Swem knows what it's doing, ladies and gentlemen, and that's even without funding out the wazoo like your hoity-toity private school down the interstate might enjoy. If you're looking for a place to work, study, or play, Swem is it. With a 24/7 operation, ODUPD's response time to campus is astounding, considering the office is only about a block away, and officers patrolling the area regularly. There are phones located throughout the campus with a direct line to the department - don't play around to just "see" if it works - these guys will arrive and actually respond within a minute... Some of the services worth noting are the Bicycle Registration program (great if you're a student and rely on your bicycle to get around, if it gets stolen, police have a better chance of finding it for you), SAFE RIDE program, Party Registration for those off campus parties, PA program (patrol aides to assist students and visitors on campus) and also Safety Escorts amongst other services. They're an awesome, friendly and approachable team and are extremely supportive. They collaborate on the daily with students, faculty and staff, and strive to provide the highest level of service. Can't fault them.

There is one gate with a manned checkpoint on the gated campus. I indicated where I was going & the friendly gate keeper gave me exact directions. What I had thought was a small university was actually much bigger, thanks in major part to donations & efforts of philanthropist Jane Batten. My visit was to the Batten Student Center, which was bustling with activity in the evening hours that I was there. It was a beautiful, well equipped place where students could gather, participate in indoor sports & have 2nd story meeting room spaces, The private college has grown in prestige & enrollment in recent years, thanks to the efforts of Jane Batten. In 2026 a major change will come, which is welcomed & applauded by all. In addition to the move of the Virginia Museum for Contemporary Arts to the VWU University campus, the name of the universally will be changed to Batten University. The campus is located on Wesleyan Drive very near the I-64 exit for Northampton Boulevard. A turn to the south on Wesleyan Drive will take one past the entrance gate and main campus. Congratulations to the university on its well deserved increased pathway to the future.

This means I don't have a parking pass so guess what !!! I'm always having to bring tons of coins with me and when I'm spending an evening here .. I constantly have to walk out to the meters to put in more coins in and honestly .. it's a hike when you're under a time crunch. Also .. there isn't much metered parking to begin with ? Sometimes I come here (aka finals week) and there's only one metered spot left. Maybe next semester I'll just bite the bullet and buy a parking pass (it's over priced btw in my opinion) for the convenience especially because I really love going here to study but I really hate the parking situation.

For anyone planning on going to TCC and transferring to ODU in the VB area this is something to consider (keep reading). It's also affiliated with NSU, that's as far is I know since I'm not a student there. The classes in currently taking are distance learning and in person. Now that I'm attending ODU, I really learned to appreciate the Higher Ed Center. I commute to ODU's main campus out in Norfolk and it's such a hassle considering the fact that you have to go on the highway, pray you find a parking spot (parking in Norfolk sucks), and make it to class on time. During the winter times the circulation in my legs froze midway walking to the Perry...it's not fun. If you're always on the go, works full time, and wants to save money -attending classes here is your best bet. It's on the smaller side, two stories, they have a tiny ODU/NSU library with computers and tables, Wave Cafe that serves Filipino food, and you can get your parking pass here too ($124/one semester). They do have people that check your decal so beware! I learned my lesson the other day bc I thought I was being slick parking in a discreet area next to a tree. Walked out and saw that darn piece of paper on my windshield and my hard earned $15 bucks out of pocket.

Also worth noting the fishing pier does not require a fishing license if you want to use it.

Back in…read moreMay when I was getting notices for my scheduled up, I had to contact and inform them due to circumstances I would have to schedule them the 1st of July. I received a notice first that they were coming then shortly after received a notice they were not. I quickly contacted them as their window is from 10 - 2pm. So, you need to be home, you cannot go to work either. No one cared when I called to inform them, but I rescheduled again. The date now scheduled was for 10 July (today). Like last time I received a message this morning and it said someone would be arriving between 10 and 2pm. Then about an hour later another message saying I had to be rescheduled again. Mind you, we pay 30 dollars a month for this non-service. They tell me that due to the volume of repairs they are being called for that regular customers like me who pay monthly have to reschedule. I think the reason is there's not a lot of money to be made in 30 dollars a month subscription when they can make more money servicing new customers and broken systems. Again, I am forced to sit home, not being able to go to work, take care of any other issues as I am at their beck and call. They want to reschedule again not caring that I would need to take another day to wait for the maintenance tech. I asked how I get my money back for failing to meet the requirements under the contract, they gave me a woman's name who would call me back and she has not. I called again and they gave me a Robert Skinner to speak to, and I left a voice mail, and he has failed to call. They tout themselves of providing excellent service and yet fail to meet their obligations to existing customers. I have been bounced around with no effort by anyone thus far to reach out to me. I have called Mr. Skinners line multiple times at 7579984206 he has not shown the professionalism and courtesy to provide a long-term customer with a maintenance contract to call back. I have been told he is sitting at his desk speaking to another customer over an hour ago. WTF. I guess they don't want to pay the 30 dollars that is taken out of my account. Maybe it's time to consider another servicing office. However, I also need to address this with RS Andrews as they should be held accountable. I will be posting on the Better Business Bureaus (BBB) as well to do that as they will reach out to the company and ask them to explain. Well, no one ever called today and since I have no way of contacting someone who can assist, I guess I will start leaving notices online. Let me amend that statement, the support staff who answer phones, direct your calls and submit messages to those who are supposed to call you back, they just refuse?? This will go to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Consumer Advocates.
