One of the best hidden Tonkatsu places in Makati. My colleagues and I used to go here to unwind, and vent.
I go here to unwind and think, on my own :)
Tonkatsuya has been around for many, many years, way before the specialty Japanese restos started opening here. What we are used to are Japanese restos who serve all kinds of Japanese dishes. In japan, there is no such thing. If you want to eat ramen, you go to a ramen house. Tempura, tempura house, and sushi, a sushi house.
It's because of the pride they give in the years and years of apprenticeship and expertise the chefs gain in specializing in one kind of dish only. And that is the Tonkatsu we get here at Tonkatsuya.
My favorite is the oroshi katsu, and sometimes I order a second serving of the bean sprouts in sesame oil.
For a Tonkatsu place, I would not have thought that their chasyu ramen would also taste fantastic, but it does. So when I get tired of the usual Tonkatsu, that is what I get.
I heard that they opened a branch near Makati Cinema square and the taste is equally authentic. I would definitely be heading out to try that branch soon! read more
