I wish they had longer hours because I love this store. I wish they stayed open until 10 p.m., as it would make shopping much more convenient. Outside of that, I have no complaints. They have some of the best prepared foods you'll find at a grocery store in Birmingham. The daily deals are also fantastic. I especially love the $5-per-pound wings on Fridays and the $5 pizzas on Tuesdays--honestly, I love all of the $5 deals! They really come in handy when I'm trying to stick to a budget. The bakery is also amazing, especially the 3-for-$12 dessert deal. The staff is always kind, friendly, and ready to help. The store has always been clean every time I've visited, and it has a pleasant atmosphere that makes shopping enjoyable. I love The Fresh Market. Growing up, my family lived right by the original one in North Carolina and we went all the time. They just have great stuff and some of the best quality meat in town. I'd recently heard about the $5 Thursday bistro meal deal, and was reminded to check it out. I'll be back on a Thursday! Today, I took home some sushi for lunch. Prices are the exact same as sushi from The Pig or Publix, but the sushi is so much better looking and tasting. The salmon and avocado roll was fantastic. The dairy section is small, but I should probably eat less dairy anyway. I enjoy walking around and seeing all the fun packaging (I tell myself I'm not falling for marketing gimmicks, just appreciating good design). The had some chicken breast and coffee creamer on BOGO free deals that I scooped up. The people at the check-out lines are always so nice. Ordered the Valentine's Day Signature Meal kit-- we chose the one with sea bass cakes and filet mignon, asparagus and mashed potatoes sides, two heart shaped chocolate cheesecake things and a bunch of roses. Pick up was simple at the deli counter with one lady running back and forth with each person in line. The sea bass cakes had minimal pieces of fish, the filet mignon that I sous vide at 135 and seared tasted gamey and bloody. The asparagus came in a bag to be microwaved and the mashed potatoes just needed to be warmed. Wished the asparagus were actually prepped with the ends removed. Not sure if my husband and I will do this again. Will probably piece meal the parts together and prep the meat and veggies appropriately since we have to cook it all anyway. I think this is my first time in this store and I was impressed with the setup and well organized setups. It's been here a long time. I just don't live close by. I came here for the Tuesday $5 pizzas. My daughter requested a pepperoni and I got the 3 meat 12inch. The pizzas were made and cut right in front of you. The gentleman that took my order and made my pizza was fast and courteous. Other workers in the store spoke as well. Very nice store. I do recommend a visit. read more

I really miss living closer to a fresh market. I popped in today while running errands to get lunch. Best tasting arugula in town and sells out quick. I've been here often and twice the people checking you out when you pay are not courteous. They are defensive. One time I said "oh you're so nice and friendly" And the person responded. We're **always**nice. In a defensive tone. I was making a sincere compliment. Today was the last day I will ever set foot in that store. The person checking me out needed at the leaves on the herbs I bought. I was trying to help them out and said "oh should I have labeled those like I do in sprouts?"Their answer was "I CAN read." So rude and a bit aggressive. I was trying to helpful and we could've had a nice short exchange, but that is seldom possible at this fresh market. I'm going to call or write to the manager. Lorre Barnes. This a great store with healthy, fresh options for a reasonable cost. I come about twice a month to get the roasted chicken salad and croissants. Which are both great. I even dared to try the Waldorf chicken salad with grapes and loved it. The staff are always smiling and eager to help. They learn their customers and make you feel le they are happy to see you. The samples have been to die for. I'm a simple girl that loves a good sample and they offer anything friggin grady cuts of beef to peel tenderloin, roasted asparagus, and so many other things. I like their wine and craft beer selection, although I would love to see more sour beers offered. Lastly, they always have the most beautiful fresh flowers. My fiancé and I stumbled upon this store by accident. DSW wasn't open and we didn't want to stand out on sidewalk waiting, so we thought we'd use the time to peruse the aisles of Fresh Market. What a neat store! A lot of specialty foods at good prices. And then we found the Little Big Meals. Complete meals (including dessert) for 4 people for $20. For us that equals 2 meals each! I really liked the "bulk" bins of nuts and chocolate and popcorn and whatnot that made it easy to find some yummy options. Dried okra? Sure, why not! Once I had that out of the way, I took some time to walk the rest of the store. Great cheese stock. Eggs. Meat. Produce. Super selections. Yes, some of it was a little spendy. But not all of it. Hands down one of the nicest grocery stores I've ever had the opportunity to visit. I found this store to be quite stunning... call me a small town country girl or whatever but I have visited and or lived in large cities such as Atlanta, Memphis, Dallas, Chicago. New York, etc... And this still is one of the nicest stores I have ever visited. Its definately in the top 3 of my all time favorite stores.. Ever. Everything from the layout to the selection of groceries to the furnishings and decorations are all top notch and unique.. "Unique" - This store is definately Unique. The cashiers and store personnel were not the friendliest. My cashier definitely wasnt. She wasn't mean or anything. Just indifferent and rushed. (The receipt didnt have her name but I later found out her name was Jenny.. I checked out on 8/14/2019 at 12:40 pm). After walking around and admiring the store I decided to buy lunch and I ended up purchasing lunch. I ordered the baked potatoes with brussel sprouts and baked chicken. It was delicious! Eating healthy definitely comes with a cost since everyone knows that living a healthy lifestyle is expensive. What I like about these types of grocery stores is the fact that every food item they carry doesn't have any artificial flavor (so I hope) or preservative. I'm a huge ginger ale type of guy, but lately, the ones at an average groceries doesn't seem to taste as good anymore. I was out in the area and just figured that I'll stop in to browse around. I like how the inside isn't as lit up with bright lights and it definitely has a cozy atmosphere while shopping. What caught my curiosity is the Q Spectacular ginger ale and regardless of the price, I went on and purchase a bottle anyway. Checking out wasn't a problem and at least they still have cashier to ring you up, unlike most places. As for the product I've purchase, let just say I'll be back for another bottle. read more

I really want to give this store 5 stars because I love shopping here. The food in the deli is tasty, the produce is always fresh, and they have a large selection of wine. I stopped in tonight to browse and grab a bottle of wine. I saw the deal they have where you can get a meal already put together for $15 and all you have to do is heat it up. I'm all for meals like this so I decide to take a picture etc... As I was leaving the produce section I was stopped by an associate that was cleaning the floor who told me that I couldn't take pictures..... I said excuse because of course I couldn't have heard her correctly. She said it again, that I couldn't take pictures. I asked why and her exact words were "you could be somebody".... my response somebody like who?? By now I'm annoyed and puzzled at the same time. I told her I have never heard of a policy such as this. She then proceeds to tell me that I could be a competitor ‍. I walk off because this lady is way over thinking. I decide to leave the store because of the way I was approached by this associate, but I wanted to ask someone else to get verification. One of the managers told me to feel free and take as many pictures that I wanted to... Needless to say I didn't buy what I wanted and I may not go back to this location. This is a frequent stop for me because it is right down the road from work. My go to lunch is the spicy tuna sushi bowl. It is always very fresh or can be made to order! They offer a wide variety of deli sandwiches and to go salads, wraps, and microwaveable meals. Yesterday I had a great snack pack made up of grapes, bagel crisps and salami. The meat selection is unbelievable. The meat looks freshly butchered and always very high quality! I also enjoy picking up local salsa and one of their healthier options for chips. My FAVORITE part is the wine and beer selection. The prices are very reasonable and they offer good deals on certain days. My only complaint is sometimes they can be a little pricey and over my teacher budget but it's always nice for a little "treat myself" meal. read more

This place is beautifully picturesque. I could have just walked around all day. I picked up a few things for a gourmet meal not too long ago. I wouldn't recommend coming here to do everyday essential shopping but it's nice to just come and pick up a few ingredients for a special meal. They have an antipasto bar that is amazing. They also have great croissants and other baked goods if you need to pick up some stuff for a brunch meeting, picnic or potluck. It's located near Brookwood Mall but it's away from all the hoopla so parking is easy and the way they designed the roads at this particular mall makes it so easy to come in and leave without wanting to pull your hair out like you would at the summit or Galleria. They could definitely work on customer service. Everyone that works here looks kind of miserable and I'm not sure why and what's going on behind the scenes. No one is rude but no one welcomes you or tries to help you. Prices are okay if you want a few things but it is expensive. They do however maintain quality. read more

It pleasantly complements beer selection in Trader Joe. - Tasty pastries for reasonable price and in a reasonable size - Huge choice of nuts and seeds in bulk department - Blazingly fast cash registers that can send you receipts by email. Several things I don't like, though all minor: - Small selection of yogurts, usually I can't find what I'm looking for. Of course, I can always go to the Target that is right next to it, but it will take another 10 minutes. - They sell no liquor, only wine and beer. But usually supermarkets don't have things I'm interested in, so I have to go to the ABC Liquor anyway. - During summer time, it is quite cool inside. This grocery store is gorgeous. It may not be monster-sized like Wal-Mart but the interior accommodates for every display and aisle. When I first walked in, all I could do was smile at the overall presentation. Who cares if everything is pricier than the other alternatives? Like Publix, shopping should be a pleasure. Getting groceries should be an enjoyable experience, not a chore. There are various stands located at the entrance and throughout the store with samples of homemade apple cider, pumpkin milk, and pumpkin coffee with cream and sugar provided. Each section of Fresh Market serves its purpose. Their meat area had a butcher taking orders. Their bakery had a wonderful selection of pastries with women hovering like vultures. If you don't end up buying anything from here, at least you'll have a lovely time wandering through their aisles and appreciating the atmosphere. read more

Is it just me or do the employees really hate their jobs here? Popped in over the weekend and I'm reminded why I welcome the slightly higher prices at Whole Foods. Came in an hour before closing and the salad bar had already been fully broken down and they were in the process of taking down the others. Went to the deli to purchase some of the prepared foods. I inquired about the prices of different items. After my second inquiry the employee was kind of flustered and stated (very nicely) that she had to look everything up because "we're about to close so I'm not sure about the price or anything right now". LOL! Oh okay. Still 45 minutes out from closing time and she was more focused on shutting down. I guess they're trying to walk with the customers at quitting time. But this is always my experience when I come here. You can definitely tell the difference between management and the regular employees just by the frequency of eye contact and general disposition. With regard to inventory, they do have a slightly different inventory from WF, especially with regard to their GF snack selection. So that's nice. And the prices tend to be lower. ($2.99/lb chicken and beef once a week!) So if I just need to run in and grab a few specific things, I'll come here. I just have to remind myself that this is an expensive, no frills grocery store. On the other hand, if I want to have a pleasant experience (to justify the exorbitant tab I'll pay on the way out), I'll stick to WF. read more

I really love the experience of shopping here more than any other grocery store. There is something about the feel of this place that lets me slow down instead of feeling like I'm running another errand quickly. The grocery store is always clean and the cashiers are always kind and engaged. I typically go on Tuesdays for the 2.99 chuck and chicken deal. They offer free bananas or oranges for little ones - which is perfect to keep my 19 month old entertained while I shop. Recently, I've gotten the salmon and smoked salmon from The Fresh Market and was impressed with the quality of both. So much so that my husband asked me to only buy salmon from here now on. Last but not least - the ALMOND PILLOW cookies. If you've never had these, do yourself a favor and buy a dozen the next time you are here. So so so yummy!!! read more

I go to The Fresh Market regularly the last 6 months. The last 2 months I've purchase (at regular price) old rolls, hard cookies (that are supposed to be moist) old salad. What happened? This morning I stopped by and purchased a salad to have for dinner---I opened it up and had to pick thru the brown lettuce to get some dinner. My fiancé and I tried one of their Meal Kits. It was $16.99 and it was quite the deal for us. We were freaking blown away!!! It took 15 minutes, and we were ecstatic. I believe they have about 6 different dinners, and we are going to try them all! Tonight we had the bourbon steak, with green beans and sweet potatoes. I highly recommend!!! I'm really torn. I love the store concept and everything it offers. But the store layout is SO tight and hard to maneuver. So I wish I could give it like a 3.5, but only because it wasn't a comfy shopping experience. I've never been in a Fresh Market so I wasn't sure what to expect. It's a cross between a small Publix and maybe tiny Whole Foods or V. Richards or some other type of boutique kind of grocer. I haven't compared prices of basic items yet. I only went in for a salad and snacks. But what I love so far is the really helpful staff, huge selection of organic and gourmet selections. And in the middle of the store (takes up a lot of space) is a selection of 'self-serve' candy, nuts, dried veggies and dried fruits. It's like a small candy store!! Awesome. They also had wine tasting tho their wine prices are a tad higher than other grocery stores. I know it was crowded because it was the first week. However, wheeling those huge baskets in the back of the store would have been unwieldy even without other customers. They have a lot of good stuff that they've tried to cram into small sq footage. Overall, awesome to have a store in that area and I'm really impressed at how Brookwood has really stepped it up. Again today I walked in (I don't even know why I bother anymore) and there is a sign for Organic Strawberries over an entire display of two cartons of organic strawberries and 20 or 30 convention. This is so pathetic. You can't market and try to distinguish yourself as "fresh" and "healthy" and not get basic stuff like this right. This review is two fold. I want to review this establishment overall, while I also want to mention I incident in particular. Fresh Market entered the Birmingham market as the first real competition to Whole Foods. The original one on 280 is a nice little market, but even at its best, it is no Whole Foods. So you would think they would focus on quality and customer service to cover the slack. But the FM at Brookwood, fails at that too. I have never once encountered an employee that I would call friendly. By and large they all act as if I should just be happy I am getting service at all. They are rushed and rude, with no attempts to be helpful or informative. Then the food, I often have to leave and go elsewhere due to items being unavailable and the prepared food, like sandwiches, salads and sushi are just not up to par. For instance, I recently picked up a chicken salad croissant and they filling was not even in the bread, just tossed in, Willy nilly! The sushi is worse than Publix and that is saying something! And that brings me to the incident. You might wonder why I go there if it is so bad, well it is just outside Brookwood hospital, so I go out of convenience, since my wife has been here for the past few months. In her first week there, for chemo, she did not eat for days, then out of nowhere, she says she is craving coconut shrimp. Knowing they had that fresh, I drive down to fresh market to get it. They have the shrimp breaded and ready to cook, so I explained my situation to the man at the seafood counter, and asked if they would cook the shrimp in the oven, in the prepared food section. Without a moments hesitation he said "nope" I looked at the ovens and said, "really they are just right there. Can I speak to a manager" he told me bluntly that one was not available! I was flabbergasted and very angry! Rather than make a fuss, I just stormed out and decided to document the incident here, as a warning to others! read more

Coming from south Texas I miss HEB grocery store something fierce. Like I dream about it at night miss it. But this has helped a little to fill that void. It's not even rightfully so, though. It seems like they're trying to pass as a Whole Foods atmosphere when they have stuff in there that Whole Foods would never dream of putting in their store. It feels a bit more stuck up than Whole Foods. I know. No one knew it was possible. But it is. (I really like Whole Foods, but you know what I mean.) There are so many things in here that I could just get at Target or WalMart. If you're coming to Fresh Foods, go to the sushi and the fresh made food section! That's where the party is. read more

The store is gorgeous, the prices reasonable and the food is presented exceptionally well. Were it not for the deli, I'd give fresh market five stars. I dare you, no, I double dog dare you to go to the deli and order a sandwich without getting frustrated. You think that you'd go to the sign reading "order sandwiches here". Don't be silly. Go there and there's 3.5 feet of cheese display separating you from employees who then send you to order at the rotisserie section of the deli some 35 feet away. Get there and what to order? No problem, get a menus some twenty feet away by the prepared salads. Additional sandwiches are in a cooler thirty feet from there. Hot sandwiches are in another section fifteen or so feet from there. Seriously, it's spread out with no forethought of efficiency or customer convenience. A few nice and helpful employees try to help you make sense out of the insanity while others politely ignore you. When I say ignore, I mean really ignore... like I'm standing 4-5 feet away but I won't even look up despite that I'm standing under that now famous "order sandwiches here" sign. Back to those salads... V Richards does a land office business with a salad sampler plate. Fresh market has nothing of the sort although determining this took a lengthy conversation with several employees. One tried direct us to their catering menu so we could order a party platter of assorted salads. Catering menu when it's just me and my wife trying to get lunch? Salads are by the pound only so no lunch plates. They offer a split chicken with two side salads but no salad only options. This is our second trip. The food is good but the hassle is simply not worth it until they get the bugs worked out. At this point, it's bedlam. I ended up waiting close to 20 minutes for two sandwiches. There were far more employees behind the counter than customers being served. It's a new store and a wonderful woman from management was very apologetic. She assured everyone that the problems were going to be addressed. Currently there is simply no system in place. Back to the food, the sandwiches are wonderful with great, fresh flavors. Their rotisserie sandwiches feature house roasted meats and freshly baked breads. The portions are exceptional with one easily being enough for two people. At about $6 each, they are a great value. There are two tables inside and a few outside. It's a shame they don't have more seating. With thousands of office workers, upscale professionals and hungry college students a mere stone's throw from the store, they could kill at lunch with a few simple tweaks. Really, once you suffer through the considerable irritation of ordering, the food is quite good and reasonably priced. Come spring, the outside tables will be a great lunch spot for diners looking for good sandwiches, sushi, etc. I'm sure they will have it all ironed out by then. read more
