There communication is close to Zero! If you need anything you have to go to the portal and ask them and then it depends on when they are in the mode to answer it with the same stupid portal even to schedule an appointment! For me this sounds stupid and nonsense that you can't provide a clear number for the cost of the treatment. Will not recommended this practice to anyone and definitely going somewhere else because I don't think so that you can conceive by speaking to an online goest. My wife and I went to this practice after previously having a positive experience at another SGF location. I can not express enough how awful our experience was!!!! I felt talked down to from the first visit, no one was friendly, very disorganized. In addition when Dr. Johnston was off the other physicians were even colder and 2 told me they did not know my plan, that a nurse would get back to me --I had to personally call and hound them. Also do NOT get me started on their atrocious billing department. I am very thankful for Dr. Shah and his medical expertise as my husband and I are currently pregnant because of him. Dr. Shah has great bedside manners and always answered in depth any questions I had during our phone calls and/or visits. That being said, I was/am 100% not satisfied with my experience at Shady Grove Fertility. As mentioned above I had no issues with Dr. Shah, but rather the practice as a whole. On more than one occasion I had to correct a staff member (nurses and receptionists) on what procedure I was coming in for or what was being done that day. On one occasion I had to correct a doctor when he was seeing me. Though this doesn't seem like a big deal it made me feel I was just a number in the office and not seen as a patient. On at least three occasions I've called and left messages for the nurses/receptionists regarding questions or prescriptions that needed to be refilled and over 24 hours went by with no call back or no update in the patient portal. It was only after making another phone call pressing my concern or need for someone to call me back that I got a call back. Sometimes with an apology on the delay, other times with nothing. This made me feel unimportant and frustrated with the practice, once again feeling like just a number in the system rather than a patient trying to conceive. The last ordeal was a very simple prescription refill that originally was mailed to me with the trigger shot (so it came from out of state). Come time to refill all I was trying to do was transfer the prescription to a local pharmacy so that I could pick it up (quicker than getting it mailed to me). 24 hours went by and once again I had not heard back from Shady Grove. I called at 3:45PM the next day (now close to 48 hours) and attempted to speak to a receptionist as the nurses explained if I needed immediate assistance on a refill I should call front desk instead. The phone rang until I got a voicemail. I continued to call two more times and never got ahold of any receptionist. This gives the impression their phones were off the hook even though the office does not close until 4PM (this was also not the first time I experienced this). Finally, on the third day (and last day of progesterone pills prior to needing the refill) I called and essentially demanded to stay on the line with the receptionist until someone told me what was going on. Though I cannot remember her name, this was the only time I felt like I was taken care of (though it took repeated messages and phone calls). The receptionist handled the matter directly, said she would speak to the nurses and find out the ordeal, speak to my insurance if needed, and call me back within an hour to update me on the situation. It was pretty much the only time I have felt like I was treated with respect. Lastly, on two of my appointments while waiting to be taken back (as I was sitting in the waiting room) I overheard two employees (two receptionists one time, a receptionist and a nurse the other) talk negatively about an employee and on the other occasion a patient who had just left. In no practice do I think it is ethical for patients to overhear employees talk about other employees and patients. On one of these occasions after chatting for a couple of minutes the nurse asked the receptionist "do we have a patient?" as she looked at me. The receptionist said "oh, yes she is checked in is she not?" I interrupted them to inform them, that yes, I had already checked in, had heard their entire conversation, and asked if they were ready to take me back. My husband and I liked Dr. Shah and had no issues with him but reflecting on the experience we had a lot of issues with Shady Grove Fertility. There always seemed to be a massive disconnect between the staff and doctors, a major communication issue among the staff. As mentioned above we felt like we were just a number in the system and going through protocol with payments being the most important (and not conceiving). We were fortunate enough to get pregnant with Dr. Shah but because we viewed the practice so negatively, we were not that far away from seeking help from another practice. I was ecstatic when I was cleared to go to my normal OBGYN for the rest of my pregnancy. I was referred to SGF through a friend who had Dr. Shah prior to it becoming SGF. I will not be recommending the practice to anyone in the future as my experience was so poor (again this is the practice in its entirety, not Dr. Shah). I gave SGF the benefit of the doubt for a while knowing the ownership transition but at what point do you say enough is enough. I was concerned I was the only one but among talking to other acquaintances who are patients I realized multiple women shared similar opinions. Reading the other reviews I was shocked to hear of their negative experian especially. I was with another fertility clinic that was very slow to respond. Never followed up and charged for things not being done. Shady Grove Fertility and Dr. Johnston have been like a breath of fresh air they always respond and I have not run into one staff member who was not nice. They are very up front about pricing. They have made a process that by nature is stressful as easy as possible. I would recommend them to anyone! read more

My husband and I scheduled a consultation appointment to discuss options based on familiar background. Dr. Johnson explained how embryo genetic testing worked and answered a few of our questions. We felt the staff were incredibly disorganized and the MD cold and made both of us very uncomfortable. We had the opposite experience at VCU and this chose to move forward with a different practice. About a month after our visit we received a $300 bill for a level 4 office visit. A level 4 visits are used for very sick and complex patients.
