My wife and I were going to visit my daughter and 2 grandson's. We were coming back from Philadelphia towards Wilmington and searched for a bakery on Yelp and found Serpes. I bought 2 pieces of Tiramisu Cake and 2 oreo cupcakes. The Kids loved the cupcakes - devoured quickly. The Tiramisu was split amongst adults. It was also very light and creamy. The wait time was a bit long. Seemed like they were under resourced It seemed like this was the only bakery open in Wilmington. I'll be back for sure. read more

Serpe & Sons is a Delaware staple in terms of local bakeries. They have all of your favorite items from pizza dough to sauce, cookies and baked goods. I like to stop into Serpe's for their cake slices. I have had their rolls and tomato pie in the past as well. On this visit I tried a cinnamon roll but consumed it before I snapped a picture. Decent baked goods that aren't worth the awful customer service experience. I ordered cookies a few days before Christmas, since I anticipated it being busy. I had ordered and prepaid a few days ahead. When i arrived for pickup, I still had to wait in the regular 30 minute line. What was the point of ordering a week in advance? Would not recommend unless you are okay with poor management, rude service, and a chaotic experience inside the shop overall. There are plenty of other options in Wilmington and tasty bakeries in Philly. read more

Terrible German chocolate cake. It was for a birthday & literally tasted like vomit. I think one of the ingredients must have been spoiled. They were nice & took the cake back & I got cookies instead; but was sad as there was no cake for the birthday party. On Mother's Day 2024, I stopped by Serpe's a family-owned bakery in Elsmere, DE. The bakery was bustling with business as folks were getting fresh-baked bread and pastries for their loved ones. In addition to baked goods Serpe's sells fresh pastas and sauces. I ordered a loaf of Italian bread, which they sliced for me, a strawberry tart, and a chocolate-covered pretzel. I've already made lunch sandwichrs with the bread and am enjoying some of the strawberry tart for dessert. Serpe's rolls are and have been the best around for generations. The tomato pie is terrific, along with cannola and a host of other sweets. Sometimes -especially around the holidays- it takes a little patience to shop there due to the volume of customers, but it's always worth the wait and the employees are friendly and helpful. This is just a donut/cinnamon bun review, since I don't eat cakes and cookies. I recently had a small cinnamon bun. This was the best cinnamon bun I had in recent memory. The icing/bun/cinnamon ratio was perfect. My husband got me the vanilla frosted donut, too. The donut was to die for. Ordered my daughter's 16th birthday cake from them weeks in advance. Had a wonderful conversation with lady. The day I called to let them know I was coming to pick up cake, they couldn't find order, suggested I called wrong bakery until I gave the lady's name that I spoke to, then they spoke with her and she verified she took order. They admitted they forgot. Stopped in the other day to get a few slices of tomato pie. A slice of tomato pie now costs over $2.00 and it comes with a long wait and a rude check out clerk. I can go to Pappa's Food Market in Wilmington and get a better and fresher tasting tomato pie for under $1.25 along with pleasant service. Serpe's has went down hill. I highly recommend going elsewhere, they are so rude in that bakery and they make you wait too long before they notice you. Don't know why they should be so rude to their customers (I can see why they are rated at 3 stars). read more

I've been going here for about a year since moving to elsmere, normally I have had zero issues since visiting. A few days ago the most bizarre thing happened. Normally I purchase the stuffed breads with sausage, a few days ago I went into the bakery and picked up a stuffed bread and cheese danish. When I got home I noticed they gave me spinach instead of sausage, no biggie. I called before I went back and told them I'm coming in for an exchange and they agreed on the phone. When I arrived I alerted one of the employees who were just standing around and gossiping while I had to literally speak to them because I guess my presence wasn't enough to be greeted. I told one of the ladies with blonde hair I'm here for the exchange so she goes to the side with the stuffed bread and hands me a new one. As I get in the car I wanted to check if it was the right one, they literally gave me the same stuffed bread back. I back into the bakery noticeably irritated because this is twice they gave me the wrong bread. When I went back inside the employees were STILL gossiping and refused to acknowledge my presence AGAIN until I spoke up and loudly asked "Are you all sold out of stuffed bread or something?" And finally one employee looked at me and said "Yeah" so I got another employee who looked like she knew what she was doing and I told her I'm literally staring at a sausage bread and she apologized and said "oops, sorry the other ladies are confused with which bread is which" I told her this was the second time they gave me the incorrect item and I hope they learn their inventory soon. I really didn't like that last interaction and will definitely check my food, I'll cool off on this place for now and find another bakery! read more

Amazing tomato pie! SO garlicky. I actually bought 1/2 trays of it for holiday presents last Christmas. I'm a fan of their brownies. Not a fan of their stuffed breads. They always turn out soggy for me even if put in the oven. Avoid the place during busy times or holidays. The ladies behind the counters tend to get surly imho. Reminiscent of the Soup N. Episode of Seinfeld. And definitely don't touch the pizza boxes with the pies on top of the display counter. I made them mistake of carrying one to the register, only to have it snatched out of my hands by a worker because it was reserved. No sign. Serpe's is pretty good when you feel like making a random bakery stop. My young son loves all the cookies up front and I always let him choose a few. I've bought various cakes and pies from here over the years and everything has been pretty enjoyable. The tomato pie is good but VERY garlicky. I like their tiramisu a lot. The staff can be a little short at times but it also gets very busy. They have cooler cases with cheese and other things. And an assortment of dry goods for sale as well. pre-ordered St. Joseph day Zeppoli's for Sunday morning. Get a phone call at 8 AM and was told they already sold out and that my order would not be filled because I did not pre-pay. When I placed the order, no one mentioned pre-pay, I went to the store about 30 minutes past when I said I would pick up the order to see if they had anything else and all they had was small Zeppoli's. The worst part of this was the boss could care less. all she was interested in was blaming the customer and I wasn't the only one who did not get my order today. I did take the small ones as I didn't want to totally disappoint my children. The small ones were also a disappointment as they were filled with cannoli filling, not traditional cream. They also were covered with powdered sugar, which is at least, in Philadelphia, Italian bakeries say make your pastry soggy sitting too long. Baked goods are generally very good. But the rude customer service, on multiple occasions, makes it not worth the aggravation. I will forego any goodies from them ever again. Standing around waiting for one of the 7 staff studiously ignore you is bad enough. One time I was just picking up an order. They refused to give me the order until I went through the long holiday line. A 210 mile round trip to visit kids/grandkids made Serpe Bakery part of that habit. This is my first review I just want to thank Monica, she knew I was stressed from driving this particular day, for her people skills in making me less stressed prior to my family visit. One order to pick up and three items to review. The brownies (frosted) were just okay, not bad not good. The bear claws were simply awful. Sicky sicky sweet, no almond paste, and pretty tasteless. We also phoned in an order, drove 26 miles to pick it up, and while they saw the order in their book, they could not find the order and had no more. Probably the first and last time at this bakery. I had heard wonderful things about Serpes but I guess they are cutting corners like everyone else to stay in business. Disappointed though, really looking to find a great bakery. read more

I would like to say, first off, they do have the best tomato pie. I just moved back from South Philly and I must say I prefer Serpe's to Sarcone's. BUT, the pastries are awful. They seem brought in, like they are not made there. Same with the cookies. Honestly, if a real bakery doesn't even use whipped cream, pastry cream (some whipped topping type instead of whipped cream and vanilla pudding instead of pastry cream) they aren't a real bakery. You'd be better off going to the grocery store for pastries. read more

Serpe & Sons is something special. The tomato pie is phenomenal- about the best I've had, and tomato pie is one of my favorites since I was a kid. I also tried the sausage filled bread, which was just perfect. All of the desserts were delicious as well - tarts, carrot cake, and of course cannoli! I was raised in central PA in a small town that was mostly Italian. We had 6 or so little Italian bakeries and I grew up eating their tomato pie. It has been so many years since I've left that area, but this took me right back. I went on to live a majority of my adult life on Mott St in New York's Little Italy and the sweets at Serpe & Sons bypassed the expectations they set. Although I live 2 hours from Serpe & Sons, I will be back, and I'll be back often. A friendly team and a great experience. read more

Started with 5 stars for the baked goods- travel an hour for special occasions and seasonal goodies. Dropped to 1 because of rude service. Do not need the rolling eyes because the items we wanted were in more than one location. When we got to the car we realized we were missing a box- when I went back she loudly insisted she gave us everything- she found the missing box and threw it on the counter. What happened to this place. Bought a dozen butter cookies, a calzone, half dozen large cookies and some pastries. About. $36 dollars. Family was psyched...till we bit into each one. Butter cookies were stale and dry, we all spit them out, the large peanut butter cookie was not peanut butter or edible, spit the first bite out. Calzone cheesesteak was overly salty and basically terrible and we all said at the same time...what has happened to this place??? We used to go weekly for goodies. Never again. Pity. Holy Moly.... I was at a Graduation party today, and mosey'd over to a big tray of tomato pie. I took a bite, and another, then another...and immediately went over to the Hostess to ask where it was from. I've had many, many slices of tomato pie, including some of the best in Philadelphia, and the tomato pie from Serpe is right there. Turns out the cake at this event was from there too. It was just perfect. Deliciously moist with a fluffy, not to sweet icing. I am really looking forward to actually making inside the store next...but a 5 star review out of the gate. read more
