My spouse and I tried all of our favorite staple items in a bakery. The very good pretzel tasted different from American pretzels. I would say if you stop into this place, try a pretzel. I like tradition American pretzels better. The donuts were good- much better than a national donut chain. But, some of the groceries, particularly Giant and the Acme have vanilla cream donuts that would compare to these donuts. The vanilla frosted donut had a different cake flavor/consistency than most bakeries. I would recommend this donut to try. The pies did not come in individual slices- so I did not try the pie. My husband is a butter cookie fan at other bakery. He said they were too buttery. What a charming little bakery! My girlfriend & I were next door at the Running Store, and we just happened to see the bakery next door so we decided to step inside. There was a lady working, and I am *assuming* it was her store. The young staff persons kept asking her questions about how to ring people up, etc., so it felt like it was her store. She and the younger staff were really kind! I purchased a cheesecake and some cookies. Everything was excellent! They also had some seasonal cookies like St. Patrick's Day, and a king cake for Mardi Gras. Everything was tasty, the staff was friendly, and the prices were decent! There was not a huge selection of goods, and this could have been because of the time of day I was there, but I'd like to go in and see the cases more filled. I'll definitely be back! read more

Very disappointed. I ordered a cake & asked if it could be shaped like a heart. Picked up and the cake cost $40 more than a round 7" cake. I wasn't told about the price difference. Additionally the decoration on the cake is not even pretty. I like supporting bakeries. Things have been very expensive. When stuff like this happens it's no wonder people get cakes from BJs & Costco. Now the cake just won't taste good regardless. Best bakery around. The Swedish nut bar cookies are delicious. The pastry and cakes are so good too. They decorated the cutest Star Wars cake for my son. This place is so nostalgic. I grew up in Newtown Square and I have great memories of my dad going here to support them. He loved it there. I need to go more often because it's a special place. Ordered one pumpkin and one apple crumble pie. Both were disappointing and not cheap. The pumpkin was way over spiced and over cooked. Presentation was atrocious. dark, burnt, cracked top due to flimsy foil pans. The apple pie was sickly overly sweet , way too much cinnamon and the pie crust underneath was underbaked. I ended up last minute making my own pumpkin pies . All the guests had a slice of each and the store bought ended up scraped off the plates and into the trash. What a huge disappointment. read more

I ordered a selection of butter cookies and they tasted of rancid shortening. Butter cookies need to be butter based and if they aren't, re label what you're selling to be accurate and not misleading. The almond based cookie was the most offensive as there only stale flour rancid shortening and a dried cherry on top for flavor when the real deal made with almond and butter is divine. I went here yesterday for a last minute cake purchase for a birthday. They had a few cakes to choose from offered chocolate chip and chocolate cake. I took the 7 inch cake. The customer service was very good. The younger girl that waited on me was very accommodating even offering to hold the door for me leaving the shop. I also purchased one pound of cookies . Only tired three types of cookies house made chocolate chip , butter cookies with cherries and pecan bars. The cookies were so hard and stale it was unfortunate for 17.95 a lb. I have to point out that this shop is super dingy. It needs a good scrubbing and some updates. I have been in here before and each time I think the same thing. 62 years in business I guess that's when the wood paneling was installed. I gave two stars for the customer service. All of the girls in the store were helping other customers and went above and beyond. As for the quality of the baked goods one star is generous. 17.95 in the trash ... stale cookies. I stopped in after dropping a package off to UPS so it was only a few doors down. I purchased 2 different baked goods and both were stale.

AVOID THIS SHOP. Cynthia Weinrich, the current owner that married into the business, is UNPROFESSIONAL, RUDE, CONDESCENDING, and offers TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. After I heard about this bakery, I often bought *many* Birthday cakes, various treats, and Bavarian pretzels for my family & friends. Cynthia consistently stays in the back, while having an old woman and a few young women assist out front. After personally dealing with Cynthia, I can specifically see why she Never comes up front...her personality & communication skills are POISON. Btw, when I was last there, one of those young women personally apologized to me and confirmed to my face about Cynthia's attitude, "She's often like that...I'm sorry about that." It now makes more sense why this place has a Huge turn-over of the young women-only workers, as a "Help Wanted" sign is perpetually in the window. In regard to the pretzels, apparently they only make a certain amount for the day. Cynthia appeared to get upset when I would randomly buy every pretzel that was on the shelf. Uhh, aren't they in business to make money?!? What difference does it make as to Who buys them?!? Do they want to get stuck with unsold pretzels??? Eventually, in order for me to get more than just 1 or 2 pretzels, Cynthia would constantly change what hoops had to be jumped through. "Please Call Ahead"... "Please Call Ahead and Leave a Voicemail after hours"... "Leave a Voicemail, but we won't necessarily will get the Message"... This lunatic had the bright idea to call me in the 6AM HOUR(!) to let me know that they had finally gotten to my message, but would NOT be fulfilling my order. Later that day, she decided to debate me, Twice, once by phone and again in-person, about the order. Seriously, this idiot argued with me over the phone for over 5 Minutes ABOUT PRETZELS!!! A *normal* person that runs a business would not deliberately try to antagonize a customer, but rather, he or she would seek to immediately rectify the issue!! A *normal* person would have called at a *normal* time of day (ya know, during business hours), and would have had a very brief, 30 second conversation: "Hey, we didn't get your message in time, but we do have some pretzels today. Should I save you some, or do you still want us to do that larger order??" See, 30 seconds! Naaah, this is Cynthia Weinrich, and she would rather senselessly argue with a loyal customer & make an issue much larger than it should have been, while trying to get in the last word. Well, dope, you've lost a customer for Life and it was over PRETZELS. Grew up on butter cake. Bought one from Weinrich Bakery in Newtown Square. Got it home there was inch deep of liquid in center. Ok, I'll try it. TOTALLY RAW DOUGH AND PURE LIQUID POURED OUT FROM ON TOP OF DOUGH. Called them and owner was like oh well.....never said i'll give you another or refund. I went here on December 24th. They still had springerle and Pfeffernusse. I was happy about that because I didn't get to make any this year. The bag of springerle was $25, which I paid because I know how difficult and time consuming it is to make them. Not sure of the price of the pfeffernusse. The springerle is trash. I can't believe a supposedly GERMAN bakery puts these out. First, there is no embossing that's discernable on the top. The anise flavor is overwhelming. It's no more than an average cookie with little effort put into making them. I've made them for years and can tell this was a slip shod effort. The pfeffernusse was just ok and honestly if I didn't know what it was supposed to taste like, I'd say it was an ok cookie. HOWEVER, they obviously don't use the proper spice, which is a mix of many. What a disappointment. Like everything else, not good. So happy I didn't buy the Linzertorte cookies. Those didn't look great either. I would have contacted the owner before posting this review but there is no email on their website. MAD!!! read more

What a gem hidden in an unassuming strip mall. There is a great combination of authentic German baked goods (ranging from pretzels to German cheesecake and many holiday favorites) and conventional bakery items. We loved the mini cinnamon rolls. We've also ordered several cakes from them. The latest had four layers and fresh strawberries. It was the talk of the party. The only miss was a carrot cake that was a bit dry and overspiced. The ladies in the front are friendly and helpful. The only reason for the docked star is the recently imposed 3.5% surcharge for card payments. It feels punitive for a society that has gone mostly cashless, and might actually exceed the cost of processing (especially for debit cards). To their credit, there are signs on the door and all over the counter, so there are no surprises. read more

Today is my daughter's birthday. I went to pick up a strawberry shortcake yesterday. I finished a slice just now. It is pretty darn good. I am very picky with cakes. I am not a big dairy or sweet eater. But when I do indulge, it has to be worth it. This cake is so worth it. The ratio between batter, fruit, and whipped cream is perfect. My pet peeve is too much frosting and/or sugar. This cake is none of that. Another pet peeve is artificial tasting whipped cream which I did not detect. I usually do not finish the frosting. I called Weinrich and asked if they could make a similar one that day -- they said no problem, took my requests, and produced an adorable bday cake in about three hours that actually tasted much better than the original one! Going into a bakery that is advertising, well a "German Bakery", I was disappointed. At a first glance, not much reminded me of a German bakery, especially all the bright colored American sugar cookies did freak me out. The pastries....I purchased apricot pockets, lemon coolers and Florentine cookies, almond croissants, apricot/poppyseed Hamantaschen. Flavorless, stale, odd sugar cookie like dough taste. We actually did throw most of it away :( Granted I only purchased pastry items, I did not try rolls or breads - I might have to go back for that. Cakes/Torten being sold have little to do with a German bakery. I was hoping to find a "slice" of home her, unfortunately that didn't happen. I read another Yelpers comments regarding people might have an emotional connection to the bakery, which I completely understand. If it's family tradition to come here over generations...I love it, and I hope your tradition can continue. Don't expect to find a German Bäckerei here with high quality pastries & baked goods though. read more

Good stuff here at Weinrich Bakery! This business has been here since 1961! That's some serious staying power! I'm a big fan of the donuts here! Big and delicious, with a nice variety(glazed, chocolate iced, jelly(powder, sugar, or cinnamon coated), Boston cream, white cream. Try the Bismark, which is a glazed donut with cinnamon worked into the dough. The donuts are 1.00 a piece, but you can save a nickel if you buy 12. Sticky buns sticky enough to seal a letter with. Delicious and gorgeous cakes, Danish, soft pretzels, they have a TON of good stuff here, all freshly prepared. The only thing I've had here that I can't recommend is the Rye Bread. It's very different from other Rye's I've had and a bit of a letdown...but don't let that stop you from trying any of their other goods or asking to try their Rye! I love the location, it's on the ride to my parents house, on route 3 near 252...the parking lot is usually empty when I stop by Sunday mornings, very convenient. Stop in for something good! read more
