I stopped by Jewel on 183rd in Homewood, Illinois, a couple of days ago. I was glad to see they were still open, especially after hearing rumors of store closing. The store is open and fully operational. While nothing has changed but the days and its employees, the selves remain stocked depending on the day of visits. On this particular day, I was looking for an item that I remember being on sale at one the other jewel. The products department was clean, organized, and spacious. Checkout was quickly accessible.

This Jewel Osco location is absolutely terrible. I've shopped here for years, but I've gradually transitioned from shopping here to the store in Oak Forest. The customer service at this store is the worst. The workers are young, loud, obnoxious, and they play around too much. They are too busy gossiping and are unhelpful! The condition of the store is terrible. They are currently doing renovations, but even before then the store was nasty, food crumbs underneath the shelves, and mice! Yes, I have experienced a mouse running across my feet! I was mortified! Watch out for the expiration dates because they sale expired products at a sales price! They don't sale many products that are offered at other jewel locations, such as gluten free products, Kombuchas, and organics dairy products. My recommendation for this store is to clean up the building and hire more professional workers instead of kids.

It was my first time in the store. I visited a friend who live in this neighborhood and we went grocery shopping in here. The store is clean, it got a nice organized and well stocked selections. It is not good as the usual Jewel in my place but it was all in all a nice grocery store. Produce is fresh and has a variety of selections as well as the other selections. Prices are fair and reasonable but I rarely saw products that are on sale. It was not crowded and we were able to checkout pretty fast. Staff are also friendly.

Going to this Jewel Osco store was easy breezy. Everything was well stocked with specials so that is a definite plus. Everything was neat and organized as well. The staff was helpful as well with questions .

Now that I live outside of Chicago proper, I no longer have access to some of the specialty markets and grocery stores I used to frequent. Meijer tends to meet my needs when it comes to grocery, home products, casual clothing, personal care products, and gardening. Two things that stand out the most was their gardening products. I had started gardening, so seeds, plant food, gardening soil, and other gardening items were reasonably priced. Being a pescatarian, there vegetables worked for me. But now that I grow my own, the gardening catalog worked perfectly for me. As to grocery, although there has been spike in grocery prices, they were not as high as I noted at other grocery stores. It helps that I take advantage of coupons, specials, and price reductions thanks to participating in their perks program. This store serves four immediate suburbs, so it tends to get busy on weekends, for sure. I go during the middle of the day when I work from home through the week. I have yet to go and not find what I needed. And because I am a very picky shopper, primarily from the perimeter of the grocery store, I have not been disappointed in what they have.

So I asked the gal at the bakery counter if I could place an order and she looked at me and said 'I don't know if you want to, I guess' . I said 'oh I said if you're busy, I'll come back' . I asked how much time she needed for me to come back and she said I'm the only one here. When I mentioned, I tried to order online. She said I don't know why you're having a problem. We're getting online orders. She was not willing to help me. It was one of the worst experiences I've had at Meijer and Meijer is my favorite store. I just said that I will go to Strack and Van Til to place my order and she said 'fine go do that'. For reference this was Sunday 5:20 PM, June 28.

I actually called the corporate office about how great the manager is as well as some of his outstanding employees. The ones that weren't aren't there anymore. Employees help us when we ask for help with nice attitudes. In Osco, There's a fantastic pharmacist- Bill. He has gone extra for us for many years. We can't put into words our appreciation for all of his expertise, advice and years of help. One problem I've had though is calling their corporate offices more than once, taking lots of time, and the employees never getting a hint of a good report. I bet they'd find out if it was bad? Shame on them! Sometimes people getting the positive they deserve helps them do even more and have pride? It's not easy to an easy job and these people do it well! They should be acknowledged!!!!!! There are more great employees there. Nobody's perfect, however, They are appreciated by us.

There was no one manning the department and one customer already waiting when I arrived. I grabbed two bouquets and one mylar balloon for graduates. I went to the self checkout and the balloon showed an error message when scanned. The woman supervising the self checkout said there should be a separate bar code besides the one actually on the balloon from the manufacturer. She radioed over the intercom to get the staff member manning the floral department there to help. I went back there, waiting a couple minutes and no one showed up. I exchanged my balloon with a different identical one and that one didn't have a proper bar code either. I left the balloons and took the two bouquets (they were small so I got two for fullness). Since I actually got some flowers, I'm giving two stars rather than one. However, I wouldn't come back here. They seemed understaffed and the staff there weren't able to help much. And the flowers were meh and somewhat scanty.

I am also for buying whatever I can from Caribbean and West African businesses, so I stopped in to see what this small grocery store offered. They have all the grocery products that I like to use in my cooking. So, this was a plus. Their products are more for Nigerian cooking than they are for Ghanaian cooking. I still know how to work those ingredients into my own cooking. As to their hot plates, I ordered a plate of egusi with chicken and beef. I ordered some jollof rice to go with it. I will not bother to go back to Chicago's North Side for egusi at an of the restaurants there. What I had at Sesi reminded me of what a college classmate's family had served when I went to Abuja with him years ago. I must say that I loved the jollof rice. Those who laugh about the jollof rice wars may find humour in my assessment. The rice is blooming delicious. There are other Nigerian dishes that I will eventually get around to trying. The egusi is simply the winner for now.
