You know that electrifying feeling when you just arrived to your travel destination from the airport, dropped off your luggage at the hotel, quickly freshened up, and are now wandering a new city in search of your first authentic meal? L'Antica Fraschetta was my introductory gateway to all the pasta I was about to eat in Italy. With its checkered red table cloths, string lights, and charming decor, the ambiance was everything I imagined an Italian restaurant would have. I had trouble differentiating if the decor was authentic or overly cliché. Or maybe just had trouble accepting that I was actually in Italy. I still don't know, but I loved it! I had the CACIO E PEPE as my entree. I opted for the truffled version. So good! That pecorino romano just hits differently when you're in Rome. I also quickly learned the pasta is cooked al dente everywhere in Italy, which means on the firmer side. The patrons at L'Antica Fraschetta seemed to be a mixture of both locals and tourists. There is a bar area as well. I had a cappuccino to wake myself up after a long journey. Despite what social media videos may say, you can order cappuccinos any time. Beautiful outdoor seating. Bread was stale and the replacement bread was the same. The "charcuterie" board, some of the meat was so gross and I've never met a board I've never loved. The lamp chop entree was bad. I asked for my potatoes more on the well side and they were not. My son got the filet with rosemary medium rare of course and they did not have any sour cream or horseradish. Rome is great and a lot to see of course but in terms of quality I wish this dinner was in ny city or anywhere else at this point. Anywhere where you felt like you could get the value, respect and quality you were hoping for. I am pretty sure we ate here on our 2nd evening in Rome. The restaurant was only a few blocks from our hotel (about a block off Via Nazionale). I think the proximity and the fact that they opened by 6 p.m. were both factors in our choosing it. They had some outdoor dining (at the time, partially-covered tables on or next to the sidewalk with heaters). It was just cool enough for us to opt for inside dining. The diners seemed to be largely small parties of tourists. There may have been some locals too, but I don't recall specifically. One thing that struck me about 3 - 4 of the restaurants like this was the interior similarity. All of them had wood bar/counters, mostly-plastered interior walls that had bits of exposed brick (that seemed added, as if there were not actual brick underneath), wall decorations related to Italian food / regions, etc. I'm not complaining at all, but it was interesting. The sameness wasn't quite to the level you'd get at a chain restaurant in the U.S. (like Macaroni Grill, for instance) but they were more alike than I'd have expected for random unrelated places. The service was good. I think we all got pasta (our first on the trip). Mine (linguini, I think) was slightly chewier than I'm used to. I don't think this was any cooking issue, just the style. Pasta consistencies seemed to vary depending on the restaurant. I liked it well enough and it was flavorful. Others in our group also liked their pasta dishes. I think this place had the standard 1 - 2 Euro 'cover charge' and if you wanted water to drink it was from a bottle (not complimentary). That was the same throughout Italy. The bill payment was handled by a waiter at the table with a handheld PoS device, which was also common. I don't recall any negatives really. If you are close by and want a good pasta dinner, this place is a good option. read more

This was the restaurant I'd been wanting to randomly find while I was in Rome. It feels local, the ambiance is warm and inviting, and the food was delicious! I'm a vegetarian, so there were good options, including THE best penne all' arrabbiata I've ever had! I ended with a limoncello that was just right. The service was great - helpful, spoke English, and didn't bother you unless you needed service. The location is great - right off Nazionale. I would absolutely come back when I'm back in Rome!!! read more

This restaurant was the worst I've had in Italy by far. When we got there, it was very crowded and busy. We had to wait way too long for our food and the fried calamari was chewy and hard. The spaghetti al pomodoro was harder than al dente, the fettuccine with porcini mushrooms had an aftertaste, and the spaghetti with bacon dish was mediocre at best. My daughter only ate 5 bites of the mushroom dish. They didn't ask us about the service even through we only finished 2 out of 4 pasta dishes. Overall, the risotto was the only decent dish. This was a lunch spot recommendation at the front desk of my hotel in the area. During lunch the place is mobbed by the locals, but the service is fast. It is cafeteria style - you walk along the food stations, pick what you need, pay to the cashier and sit down either inside or outside. Food selection was great - pasta, meats, vegetables. I had a tritico plate (combo plate with three different food options of your choice) and together with a small bottle of water it came out to 13.50. The ladies at the counter knew enough English to make it smooth and friendly. The only confusing thing was the name. I was told the name is Antica Fraschetta, but it also says "da Costantino". I really enjoyed my meal and recommend this place (at least for lunch). read more

Location: Monti, on a tiny side street. Not very touristy over here, but the outdoor seating area was pretty busy. Food: Despite adventuring all day, I wasn't hungry enough to go the typical route by ordering multiple rounds of food. I went for the Primi only, and ordered Cacio è Pepe, which I found to be quite flavourful though not very Pepe. The pasta was good but too al dente for me - and this is coming from a half-Italiana who generally likes her pasta pretty firm. Overall, for 9€, I felt that the dish was worth the price. Service: Great! My waiter, Luca, was very friendly and took the time to chit chat with me in both English and Italian - he seemed committed in helping me practice, which was totally fine with me! Price point: Very reasonable - it cost 12.50€ for the pasta + half litre of water, and of course, the coperto. Note: the coperto is kind of like a service fee and can include a basket of bread (actually, it almost always does but I didn't get any). Even if you don't want bread, you'll still get charged so keep that in mind. It's usually about 2€ but at this place, was 1.50€. If I'm not mistaken, you don't need to tip if there's a coperto but you should round your bill off to the nearest dollar. If you do tip, 10% is more than enough (maybe too much) - waiters are paid well over here - at least that's what my research tells me. read more

Both were very salty in comparison to some of the other restaurants in Rome. The vegetarian appetizer was fabulous - the most vegetables we've been able to find so far in Rome! I was more than pleasantly surprised by this place. The male waitstaff were extra attentive and made sure I was entertained and satisfied (although take this with a grain of salt, I am a blonde American woman who sat at a table for one... And Italian men are Italian men...). I came in search of fresh pasta, and asked the waiter which of the pastas were fresh. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and spoke English very well. I felt right at home. I ordered the pasta with Seafood, and, I have to tell you, this was unbelievable! The fresh pasta was like an extra thick spaghetti but was perfectly cooked. The seafood sauce was delectable. I had to stop myself from licking the plate afterwards. I loved that dish so much, I tried to come back to eat it for lunch, and unfortunately it wasn't available. I've now eaten here twice and on both occasions the results were about the same. The service was attentive and quick but the food was somewhat of a disappointment. The pasta was overcooked and was very salty and served with an excessive amount of cheese. I suspect some of this is to mask some of the shortcomings of the kitchen and the quality of products being used. Had the food been slightly more expensive I would have downgraded my review to 2 stars. However at the price point at which there are at I saw the food is just OK. I'm giving an extra star because I did enjoy my risotto with shrimp scampi. Although I think my risotto should be creamier, it was very good until the last bite. I couldn't in all conscious give this place 5 stars because they put in a cover charge on the bill and I didn't see that in the menu. Mom's antipasto had fresh mozzarella, olives, bruschetta, zucchini, yummy cured ham and chicken and dried tomatoes. It was very tasty. Solid Italian food. This restaurant was better than any of the recommendation given by the hotel and was closer than the restaurants they recommended. Ended up eating here 3 nights and we were the last table to leave 2 of the 3 nights. Wonderful food, great staff, good wine and everything was reasonably priced. Not sure I'd drive across the city to eat here, however, if you are staying in the area give it a go. Water was tap filled in an open bottle, 3€. Air conditioning was on but all the doors are open so very hot inside, or you can sit outside off the dirty road. Seafood prawn risotto was salty and congealed. Pizza paper thin and bland. DO NOT get the lasagna...they microwave it! And other items as well! There are 2 microwaves on the side counter, which I didn't notice until I heard the distinctive "ding" and then once again, so I looked over and they served the couple next to us the microwave food. Then my lasagna was next. I should have rejected it then and there, but was hungry. Well, it was gross - the sauce was sour, pasta was dry on the ends, couldn't taste any cheese, weird meat, which all left a bad taste in my mouth after only a couple bites. Told the waiter it was no good in Italian and he took it away after my second bite, still paid for it. Oh, and keep in mind the 1.50€ per person service charge they add on, and you don't even get bread. There are literally dozens of other restaurants to choose from, I'm just sorry that someone at our hotel actually recommended this place.
