We stopped by on Saturday to grab a couple of things for a seafood boil for a birthday party. The staff greeted us immediately and they were upbeat throughout the entire process. The shrimp and mussels that we purchased were of great quality and the price point was reasonable. I have been an enormous fan of this place for years. It's an outstanding seafood market and my go to spot when I want great fresh seafood. Their quality is absolutely first rate. You will never go to this store and smell any fish smells inside at all because it's as fresh as you can get it and their display cases are impeccably clean. Their fish fillet skills are outstanding. During the salmon season, they fly in whole salmon on ice and fillet it and place it in their display cabinets. Their Copper River Sockeye salmon fillets are stunning examples of the freshness they provide. The fillets are beautiful and glistening with freshness when they're displayed. I also love that they have unique and absolutely delicious fish from time to time that you rarely see such as Pompano, Triple Tail, and Golden Tilefish. Their service is friendly and they do an awesome job of packing your fresh bought seafood on ice for your trip home. If you want seafood any fresher than this, you are going to have to catch it yourself! They also have outstanding fresh oysters and a great assortment of shrimp varieties and even some homemade items such as West Indies Salad. Their fish is not the cheapest but the best never is. You owe it to yourself to visit this place! read more

Seafood markets in Birmingham are tricky. We are close enough to the coast that we can get a lot of things fresh. But far enough, that the prices are a little higher than right on the coast. All of that said, this scaling is based on Birmingham seafood markets. And Sexton's is one of the best. First of all, the staff is extremely efficient and friendly. Can't ask for much better. Second, the seafood is always great. They will cut to any size you like and make sure that anything they put out is worth buying. Most recently I went in to order a "sack" of oysters. Which turned out to be 100 count box. But I am good with that. I was assuming that when I ordered they would be Apalachicola oysters and more on the big side. I wanted bigger one's in particular so I could do good chargrilled oysters. They ended up being gulf coast oysters. So I called them up and they told me to stop back by and they would trade out half or all of them for the Apalachicolas that they had. Very accommodating. I inquired about Louisiana oysters and he said they can definitely get them with enough notice. They are running a fine store right here in Cahaba Heights with great seafood. Fresh seafood. Whatever you want is here. Crawfish meat, crab cakes, shrimp, salmon, etc. Also note this seafood is fresh and not your typical grocery store pricing. For instance a single crab cake here is $11.00. I got a point of fresh crawfish meat for $18.00. A little pricey for me but this location was recommended to me so I figured why not. read more

OMG - I am beside myself with joy to find that Sexton's is still operating! When we lived in Birmingham, my daughter and I treated ourselves to Alaskan King Crab legs from Sexton's monthly! In 2006 we moved to Georgia, and searched a long time before discovering The Dekalb Farmer's Market where we could get the huge Alaskan King Crab legs we used to buy at Sexton's. But Sexton's warm customer service couldn't be matched. If Sexton's is anything like they were years ago, they'll delight you with friendly and knowledgeable customer service, "aim to please" salesmanship, and great seafood! For me, nobody does it like Sexton's! Following the initial pandemic outbreak, I thought I'd read somewhere that they'd gone out of business. But I'm ecstatic to know they're still operating, still making customers happy, and still serving up the kind of quality that would make the 3-hour drive from Georgia back to Birmingham worthwhile for me! Picked up some live crawfish here on weekend. The size was excellent and meat good after cooking.

We picked up some head-on shrimp to fry this afternoon and the shrimp was so fresh, I had to leave a review. The shrimp was just as fresh (or more) than what you would find at a market on the coast. My Goodness! What an incredible establishment! I was taken aback at how delightful the interior was. My pater is from Greece and had his own fish market. Since then I have never enjoyed any of my experiences in a fish market until this fine afternoon. The workers gave me a warm welcome when I crossed the threshold. It was a very light day today, as all I needed was some of Chef Paul Prudhomme's Magic Pepper Sauce. Both of the young gentlemen at the counter worked diligently to assist me with my purchase. I can always count on Sexton's to have anything I want at any time, and the freshest selection of it. Face it, we live in a great place for seafood. Most everything you get here was caught on a boat just a day or so ago. You can always count on fresh seafood from Sexton's and the prices aren't really that bad considering what the have to offer (ie, consider the time it takes you to drive to the beach and back - none less than 8hours). This family run business is all about service, too. They are so very friendly every time you walk in, never forgetting who their customers are. They have a great selection of all "lumps" of crab so your crabcakes are PERFECT every time with a mix of fresh claw meat and jumbo. Don't want to make your own? Well, they have freshly made crabcakes for you in their case. They also have a good selection of soups and gumbos and all the spices needed to make your fish fry, shrimp boil, or your french country mussels dinner fabulous! Some things I can't readily find in my favorite gro sto. Sexton's is the only way to go if you're cooking seafood tonight. Get some extra hot sauce - What time shall we be there? read more

While I love the quality of the seafood I was disappointed this week to find they have started adding a service charge if you use your credit card. I have a problem with this. Credit card fees are the cost of doing business. The cost is built into the product. When purchasing such large amounts it is inconvenient to carry that much cash. While I was always impressed with the customer service this is a slap in the face to loyal customers. I will find another place to buy seafood. read more

This is a family owned business with locations in Destin and Birmingham. They get fresh seafood on the coast. This is the best fish market in my 50 mile radius commute, and there are a few others. You walk into the place and it is CLEAN, smells fresh(in a seafood market no doubt), esthetically pleasing to the eye. But the food, ahhhhh, the food, is always great. The seafood is clean, prepared, and fresh. Their prepared recipes of soups, salads, stews, pickled shrimp, gumbos and much more are DELICIOUS. I love this place. This is my go to place in Birmingham. Their seafood is always fresh, top notch in every way. They carry a wide variety. The jumbo lump crab is excellent. I was just there this week and decided to try their homemade pickled shrimp, DELICIOUS! I purchased fresh pompano this week, first of the season. Other items I tend to purchase, scamp, grouper, shrimp, sea scallops ( these are amazing). I was in last week and they had fresh halibut which was some of the best I have ever eaten. Their service is friendly and helpful. They are proud of their excellent reputation and take pride in their products. I HIGHLY recommend Sexton's, you get excellent quality for a fair price. This is a family owned business and it shows in the quality of their products and excellent level of service. You just won't find better fresh seafood anywhere inland. I dont give many fives...but this place deserves it also the meat market next door. My family and i were in Montgomery Al for a football game, being that i live outside of Nashville i try and get some fresh seafood while close to the coast. Tried the Montgomery area before we left for home. I am sorry to say that every market i walked in smelled like rotten fish and the options were severely limited. We got caught in a huge traffic jam that we had to take other routes back to Nashville. My lovely wife kept looking online and Sexton was on our route to avoid the traffic area. I walked in and said loudly this is what a fish market is supposed to look like. The place was extremely clean and a nice lady and a your man took my cooler and order and packed it in ice for the trip home. By the way i purchased two whole red snappers, alligator, 3 lbs of huge shrimp and some red snapper filets. This was some of the freshest and tastiest seafood. We will be going back to Birmingham in a few weeks i will have cooler in hand and ready for a restock. You have made a customer for life when i am in the area. read more
