I went out there to offer them a drink since they hand dig the septic, which helps keep from busting it with a machine, which is indeed what happen many years ago with some others, who cracked one of my lids. Upon offering them a drink, the older guy (I wish I could remember his name) and I started talking. Just good folk, let me tell ya. They found a bunch of Chlorox wipes in my tank which I had a feeling my daughters had been lying about flushing... A backed up septic system in a rental unit is never the start of a good week. The crew didn't just discover this and abandon us. They rooted the line and gave the tenant some advice that bought us a few days of use until the system was cleaned. They also had a recommendation for a handyman that could move the stairs for us. Once the stairs were moved they were back at it the very next day and got the job done. It's nice when a company goes above and beyond-- I felt like they took ownership of the job and made it happen. Reasonable price, nice people, very satisfied overall.

Smokey Mountain only drained half of one of our tanks and didn't even touch the other. She was quoted $12,000 for the repair and signed a contract she could not read. We later learned this price was nearly double what other licensed plumbers in the area estimated for the same work. When I contacted the owner, Robert Rutherford, to ask about the large price discrepancy, he stated that the employee who provided the quote was "from California" and had used California pricing. Robert ultimately agreed to void the original contract and issue a new one, but only after the cost was challenged. The project itself took weeks to complete, with multiple missed return appointments and repeated promises that were not kept. After the job was finally finished, construction debris--including lumber and a ladder--was left throughout the yard. My elderly grandmother attempted to clean it up herself until I contacted the company again. Although I was told someone would come the next morning, no one arrived until I called back later that afternoon. Robert Rutherford portrays himself as a man of his word who puts his customers first, but his conduct--and the conduct of his employees--demonstrates the complete opposite. Overall, the experience was stressful, drawn out, and required constant follow-up to get basic commitments fulfilled. I would strongly encourage others to avoid this business entirely and find someone more reliable.
