There is a walk-up restaurant that I will frequent in the plaza where Sesi African Grocery. Being Jamaican-Ghanaian, I am all for flavour. I am also for buying whatever I can from Caribbean and West African businesses, so I stopped in to see what this small grocery store offered. They have all the grocery products that I like to use in my cooking. So, this was a plus. Their products are more for Nigerian cooking than they are for Ghanaian cooking. I still know how to work those ingredients into my own cooking. As to their hot plates, I ordered a plate of egusi with chicken and beef. I ordered some jollof rice to go with it. I will not bother to go back to Chicago's North Side for egusi at an of the restaurants there. What I had at Sesi reminded me of what a college classmate's family had served when I went to Abuja with him years ago. I must say that I loved the jollof rice. Those who laugh about the jollof rice wars may find humour in my assessment. The rice is blooming delicious. There are other Nigerian dishes that I will eventually get around to trying. We tried this place today for the first time. My fiancé really enjoyed the chicken egusi and fufu. He said it was delicious and it was his first time ever trying African food. I had the baked chicken with rice. The food was good, but way too spicy for me personally. Woooooooo baby! One of my sisterwives introduced me to Sesi on a recent trip to Chicago! I ate here twice and was trying to hit a round three on the way back to Texas, but the fresh made soups weren't ready yet I won't lie, I was hurt! The Egusi is EXEMPLARY! The perfect balance of tender meat, juicy greens, a sprinkling of Egusi (I was expecting more) but smothered in stew sauce and you are easily forgiven! We also ordered the jollof and fish. Fire! My favorite African store, where you can order authentic Nigerian food that is always flavorful, consistent, and fresh. I ordered my usual Egusi stew with goat and fish but you can add chicken. I would recommend that for first timers or trying jollof rice. I also had a side of pounded yam (fufu) which is a swallow. Service please having patience because it takes time but nothing longer than 30 minutes unless busy. Worth the wait, the inside is small and full of snacks, juices, and fruits to try. Five stars. Period! Just delicious. The flavors are on an entirely different level. I had goat, egusi and fufu. Never in my life, did I ever think I would eat goat. It's sooooo good. Everything, every bite just packs such a punch. The spice is all so balanced. It's so much food, but it tastes so good you literally have to fight yourself to note finish it all like a gluttonous pig. I always finish lol. Please go! I used to travel all the way to the north side of Chicago from Park Forest just to get African food because I didn't know if any my way. I happened across this restaurant and decided to take and chance and I'm so glad I did! This good was amazing! Very flavorful, just the right amount of spicy, the goat meat was so tender. I'd asked the lady who is always there at the register a while back about what I'd need to make my own Egusi soup (I'd planned on buying whatever was needed while in the store)...she replied loudly "GO ON YOUTUBE" I mean...I'm here in your store and this is your area and what you cook everyday. I've bought the soup on several occasions and it's delicious by the way. The lady needs a better attitude. Sometimes she's pleasant and other times she seems to not want to be bothered. Another thing that is a bit rude is the other people sitting in there (assuming they may be family) tend to have conversations with the lady at the register sometimes and vice versa LOUDLY as if she's not in the middle of a transaction. It's very off putting. Her prices never stay the same for certain things either. If I knew of another place with great soup, I'd definitely shop there. *insert long sigh* So I'm really struggling to write this because the food was good, but we were lied to twice and that's something I'm definitely not ok with. I had heard good things about this place, and I was in search of a new place, so I figured it would be a good opportunity to come by here! The place is located in the corner of a strip mall so there's plenty of parking! So we walk in and notice 3 tables at the front, but they were all full. I don't think anyone was eating. Just chatting and what not. So we walk in kind of confused, two people come out to greet us and we ask if we can dine in. They say sure and point us toward the back of the store(where the kitchen was). We go back there and notice huge pots of food which is always a good sign. We stand awkwardly at the window for a few minutes until someone pays attention to us. They then tell us that we have to go back to the front and order at the register at which point they'll bring the food to us (no big deal, a little miscommunication but whatever). So one of the tables opens up so we put our stuff down and head over to order. I had a taste for egusi so I ordered that with pounded yam. My mom was in the mood for something different so she ordered ewedu soup(Sidenote... My mom is Liberian and loves everything with white rice). The lady kind lf chuckles and says "that's not something you eat with white rice". *insert blank stare and pause*. Sure I get that traditionally something may not be eaten a certain way, but if someone asks for it that way at least acknowledge their request and then maybe say traditionally it's eaten blahblahblah (Additional sidenote. This dish is similar to Palava sauce which is commonly eaten in Liberia as well). So after that she tells us that she has it but that there is no more white rice. Didn't dawn on me at that moment that we were in a supermarket with huge bags of white rice all around. So they offered to give it to us with jollof rice, and I told her that I would share the pounded yam. *fastforward* after waiting a little bit the food comes out and everything looks good until I notice that my mom's plate looked nothing like the dish we had ordered. There was jollof rice, but on top of it was beef stew (completely different, google the pics if you'd like). So we bring it up to the lady at which point she says.. "Oh but that's not what you ordered.. I said I would give you jollof rice". We respond saying yes jollof rice with ewedu She then says "Oh.. Well we don't have that" *insert another blank stare* but you said at first.... Ok whatever. So we give back the stew and decide to just share the egusi. As we're finishing up, I happened to turn around and look as some of the kids were bringing out their plates of food (family owned business). Lo and behold one of the kids has a mountain of nothing but WHITE RICE!! And I mean a mountain! Now at the beginning they were supposedly out, but now all of a sudden it appears in giant heaps. I point it out to my mom at which point we're both highly annoyed and ready to leave. Although I was beyond ready to confront them about it, my mom(The mych more passive one) says to just pay for what we ate and keep it moving. Moral of the story, the food is good, but I'll probably never eat there again unless someone orders carry out haha read more

The only thing that really bothers me other than the lady's attitude is the name of the store. why not "Sesi" African Grocery, because "grocerys" is spelld wrong. Yes I agree with the frican Lady Mrs. F that the cashier has a lack luster attitude and isnt really interested in the customer's needs... I finally found a place that sells Caribbean produce and products that I have been looking for. The ladies there were nice but not very talkative. Many items didn't have prices on them. There was one item I didn't see, so I went to check out at the register. Then I spotted what I was looking for behind the front counter. The lady went to find out the price out back. She started to ring me up without even telling me the price. I had to ask but I still bought 2 since I can't get them anywhere else except through mail order which is more expensive and takes longer. They also have a couple of tables and chairs towards the front to eat the Africian foods they serve there. Since I am not too familiar with the cuisine, I did not inquire about it. I went with my husband because he's Ghanaian and he's been looking for a South Suburban location to buy African food so we were excited when we found this place. I did not have a good impression at first because initially the lady at the counter wasn't hospitable!! I inquired about a large container on the counter that was not labeled or priced and the woman answered with attitude as if I was bothering her!! Learn to treat your customers better. She told me in a very nasty way, MEAT PIES!!!! I did not buy any at first because of that. My husband and I went back later that day and ended up buying four meat pies and many groceries because when we went back, a younger very friendly woman or perhaps a teenager, waited on us!! I really did like her! My only other issue is most items did not have prices on them! I want to know how much I am paying for something!!! My husband loved getting his groceries there though!! I have been looking for food like this all my life and now I have found it. I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago and I am used to fast food chain restaurant food. This is so different. It is healthy, tasty, and culturally unique. These qualities are a rarity in the restaurant business, especially on the south side. The meals are about $10 but the portion size is large. I had the jollof rice w/chicken and the potato porridge w/goat. I prefer the jollof but they were both excellent. There was no need to add any extra seasoning, like salt, ketchup, or hot sauce, which is another rarity in the restaurant business. The reason I gave it 5 stars and highly recommend it is because we (all Americans) need to start supporting businesses like this. However, the food is great and well worth it.
