She took the time to explain everything clearly and made a very overwhelming process feel much more manageable.Carrie and Emma was consistently supportive and responsive, always making sure my questions were answered and that I felt informed and cared for. Her kindness and attention to detail made a real difference during a stressful time. Hanaa Gordie financial advisor also provided excellent care and reassurance. The worst, most incompetent un-professionals I've ever dealt with in my life. It's very hard to explain to someone if you've never been through the process, but trust me, there are 9 million steps and a lot of them are duplicative. But don't worry, you are left to figure them out all on your own and if you call, no one can ever answer a question (that's not my department, I don't know about that, etc.) They rely too heavily on their "system" to deal with patients and everything is so templated and impersonal. You ask a question, they send you a form response which isn't relevant to your situation. I've been provided with inaccurate information multiple times, which has delayed my procedure. I'm been trying to freeze embryos since January and their incompetence has cost me several months, time, energy and planning. But they absolutely do not care. Was supposed to start my medication last night but there is a financial hold on my account so they can't give me the medication instructions despite us having already paid for both the retrieval, medication, etc. I've pleaded what can I do, I am going to miss my window again and their suggestion? since it's a weekend and they can't contact finance, my doctor or nurse since it's after hours...despite the fact that they were supposed to call me back, "we can put you on birth control and you can come back Monday so we can see if you're still looking good to start medication" How is this an acceptable way to do business. You call the nursing staff over the weekend or after hours? They have zero idea what you're talking about. They don't have access to the system, have never seen it, etc. Absolutely pathetic. Huge losers, don't waste your time. It's a cluster, the fact that anyone has a good experience at this place is out of sheer luck. read more

Working with Shady Grove has been one disaster after another. I made a standard appointment for semen analysis. After providing the sample at the K Street location, I was called two days later and informed that the appointment was set up incorrectly and I had to reschedule. No apology or explanation was provided and payment was collected. The next appointment was a hour away from my house but I took it. At the second appointment, I was greeted (Rockville location) by a rude front desk staffer who redirected me to a different floor. At the next front desk, the staff was again disorganized and rude. Today, I was told that results will not be added to my patient portal for up to 30 days, despite being told - repeatedly - that the test takes 7-10 days for results to be returned. To date, no one has apologized for the repeated failures of the staff. No one seems concerned that the staff is incapable of communicating effectively or scheduling appointments. Despite promises, a manager has yet to call me to discuss the situation. read more

After navigating hundreds of pages of paperwork, countless signatures, acknowledgments, and DIY-style instructional videos, I was finally ready to start IVF treatment. as instructed, I called on the first day I got my period to request a prescription for birth control in order to start it within less. than 48h. Simple enough, right? Wrong. What should have been a straightforward task turned into an exercise: endless emails, calls, and patience. Despite my repeated efforts, the prescription was never sent to the pharmacy. It makes you wonder: if a provider can't handle something as basic as sending a prescription, how can they manage the complexities of IVF? Long story short, the order wasn't sent, and I couldn't start the treatment I PAID FOR. On Monday, I will be bombed with nonsensical emails and calls again. read more

They give false hopes I literally begin my fertility process May 2024 I spoke with Dr Seltzers who suggested that I do an IUI and it was unsuccessful I explained to them that the treatments that they gave me raise my sugar level after they attempted to proceed to sell me that IVF plan come to find out I had to have several procedures done through another doctor before them only to come back and they tell me oh you have a high sugar level you have to wait till it gets lower now mind you and they would have never known that I had a higher sugar level issue in my blood if I did not address this with them just like my other concerns that had to be taken care of through a second recommendation their lab results never request for you to take blood samples to measure your glucose income to find out that was one of the main reasons that stop me from conceiving I worked on my sugar level and I still don't have any required assistance with them yeah they continue to promote these products without attempting to care about the customers internal health and then when the procedures given our successful they just throw you a tile and keep promoting if you allow them to I suggest that you please check on yourself internally before even convicting yourself to this process because the medicines provided only worsen your health read more

***ATTENTION LADIES*** Shady Grove is not only for IVF patients. If you've had multiple miscarriages like me, you might want to consider choosing Shady Grove (DC/K Street) to see their highly specialized reproductive endocrinologists. Let me start by saying KUDOS to my patient care coordinator "Jo-jo" (Jolissa) Vialva. I cannot praise her enough. She has been my champion and advocate throughout my maternal health journey. (More so than my OBs at Capital Women's Care who don't really seem to care half as much as Jo-jo.) Over the course of 5 months since I first made the appointment to see Dr Kimberly Moon (who was referred by three people I trust, including my gynecologist) Jo-jo has diligently and persistently followed up with me and even just messaged me from time to time to check up on me. I'm blown away because NONE of my doctors ever do that. She truly makes you feel like she cares! I especially appreciate her effort to fit a virtual appointment with Dr. Moon to accommodate my husband and my busy schedules. Initially there was a lot of confusion and miscommunication with my insurance during my transfer from the Shady Grove Fairfax location (which is HORRIBLE). I was very upset, but everything got resolved thanks to Lauren the Director of the Shady Grove DC location who personally called me to rectify the situation. I was extremely impressed by her leadership and the patient-centered resolution. She even gave me her direct phone line to call her if I needed her assistance (though thanks to Kayla the finance coordinator, everything was taken care of as promised.) Her gesture definitely helped build my trust and confidence in the care I would receive at Shady Grove. In terms of actual care/procedure, Dr. Kimberly Moon was very generous with her time -- she was clearly knowledgeable and thorough in reviewing my previous records, and patiently answered my husband and my questions without making us feel rushed. Getting a saline sonogram at the location was seamless: from the check-in process (no wait time) to the friendly front desk staff and the sonographer, everything was efficient and easy. The facility was immaculate. While I can't comment on their IVF treatments, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to SHADY GROVE DC location to receive quality care and follow up! read more

I used Dr. Widre and his team for IVF. I never got to meet him in person, but had excellent zoom meetings with him and felt very comfortable with him. His nurses were AMAZING! While the process is exhausting and complex, the nurses and doctors (at the K street office) were always available to answer any questions that I had and help me through the different stages. My IVF worked on the first go round, and I now have an 8 month old baby thanks to SGF K Street!!! I am eternally grateful to them and can't recommend them enough! read more

This is a difficult review (and has taken me several years to write) bc I liked my doctor as a person - she is very nice, and probably a good doctor (honestly, who knows bc way SG is set up, you don't really have much contact with doctors - I only got to meet with my doctor 2-3 times in the almost two years I was a patient.) SG is an assembly line. Everything is standardized, and it became clear that the goal was to see as many people as possible. You will have a meeting with "your" doctor in the beginning - and from that, best I can tell, you will be slotted into a category based on what procedure you are getting, and the rest of your interaction will be with administrative people reading down a generic protocol. You will have to go in for testing from time to time, but you will literally see a different person every time (and they will tell you vastly different things! No continuity of care). There is seemingly no ability for a doctor to make a decision based on your individual needs/situation - even when applying the "protocol" defies common sense. E.g., I'm a lesbian, and my WIFE was required to have an annual HIV test as a condition of MY treatment by SG. This requirement was non-negotiable bc they have some boilerplate generic policy that ALL married couples must both be tested for HIV at least every 12 months. Which, whatever, except (1) I was STILL fighting with my insurance company, 8 months later, to pay the almost $500 bill for SG's last round of unnecessary testing; (2$ tests are not free and even if insurance pays - then it's just raising premiums for all of us; and (3) it is statistically more likely to get HIV from a blood test than to transmit HIV through sexual contact between two women. Literally, my dentist is more statistically likely to give me HIV than my wife (and they don't test my dentist). I asked SG why was necessary for my wife to take time off from work to confirm that she had not become HIV positive in the last 12 months with 0 risk factors, when, even if she had, it would be statistically impossible for her to transmit HIV to me. I got some cold boilerplate response about how it was "protocol" and doctors had no authority to make changes, even if it's clear tests are unnecessary for individual patients. Just think about that: doctors have no authority to make treatment decisions based on the needs of individual patients. SG is boiler plate, assembly line medical advice, at premium prices. This was just one example, out of many many examples. SG had a long list of requirements and protocols and hoops, none of which benefited us in any way but instead served only to insulate SG from any possible liability. It's like they started their practice by first asking lawyers how to limit potential liability, next asked business people how to maximize profit, then tried to jam a medical practice into that narrow frame work. The result is a big stack of paperwork, repetitive unnecessary tests, needless hassle and time off from work on top of an already frustrating and time consuming process, disconnected doctors, formulaic "one size fits all" medical care, and - for us - no baby. (After probably 7 unsuccessful rounds with SG, and tens of thousands of dollars down the toilet with SG (which we now realize was due to poor timing by SG on IUIs) we went to another doctor, and now have 2 beautiful children. 2 for 2 with the other doctor, so pretty solid proof the problem was Shady Grove.) no read more

I will be forever grateful that Shady Grove helped me get pregnant with my son. I was there (mostly K St., some Rockville) many many many times over the course of almost a year and am now back again to try and have a second child. Shady Grove was a good fit for me personally, but may not be for everyone. Here's how I would describe it: The Pros - Know what they're doing. I did a LOT of research and they were doing exactly what the research indicated they should after certain treatments didn't work for me; they evolved my protocol based on my results so it felt personalized but fact-based - Many options for monitoring appointments (times, locations) and they're relatively fast, especially if you do the early morning ones before they run behind (they even let me go to an outside clinic when I was on vacation that sent results back to SGF so I didn't have to cancel my trip!) - Online portal to easily send messages (I always get a response) and see lab results - Open on weekends and holidays so don't mess up a cycle if your timing is on these days - Nice nurses. You primarily talk to nurses so this is important - Didn't push me to do what wasn't necessary. I went to Shady Grove to see if I should freeze my eggs when I was 30. They said based on my results, I could actually wait a couple years and see if I wanted to then. They easily could have taken my money back then, but I appreciated their honesty and that they didn't. Note they were right - I didn't need to freeze my eggs and waiting hasn't hurt my chances of getting pregnant (eggs aren't my issue). The Cons - It is a baby factory. If you want to see the same provider and nurse every time, have them empathize deeply with your feelings, and spend a lot of time with them, this place isn't for you (but if you just want to get the meds and have a kid, it may be) - Need to check things - because it's a baby factory, sometimes things slip through the cracks. For example, check they actually called in all medicines that were on your protocol (one time they forgot one of mine but I pointed it out, they apologized, called it in and no harm done). And ask questions as they sometimes forget to tell you things as they tell them to a ton of people each day - Billing is often a rush. You have to pay your part of a cycle before you can begin treatment (for me this was a co-pay). Sometimes I wouldn't get the bill until the day before my treatment was supposed to start so I had to pay in a rush. This wasn't an issue for me, but I could see these somewhat surprise bills being an issue for others. - Your individual doctor makes calls regarding your protocol and when you're ready for various procedures, but otherwise you don't see them unless something goes wrong (I always knew it was bad news when my doctor called). You primarily talk to one of several nurses on your doctor's team. And your doctor may or may not be in the OR on the day you have an egg retrieval or other procedure. I didn't mind this as all the nurses and doctors are qualified but it does make it feel less personal Overall, fertility issues are hard, but I think Shady Grove has made it at least relatively as painless as it can be and was a good fit for me. read more

We wanted to say THANK YOU to the staff and team members at Shady Grove! A huge thank you! We were dealing with male factor infertility and were struggling with the cost of IVF and around that time I (the husband) went to see Dr. Hayden (SG urologist) for an exam. He gave me a check up and said there was no clear and apparent reason for my low-T and my sperm count was only 2 million, but he suggested a rather rigorous treatment of HCG shots which I took for approximately 3 months which brought my count up to still only 12 million, but all you need is one! Then on my wife's 40th birthday she came into our bedroom crying...her pregnancy test was a POSITIVE!!!!! we had been struggling for nearly 5 years and already experienced a miscarriage and one of my sons from my first marriage had just passed away at the age of 29 and we were at a very low point in our journey. We prayed and prayed and it's our feeling that God placed us with the loving care of Shady Grove! It worked!! If you are struggling too, don't lose hope. Trust in Jehovah (Ps 83:18) and do what the doctors tell you! They know their business!!! Needless to say, we have a beautiful healthy baby boy, Daniel David! he's 2 weeks old this coming Wednesday! They misrepresented their billing policies. When I made the appointment, they represented that it would be easy to get refunded from insurance for their services. I confirmed this with my insurance, providing the insurance with the provider's name and contact information so that insurance could verify what they said. Insurance verified, and I proceeded with the procedure. However, when I submitted the bill to insurance, insurance said they could not refund me because the providor used a different tax id on the bill, and they could not refund under this tax id, but gave me the tax id I could use to get the refund. However, when I called Shady Grove Fertility to fix this problem, the representative told me that my insurance was wrong, and that insurance cannot tell them what to do and how to do their billing. The woman I spoke to was condensending and would not help me other than offering to talk to my insurance if I had my insurance call them so she could "explain it to them." She said she was not responsible for what other employees had said to me before the procedure. She clearly did not want to help me. They seem to have a scheme of some sort where they provide insurance with one tax id before the procedure, so everything looks like it will go well, and provide the insurance with a different tax id after the procedure, so their patients do not get refunded afterwards. They have 3 different tax ids, one that was out of network for us and two that are in network. They refused to change the tax id to one that was in network and tried to blame us for being ignorant of their practices and claimed there was nothing they could do. We would not have used them if we had gotten correct information, that we would be out so much money for our decision to use them. They were not truthful with us about their billing practices. read more

When you have labs and testing done, there's no explanation and no protocols are individualized for you as a human being and an individual. You're just a number to them. I gave SGF a chance despite the overwhelming amount of negative reviews - but now I empathize with the other disappointed customers. This facility is just a machine. Do not expect anyone to remember your name - you are just a member in the herd of cattle coming in each day. Be prepared to advocate for yourself - ask your own questions (because things are not explained to you) and follow up (because they don't, even if they promise). I went in for an IVF consult, as well as completed my initial ultrasound and baseline lab work. The staff was rude and unfriendly. The process felt so impersonal and rushed. During my ultrasound, I had to ask what I was looking at, and what was to be expected/normal. Leaving the office, I was told my lab results would be reported to me and uploaded into the patient portal same day. THREE MONTHS LATER - nothing is in my chart! No one called to discuss my results. When I followed up, and my labs were finally uploaded, zero explanation was given about the values. When I asked for someone to call and explain what I was looking at - because I didn't understand - I was told someone would next day to talk about my results. The next day came and went. No one called. The communication at this facility is so inconsistent, which is appalling given how personal this process is. I have since started care with an alternate fertility center - and it is NIGHT AND DAY. The staff at this other facility is very communicative, follows through and comes off like they care. They take the time to explain things to you, to answer your questions and actually get to know you as a human being. I will discourage anyone who asks from going to SGF. I didn't actually get as far as actually doing fertility treatments, because at my initial consultation and fertility testing I got so turned off. So I can't speak to their skills at actually getting women pregnant. Shady Grove's profit model mostly seems to be to scam customers. They kept telling me I needed to undergo unnecessary consultations with outside providers, and when I said I would see my own doctors, they insisted I had to see one of their providers from a list -- none of whom took insurance. I assume they are getting kickbacks for these referrals. I fell for it twice but when they decided I needed to see a high-risk pregnancy expert because their unnecessary consultations had taken so long I had a birthday and they now deemed me high risk due to age, I decided to go elsewhere. I'm much happier with Dominion Fertility so far. read more

I am so thankful that Shady Grove turned me away as a patient because it led me to finding an amazing doctor. I will start by saying that when I lived in NJ, I went to a fertility clinic in order to get treatment from a reproductive endocrinologist for PCOS. So there *are* fertility clinics that provide medical treatment out there. So when I moved to DC and had strong suspicion that I had also developed endometriosis, I began calling around to all the reproductive endocrinologists in the area. I was delighted to find that, according to my insurance network, Dr. Swelstad specializes in PCOS AND endometriosis. I submitted a contact form via the website and received a call the next morning to schedule an appointment (which, in all fairness, is good business practice, so that's what the 1 star will be attributed to). The woman recommended the office closer to my apartment and I declined, saying I'm okay going further so I could meet with this particular doctor. She explained once treatments begin, I will have to stay with my initial office. I responded that I wasn't inquiring on fertility treatment, but treatment for PCOS and a possible endometriosis diagnosis. She declined to take me on as a patient stating that they're a fertility clinic, so if I'm not actively trying to get pregnant, they won't take me on as a patient. I responded saying "but I need a reproductive endocrinologist, and that's what your doctors are" and she responded again that it's only for fertility. Here's the issue: treating PCOS and endometriosis would impact and improve my fertility. While I'm not in a position to get pregnant RIGHT NOW doesn't mean that providing me MEDICAL treatment for fertility-related illnesses wouldn't eventually lead to pregnancy. What she was politely saying without actually saying it is because I'm not interested in IVF or IUI at this time, the practice will not make enough money off of me and therefore they do not take on patients who simply want fertility-adjacent medical treatment. Does it not occur to the practice that treating PCOS and endometriosis is a direct impact to my fertility and therefore you are still doing your work as a fertility clinic? I don't deserve medical treatment because it's not baby time for me yet? Do you understand how frustrating and backwards that is? Treating PCOS and endometriosis *IS* treating fertility. Do you realize how many women would have an easier time getting pregnant if they receive medical care before it gets to the point that fertility treatments are needed? I don't have to go into the emotional, mental, and financial HAVOC that fertility issues cause couples, or even single hopefuls. So it's a shame that that's the main focus. Thankfully I found Dr. Delgado at the Chronic Pelvic Pain Center of Northern Virginia. Her staff has been absolutely wonderful and my suspicions of endometriosis were confirmed, as well as other diagnoses and I was provided many options that *I* get to choose for how I treat the endo and the associated pain. So thank you, Shady Grove, for turning me away. Now if only I can figure out how to get Spotify to stop playing your ads while I'm listening. I had decided weeks ago not to post a review, but every time the damn ad comes on I'm incensed all over again. TL/DR: This is not a doctor's office, this is a business. I could NOT recommend this place less. A litany of tests (many clearly just to cover their liability concerns and in NO way necessary in our case), a required visit with a social services therapist (from their list, none taking insurance, $250 for an hour-long chat of no particular informative value), and a nurse incapable of keeping track of the million little requirements we had to complete, despite our repeated questions--all this adds up to a spectacularly stressful experience. I think the staff assumes you just know about all the steps involved by osmosis. Example one: We arrive for our first IUI and have to delay it by a month because the nurse tells us AT THE CLINIC that a crucial requirement is missing. Could this not have been brought up WEEKS before as I was sending in my many test results? Or, at worst, a week before when I was scheduling the IUI appointment? Instead, WE get a lecture that this was "on the list" we received months ago, at the overview session, when we got a stack of documents and papers. We are detail-oriented, capable professionals--there was too much to keep track of, we are not physicians, and we are vulnerable and overwhelmed by this process. Isn't it the nurse's responsibility to help us keep track of the requirements, especially when I specifically ask, "please tell me, do you have everything we need?" (to say nothing of the fact at least half of the tests and requirements had nothing to do with my fertility or health status). Example 2: It is now a week before my ovulation. We have completed "the last thing" that was necessary, and I get a call that they do not have 3 of my tests (thankfully, this was just a matter of me calling the insurance and asking them to re-fax the results), 4 tests from my partner (tests that make absolutely no sense in our circumstances), and 3 consent forms. The consent forms turn out to be A HEAP of papers that, if signed outside of their office, require a notary public. So--this means ANOTHER trip to the clinic? Why could this not have been done when we were at the clinic a month ago? Why was it not even mentioned? Or why can't this be done on the same day of the insemination? If you are at the beginning of your fertility journey, facing an IUI, this is NOT a helpful place. You will be treated with a cookie-cutter precision of a very large factory, you will have to keep track of absolutely everything yourself (not an easy task, it turns out, with the many abbreviations for tests and procedures), and you will not be treated as an individual--you will receive phrases and answers that are prepackaged and will be forced to undergo tests and screenings that have little relevance to your actual situation and your actual needs. With my first IUI a week away (if we are lucky, that is), I am horribly stressed--and these people are supposed to be HELPING US have a baby. Terrible. read more

This is the worst experience I've ever had with a medical facility. Every step of my experience with them has been a time and money suck and TERRIBLE patient care. My first appt was virtual and Dr Devine recommended, without any testing and only based on verbal discussion, that I stop taking my thyroid medicine. This could have caused my 2nd miscarriage had I not been vigilant and proactive. When I tried to engage with their office, they 'forgot' about me and sent no follow up for 2 weeks, when I finally called them after sending several portal messages. Upon receiving a bill including an encounter with a doctor I never seen, it took 39 days, 3 portal messages, 8 phone calls and 5 voicemails for them to respond. It was a front desk person who could not answer my question and again referred me to their billing department's voicemail. They are not responsive, their portal is not user-friendly and the only constant engagement I received from them is their marketing and advertising emails. Terrible company. read more

I'm so shocked about the negative reviews! I had the most amazing experience at Shady Grove - both the K Street and Rockville locations. Dr. Widra was so kind and thorough - he explained each step of the process and was always optimistic. His nurses were also amazing, especially Robin. They were always quick to call me with results and answered the 1000 questions I had throughout the process. The nurses at the K street clinic were always nice and efficient. They want to take deposits for services that is not incurred or future services , and if due for future service ..they want to stop the treatment for service that is already covered by insurance plan. They care for money than service. Clinical team is good and responsive. They don't guide patients with financial costs that might be incurred for treatment plans. I am grateful for our daughter that was conceived by using Shady Grove, however, we had a lot of billing issues along the way that was super stressful and due to wrong medical coding, long wait times at the offices and now we find out there is a, "no children allowed" policy in the office? It seems odd that a place dedicated to building families doesn't allow families in their office. read more

Do not go to this clinic. Front office staff, their supervisor, and doctor (Dr. Kathleen Divine) are all extremely unprofessional and unpleasant at DC K street. 1) their payment system is messed up - they couldn't even track patients' payment, 2) nevertheless they believe they are 100% correct that I did not make payments even if I said it was paid, 3) the doctor only cares the appointment time over which she could charge. She does not try to understand the route of the cause, nor listen to the patient's concern. I took a baseline exam for egg freezing in April 2019. They provided a quote via email - $325 incl. blood test, ultrasound plus consultation to discuss the result. I paid $20 co-pay on site and $75 for lab, and insurance paid the rest. I did not have a chance to come back for a consultation until Mar 2020. I then called this practice in March as I wanted to know financial cost of egg freezing. They said that I first need to make an appointment with a doctor to come up with a treatment plan and booked the date for the appointment. I went to the clinic on the appointment date, and asked to confirm that this consultation is free of charge as I already made payment when baseline exam was done last year. The front office staff took 20 mins to call their finance team and said they can only see $20 as my payment record, and in that case I have to pay for the consultation. Dr. Kathleen came and asked me if I still want to see her or reschedule it as she only has limited time. I told her that I need to confirm that I do not have to pay for the consultation and that there is an issue of the clinic's system as it doesn't record my payment properly. She said we could meet now regardless and they will send the bill to my insurance company. I then asked how much my out-of-pocket will be. She and her staff said I should check with insurance company. Throughout the very short conversation I had with Dr. Divine, I realized that she didn't bother spend time to listen to me nor willing to guide the staff to come up with a solution. She sounded arrogant and doesn't care how much patients would suffer from these unclear medical bills. Then supervisor, a white woman, came and asked me to show the proof that I made payments. I said I didn't bring the record because I had never expected that the clinic doesn't keep the record. She didn't check with the finance team, was incapable of coming up with a solution. She said that our conversation is not productive and told me to leave. The whole interaction was very unpleasant, they kept saying that I did not make payments without having any doubt that their system was screwed. After I came back and checked the record, I confirmed that my insurance company did pay out to the practice right after my previous visit. The people at this clinic are not trustworthy, never admit their mistake, very arrogant. Do not go there if you want to consult with somebody who cares you. read more

I feel like a number and my questions are not being addressed properly. I am not infertile, I am LGBTQ and I wish they didn't treat me as infertile as these are 2 different paths, however, I feel like they are just going down their path as they normally would. I have a shellfish/iodine allergy and they have insisted that I do the HSG with iodine, even though there is an alternative. I have addressed this several times leading up to my appointment days in advance, and finally, a different nurse said she would bring this up to my Dr., less than 24 hours before my HSG. I still have no word back and my appointment is 18 hours from now. I started this process with Boston IVF and we had to move to Maryland and switch to SGF. We had a son with Boston IVF this summer (my partner carried) and in my opinion, their treatment of LGBTQ is a world of difference in a positive way. Their forms were updated and they didn't make us attend education modules that talk mostly about infertility and speak about male/female partners. Boston IVF did not make it mandatory for counseling either, it was an option. With SFG because we are using donor sperm it is mandatory and $260 out of pocket cost. Although it was somewhat helpful, we already have a son and have selected our donor, most of the conversation was geared towards that and what we would tell our son/future child in 10 years' time. I do not think it should be mandatory, rather a suggestion. Also, if this counselor thinks I will remember when our child is 10 and what she told us she's in for a surprise. I have no idea what I even wore yesterday, nevermind what a counselor told me 10 years prior. Lastly, during COVID-19 I understand it's difficult to do many things, especially in their profession. Our Dr and nurses are all nice, but it feels very rushed on the phone. Short answers back and no explanations. It is a difficult process to have 1 30-minute consult via Zoom and then everything else over the phone or via message in their portal. Terrible service for the amount of money they are charging you! They have conducted tests which were not correct and should have not been done during my period causing me pain and charging my insurance company! Never get a call back during their business hours it's always 5 mins before they close and so I can't ever reach them! There is no contact with my doctor and all emails are only to a nurse. I only see technicians who don't even know what I'm being tested for! There is no support for injections for IVF cycle it's a lot of money collected for the cycle with very little service provided. read more

We had an excellent experience with SGF. Professional, prompt, and always felt well cared for. Dr. Nair was recommended by my OB and we loved her! She's personable, thoughtful, and listens well. Would recommend SGF to my closest friends and family. read more

SG really needs to work the following: 1) when it comes to medical outcomes, the next steps/recommendations should be communicated with a sense of urgency from the Dr. not farmed out to the nurse coordinator who lacks expertise. 2) The patient should not have to proactively research their options when it is the job of Dr. Widra to walk through the options & associated risks from the onset face to face when you have his attention. Dr. Widra does not need to wait for bloodwork to at least initiate this conversation, and it's not an excuse. 3) The online portal is prehistoric and not user friendly - I am not the only one who feels this way. When you reply to a message, you CANT SEE THE MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE BELOW YOUR RESPONSE (?!) 4) Break the cycle of making patients wait on average 20-30 min before each visit. This is 100% a front office issue that can be fixed. The last 4 visits, I waited 20-25 minutes to see the Dr. and they NEVER apologize. 5) Overall communication, explanation of what's happening to you, and bedside manners is poor. Unacceptable for the $$ and time couples are investing. I do genuinely believe the doctors care, but the message is that they are too busy. This is a business at the end of the day looking to turn a profit, the customer should always come first. If I had to do it all over again I would not come here. read more

My husband met with Dr. Shin before he moved to Shady Grove. He was very friendly and informative. Once he moved to Shady Grove we had a follow up appointment where he gave my husband a referral to another doctor for a varicocele embolization. However when we called that doctor he was no longer accepting new patients. We tried for several months to call Shady Grove merely to get a referral for another doctor. We never received phone calls back after leaving message after message. We even tried setting up another appointment. When we did finally get a call back, they left a message. We attempted to call back with no luck. We finally gave up and are going to Johns Hopkins. read more

I'm only leaving a review here because I feel I have no one at Shady Grove who is assisting me. I received a letter from my insurance last night denying us financial assistance with our ivf journey, only this was a surprise to us as we had not started the process. We completed our tests in February and my husband was considering options. I was heart broken reading the letter first because they denied something I hadn't asked for yet, the request was done incorrectly and no one asked for our consent. In speaking to the assisting nurse, ( I won't mention her name) I tried to explain that this is an emotional and sensitive situation because my husband thinks that I may have gone ahead and made decisions without his consent.The nurse was completely inconsiderate to my feelings except when I used the F word and not at her ( as I explained to her) she scolded me and told me she was a professional and she would hang up. So they crush ur dreams, cause issues in ur relationships by acting on ur behalf when u don't ask them to,but don't u dare express frustration because we won't tolerate that! As I cried on the call asking to speak to my assigned doctor she sounded as though she was talking to someone at a service window who was nagging her. She made me feel so small. Mental health is an issue in this country especially now and having somebody who is meant to help you through this difficult process treat you like nothing, really hurts. I'm extremely saddened by Shady Grove. Treat people better! You don't know what people are going through in their daily lives!!! read more

This review is for the SGFC fertility preservation (egg freezing) services, not IVF. I'm sad to say that my experience mirrored those undergoing IVF. The only reason I am giving two stars is because I had a good result, despite the intense emotional journey to get there. First, the first and only time I met with my doctor was during my initial counsultation. She outlined the process, answered my (few) questions. I did not see her again during the 4-month process. Not once. She did call a couple times, but for the most part I communicated with the nurse. She did not perform my retreival. The K street location is not open on the weekends and, what was not explained to me until the MIDDLE of the process, was that at certain times, I would have to undergo monitoring over the weekends, which meant travel to Annapolis or Rockville. I have a car; but if you're one of the MANY DC women who are car-less city-dwellers, factor in (1) expense for rental cars; (2) a two-hour drive (sometimes twice in one weekend). The "factory" description is apt: Each appointment I was shuttled in with little acknowledgement, and hurried out as quickly as possible. If I had questions, I was told to e-mail my nurse. All this leaves little room for variances, which often happens during the fertility process. I twice had to get ahold of someone afterhours and this was an incredible effort - it took more than 3 hours to get someone to call me back. Finally, I had a huge snafu with timing my retrieval. I understand that timing retrieval can be tricky: How one's body reacts to the hormones is not an exact science. But when I asked my nurse reviewing my ultrasounds whether I would be able to travel (for business) 3 days after my retrieval date, she e-mailed yes. Not, "let me check and get back to you." Not, "well, you know we have this window, and I wouldn't recommend scheduling anything because sometimes it can be pushed." Not a word that I would trigger later than the 3-day window. Flights were booked, meetings arranged with potential clients. At my monitoring appointment the next day, I'm told by the nurse performing my ultrasound that it could take as long as a week for me to trigger and the eggs retrieved. I then asked to speak to the attending physician who refused to give me anything approaching a timeline. "If it were me, I'd cancel the meetings," he said while spinning in his chair (not hyperbole). I asked that he have my physician call me that evening to discuss. I then had a complete meltdown and walked out of the office. My doctor did call me that evening, but only to lecture me on being rude to the attending doctor (in Rockville). She gave me no further information on my retreival date. I didn't get that until a couple days later (and the date provided was 10 days after the original retreival date). What SGFC fails to grasp is that the women undergoing fertility preservation are doing it alone and do not have the support system that might cushion these unexpected changes. And if I have the means to undergo this procedure, I'm likely a working professional that cannot absorb scheduling changes willy-nilly. I would gladly have paid additional money for a little guidance and more humanity in the process (fortunately, I did get that through the nurses I hired through Grubb's pharmacy). Do not go through this thinking that anyone at SGFC will hold your hand. read more

I debated leaving a review but I wanted to share my experience so that other women/couples of color are informed and aware. I am a single woman who underwent IVF with an anonymous donor. I now have two beautiful, amazing children btw! However, as a black woman, the therapist Shady Grove Fertility referred me to (Dr. Laura Covington) absolutely could not relate to me, my experiences and my decision to become a single mother by choice. She was actually insulting in her questioning of my choice of a donor and her response to me and my past relationships, including my engagement to a white man, reflected her biases and prejudices. I am obviously writing this review after many, many months, but I am doing so because of just how bad that experience was for me, hence why I debated sharing my experience after so many months. To be honest, Dr. Laura Covington isn't the greater problem. The problem is that Shady Grove fertility makes everyone see a therapist before undergoing treatment but NONE of the approved practitioners are people of color, so there are absolutely no options for a woman or a couple of color to seek counseling from a professional who may be in the position to better relate to them. So while I don't have a critique of SGF specifically, I do believe they need to make a serious effort to hire therapists of color since their patients are comprised of many women and couples of color. read more

I'm not one to write a review under most circumstances. My expectations are normally minimal of most places...doctors, restaurants, anything...therefore bad experiences don't provoke me to write a review so that I can be heard. This review is for all of the women, beginning the tough, unfortunate, and confusing journey of infertility, and are considering Shady Grove for evaluation and treatment. My journey began 3 years ago with Shady Grove. During this time, I've spoken to my doctor only 3 times. Most of my conversations were with nurses and technicians who were annoyed with me everytime I had a question or required a little more clarity. Each time I spoke with someone, I had to remind them of how long I had been receiving treatment and what my status was. I would often have to ask them to read my chart, as the advice they were giving was for medications and treatments that I hadn't even received. The monitoring is extensive and seems more for letigation protection than to assist you in having a baby. Shady Grove is by far, the worst medical care that I've ever received. Their cookie cutter process was not for me, and unfortunately, it took 3 years along with emotional and financial drainage for me to realize it. This time in a womans life is too difficult as it is to attend a clinic that treats you with no specific care or warmth. Every womens issues are not the same and it seems that Shady Grove applies their factory-like process to everyone that comes in the door. All of the previous negative reviews are accurate. I'm sure that their success rate comes from luck as there are no expertise being conveyed in any interaction. I strongly advise for anyone with fertility issues to seek help at any practice other than Shady Grove. I've recently made an appointment with a new practice and my experience is already significantly more positive. Best of luck to you on your journey. read more

We decided to give SGF a shot despite hearing some negative reviews from friends. I had a fairly positive impression at first - our doctor (Dr. Nair at the K St. facility) seemed caring and invested and they really seemed to know what they were doing. Things started to go wrong when I began my routine testing. The Physician's Assistant who did my HSG test (at the Rockville location) was extremely rude. The test was very painful for me, but she kept snapping at me that "it shouldn't hurt." Finally, as I was in tears because of the pain, she asked if I wanted her to stop the test or keep going. As I was literally taking a breath before answering her, she shouted, "I need an answer NOW!" Thank the heavens the results on that test were normal, because they share them with you right there and I would not have wanted to receive bad news from her. Everything was essentially downhill from there. During my day 3 ultrasound, the technician suddenly got very quiet and solemn when she got to my left ovary. I was concerned, but the next day our nurse called and said everything looked great. I was happy to hear it looked like I had just been imagining things. However, at my follow-up appointment several weeks later, I asked our doctor to just confirm everything was normal with the left ovary because the ultrasound tech had seemed a little concerned. Turns out I had a complex 4cm ovarian cyst and they weren't even going to mention it because it was "probably nothing." Okay...I understand not wanting to make something out of nothing, but complex cysts are the more serious type and do not tend to go away on their own. Why not just tell me it was there and THEN say it was probably nothing to worry about? When I expressed concern, I was told rather condescendingly that I could have the cyst rechecked in two months "if it would make me feel better." I did, and it had not gone away. An MRI and an OB/GYN visit later, I found out I had a dermoid cyst, and the OB/GYN said it was a "no-brainer" that it should be removed. I also found out around 1-2% of these cysts turn out to be malignant. I realize that is a tiny percentage, but what if I had been one of those women? I would have lost months of valuable treatment time, all because SGF was not even going to mention the existence of the cyst. I have had it taken care of and am ready to resume fertility treatment, but we won't be returning to SGF. It just made me wonder what else they don't feel the need to tell you. I'm sure they have provided great service to lots of people, but I don't trust them with my health care after this experience. read more
