I was wrong. Three of the companies told me they don't service blinds they didn't install (which makes me think the algorithm on "Projects" needs some work, since my term was "blind repair"). One told me they could only do the work in their shop which would require a separate charge for removing it from the house (and presumably letting any sleeper wake at sunrise until it was returned). Fortunately, Bloomin' Blinds (which is a family-owned business, and those need support, particularly when they're excellent) called, required a charge for the inspection but could do the repair on site and after looking at pictures I submitted and asking for another additional, gave me the logical rate per string required to repair. It seemed reasonable - half the cost of repair quoted by the people after the additional fee for coming to the house to remove it. So I booked them (those consult fees always scare me because they have you paying with or without the repair if the quote is too high for you -- so if you have a required fee for inspection, quiz like crazy and write it down lest you be on the other side of ridiculous, if they think your questions are too numerous, you are better off without them showing up and possibly surprising you). Steve, the owner, pulled up as indicated by the route map of his van and and couldn't have been friendlier or more capable and conscientious. He told me it was a three-string blind, and found why the pull was fraying - an old mechanism (a small cylinder) that was the only addition to what I had been given as the probable quote. My blinds are great. The service was super-efficient and friendly. The repair seems solid. (I was ready to blame the other blind puller who lives here. I WANTED to blame the other blind puller, but when I was shown the worn out piece, I tried to STILL blame the other blind puller, but couldn't and had to fess up. A very strong recommendation for efficiency, ease, competence, communication and price. I have my go-to for future projects.
