My experience with SEA was very mixed. I will start by saying that Dr. Telega is extremely knowledgeable and seemed like she was genuinely concerned about my eye wellness. She talked me through some things that could help with wearing my contacts too long, etc. Also, while the glasses I chose were super expensive, I also really love them. It was a frame I had found nowhere else! As for the front office staff, definitely very friendly but very disorganized. When I was first contacted by Krista she had to get my husband's social and I gave that over the phone. Then she asked me again when it came appointment time; turns out she did not write it in the system. Thankfully I had it in a note on my phone. Not something you keep on hand! Secondly, I was charged for glasses before even being fitted for them. Lastly, it had been 2.5 weeks since I had my appointment and did not get a call that my glasses were ready. Sure enough I called the office and they had them....just didn't notify me. Returning here is up in the air for me. While I had a good experience with the doctor, paying as much as I did for glasses and not having an entirely good experience left sort of a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Finding Dr. Telega is probably one of the best things to have happened to me in 2020- no exaggeration! She is incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and generous with her time. She always listens carefully and explains her process in detail, weighing pros and cons of each treatment option. I take time out of my work schedule to come to my appointment only to find out they are out of network. ATTENTION!!!! This may be the best optometrist that I have visited, after trying a multitude in the past. With a background as a nurse practitioner, I seek out the best in every field. Dr. Telega is the best. I had multiple friends and patients recommend Dr. Telega, and ensured that I would not be disappointed. When I arrived, I was greeted with a warm smile by Janine, who set up the scenario for a great experience. The office was extremely clean and modern; and there was an array of glasses to choose from that anyone would walk out happy with. Above all, I was so very happy and impressed with Dr. Telega's skills, knowledge, and comprehensive exam. Being in the healthcare field, and seeing patients every day, I know how important it is to treat every patient with the respect they deserve. Dr. Telega went above that, and treated me like family. Due to a medication I am on, she made sure to perform a thorough exam particular to ocular side effects it could cause. She went through my entire family history, making sure she did not overlook diagnoses of macular degeneration, glaucoma, etc. I probably consumed too much of Dr. Telega's time, but she was so easy to talk to and never made me feel rushed! Choosing glasses afterwards was a breeze. Due to the fact that I am not a fan of contacts, I was given the best options in eyewear. After doing some research on finding a new optometrist, I decided to go to Shadyside Eye Associates. Upon stepping into the store I felt like I immediately made a wonderful choice. It's a small and stylish boutique and that's when I first met Janine. I felt terrible as I interrupted her lunch! I told her to take her time as i was in no rush. She took my insurance information and I signed some forms to get the process rolling. She explained to me what I could do with my insurance as I was getting my eyes checked for both contacts and new glasses. Then I was taken back for my exam and Dr. Telega let me know what she was doing every step of the way. It was really refreshing to be in on everything that was happening and the why of everything. Sometimes it's just really nice to not be treated as an idiot. I explained how allergies have bothered my eyes in the past, especially when wearing contacts. She looked at my eyes and explained what was happening and how to prevent it going into the spring allergy season. I'm so thankful for this because I feel like I'm going to avoid a huge hassle. When I was done with my exam I went back out to Janine who is a GODDESS at picking out frames. She asked what I liked and if I wanted to stick to something similar or try something new. I ended up picking out frames that I would never have tried on if she hadn't picked them out for me. The level of care Dr. Telega provides is unsatisfactory and her lack of skill in building a patient relationship is disappointing. My experience has been that her approach to patients is rushed. On more than one occasion I have felt dismissed and ignored as a patient as she has not taken the necessary time to listen to my vision care concerns nor to properly address those concerns. I came to Dr. Telega as she claims to specialize in and enjoy challenges such as dry eyes, unique contact lens fits, etc. and my experience has been that this is not true. When faced with challenges, she has not performed well. The office manager is at times rude and does not create a welcoming environment for patients. read more

I'm only in Pittsburgh for a year so I was just looking for anyone to take me ASAP for new glasses and contact lenses prescriptions before moving, and this place was the most convenient for me. The staff exceeded my expectations. Dr. Telega was very transparent and gave me realistic expectations of how much improvement I'd see in my dry eyes with daily contacts (I used to wear the 2-week ones) - instead of pushing me to get the most expensive dailies available, she was very honest and suggested one that fit my budget. I'm loving the ones she recommended so far. Bonus - I ordered contacts through their office and they arrived 2 days later - earlier than expected! Dr Telega is one of the best doctors I have ever visited. I have had extremely dry eyes after my LASIK surgery that I had over 7 years ago. I have visited several eye doctors since my surgery but none of them have had the knowledge or expertise that Dr Telega did regarding dry eyes and latest treatments. Dr Telega took the time to really listen to my concerns and suggest new treatment options. I never once felt rushed or anything but her main priority during my visit. I could not be happier to finally have relief and be able to enjoy the benefits of having had LASIK surgery! This review comes three months after my last appointment with them, but I want everyone to understand how awesome Dr. Telega and Janine are. When I first came to Dr. Telega, I had all but given up on having even adequate vision ever again. I was diagnosed with severe keratoconus in my right eye, and because of all the reading I had to do in law school my condition was deteriorating fast. It had gotten so bad that I couldn't even drive at night, and that was with my glasses on. My last eye doctor recommended that I go get contact lenses because there was nothing more that glasses could do for me. I've worn glasses all my life, and to be told at the age of 24 that my eyes were so bad that I couldn't even rely on them any more was frightening. So I found an office in my area that had the equipment necessary to fit keratoconic eyes with contact lenses, My experience was less than stellar. It took over five months and just as many fittings to get my lenses, and even then the contacts I was fitted with ended up doing more harm then good. They were tiny gas permeable lenses that would slip and slide across my cornea whenever I blinked. Any time I had them in strangers would stop me to ask if I was having an allergic reaction to something, my eyes were SO red. Even though I didn't like the result, I don't want to bad mouth them here and place the blame solely at their doorstep. My case is pretty bad and it was clear that they just didn't have the ability to deal with it. At that point I had almost given up altogether. I never wore the lenses and was forced to stick with my glasses even though it was becoming harder and harder to see out of them. On a whim I decided to give contact lenses another try, and chose to have it done at Shadyside Eye Associates because they were close to my house and took my insurance. I will tell the truth and say that I didn't expect much walking in. My past experience had jaded me and I was only trying again just to confirm to myself that I would have to get used to the idea that one day soon I will only see out of one eye. Despite my misgivings, the moment I stepped into their office my past experiences were quickly set aside. Janine was so nice and gracious. She asked me questions about my day and walked me through the initial client survey. I then met with Dr. Telega and was surprised at how optimistic she was even after she saw how bad my vision was. She was incredibly frank, which I appreciated, and willingly admitted that she had never encountered Keratoconus of my severity, but told me that if I was willing to trust her, she would do everything she could to fit me with lenses that actually worked. After leaving their office on that first visit, I felt okay with the my belief that even if they couldn't fit me with lenses, they at least would have made every effort possible before coming to that conclusion. When I came back to the office for my second visit, Dr. Telega looked really excited to meet with me. When we sat down in the exam room she explained that she had been thinking about my case since I last met with her, and had decided to attend a symposium on new advances in contact lenses for Keratoconus patients. There she learned about Scleral lenses, which are large bowl shaped lenses that vault over the patient's eye and bathe the cornea in tears instead of sitting on the eye like RPG's. She said that when she saw it she instantly thought of me and knew that it was perfect for my condition. She said that she had never fitted lenses like that before, but if I was willing to try, she would like to use me as a test case. I was honestly shocked, and by the lenses, but by the fact that she had even thought of me in the first place. Most eye doctors I've been too have tons of patients, so I always understand when they seem a bit distant when ever I visit. But for her to have thought about my problem even when I wasn't scheduled to see her really bowled me over. So we greed that I would be her willing guinea pig of sorts in working out this new technology. The fitting lasted all of one hour, and only happened once. JUST ONCE. And it was completely painless. She just popped the test lenses in, checked the fit, took them out, and we moved on to the next one. We had my fit down pat in one session. I was so happy. The lenses we eventually settled on WORK PERFECTLY. The fit is snug and even though they look huge outside the case they are so comfortable. After the first few minutes your don't even feel them. This office gave me the best experience I have ever had with an eye doctor, and I am eternally grateful to Dr. Telega and Janine for what they've done for me. If you need an eye doctor.PLEASE CONSIDER SHADYSIDE EYE ASSOCIATES, they will do everything they can to help you and then some. read more

Dr. Telega has gone above and beyond every doctor I've ever been to. She cares immensely for her patients' well-being. I saw 3-4 eye doctors prior to her that could not treat my eye irritation issues and barely offered any help. She has worked with me for a couple of months and always stays in contact. Janine is just about the nicest person you'll ever meet; she helped me pick out a pair of glasses that suit my facial structure--you can tell she knows what she's doing. Dr. Telega is super friendly and thorough. I only went in for a quick prescription update, so I can't vouch for anything more than that, but she seems completely trustworthy. I had such wonderful customer service at this office. I moved into Shadyside about 6 months ago and discovered this place was within walking distance of my new apartment. I had an appointment within a few days of calling and got great service at the appointment. It is a small office so they are very personable. It is also BRAND NEW and so clean and modern. It was me and another patient and the optician, Janine, and Dr. Telega were so courteous and friendly. They took my coat and offered me a coffee or water while I waited. They use computers and tablets for everything which is always a plus. I purchased a new pair of glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses from them. They have lots of designer frames too. I am very pleased and very happy to have found this new doctor so close to home and have such a positive experience. I would definitely reccomend them to anyone in the area. read more

I went here to get new computer glasses. I received the prescription and had it filled at another store. When the glasses came in there was something very wrong. The staff checked the lenses and said the prescription I'd received was for reading glasses -- thus were designed for close up. I called Dr. Telega's office to get a new prescription and the glasses were remade. When I retrieved the glasses the second time, there was still something very wrong. We looked at the prescription, and it was 2x stronger than the one for my current glasses, which seemed strange. So I got a new vision exam from a different eye doctor (at my own expense since my insurance had already paid for the annual exam). The new doctor said my vision was nearly unchanged from before and the prescription I'd received from Dr. Telega was wrong. I had the glasses made a third time, using the new prescription, and they were fine. I went to see Dr. Telega because her reviews were so fantastic, but in my case she was unable to provide a correct vision assessment. read more

I've been going to Dr. Telega for my yearly checkup since she opened Shadyside Eye Associates 2.5 years ago. Last weekend I was outside for most of the day and somehow got a piece of dirt or grit in my eye. This had never happened to me before so I didn't know what to do. I called Dr. Telega and got ahold of her after hours, on a Sunday morning. She told me what to do to make myself more comfortable until I could get in to see her on Monday morning, and even said that if it got too bad I could text her and she'd open up the office on Sunday night to treat me. On Monday my eye was so irritated and swollen that she couldn't remove the dirt, so she gave me steroid/anti-inflammatory drops and had me back in on Tuesday afternoon to continue my treatment. I am very skittish about people touching my eyes and she was SO helpful and patient and gentle, talking me through everything she was doing and giving me plenty of time to take deep breaths in between pokes and prods. By Friday my eye was still swollen and even though the office isn't open on Friday she trekked over to Shadyside to meet me and clean out my eye again. The entire time she was so helpful and patient and never made me feel like a crazy person for wincing every time she touched my eye. I truly felt like she really cared about my eye health and was willing to do whatever it took to get me treated in the best way possible. I cannot recommend Dr. Telega enough! read more
