Oh... my... goodness! I had some trepidation about coming here for our traditional Christmas day repas, because of this place's mediocre rating (3.2 stars as of last night). That said, the vast majority of their Yelp ratings refer to their Disco that starts up in the evening... but we were there for a special Christmas menu in the early afternoon. We got there about 1:30 and were greeted by a staff member (at street level) that radioed the restaurant (at beach level) that we'd arrived. We were greeted by the maitre'd who seated us alongside a window with an unobstructed view of the beach in the foreground and the Mediterranean behind that. We'd pre-ordered the special "Menu Nadal," (Christmas menu). For the starter, my wife had the cannelloni with shredded chicken and mushrooms (with pine nuts, arugula and parmesan) and I had the traditional Catalan stew with a rich assortment of meats, vegetables, pasta shells and an amazing broth. Both plates were absolutely outstanding. Our second main course was roasted sea bass (with potatoes and zucchini, a prawn and an amazing sauce). The folks at the next table had the beef confit, which they swore was as good as it gets. The meal was accompanied by a bottle of a very tasty rioja, and topped off with a scrumptious dessert... apple strudel with a vanilla sauce and a scoop of really good pistachio ice cream. ...followed by a second dessert of assorted turrones and wafers. Oh, and a really nice coffee to top it off. Oh, and a "chupito" at the end. My wife went for the Baileys, and I had a very nice Limoncello. In all, we were there for a good 2.5 hours. In all that time, the wait staff was very attentive but not at all obtrusive. Their comportment made me think they were all co-owners whose very livelihood depended upon how WE were treated. I mean, really... these guys made our meal into a truly extraordinary experience. I can't speak about their disco at night but this experience was absolutely FIVE STAR. Way to go! We got bottle service, a table for 6 people. The table was small with only a bench on one side, wide enough to squeeze 4 people on it. That was a bit disappointing. We went to Opium our first night in Barcelona and you literally couldn't even hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation with anyone. Then when you can almost hear yourself think some dude drenched in sweat jumps into you "dancing" to some weirdo techno song. But aye to each his own. We had the polar opposite experience at Shôko. The music is still loud but you can have at least some semblance of conversation. The music is more of a mix than just straight techno, as a memorable back to back spin was "XO Tour Life" to that Kylian Mbappé song the French people love. Not saying it was the best music, but it was very serviceable and I won't complain. It gets packed in there, but not where you can't move or get claustrophobic. Where Shôko falls short is the drink portions. I will give it to them, they are diabolically savvy. They put 2 ice cubes in every drink (10 euro) that are the same shape as the glasses and they take up probably 90% of the volume of the glass. Smh. We were here for both dinner and the nightlife. If you find yourself at Shoko, it's for the atmosphere. It's huge, beautiful, right on the beach, and filled with groups of attractive people balling out on bottle service..... I was overall happy with our experience here. The service was outstanding which really surprised me. World's better than the service you would get at a similar establishment in New York. Drinks were strong and they had a vast selection of cocktails as well as bottles of wine/champagne/etc. We both got mojitos. The menu was an interesting mix of Spanish/Asian Fusion. We stuck to the paella which was huge (perfect for sharing) and delicious. Honestly, I wish I came more hungry because I have a newfound love for paella and doggie bags don't seem to be a thing in Spain. Regarding the nightlife - it is insane here (just like the other clubs nearby). And the cover was 20€ which we found to be standard in Barcelona. Also, while we were there for dinner, a woman was walking around giving back/neck massages. She only offered this service to men though (lol). I've never seen this before in a restaurant/bar/club/lounge/etc. Maybe it's a cultural difference? Maybe I just don't get out enough? On my last day in Barcelona I very much enjoyed having some drinks in the evening here. I tried the Frozen Queen (Reina Helada) and the Mojito. They were both absolutely delicious and sweet. I typically don't like sweet drinks, but these were very refreshing in the painfully hot and humid weather I was in. The Mojito had hibiscus which was especially helpful in feeling a little refreshed. For my 3rd drink I went back to my go to drink, Jameson with a splash of ginger. Here the server brought me Jameson on the rocks and a little bottle of ginger ale for me to pour to my liking. The service was fantastic and we were even offered a 10 minute massage that we could pay whatever we thought it was worth. Skipped the massage but good to know! Later on that night around 2am, I returned with a group of friends for a fun night with bottle service. Danced the night away with some Henny and Ciroc and a little hookah! Great music with a mix of hip hop and reggaeton. Some top 40 as well. It was a great time and the groupies reminded me of LA hahaha. Way to spend my last night in beautiful Barcelona! Didn't get to the hotel until 6am and the club was still live before I left. If you don't have a table and/or VIP, the line outside is incredibly long. read more

Great atmosphere, right on the water. Perfect for a romantic dinner. Cocktail menu was just OK, selection was a bit basic and the flavors in my cinnamon/flower gin and tonic weren't very well mixed. Food was decent. Tried the chicken skewers and the grilled squid over quinoa. Chicken was just OK and the squid was pretty good although I've had better. My friend's wagyu steak wasn't that great either. Servers were very friendly. There is also a massage lady that walks around offering massages (pay what you want). I think it makes for an awkward dinner but if that's your thing, go for it. I should start off by saying the food here is quite good and the location is beautiful. Apart from that the terrible service and the plastic dropper left in our food just made for an unpleasant experience. If you spend much time in Spain, you kind of get used to very, um...relaxed (slow) service. This was so much worse. Starter and main. All at once. Servers remove the lids off our entrees and I ask if they can put them back on because they arrived at the same time as out first course. Waitress then says to me "oh you didn't want everything at the same time?" I speak fluent Castilian. No, we did not want all our food jammed into this tiny table. And I'm not really fond of hot food going cold, so at least keep the lid on my main when you make that kind of mistake so I don't eat a cold main while I'm having my first course. I respond to this by asking the server "the starters are meant to come out first, correct?" She sheepishly answered yes. Mains are covered, taken away. I tried calling after to repeat I just wanted it covered while I ate the starter but nope, walked away. Might have been the lunchtime techno, or just another example of crap service. So we're tucking into our starter, and there's a plastic dropper half full of an orangey sauce in my dinner companion's ceviche. I call one of the two servers attending us over and ask "what is this?" she smiles like everything's just fine and responds "it's a vinaigrette for the ceviche". Ok, but why is it in the dish still? "It's a vinaigrette for the ceviche." Ok, whatever. We're still eating our first courses when someone I suppose was the manager came over and asked us if we were ready for our mains yet. Since we were still only about halfway through our first course and our food wasn't shrouded in a giant curtain I'm not sure why he asked. Finally the mains came 15 minutes later. No, we didn't want dessert, we just wanted to leave. When we got the bill not only were we overcharged for my first drink, no one, including the "manager" came to apologize for the poor service or offer something for it. I'm guessing maybe the kitchen was backed up. They were fairly busy that afternoon. But the servers and manager handled the FOH terribly too, which made for an unpleasant lunch experience. Shame too. Review is for lunch and drinks on the patio. We liked this place so much that we came three times during our short stay in Barcelona. They have free wifi. Ask for the password. Great service, beautiful space and good looking staff. The so called "thugs", aka our waiter even chased down a guy selling flowers on the beach who was trying to rip us off. Shoko is a restaurant/nightclub. They have tables for dining, romantic seating pods, and comfy couches for sipping beautifully prepared cocktails. I appreciate the bowls of fresh fruit that is cut to order for the drinks. My only complaint is some of the drinks were a bit too sweet for me. Their best drink is definitely the Cava Sangria, lightly sweetened and filled with fresh cut fruits. This is a Japanese fusion restaurant so we ordered seafood. The sashimi was very fresh and beautifully presented. The desserts were divine. I especially loved the mango dessert trio. read more

If you are looking for a Young crowd then this is the place. When I mean young I mean there are groups and groups of people that look like they are 15 partying in the club. Maybe this is normal?? Where do I start....? So this club is what you expect from the tourist clubs in this zone. Here is why you should try to find other clubs: 1) 70% of the people in there are men. This one is tough. I mean this is at least 70%, not max. You will have a hard time there if you are a single guy. For girls, you will get hit on every second, from all sides. If you like a good party, then you know a missing balance between guys and girls is an issue. The clubs in this street are the proof. 2) Owners don't care who is playing in their club. It is not about the music itself. Djs play what you would expect of such a club (pop, EDM, hip hop, etc). The big issue is the way the DJs deliver the music: The DJ consistently destroyed every piece of music that he played and should have never gotten a gig in a club. EVER! But the club owners and staff don't care about your experience as they don't need you to come back anyway. Just to give you an idea what I am talking about, this is what the DJ did to empty the dancefloor: i) play a song everyone loves so the crowd starts to go crazy ii) after the first chorus, remix it to generate a cheap drop iii) start playing a random EDMish beat that has nothing to do with the song everyone was freaking out about before iv) Ignore the confused to angry stares after you raped Macklemore, DJ Khalid, Dr Dre, Rihanna, etc like this v) generate lots of revenue: after 4-5x doing this, people leave or have to drink a lot to keep having a good time. I gave this feedback to the club (staff and security). They even agreed with me. After apologising for my bad experience, they told me that this is how it sometimes is in this club. Other nights have different DJs and can be better. But they couldn't tell me which nights exactly will be different and how so. Afterall, they are a tourist club and delivering a consistently good experience is simply not part of their work. If you had a different experience, I am happy for you. By no means I just want to hate. I want the club owners to think about their strategy a little bit. Most of those clubs don't care anymore. Who cares about the customers? In the end we are only tourist. We won't come back anyway. But this kind of thinking leads to a 3 star experience, probably falling. Thanks for reading the whole piece until here. Can't speak to the food / restaurant part as this was for the nightclub experience. Showed up a little after 2AM and the place was packed for a Wednesday night. There was a €10 cover but it included a drink (worth it - a drink was about that much anyway). The music was generally decent for dancing -- it was a mixture of hip hop, euro dance, and the occasional EDM. If you sit out on the back patio, you can order a hooka. Service was pretty slow but it's not like you'd be going anywhere fast. read more

This review is not based on dining in or the food, but rather the amazing club experience I had last night. The club was filled with beautiful women and had a very diverse crowd. You will find people from ages 20-40s. The DJs play hip hop, rap, dance. The had these dancers in costumes on these platforms at one point. You should sign up on the guest list before going to bypass the lineup. This club starts to get live around midnight and gets overcrowded as the night moves along. It also backs the beach and has food vendors and other smaller clubs along a strip. I would definitely recommend this club when visiting Barcelona. read more

I was outside with a small group of Girls for my birthday party waiting to speak with the VIP host. The VIP host who met us was wearing about 6'9 and was wearing a sequin dark blue sport coat.. We met a group of guys earlier in the night who were going to buy us a table and bottle for my birthday. The VIP host was asking our new friends about budget/ table location etc, and I when responded he turned around and asked us if we were retarded and how dare we interrupt a conversation he was having. The place itself is beautiful and what lured us in was the fact that they offered sushi along with being a night club that was often mentioned as a place to check out by the locals. We arrived late on a Friday night, just slightly before they closed the dining area. Once they close the dining area, they remove the tables to make more space for a full night club scene which I thought was cool. They were able to seat us fairly quickly and service was quick although not exceptional (waitress wasn't the best). Putting that aside, the drinks were good and the sushi was good but bordering mediocre. We weren't expecting the sushi to be fabulous anyhow, more there to enjoy the experience. After our light sushi indulgence, we stayed a little longer to enjoy the night life. We happened to be there during an event called, "Fashion's Night BCN" in which we got to play fashion trivia to win clothing and accessories. By the time I got a chance to redeem a fashion prize, it was slim pickings but that doesn't take away from the event itself. I guess Shoko is a good spot for the right crowd. You come here to drink a cocktail with a nice view on the beach, or later on to enjoy a party. However, do not come for dinner, especially not for a business dinner as I did. First, the food is awfully expensive: I paid €26 to get 8 makis. No rice, no side, nothing - just 8 makis. And it was not the most expensive dish on the menu - all the dishes were around 20-30€ without side!! Second, the atmosphere is... not classy. You have waitresses in leather dresses coming to ask if you want a message and young rich adults making out everywhere. Came to the club version at around 2:15am. It was horrible and probably the second worst nightlife experience of my life. I didn't mind paying the 15€ at the door for 2 drinks. Nbd. The problem was those drinks were straight up WATER. I swear, I didn't feel a thing and I hadn't eaten in over 8 hours. One drink should have had me swaying but I was perfectly sober. We got a second drink with Ciroc thinking that wouldn't be water but low and behold, that drink was watered down as well. AND she charged us 4€ extra because Ciroc is "more expensive." TUH! IT WAS STRAIGHT WATER. And normally I can tolerate house music and college kids, especially if I'm at the very least tipsy but no. I couldn't even get into the vibe of the place even though it was packed on a Monday night. Would have helped if my drinks weren't such trash. My friend and I left after only 45 minutes. I whiled away many afternoons at Shoko while the kids played at the beach. Their sushi and sashimi selection is small, but the quality of the ingredients is faultless. I enjoyed pitcher after pitcher of sangria de cava. The best experience at Shoko, though, was when a street vendor was going about selling roses. I refused, but he asked for just €1for two roses, and I felt sorry for him and obliged him. He walked off with a €10 bill without giving me change. I ran after him, and our waiter ran right alongside me. In stilted Spanish, I tried to explain what happened. The waiter understood, and forced the vendor to give me my money back. In a country known for its gambas, to put this on a plate is not cool. Now I did not expect 10 large shrimp with a fixed menu at lunch, but I did expect more than this; 5 medium sized ones would have been great. Oh well. What a joke of a system they have going on at the entrance. Upon arrival, we were told that the guest list was closed and that we would have to pay $15 to get in: this was fine but once we tried to pay to get in, we were denied entrance. We asked another staff member about their policy and he said we could get in for $15, but again, the bouncer who had denied our entrance initially, whispered something in his ear and he came back and said we could not get in. Eventually we went in, thanks to a local friend but I would definitely recommend that you go elsewhere: the staff is rude and plays favorites, and the music is what you typically find at any other club. After visiting the Port Olimpic, we explored the beach and decided on Shoko. I was taken with the idea of Asian Fusion in Barcelona.
