam-driven train? For $25 you get a 45 minute train ride that you will remember forever. Tickets are reasonably priced for the experience, and they don't overpack the cars. If you have kids, they will LOVE the ride. You can smell the burning coal (which I find pleasant), and hear the engine going. The whistle is a unique sound, and the conductor provides a comforting narrative. The part about the "ghost train" was great! If you don't have kids, I recommend spending a few dollars more and upgrading to first class. Al little more elbow room, and less loud children. Is this heaven? Well, for rail fans I certainly think it's part of it! My wife and I recently surprised our kids with a trip to Strasburg so we could experience riding the stunning Norfolk & Western 611 steam locomotive. What a gem in Lancaster farm country. We are so blessed to have such a scenic, magical and simple place to turn back time and unplug yourself for a day. We arrived early to see both the Norfolk & Western 475 and 611 steam locomotives take turns bringing folks back in and leaving for their rides through the country. After watching these trains on youtube video's, my sons were grinning from ear to ear seeing these beasts in person. Parking can get full throughout the day, but we found a spot with no issue as people come and go frequently. The staff at the check-in/ticket booth were so easy and nice to deal with as was the staff on the train itself. As far as tickets go, in my humble opinion just ride on the basic car. The seats were comfortable and the views are just too nice to miss. I wouldn't bother booking the dining car while you ride, enjoy the beauty that surrounds you! You'll pass by acres and acres of farm land, several rail road crossings, and wave to lots of people along the route. The tickets were reasonable, I just wish the ride was longer than 45 mins! The rail car we rode in was clean, well maintained and beautiful. The ride was smooth and everyone involved in the train operation was extremely professional. The people we encountered throughout the day were so nice and good natured. It was a great experience to see so many different people come together and enjoy a train ride. Right near the boarding area for the trains within walking distance are bathrooms, a kids playground, a general store, an eatery and a toy train store. If you have a chance check out their train schedule, they have quite a few special train trips. We will definitely return! There are nearby eateries and other railroad museums, so you can certainly make a day trip in this area. read more

Took my kids here to do the train ride. They have a lot of different train rides but we were here midweek during the day so we just did the regular 45 minute one. The ride took us through great scenery where we saw farms, animals etc. The guy narrating the ride did a great job and it's actually someone talking not just a prerecorded thing. There is also a picnic park you can request to stop at and they will drop you off there and pick you up on the next train back. We paid a little bit extra for the open air car which gives a better view. Overall, we had a good time but I think it is one and done for us . read more

We taken this 45 minute train ride probably 5 times over the last 30-some years, first whilst we were dating, then with infants, then just the 2 of us, and recently with our 2 and 4 year old granddaughters. I like old-fashioned fun, and don't have a need for electronic, high-tech gadgetry. These were simpler days when people worked hard, expected nothing, and country, family, and Higher Power were a priority. I hope this place stays in business for generations to come! read more
