We were directed to Settimio all'Arancio by one of the merchants in the neighborhood. Settimio all'Arancio is old school Roman dining. The space and the servers are well-seasoned. While several of the diners wore jackets and ties, other tables were filled with young women lunching with their friends. I must add, my spouse and I walked into Settimio without a reservation. Our lunch was good, but not memorable. I enjoyed my tuna, it was light and good. Pasta was fine, what I'd expect in Rome, unlike other restaurants that let us down. All in, Settimio all'Arancio was fine for lunch, but I doubt I would return or recommend it to friends who ask. read more

Trastevere cafe where every student and professor from John Cabbot hangs out. Unofficial offices and classrooms. My uncle's favorite spot so we had breakfast lunch and cake! We were looking for some place to eat before shopping. Taking the alley way off the main street. This unassuming restaurant came to view, checked out the menu from the outside and decided that the hubby and I should smash here. So we did,, we entered, got seated and barked away. Whitefish Tartare: With cabbage, avocados and green mangos. This is definitely nice, refreshing and acidic at the same time. Plus the fish was super fresh. Enjoyed every minute of it. Squid Ink Pasta: Spaghetti noodles in some squid ink and pieces of squid. It was sublime. Like hella sublime. Life is good when you're in Rome eating stuff like this. Langoustines: Well who wouldnt order these? I mean,, aside from people who wear real tree to go out, loves their guns and hates immigrants. Because when you pass by the display on the front. I dont see why you wouldnt. We did 500g half raw and hald grilled, because our server suggested they are much better eaten raw. I agree,,, from now on, i will only eat these bad boys raw. The dining setting is classical. One thing i like about this restaurant is that most of the Patrons are pretty much locals. None of the trashy types that prefer to eat pizza and burgers all day. This has been the most shocking restaurant experience of my life. Would not recommend this place to anyone visiting Rome for their terrible service + hospitality. We came to try their seafood and ordered oysters -- they were fishy and one had a sharp piece of shell in it. One of us swallowed it and it got stuck in their throat. For the next hour, they were in and out the bathroom coughing up blood, vomiting, and force eating bread to try to get rid of the shell while being in extreme pain. The waiter explained that it was probably mother of pearl that accidentally got inside when the chef cut open the oyster, and recommended going to the hospital. We didn't finish our food because we were shocked and they gave us the bill. We asked to not pay for the oysters as we thought that would be the bare minimum the restaurant could do to compensate for this situation, but they refused. The translator, who was understanding but lacked power in the situation, went back and forth with the manager and waiter who were both extremely rude to us, rolling their eyes whenever we spoke. They refused for hours, ignoring us for chunks of times, so we essentially were there for 4 hours. After back and forth they compensated us for the oysters but the manager told the translator she wanted us to know that we were "pathetic" and "not welcome back again". The three of us were on the verge of tears from the rudeness of the manager and lack of empathy -- the waiter tried to force us to pay the full amount, snapped at us, and slammed the door as we left. It wasn't about the bill, but rather care for customer's well being and health which this restaurant clearly lacks. They didn't understand why we were upset and were dismissive, saying one swallowing the shell was not their responsibility. I don't know if it's because we were young and tourists that the restaurant didn't take us seriously, but it was disgusting that the safety of a customer was on the line & all they could care about was money, fighting for their lives to have us pay full price. Fantastic antipasti and fish dishes--you can tell the fish is incredibly fresh since the raw bar on ice is featured as you walk in. The wine list is extensive, and the service (while slower than most Americans may be accustomed to) was fair. It would probably get 2-3 stars at best. We ordered pasta an a salad and the pasta was so dente that I had to pick it out of my teeth. Also, the bread that they served was stale and old (although, this is par for many other cafes, only our high-end meals had good bread). I have been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years and make sure to stop in whenever I make it to Rome. I have always had excellent service form the staff and management. The restaurant is run by twin brothers (one cooks and the other is the manager) and is popular for lunch with the local businessmen and politicians. They have some of the freshest burrata I have ever tasted and I have never had a bad meal here. Tourists coming in expecting a tourist restaurant may be disappointed if they insist on American style dining. As a tip please remember that the second is often served alone ( a piece of meat on the plate) and you have to order the contorni (side dishes) which will be presented on separate plates. Also, in Italy restaurants often charge a cover for bread and linen. This is traditional and not their attempt to gouge. Modern restaurants have removed this cover for tourists but it is still common. This is more than made up for by the "leave only a small tip" custom. As this is a true local's restaurant, the staff does not speak English (they are Italian) but there is always a waiter that can serve English, Spanish, and German speaking guests. Regarding the reserved tables, local restaurants in Italy often reserve choice tables for their regulars. If they do not show up for lunch they release the tables depending on the time. This is why the seemingly reserved tables may open during the course of the lunch. Traditional restaurants are fast disappearing in Rome and it would be a shame if the "globalisation" of tastes and expectations were to drive the few left out of business. If you want a trattoria experience I would also recommend their other restaurant around the corner Arancio d'Oro. read more

This was an awful place to go for dinner. So over priced, €2 per person for bread alone. Our meal cost more than a whole days worth of food and was inedible. I ordered the meatballs with zucchini and saffron. Couldn't eat it. At all. I always eat everything. The place next door is always full of Italians and looks delicious. Don't do it. If you're going to pay for overpriced food, may as well go to a good location, better to the Spanish steps. read more

Excellent Restaurant. A quiet respite from the hectic Via Condotti near by. We had eaten here several times but the last time we were here, all of the stewardesses from our flight were dining also. Everything we have had has been very good but the antipasto selection is great. read more

Went here due to the reviews here. Was not disappointed. The food, the service, the quaint backstreet bistro ambiance were all just what we were looking for on our first night in Rome. The couple at the next table suggest the t-bone steak (I'm thinking I came to Rome for a steak?) but they were adament we had never had anything like it. They were right, served family style, it was wonderful. Smoothered in onions and grilled vegtables, sliced up and done to perfection. T-Bone Steak Roman Style, I highly recommend it. Dessert was tiramisu - and it was the best I had ever tasted. Later I found out the resturant was right next to the shopping district, so very convienient and defineatly worht the trip. read more

The traditional, tranquil, air conditioned atmosphere welcomed our family of four with open arms, as we took refuge in the safe haven of Settimio all'Arancio from the dense crowds of Rome. The waiter was friendly and patient, the food was traditional and generous and filled our jet-lagged stomachs with delicious pastas, calamari and chicken! This is the third night of our honeymoon and the first meal we've had in Italy that wasn't outstanding! Unfortunately, it was barely edible. And to top it off, it's overpriced and atrocious service. Service: as mentioned, awful. I've heard that the service in Italy isn't always amazing, but this was a special kind of bad (our experiences elsewhere have all been positive). We requested an inside table originally since it was in the 90's outside and humid. When we sat down, found out the air conditioner was broken and asked to sit outside. They told us no tables were available, although at least 3 were clearly available. In the next 5 minutes or so, two other small groups came into the dining room, also realized the air was broken, asked to be seated outside, and were. I mentioned again that we wanted to sit outside and were again told it was full, but they could get us out there in 10 minutes. A few minutes later, they got us outside, into one of the tables that had been open the whole time. Even before this incident, our server was rude, seemed like we were wasting her time, and generally very unhelpful. When we asked for suggestions, she just laughed and quickly named off about 5 dishes without saying a word about them. And to top it off, not a single one of them speaks more than a few very broken words of English. It seems that they are, however, friendly to the locals. Food: I got the lamb, which the server recommended. It was nearly entirely a plate of fat. The little bit of meat present was edible, but rather bland. The potatoes could have come frozen from a bag and I wouldn't have known the difference. My wife got the crab ravioli and while it looked great and the pasta was admittedly cooked well, the stuffing was awful, very fishy. I am from Maryland, so I love seafood and know crab. When crab tastes fishy, it's not good. We told one of the waiters that it was bad and this started a small parade of about 3 different staff trying to figure out what was wrong. When they finally understood what we were saying, they said we ordered crab so it should taste fishy and told us this was one of the dishes they were famous for. If so, it would explain why there were so many open seats inside. Ultimately, they agreed to take back the ravioli and exchanged it for a pasta with tomato sauce, bacon, and pecorino cheese. This was acceptable and we finished it, but certainly nothing you couldn't get at any restaurant in the city. We got the caprese as an appetizer and the waitress forgot about it initially, eventually brought it after we were working on the dinner. The mozzarella was slightly better than what you'd get in the US, the tomato was slightly worse, the dish had no oil and was unseasoned. Value: They charge for water, which I don't like but understand is typical around Italy. However, they also charge $2 per person for very average at best bread, which I have never seen before and was very unexcited to see on the bill. They didn't charge for the dish we sent back but the bill still came to $56. Not too bad for a good meal in Rome, but about $50 too much for what we got here. I rarely complain, and can't remember ever sending food back, but I wanted to walk out from here without paying. This wasn't helped by the fact that it took a good 10 minutes after I asked for the bill to finally get it, while during this time I watched the person we asked clear a table or two, pick up another bill, and walk around as if he were lost a few times. To sum it all up, one of the worst meals I've had and the worst service I've had anywhere. There are plenty great restaurants in the area, absolutely no need to waste your money or time here. read more

The food is excellent. Wine is great. Only down side is this one waiter. I've been to this restaurant three times, and I always have a problem with this particular waiter. All three times, they sent us to the seats next to the bathroom. Fair enough, we didn't have reservation. But the waiter who served us were not really very friendly, only to us. I've seen him chatting, smiling and be friendly to local customers, but never to us. He forgot to bring one spaghetti meal and he wouldn't admit his mistake...!!! And he said I don't speak good English....! I work in service industry and I know how to talk politely to the waiters. I told my Italian friends what happened and they said we should have left. I know service in Italy can be bit slow, and I've been to Italy dozen times so I have no problem is slow service. (And this waiter is not Italian back ground) But the rudeness, this is something I can't tolerate. Now this is three times. That's why I decided write the review. The food is good, but I'll probably refused to be served by him in the future if I ever go back. read more

While traveling through Rome in April, we wanted to try really great food without the craziness of Rome. We came on the trusty yelp and came across Settimio. We were not disappointed. The food was amazing. The servers were fantastic, they speak multiple languages fluently and are always happy to explain any dishes. Their house red is a reason alone to visit this fine establishment. We ended up loving the restaurant so much that we came back for dinner three times during our 9 day stay. It is a wonderful place and worth trying if you are in the neighborhood. read more
