We were traveling with multiple families with kids ages 2-14 and adults up to their 70s. Every single one of us had a great time. We had a private van (like a Sprinter) with plenty of seating and nice cool AC. The ride to the cenotes was over an hour, but our guide kept us entertained with history and stories about the area. The cenotes themselves were amazing; they were breathtakingly beautiful. They weren't crowded - we were literally the only people at one. The kids loved the rope swings, and one from our group braved the 30+ foot jump from the top. At the end, we were served an absolutely delicious meal by a sweet group of local ladies. Even the picky eaters found something to enjoy. We didn't want to cut it close with our ship's departure, and our guide was sensitive to this. We returned with an hour to spare as we requested. Bear in mind that the cenotes are in remote locations, so facilities were limited and restrooms were rustic. Once off the main road, it was very bumpy for the last 10 minutes or so. Also, lots of steep stairs led to the cenotes, so this isn't a great fit for anyone with mobility issues. That being said, it was totally worth it in our group's opinion. We will return the next time we end up in Progreso!

One tour took us South to Muna, Uxmal, and a hacienda and cenote; another East to Ake, Izamal, and a market; and the last West to Celestun Biosphere and the beach in Celestun. Each day was different and allowed us to see a different area and culture within Yucatan! Even though it's pricier, I like to book private tours when I'm on trips where I don't want to drive myself, because I talk a lot. A lot. And with private tours, you can ask as many questions as you want and learn as much as you can about where you are! The fact that these tours are private allowed me to customize them and to learned about the things in Merida that most interested me! Daniella matched us up with a veteran guide named David, who was extremely knowledgeable about Merida and Yucatan. Whether our questions were about Mayan history and culture, birds and wildlife of the Yucatan, or restaurants in Merida, David helped us learn so much! Our driver Edgar was also very friendly and helpful! And the van we booked was really comfortable on long-ish drives around Yucatan. I saw Mayan ruins that are not publicized but are way better than Those swamped with tourists. My suggestion is for you to have an idea of what you want to see, and ask Polo for suggestions. You won't be disappointed. Polo speaks fluent English, and his a wealth of historical and cultural information. You may have heard of Rick Steve's Europe Through the Back Door. I see Polo as being Yucatan Off the beaten path. One thing I didn't mention in my initial review is that Yucatan Excursions is a locally owned small business. It is not part of an international hotel chain or travel company. When you use this business you are supporting a local business and the local economy. In the days of multi-national corporations I think it is very important for travelers to support the communities they are visiting. You are also getting personalized service that is tailored to your specific wants and interests, and not to a pre-determined set of criteria intended to cater to the overall assumed desires of all tourists.

We then walked through the cultural center of town where he told us about the legends and fables of the area. Finally, he ended the tour in one of the lively town squares where he gave us information about what's happening in Merida today. The tour was free- they just ask for a tip at the end. At no point was Emilio pushy about tips (he didn't even ask about it), he was genuinely grateful for the pesos we gave him at the end. We highly recommend this tour and hope that Emilio has great success in his endeavors.

She was super informative and fun and the pace was perfect for our group of people of all ages. She talked about the history of the cathedral and the people of the Yucatán from colonial times through the Mexican revolution to today in modern times. The tour is free but she accepts tips! I highly recommend this tour for anyone's first visit to Merida.

The run from Merida to Progreso was okay. That bus was a bit old and needed a bit of maintenance,…read moreso our expectations going back weren't too high. The station was very crowded when Hubbers and I got there, so there was a bit of confusion where to buy the tickets and where to line up to board the bus. (There was also lines for cruise passengers and the signs weren't very clear.) We weren't in a hurry, so we eventually figured it out. There was also a waiting area specifically for us, but that also took a minute to figure out. We had a bit of time so I got the chance to check out a lot of vendors and scored some pretty cool (and fairly priced) souvenirs. But back to the ride: we ended up catching a newer and slightly updated bus, so the overall ride was better. The seats were better, the ride wasn't as rough, and the AC was working more efficiently. The trip was more comfortable, so I didn't even notice time going by. We were back in Merida in no time. There are buses leaving every 15 minutes to and from Merida, sometimes sooner depending on how quickly they fill up the buses. So don't fret if you miss one. Another will come along in a few minutes. It's a good (if not a better) option if you don't want to deal with parking or paying for an Uber. Something I'm going to keep in mind on the next visit.

The El Pinar located in the center of Merida is a stunning residence. You can get a peek of the El…read morePinar through the gates but to gain access to the property, a reservation must be generated. Luckily for us, Sonia H created a reservation for us and we were ushered through the gates and allowed to park on the premises. Sometime in the past, this area had a grove of Pine trees. There is a lone Pine tree and how it stays alive in the heat and humidity of Merida, Yucatan is nothing short of amazing. We met Miguel at the entrance and he graciously walked us through each area of the residence. The history of the families that have lived here is very interesting. NOTE: There are significant religious artifacts and art everywhere in the residence. Miguel is an amazing guide. So patient and speaks with passion and clarity. A guide who knows how to enunciate, speak clearly, and with passion is truly an exceptional guide. Miguel is that guide. In our group we had two small children who could have been a menace to many of the priceless pieces of art and decoration but never once did Miguel chastise the girls or sweat out their exuberance as they were very curious about many of the interesting pieces. He made a point to draw their attention to many of the interesting items like the carriage and the walking sticks. These enduring moments during the tour will be with me for quite some time. The El Pinar grounds can be reserved for special events but more than anything, if you're visiting Merida and want to visit El Pinar, please do not miss your chance, and if ever the odds are in your favor, Miguel will be your guide. El Pinar ubicado en el centro de Mérida es una residencia impresionante. Puede echar un vistazo a El Pinar a través de las puertas, pero para acceder a la propiedad, se debe generar una reserva.
