I don't know about this place. We actually came here by mistake, trying to get to the bar next door. We enjoyed our drinks but this is a bar for a specific type of night. By day, this space is Sfumato, a fragrance shop, and by night it turns into Castalia, a cocktail bar. A short 3 minute walk from Cass Corridor, Sfumato is this quaint little below-ground space that speaks to my soul. They are located in this little Victorian-era house & also have a patio area filled with seating as well during the nice weather months. The inside space is tiny, just enough room for the bar, a few cocktail standing tables, with a selection of books & fragrances lining the walls. Their fragrances are so delicious & come in all kinds of sizes. From a full bottle down to a collection of small samples. They also sell incense & incense holders that are so cute & so well scented. The employees are knowledgeable about fragrances and are more than willing to help pair you with the perfect scent for you. Perhaps my favorite thing about Sfumato is their Scented Cinema. This is what "smell-o-vision" always wished it could be & what Sfumato has cracked. They created a scent bundle filled with individual scents paired to moments in classic movies for you to spray as you watch the movie to add a smell element at appropriate & poignant points in the movie. I bought the one they made for Wizard of Oz and it really elevated the experience of this classic! A great gift idea if you have fragrance lovers & cinephiles in your life! :) read more

A very cool concept! I found it interesting how they blended the fragrances for a unique sensory experience with the cocktails. This was very special for me because I don't drink alcohol and it elevated the cocktail experience. The flavors were bold, original and sophisticated. Staff was very knowledgeable and the atmosphere was like being in the apothecary of an alchemist. Highly recommend getting a reservation! We went early at opening and put our names on the list. Fortunately we were able to get in, but it is very exclusive with limited seating. read more

What a cool place I would like to come back here at least every month. I recently quit drinking cold turkey and they had a great selection of mocktails so I could enjoy the flavors and scents . The staff goes above and beyond to make sure that you know what kind of drinks you are getting, and they even gave me a special birthday sample. They offer a charcuterie board, but I was not hungry. We did get the nuts and they were satisfying. It's been such a cool location with some seating outside and it's really a one of a kind unique gem in Detroit. I wasn't even sure which to review, but it looks like Castalia has their carry-outs cocktails available at the Sfumato Fragrances location, since that is definitely downstairs. I would totally give five stars for both the charming location and the delicious cocktail and fragrance pairing! This fragrance store that converts to a cocktail bar after hours looks so cozy! And smells amazing. Once the world starts turning again, it's definitely on my bucket list to wander the amazing Midtown area and enjoy cocktails here. I also loved browsing their unique book selections - lots of intriguing titles about history and such of liquors and cocktails. I love reading and these never occurred to me - there goes my to-be-read list, growing again. So happy that Castalia and Sfumato participated in a local Yelp event so I could learn that they're there! Can't wait to go back :) read more

Sfumato, besides being fun to say, is directing the cocktail in a logical direction. An underappreciated proportion of the experience of consumption comes through scent, and the pairing of fragrances with cocktails makes sense if done right. (Who among us hasn't had their enjoyment of a meal tempered by the smell of nearby teenage date-rape body spray?) Sfumato isn't really offering anything that different than the barbecue restaurant down the street or that bowl-shaped wine glass -- each is providing a specific olfactory experience. It's just that Sfumato is taking the control of that experience to a different place. I have yet to set foot in the building, but I recently treated myself to one of their highly curated experiences. We ordered a "scented cinema" kit, which came with 7 custom scents to pair with particular scenes in the Wizard of Oz. We had to forego the popcorn for this viewing, but we agreed that it was great fun. I won't spoil the review with specifics, but I will say that while some of the scents were obvious, others we never could quite figure out. And it only added to the fun that we found our attention disrupted from the flow of the film to focus on the scents. I can see how it might seem, at first glance, that a scented movie experience is a prime example of human excess. But when you think about it, humankind hasn't been all that kind to our noses. We've moved away from farms and into cities. We live in climate-controlled boxes and breathe our own stink. Why shouldn't we treat ourselves to a better olfactory existence? Fight the good fight, Sfumato. read more

This place is sooooooooo cute and intimate. My boyfriend and I went for date night. The drinks are based off unique fragrances made special by the employees. The ambience was relaxing and calm. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for someplace to wind down alone or with a partner. It smells amazing, the drinks are tasty, and they have books! The only thing I didn't like was the amount of space. There's about three tables in total and there is seating at the bar. Otherwise, you'll probably have to go outside and sit at the patio. We stopped in on our way out of a restaurant. We were so glad we did! Kyle and Maryann (I think thrat was her name. Forgive me, I'm terrible with names) we're so friendly and pleasant. They were knowledgeable about the products and drinks we had. Kyle made me a paper plane drink, and I hate bourbon, with rosemary in it, and it was EXCELLENT.
