What would I do without Seven Palms? Well, I'd probably spend a little more time on my food runs and head to Safeway, but then that means that I would have to climb the hill on Cedar Street up to my house at the top of the hill. At Seven Palms, I can stop by on my way home from school and work. Nonetheless, after eating my heart out at La Val and stuffing my mouth with mouth-watering pizza, I typically head to Seven Palms for dessert. They have an amazing chocolate selection. They have Ritter Sport! They offer several varieties of Ritter Sport, including milk chocolate (30%) and dark chocolate (50%). Their Ritter Sport costs $2.94. They offer Hershey's and Reeses and the like for $1.25 for the regular-sized versions, and the king-sized selections are $1.85. On a side note, don't buy any of the ice cream sandwiches here because they taste very bad. They taste like they've been sitting beneath the child seat in my Ford Focus for a few months. The prices here are a little on the high side, but that is what happens when you go to school in a well-to-do area. Seven Palms pays a premium rent for its premium location next to La Val. Anyone who opens up shop next to La Val pays a premium because everyone wants to be next to La Val. That way, after you eat La Val, you can stop for more food. My roommate tried taking 20 cents out of the "take a penny, leave a penny" jar at the cashier's desk at Seven Palms, but the cashier got pretty upset at him, so don't do that. Similarly to my boy Drizzy Drake, Seven Palms prefers straight up cash money (dolla dolla billz) over credit cards, so be sure to tip them on your way out. At the front of the store, they offer smaller chocolates (Ghirardelli anyone?) for 50 cents a pop. One more thing: this store has everything!! From peanuts to Honey Dijon kettle chips to sparkling water to eggs to Hennessy to bananas to lottery ticketz to aluminum foil, the Seven Palms "Seven Penintential Psalms" store has you covered for life. They are open late and open early. They offer a bucket for your wet umbrellas. Their muffins taste OK. The same two men run the store. They are quite friendly and helpful! I give them big tip. I wish that Seven Palms sold hoisin sauce so I can put some of dat jaunt into my homemade phò. read more

This is a cute little store at the corner of Euclid. The owners are super friendly and always greet you with a smile. The store is pretty well stocked in terms of food and is open till about 10 pm on weekdays. However, it is on the pricey side but the timings and the large variety of delicious chocolate make it worth while to visit!!! read more

I liked Kathleen M's review in which she called Seven Palms the "Seven THIEVES". I am inclined to agree, but there are some times when I still find them absolutely necessary. Usually, that's around 10pm. When you just need that $5 pint of Haagen Daaz ice cream. When you just need that bottle of Whiskey because you need to get that drunk that quickly. Or like this morning, when you are in bed with potential swine flu that's been going around UC Berkeley and you need a combination of advil, cough syrup, and extremely overpriced odwalla orange juice but don't have the energy to walk more than half a block from your house. Then it's Seven Palms to the rescue. And in cases like this, I'm more than happy to pay their prices. (on the plus side, I feel much better than I did last night. Not to worry. Seven Palms is the neighbourhood grocery store for the Northside. You're darn right that they serve a captive market and that things are priced accordingly. However, a cost-benefit analysis may yet result in a positive net present value, depending how far you want to walk to say Andronicos or Safeway on Shattuck. And as long as I limit my shopping to "onesy, twosy" stuff that I need in a pinch (or a stomach growl), this place is A-OK. read more

Two words - NEW OWNERSHIP. In the space of a couple of months, the new owner Peter has managed to take what was once the crappiest corner store in Berkeley and remake it into a clean, well-stocked, well-lit grocery store. It's literally night and day, and this is coming from someone who's been going there for a decade. Where there used to be grubby shelves and dusty produce, there is now clean and fresh shelves and items. The new lighting (bright, like a supermarket should be!) not only allows you to feel clean, it also allows you to see how clean everything is! Talk about liquor? The wine selection, which used to be a real miss and miss, now has Andronico's style paper recommendations to help you pick. An entire wall of the store is now stocked with a huge variety of liquors, from the shittiest bottled vodka (don't ask me brands, man, I ain't no bum) to the sweetest Scotch, it's got something for everyone. I bought a bottle of Belvedere's in there. Unbelievable. As a big Boddington's Ale fan, I asked Peter if he could stock it - and he whipped out an order list from his distributor and took a look. When he couldn't find it, I asked to see the list and found it post-haste. He said he'd have it next week - and next week it was there! But wait, there's more! He even asked me about it the following week, wondering what the "little thing inside is." Well, as a nitro brew, like Guiness, it's got a nitro container that busts open when you open the can - so that can make a fella wonder what's up when it's rattling around in there. I explained what it was, but what struck me was that he had -tried it himself-. Now THAT, my friends, is a vendor who cares. In the last couple weeks he's had a freezer wall installed, for frozen foods. 10 years of suggesting this to the previous owner, getting nothing, and it took Peter 2 months to get that sucker in there. Frozen meals, burritos, pizzas, and sandwiches await! I have Fried Chicken cooking in my oven RIGHT NOW. The rest of the family are just as friendly and helpful, getting things from the back if they don't have them up front, or helping you find whatever you need. The regular shelves no longer have grade-z leftovers from whatever crypt the previous owner got his stock. No more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles raviolios in a can made when Bush, Sr. was president, no sir! Now we have Amy's organic soups, a wide selection of Progresso soups, organic noodle mixes and soup bowls, all kinds of cookies and juices and constantly restocked chips! I'm telling you - if you've ever been in here before, visit it again and you simply won't believe your eyes. Everyone I've gone in there with who hadn't seen the new situation reacted with the same astonishment - followed by smiles as they found things they actually wanted to buy. It's a real treat to finally have a good grocery store in North Berkeley, for those of us who don't want to hike down to Andronico's or Safeway. Take a page from my book and ask for what you want, if they don't have it already. You might just be as surprised as I was to see it in stock next time you go. One caveat: The prices have not significantly changed, so be prepared to pay slightly more than you would anywhere else. What once was a ZERO star "Seven Thieves" is now a delightful FIVE star "Seven Palms." Finally! read more

They call this place the seven thieves because it is ridiculously over priced. However, it is great to pick stuff up on the way home from school (milk, eggs, diet Pepsi, etc.) Plus if you are desperate for something like, tampons, twine, toilet paper, or Ben and Jerry's, they have it. Back in the day when I lived in the Berkeley Hills, I'd probably cruise down to 7 Palms at least once a week to buy some beer, since that was the closest place to purchase Alcohol. Try dragging your ass + a couple of cases of beer back up Cedar and up Laloma when you don't own a car and I assure you that you get real good at studying this kind of shit. Let's just say that if you're living in the Berkeley Hills this place rocks because it's way convenient. Of course, it's still a small Mom & Pop type of joint, so they'll charge you big time premium for the favor. read more

"Food Center" is a bit generous of a term for Seven Palms--it's a glorified convenience store--but the selection is impressive for such a small location in relatively unpopulated Northside. If this place was located Southside, I bet this place would be booming. Think of the selection of goods as being halfway between a convenience store and Safeway, except at convenience store prices. Still, for the walking crowd, it beats walking down to Shattuck to reach a serviceable grocery store (or ordering in bulk from safeway.com, but I digress). The owner is super friendly, a smiling benign Korean man. His wife is there pretty often too, and if nothing else, their pleasant demeanor makes it easier to forget that you're being overcharged. While the guy at Le Petit Market (Northside ghetto) is similarly cool, the selection here blows Le Petit out of the water. They also have sandwiches/potato salad/other prepared salads weekdays around lunch time that are popular with staff and construction crew, but I haven't tried them myself. if I remember correctly, they accept credit/debit at a charge, but credit is free if you spend over $10. In summary: good products, clean store, but at a price. read more

The prices for the stuff are a little high here and some of it looks of questionable age...but I don't come here for strange household goods or dog food...yet its nice to know a place so close to home or the campus has that stuff just in case! The old ajussi that works here and I'm guessing owns the place is nice. And they have a few snacks and drinks that I cannot find anywhere else around town for slightly cheaper prices than I've seen in the past when I could find it! Rude owner with overpriced, low quality items. Our drinks were flat when we bought them. He also has this rule of checking the IDs in everyone in the group you're with so beware if you're going to buy a beer for yourself and you're with others. We were all 21 but one of us forgot our ID (we were going to a concert so we packed light) we parked about a half mile away so he refused us and made us leave. It's fine I didn't want to pay $21 for a SMALL bottle of whiskey anyways. read more

When you can't be bothered to walk to Sam's (le petite on euclid), 7 palms might as well do. Sure, 6 packs are $10. Sure, their wine selection is a comprehensive assortment of every bottle you would never want to try. And maybe even their hard liquor is over priced. But, overall, it's a pretty decent store. They don't gouge the campus neighborhoods quite as bad as some of the places on southside, and it is great to have a place less than 25 feet away selling sparks and johnny walker (still haven't found a better motivation to clean my room). There is no fresh produce here (excluding the deli counter), and I really wouldn't recommend the sandwiches, although I do have friends that like them. read more

This review is for the sandwich makers specifically. I eat here almost every day. I would say...4 stars is in comparison to the other sandwich shops in the area, 3 overall. The 3 ladies who work behind the counter are nice, and the sandwiches are a good deal, while delicious. The bread is especially good, even though they run out of dutch crunch a little too much for my liking. Also, the Mountain Dew supply is not the best. BUT, regardless of their stocking issues, the sandwiches are the best on Euclid. I consider these better than both Hummingbird and Stuffed Inn. The products in the convenience store are overpriced, but they cornered the market in this corner market genre of northside. Also, note that the sandwiches are only made starting around 11 am, and end around 2-3 pm (although the good bread will be gone by that time...) read more

Sandwiches and side salads here are pretty good. I've tried a few different ones and I really like the southwestern-style turkey one with corn salsa and cilantro mayo. Deli food is reasonably priced; everything else is a little spendy. But hey, it's a convenience store! If you want the absolute lowest prices, you'll have to trek down to Walgreens or Safeway. The people that run it are nice enough, and quick with the register except if you're paying by credit and someone's on their phone line. Come on, it's the 21st century, can't you have a second line for your credit terminal? And the $0.50 charge to use credit on a purchase under $10 is annoying (not to mention in violation of their merchant agreement). But whatever. I'll be back as long as I'm spending long hours just around the corner in Soda Hall. read more

Were it not for the guys in the lab down the hall, I would've never known they had such good sandwiches at Seven Palms. And they do have very good sandwiches, especially the pressed paninis. It could be a little cheaper, but I guess you pay a little premium for convenience. As someone who works up the hill on campus, I personally appreciate that Seven Palms sells beer and wine. They've helped us stock several last-minute qual parties and other occasions where we simply decided we needed some afternoon beer. read more

The selection of corner grocery items is expansive and they have an impressive selection of ice cream novelties (including what appears to be the entire Its It family). I want to preface this review by saying- I used to be a bi-monthly customer, coming in for the occasional snack, dessert, or to satisfy cravings, but after this experience, this store has lost me as a customer. I went in after a run, hoping to buy some water, chocolate milk, and coconut water. I only had a credit card with me, and they have a $10 minimum credit purchase. So, I decided to stock up on some water bottles and drinks, which I brought up to the cashier. Then, I asked him if it fulfilled the minimum, to which he took out a calculator and punched in the numbers. He said $9.90, and said no. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! REALLY? Against my better judgement, I hesitantly grabbed another water bottle, with the total ending up to be around $11.20. I was very peeved, but okay, fine. After paying, he asked "Bag?" "Yes, of course," I replied. (I had bought like 3 large water bottles, 1 bottle of chocolate milk- and had just come from a run). He proceeds to bag all the bottles into a paper bag, and I ask, "Wait, can I have a plastic bag instead?" To which HE replies, "Oh, I will have to charge you an extra 20 cents." Then, he said something along the lines of-"Next time." And the pointed to a small Snickers bar, offering me one? That was honestly the last straw. I left fuming with a ripped paper bag filled with bottles. Judging from what happened, the cashier took advantage of my dehydrated state and leveraged me for more money, which speaks to the type of store it is. The prices of individual items in the store are already very elevated. The place itself is not clean and very disorganized. I would recommend Safeway or basically ANYWHERE ELSE but here. Though some may say distance is an issue, the quality, price, and service is far superior to this location. I have vowed to never return here. read more

Good selection of drinks. Prices are a bit high, less so on the drinks, more so on the food items so be careful what you buy. So-so wine and beer selection but the real thing you need to know is they carry liquor. There are a few other stores that carry alcohol around campus but many of them only carry beer/wine and NOT liquor, so this is a spot to keep on your radar if you're into that. read more

I have tried every single restaurant in Euclid in order to develop a lunch routine and eventually decided to go steady with The Hummingbird Cafe for over half a year. One day I noticed that this seemingly ordinary corner store had a sign out front advertising its deli. That is when my affair began... The sandwiches are extremely high quality and they have a large selection. They always have three women making them, so service is fast. The beauty of this deli is that it's a well stocked corner store, so there are hundreds of different drinks you can buy at a low price and a huge variety of chips for $1.00 each. I'm sorry Hummingbird Cafe, but you just can't satisfy my needs anymore. I gather that this place used to be a crappy corner store but now has new (very friendly) owners? It is kind of unfair for the new Seven Palms to be tarnished by people's bad experiences with the previous owners. read more

The deli here is awesome! You can get a sandwich and 2 side salads for around $6. The portions are pretty generous; I usually have half for lunch and half for later. They have a wide variety of salads and sandwich materials (several different breads, meats, cheeses, veggies... i dunno how many combinations you can come up with but it's a lot!) And they have pre-made sandwiches if you're in a rush! My salads of choice are the Bean Salad which has a variety of beans, corn, green bell pepper, and carrots, and the Greek Salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and feta cheese... breath-tastic! This place charges up to twice as much as Walgreens does for the same products. A large breyer's ice cream at Walgreen is around $6, while the same ice cream at seven palms is around $9. There is NO REASON produces there should be so expensive, especially since I see people in there all the time just because it's the only corner store in that area. Also I've noticed that the man who works there ALWAYS closes this little gate at the counter where the liquor is, as if I were going to steal it???!!! I had to come in and second that the place has changed *a lot* under new ownership. Its clean, has a much better selection, and slightly better prices. They even have a deli counter with your standard fare, as well as some special sandwiches. I had a turkey sandwich with this southwestern corn slaw with a tiny bit of bite to it. Not too big, but really tasty, and at prices that are the same as Hummingbird Cafe and Stuffed Inn. So, if its a warm day out and you were going to take your lunch outside anyway, or you are bringing food back to the office, the Seven Palms Deli counter could be a nice change of pace! read more

5 stars for their fresh grilled chicken sandwich with all the fixins. At under $6 it's a good deal too. I had the grilled chicken my first time there, and I haven't tried anything else. There's no need. The chicken is usually still warm around lunch time! Yum. Their side salads aren't bad either. 2 stars for their prices on other market-like stuff. The people working in this little store are generally very nice and helpful. If you live on Northside and don't have a car this place has everything for your shopping needs. The aisles are well stocked with toiletries, packaged foods, household items, and alcohol. One of my neighbors refers to this place as the "store of desperation". She believes that you shop here for toilet paper, tissues, or batteries only if you didn't have any other choice. I guess it's kind of true since the prices are a little high. read more
